A/N: Hey everyone! I do not own any of the g-boys, but I have a few OC outside of them that were of my creation. Here's another idea that I came up with recently that I thought would be a challenge to write. Let me know what you think. I'm not sure about this one. I also want to apologize for the long stint between posts. Life is crazy and things pop up and we create new hobbies. I do hope to finish one of my Fan fictions one day, but in all honesty I have no confidence in my writing so I drop off because I feel that I either go off topic or away from the main point of the story because I hyper focus on things (aka relationships...born romantic lol). Thank you for those who have stuck around to see where this goes...whatever direction it may lead. :)
Summary: After Project Meteor, the G-boys went their separate ways. 7 years later, a new group has made an appearance. The movement is the "Genesis" movement. The G-boys come together to help preventers bring a halt to the illegal experiments that have been taking place. Eventually Duo/Heero get together fic. The story centralizes around the "Genesis" movement and the trials and tribulations G-boy's face.
Sake: Thanks for sticking around. I always look forward to your comments, believe it or not . your posts have spurred inspiration in some of these chapters. Your comments are much appreciated! :)
The Space Between Us
Chapter 13
Duo's POV:
I looked over at the clock on the wall for what seemed like the 4th time in the last hour. I pet Jynx absently and blankly stared at the television, which no longer held my interest. I honestly shouldn't be this anxious. I left him in Medical. He was fine and had passed out, but what surprised me was the way he was acting before he passed out. I mean, I know he was on some pretty strong pain meds and I shouldn't think too much into it but...
I heard the doorknob of the apartment jiggle and practically threw Jynx out of my lap to hide out of view of the front door. I had no clue how many people had a key to Heero's place, and I was not about to be surprised if the guys came through that door.
Jynx 'mrd' in distaste at my actions and hissed for good measure before trotting off toward the back of the apartment, probably to lie on my current bed.
It surprised me to see Wu-fei stepping through the door with Heero passed out in his arms. I slowly popped my head out from my hiding spot behind the couch and tilted my head at him in curiosity and confusion. One of my eyebrows raised in question when he looked my direction. I saw him jump slightly and give me a frown.
I shifted my eyes to Heero and back on Wu-fei. He didn't warrant me with any tell for me to know what was going on. He simply shut the door softly, toed on his shoes and walked down the hall toward Heero's room.
I silently followed the pair and leaned on the wall outside of Heero's door. I was at a loss. Never in my life would I have thought I would see that; Heero with his guard down and trusting someone implicitly. I know he has changed but his tells have changed little. He still seemed to have anxiety issues, probably some PTSD like the rest of us, and I'm not even going to get into the mental baggage he carries.
I looked up from my crossed arms when Wu-Fei came out of the room and shut the door. He tilted his head in the livingroom's direction and turned to walk. Doing as he asked, I followed him to the other room. I saw him making himself at home behind the Island of the kitchen and fixing himself some tea. I took a seat across from him on the other side of the Island and waited.
Wu-fei finished steeping his hot tea and leaned his elbows and arms on the Island, taking a sip from his tea. I took that as my queue.
"Sooo..."
"So what, Maxwell?"
I rolled my eyes at the use of my last name. I thought we got past that years ago. Guess I am back to square one with him.
"Rough Day?" I questioned.
"You can say that."
He never was much of a talker. I sighed and got up to grab a power drink from the fridge behind him before taking a seat on the counter next to the sink. We sat there in silence for a few minutes in comfortable silence.
"How did his tests go? Everything check out okay? Anything I should know or be concerned about? I texted him a couple of times throughout the day, but he didn't answer."
He pulled a brown bag out from his preventer's jacket and set it on the table. "the testing went as well as expected. Sally has ordered him off his leg for at least a week. She is finishing up the repair on his prosthetic, so he will have to use his temporary one for the time being and stay off his leg to prevent further damage while the area around the new plates heals."
I nodded in understanding and pointed to the bag. "Take it that is his medications?"
Wu-fei pulled four bottled out of the bag and put them on the far end of the Island against the wall, then handed me a piece of paper explaining what he should take and how often. "As you know, he doesn't like medications. The pain meds she has him on have a mild sedative in it as well to help with his anxiety, it makes him drowsy." He offered in explanation and took another sip from his cup.
"There is an antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, and his normal anxiety meds along with the pain meds. The last two have been difficult for him." He motioned to the anxiety and pain meds.
"He hasn't been taking the anxiety medication as of late. He hasn't seemed to need them as often since he left Relena."
Why am I not surprise, that woman would cause anybody to need anxiety medication with the pressure she puts on people, basing off what I have witnessed lately? I nodded and set the paper under the four bottles and took a drink myself.
"That would explain his current situation." I motioned to his closed door. Jynx entered and started weaving through Wu-fei's legs. He snorted at her antics, set down his tea, and picked her up to pet her.
"He's had a long day. Having to interrogate while being medicated and with the new information we received, anybody would be mentally exhausted."
"Care to share?" I reached over and scratched Jynx behind the ear.
"Confidential you know that, Maxwell"
I shrugged. Hey, can't say I didn't try. I've always been a curious kinda guy. "I get it, but I had to try. It's not like 'Genesis' is unknown of."
Wu-fei nodded, set Jynx down on the counter and picked up his cooling tea. "They find their ways to spread their radical beliefs."
We fell into silence again, since I knew poking him for information wouldn't get me anywhere.
"Anything else I need to know?" I asked.
"The Pain medications make him nauseous if he takes them on an empty stomach. The same goes with his anxiety medication. Just make sure he eats something when he takes them."
"You guys were pretty late, and either he never turned his phone back on or he forgot. Have ya' guys eaten yet?"
Wu-fei nodded. "We stopped by his favorite Chinese place before we came back here. He fell asleep on the ride back here." he set the empty teacup in the sink. "He was pretty beat after the interrogation. It took longer than we expected it to, but it was fruitful."
I nodded and took the vague information for what it was. "Did you find any lead on your guys' informant?"
Wu-fei shook his head, "nothing helpful."
"That sucks." I leaned back and crossed my arms.
He nodded and absentmindedly pet Jynx as we spoke. "He will probably be out for the rest of the night. His phone is back on and sitting on the bedside table. Did you need anything before I take off for the night?"
I shook my head, and he nodded. "Then I will see myself out. Have a good evening, Maxwell"
"You too 'Fei."
He smirked a little as he made his way to the door and put on his shoes, "it's Wu-fei, Maxwell."
I laughed softly and waved as he made his way out the door, shutting it silently behind him. Great...now what am I gonna do? My hand made its way to the back of my neck. I was hoping we could chill and watch a movie or something before he had to turn in for the night, but that was out. I let my hand drop and I sighed and looked around the empty apartment and my eyes landed on the porch.
The sun had gone down about an hour ago and the stars were out. I guess I could enjoy some time out on the deck before turning in myself. As if reading my mind, Jynx jumped off the count and made her way to the sliding glass doors. After shaking my head and doing a breathy laugh, I walked in that direction. I grabbed my music player off the end table by the couch and walked on out to the deck. I put my earbuds in and started up some calming music, grabbed a cigarette from the pack next to me, lit it, and leaned back in the lounge chair to stare at the sky.
My mind wandered back to my previous line of thought. I actually felt guilty for not being there while he went through the testing, but I just couldn't bring myself to be there after the exchanges the night before. I will not presume that Heero meant anything by the gestures he did and the things he said last night, but one could wish, right?
The man was straight as an arrow. I know I look girly, but my anatomy is definitely not something he would be interested in... right? I sighed and ran my hand through Jynx's fur as I contemplated my thoughts.
It wasn't any secret on how I liked both pastures... was it? I mean, given I didn't really get involved with the other side of the field until after Hilde... but I figured it was obvious. Then again, nobody really asked or acted like they were aware of my preferences.
When we were teenagers, Wu-fei would have definitely acted differently toward me. Heero would have probably avoided me at all costs if he knew, given his mental standpoint, and I am sure Trowa 'Triton' would have as well. He was a very secretive type of guy and I figure he wouldn't let on he was the same. Quatre wouldn't have acted any different, it was pretty obvious, to me at least, that he was not interested in women and I couldn't blame him; guy had 29 older sisters.
I never would have thought, seven years from then, that Wu-fei would take up company with bisexuals or homosexuals. I wouldn't have thought Heero would either. Then again, Wu-fei married a very independent woman that was 10 years his senior. Quatre hooked up with the quietest man of the group and Heero hooked up with the loudest and most annoying, persistent woman. Hilde and I were very close in personality, but after seven years... she had become more self-centered and selfish.
I shook my head. I didn't even want to go down that rabbit hole. I put the bud of my cigarette in the empty can that I used as a makeshift ashtray and continued to ponder as my soothing music played.
With a sigh, I looked down at the clock on my phone and rubbed my eyes. It was a quarter past 11pm. My brain was working at full speed and I wouldn't get any sleep. I set Jynx on the floor and made my way into the house, locking the sliding glass door behind me. I went into my temporary bedroom and grabbed my sleeping pills. There was no way I was going to get any sleep if I didn't forcibly shut my brain down. I took out two small pills and popped them in my mouth. I took a long drink and finished my power drink before settling myself down on the bed, allowing the soothing music to lull me to sleep. Tomorrow was another day and I couldn't avoid him forever.
I am just going to take it at face value and I was not about to ask him 'hey Heero, I know this is random but do you swing both ways?'. I felt my face heat at the thought and shook my head again, clearing the thought from my mind. The sleeping pills finally calmed my brain down enough to allow the music to pull me completely under for the night.
Heero's POV
I woke to rapid pounding at the front door. My mind was still groggy, my leg was slightly pulsing and the persistent pounding at my front door was bringing on a headache. With a groan I rolled over and looked at my clock, who the hell would be knocking at my door at 4 am In the morning.
I let out a sigh as I sat up and, as hurried as my body allowed, got into my wheel chair and made my way down the hall. I noticed that Duo's door was completely closed and he hadn't seemed to be awoken by the noise.
Unlocking my door, I pulled it open, irritation was present on my face.
"What the hell?" my brain took a minute to register whose shoes I was staring at. Patton leather, tan shoes with dark suit pants lead up to a matching blazer and light blue shirt and dark tie. By the time my eyes met the blondes he looked very much pissed. Why the hell was he here at this time, doesn't he ever sleep?
"Where is he, Heero," Quatre Asked, arms crossed in ire.
"Where's who, Winner? Do you have any idea what time it is? What did you do, take a red eye flight?"
He rolled his eyes in irritation and looked over my head before meeting my eye again, "There were none, I had to use the company jet. Now, where is he."
I backed up my wheel chair ran my hand through my hair, which must have come loose over night, and crossed my arms, "again, where is Who Winner."
"You know exactly who I am talking about." he growled out
I kept my mouth shut, he had yet to tell me why he was here at 4 am, trying to shake my door off its hinges.
The silence stretched for several minutes. Quatre's stance seemed to wind tighter as the silence continued, he was never one to take my silence well, which is quite hilarious considering his choice in a partner. I raised my eyebrow at him and matched him glare-for-glare, knowing eventually he would explain himself.
Quatre's jaw worked, I could see the anger flicker behind is blue eyes as he tried to contain himself, "I received a very worried call from Relena. She explained that you were in the hospital due to a work related injury and continued to rant about 'that street rat', I quote, being present ant making waves between you two and Wu-Fei."
Now I was supremely irritated, "and you found it acceptable to come tearing down my door at 4 am in the morning to ask me this?"
"I called, you didn't answer."
"I was asleep Quatre, did the information cause your memory to forget the time difference?" I questioned.
He finally dropped his arms and made his way in, sitting himself down at the island and continuing to stare me down. He didn't even bother removing his shoes...he is really looking to piss me off this morning.
I shut the door rather loudly and turned around to look at him, anger evident in my face, "She should be more concerned about her position then what is going on in my life. For your information, there has been a rift between her and I for several years now, or have you forgotten."
"That doesn't answer my question that you are trying hard to avoid answering. Where is he Heero." He never knew when to stop prodding. Sometimes it amazed me with someone with his abilities was so naive to others' emotions.
I rolled myself over to the fridge and pulled out a sports drink for myself and handed him one, "None of it concerns the others."
"It does concern your friends. He had dropped off the face of the planet, literally, and refused to take our calls. Why in the world is he back now."
"You're not going to drop the subject and seem insistent on staying here until you get your damn answers."
He leaned back on the counter and crossed his legs, taking on his business stance,"He is here on business for Howard. We ran into one another at the Cafe by the space port."
"That still doesn't answer my question, where is he." he demanded.
I slammed my drink down on the counter and glared, "If he wanted you to know he would have contacted you. Where he is or how we got back to speaking is not your concern. Go back to your business meeting, Quatre"
He sighed and set his drink down before dropping his stance, "I am concerned, you are my friend and in your current situation communicating with him isn't in your best interest. You already have issues and you don't need the added stress, if he was any type of man he would know that and not make contact. He has caused enough problems and I am not about to let him cause more with you in your state."
"My state of being or situation you so professionally call it isn't going anywhere. As you know they haven't figured out how to grow back lost limbs." I responded in an aggravated tone.
"I wasn't referring to that and you know it. What does Mikhail thing of the situation, do you think he would condone the behavior?"
I growled, "I am not a child, Winner and I would advise you not to talk to me as if I am."
"You're making a big mistake, if he wanted to reconnect he wouldn't have essentially disappeared. And after everything, his addictions and his missteps. Honestly Heero, its a bad idea."
"We all made missteps as you put it and all had or still have our own problems, the war made sure of that."
He shook his head, "That's besides the point Heero..."
I cut him off, "Quatre, I answered your question. If you want to know where he is staying I advise you contact him yourself."
He made a move to grab his phone out of his pants pocket, "At a more decent time! Jesus is it so earth shattering that you have to wake everyone up, Winner? Go back to your hotel and leave it for tomorrow. I am done with this conversation."
He replaced his phone in his pocket and glared, "This conversation isn't over, Heero. I assume you are off from work or not needed in office and can work remotely for the rest of the week, I will be in contact. Make sure to answer your phone and have it on." he threw away his empty bottle and saw himself out, slamming the door behind him.
I sighed and put my unopened drink in the fridge. His visit was not expected, he usually has Triton do his errands. I looked at the counter and noted that my medications were neatly lined up and smirked, leave it to Duo to know of my OCD tendencies. With another tired sigh I put the conversation out of my mind, locked my door, and turned off the lights before making my way back to my room to hopefully get a few more hours in of sleep. I will address the situation later, I am too tired to deal with it.
