It takes a lot to adjust to life back on Earth after traveling with the Doctor and Ian finds it too hard some days. When the Doctor accidently lands in Ian and Barbara's flat one night, Ian asks to travel with him again. The Doctor gives Ian the perfect advice he needs not to travel among the stars but to live happily on Earth.

Just as the Doctor is about to wipe Donna's memories in Journey's End, he learns that she actually does have the mental capacity and that she need not have her memories wiped.
