Chapter 7

Kate made up her mind, choosing not to wait for him to wake up. She took his shoes off, pulled down his pants, and took them off him. Then she woke Rick and helped him into the bedroom and onto the bed. He was asleep in minutes. Her questions were going to have to wait.

She went to the kitchen and finished lunch. Then she checked, finding Rick still asleep.

Kate decided to strip down and lay next to him for support. She hadn't had sex for two weeks, and she was anxious. She was hot. Let's face it – Kate was horny. But, since the man she cared so much about was hurt, sex would have to wait.

She stroked his face and ran her hand across his chest. But all that did was make her even more horny, so she stopped. Eventually, she fell asleep next to him.

Kate woke up. He was still asleep, so she got up quietly and showered. She got dressed, kissed him, and headed for the kitchen to make breakfast. It was just two scrambled eggs, coffee, and some toast, but it was enough.

She had almost finished eating when suddenly Rick limped into the kitchen. "You shouldn't be on that leg." She got up and helped him sit down. "Would you like breakfast? I still have some hot coffee and can make more scrambled eggs and toast."

"Yes, thank you." Rick watched her work until he had a full plate in front of him, a fork, and a steaming cup of coffee.

"Tell me what happened, Rick."

"I can't."

Kate blew up. "The hell you can't! I'm your girlfriend, and I have a right to know! And don't give me any of that security bullshit. I just pulled a bullet from your leg and want to know what happened." By then, Kate was breathing heavily. "Don't tell me where or why you were there, but tell me what happened," Kate begged.

Rick sighed. "I was at the site, which I can't tell you about, making my way through it on the way to where I wanted to go. So far, I hadn't had to shoot anyone. That all changed when a pair of guards came around the corner and caught me in the files I was searching.

"That was when a firefight ensued. I got one, but the other got me in the leg. I shot and killed the man. I was using a silencer, but they weren't, and the sound alerted others. I ran for it, bleeding all the way.

"I jumped in my borrowed car and took off toward the dirt airport where the jet was. I left the car and flew to the Philippines, where I stopped for fuel, then continued to Tokyo, where I stopped for fuel, and made it home. The real challenge was getting home from the airport."

"You need a different job, Babe." Kate was glad that he had told her something.

"A desk job? That would mean a move, and we only just got here."

Kate made a face at that thought. She liked it here. The weather was perfect. When it rained, it didn't rain for long though it rained hard when it did.

"I can't afford to change jobs. Hopefully, I won't get shot again, but I can't rule it out."

That wasn't what she wanted to hear. "At least you aren't going anywhere anytime soon."

"No, not like this, I won't," he agreed. "So why do you need to know so badly?" Rick asked her point-blank.

"BECAUSE I LOVE YOU, YOU STUPID MAN!" Kate yelled. Then far more softly, she said, "Because I love you." She was ready to start crying. Rick put his arms around her, and she broke down crying. She knew she needed to tell him but not like this.

Rick held her for a while. "Feeling better now?" She nodded. "Good, because I love you too."

It took her a moment for what he said to sink in. Then she looked up at him. "You love me?"

Rick told her a little about why he loved her. "Of course I love you. You care about me. You're funny, kind of stubborn from time to time, and I make love to you, Kate. I don't make love to a WHORE."

Kate buried her face against his chest. She loved him, and he loved her. Kate was happy. She sniffed and wiped her nose. "You love me," she repeated softly to herself. That meant the world to her. "And I'm your girlfriend."

"That you are. Come on, sit with me for a bit." Rick hobbled out of the kitchen and over to the sectional that looked out onto the ocean.

They sat wrapped in each other's arms. They said nothing but reveled in knowing that they loved each other. "Want to watch TV or a movie?" Rick asked, but Kate shook her head no. She wanted to stay just like this.

~oo0oo~

Rick was sitting at the computer. He had to tell the Agency that he was out of business for a while because of his gunshot wound when in walked Kate to check on him. She didn't want him walking around on that leg.

Then the burner phone rang. Rick picked it up and answered on the third ring. "Hello." After clearing it with Shaw, he activated a part of the phone, allowing whoever was near the burner phone to hear what she had to say. It would stay that way until he turned it off.

"Shaw here. I was checking in and wanted to tell you that we have verified that the voices on the tape are those of Captain Montgomery and Senator Bracken. We're deciding what our next action will be."

"I left the listening device in Montgomery's office," Rick mentioned. "I can tell you how to access it. It has a pretty good range. Not Chicago but certainly the airport."

"I'll take it," Shaw told him. Rick told her how to access it. "Thanks, Castle. I don't know what we'll get from it, but it helps."

"Good luck, Shaw."

"Call me if you think of anything else." Shaw hung up on him.

"You got all that?" Rick asked Kate, who nodded. "Sounds like we have a while to wait still. You good with that?"

"Do I have a choice?" Kate replied. "I hope they rot in prison. Them and the detective who said it was a random act of gang violence."

"That reminds me." Rick picked up the burner phone and called Shaw. "Verify if one of the voices is John Raglan. He was the detective that said it was a random act of gang violence."

"Will do, thanks." Shaw hung up again.

"Good catch." Rick was glad that she thought of it. He turned his attention back to his computer just as he received a reply from the Agency. "I'm off for at least six weeks."

"Good." Kate kissed him. "And you stay off that leg, mister."

"Yes, dear." Rick turned off the computer, limped to the living room sectional, and sat down. "Sounds like you're cooking for both of us for a while."

"It's a good thing my mother taught me how to cook. If I remember any of it." Kate sat down next to him and snuggled in nice and close.

"So, what did you do while I was gone?" Rick inquired.

She had to think about it. "Um, I went to the Arizona Memorial, went back to Diamond Head again, and went to the North Shore, where I spent the day on the beach. I went to Makapuu Lighthouse Trail, then to the Byodo-In Temple. I went to Ala Moana Center and did some window shopping. After that, I went to the Aloha Stadium Swap Meet & Marketplace. I didn't buy anything, though I wanted to. Oh, I took surfing lessons." Kate shrugged. "That's about it."

"Sounds like you had fun. Wish I could say the same," Rick sighed.

"You got shot...again. That's more than enough." Kate settled down and snuggled with him. She had him back even if he was injured.

Kate was resting next to Rick when she could wait no longer. She had suffered through two weeks without sex, and she needed sex. So she reached down his pajama bottoms, thankful he was wearing them.

She took him in her hand and began to stroke him. "Are you trying to start something, woman?"

"Your leg is damaged, not the rest of you, and I like the rest of you," Kate said pertly.

Once she had him partially erect, she bent down and took him in her mouth, giving him a blow job. Now over the last five years, she had given a lot of blow jobs, but this was the first one she enjoyed.

When she got him hard, she lifted her Hawaiian dress and lowered herself onto him. She moaned at feeling him inside her. It had been two long weeks since she had done this, and she enjoyed it.

She was grinding herself on his cock while facing him and closed her eyes and reveled in the feeling.

Kate got Rick to climax just as she did. She decided she hadn't had enough of him and worked at keeping him hard inside her. She lifted her dress up over her head, exposing that not only was she not wearing any panties, neither was she wearing a bra.

She felt Rick place his hands on her breasts and began massaging and squeezing them. She liked that a whole lot. She began moving up and down on his cock faster and faster until they both climaxed.

She bent down and kissed him and kept kissing him. She sat on him as he softened inside her until he finally slipped out of her, but she didn't stop kissing him.

Kate sat there after putting her dress back on and snuggled with him. His pajama bottoms were back in place. Only then did it occur to her that they hadn't used a condom this time.

She decided she was all right with that. She was willing to take risks from time to time. If she ended up pregnant, so be it. Kate was happy right where she was.

~oo0oo~

Then it happened: they had a fight. It was inevitable. Kate had been hovering over Rick for three days. She asked him constantly how he was feeling; if there was anything she could do for him. She told him he should sit there while she served him breakfast, lunch, dinner, or a snack. Or whatever it was. Could she get him something to drink?

Rick finally blew up at her. "WILL YOU STOP HOVERING OVER ME? I. AM. FINE!"

"Well, excuse me for giving a damn!" Kate stomped off and headed for one of the spare bedrooms, where she flopped down on the bed. She refused to cry. No matter how much her heart ached, she wouldn't do it! Still, Kate sniffed. And using the back of her hand, she wiped her nose.

Rick felt bad about shouting at her, but he was fine.

~oo0oo~

It was hours later. Rick was sitting outside on the deck, looking at the view. Suddenly there were hands resting on his shoulders. It could only be Kate. "I'm sorry. I love you and care so much about you, Rick. I was only trying to help. I'll back off if that's what you want."

Rick leaned back so he could see her. "I'm sorry I blew up at you. But I really am fine, Kate. Maybe if you back off just a little?"

"I can do that. Can we stop fighting now? Please?" Kate asked. "I don't want to fight anymore."

"Kiss me." Rick watched as Kate leaned down to kiss him. It was an upside-down kiss, but it was still a kiss. "Sit with me?"

Kate pulled a chair up close and sat down. It was only a moment later when she found her hand in his. She smiled at him and looked out at the view. "This is nice."

"Yes, it is," Rick agreed.

Almost more than anything, what Kate wanted to do, was to ask what she could get him, but she clamped her mouth tight. She didn't want to start a fight.

"You know the best part about a fight?" Rick asked, and she just hummed a no. "The makeup sex."

That got her laughing. She leaned across to kiss Rick, and he met her halfway.

They both heard the burner phone ringing, and Kate leaped up to retrieve it, turning to hand it to him. Rick answered it on the fourth ring. "Hello."

"Just giving you an update. We determined that the other two voices were Detectives John Raglan and Gary McCallister. And yes, it was Raglan. He said it was a random act of gang violence that killed Kate's parents," Shaw told them.

Rick just shook his head. "Figures. Anything else?"

"Only that Raglan is dying of lymphoma. We're hoping he'll be willing to talk now."

"Clear the air, so to speak," Rick said.

"Something like that. I'll be in touch." With that, Shaw ended the call.

"You heard all that?" Rick asked Kate, who nodded. "Sounds like she's making progress."

"Hopefully, he'll talk," Kate said.

"Here's hoping. Put this back, please." Rick handed her the burner phone and Kate did just that. When she returned, she took Rick's hand in hers again, and together they just sat there silently, looking at the view.

It was three days later, and Kate had reached a decision. "I want you to teach me how to shoot a gun."

Her request caught Rick off guard. "Why?"

"I want to be your partner. You won't or can't tell me where you're going, but if I'm your partner, I'll know where you're going. That way they'll have to give me a security clearance. I'm pretty sure the first requirement to be your partner is learning how to shoot. So I want you to teach me." It made sense to Kate.

"My partner?" Rick questioned her.

"Yes. If I had gone with you, I could have watched your back. That way, you wouldn't have gotten shot," Kate reasoned.

"So you want me to teach you how to shoot?" Rick had trouble wrapping his brain around this since it came out of nowhere for him.

She nodded. "Yes, I understand there is a difference between a paper target and a person, that I might have to shoot a person. I don't know if I can do that, but if it's your life or his, I think I could do it. Please?" Kate walked up to him. "Please. I don't want to lose you. I love you, and you're all I've got. You're spending money on me, buying me clothes, tampons, makeup, food. I want to be able to contribute something. So if I'm your partner, maybe the Agency will pay me," Kate reasoned.

Rick looked away for a moment. It was past time to tell her. "If all that's bothering you is not being able to pay for anything, I have something I need to tell you. I had planned to wait for the check to show up before saying anything, but you need to know now. Your parents both had life insurance policies worth $700,000 each and as their sole beneficiary, you're entitled to that money. You'll get a check for 1.4 million dollars in a week or so."

"Did you say 1.4 million...dollars?" Kate wanted to make sure she heard right.

"Yes, 1.4 million dollars," Rick repeated. "It should show up any time now. So you'll have your own money."

Kate smiled wide and kissed him. "One point four million dollars. …All because my parents are dead." That was the heartbreaking part. "I'm rich." She kissed him again.

Rick nodded. "Yes, you are."

She tilted her head and looked at him. "That doesn't change my wanting to be your partner. I still want you to teach me how to shoot."

Rick sighed. He thought her having her own money would change her mind. She could help him pay for things like food.

He thought about it and relented. Better that Kate learn from him than a stranger. "Fine, I'll teach you how to shoot." Regardless, it was still a long way until she was his partner.

Kate squealed, put her arms around his neck, and kissed him over and over again.

"I'll look up a gun range where you can practice," Rick told her, and she kissed him again.

~oo0oo~

Rick found a gun club that they could attend. It was an indoor range. He chose Course B for her for $149. This one was five different weapons and 50 shots. The five were a Ruger .22 caliber, a .38 caliber revolver, a Glock 17, a Glock 21, and a 44 Magnum. He would include a course that allowed rifles after he was satisfied with how she shot these.

"WOW!" Kate looked around and spotted a strange weapon. "What's this?"

"That's a Tavor. You won't be firing that weapon. What you will be firing are handguns. You get fifty shots and five different weapons, so just ten shots per weapon," Rick informed her. "You will load each weapon and fire your ten shots. Then we'll decide which one is right for you."

"Okay." Kate watched as the man in charge showed her every weapon she would be using and where the ammunition for each was. There were some safety rules she had to follow. She wore mandatory eye protection, and ear protection, and had hands-on instruction on how to load each weapon.

Rick stepped in and told her how to stand, hold her arms, and how to grip the weapon. "We'll start with the Ruger since it'll have the least blowback. You know how to load your weapon, so please do so."

Rick watched her load her weapon, checking to see she stood correctly and held her arms right as well as her weapon. Kate fired just one shot and decided she liked it. So she fired off all ten shots.

Rick brought in the paper target. "Not bad, not bad at all."

Except Kate wasn't happy with herself. She didn't place all ten shots in the red zone, which was dead center. Determined to do better, she switched to the .38 caliber weapon and found this one had a little more kick. Still, she wasn't happy with her score.

The Glock 17 was next, and she realized it had even more kick. Again, she wasn't happy with her score. Kate tried the Glock 21. She discovered it had about the same amount of kick as the Glock 17, and she wasn't pleased with her score.

The 44 Magnum was next, and it had the most kick of all. It was also bigger. Kate didn't like how it felt in her hand and was unhappy with her score.

"I need more practice," she announced.

Rick definitely agreed with that. "Yes, you do. I suggest you use Package A. The Ruger, the .38 Special, and the Glock 17 seem to be your weapons."

Rick paid the $109, and they tried again. Three weapons and fifty shots meant she could shoot more often with her weapon of choice.

They left secure in the knowledge that Kate needed more practice. Though, Rick had to admit that for someone who had never fired a weapon before, Kate did better than he thought she would. But it would be a long time before she became his partner.
