10/21 Sunday

Seeing as today was her day off from school, and exams had finally ended, she decided to spend today relaxing.

She would just grab some groceries from the store and then head home to relax.

Fate, however, seemed to have other plans, because as soon as she left the grocery store.

"Hey, over here!"

Makoto glanced around, her eyes laying upon the twins hanging around a door to the Velvet Room.

"Oh. Hello there Justine, Caroline." Makoto greeted.

"H-Hey! How come you greeted Justine first?" Caroline snapped.

"It's simple." Justine smiled. "Makoto simply prefers my company over someone as loud-mouthed as you."

"Nuh-uh!" Caroline argued. "Makoto was just saving the best for last, that's all."

"Best at what? Yelling and scowling?" Justine scoffed.

"Why you…!" Caroline glared.

Makoto sighed. She was glad that the two of them were actually calling her by her name, but did they really have to fight so much?

"Did you two want me to bring you somewhere again?" Makoto asked.

"Yes, of course!" Caroline nodded.

"The place that we want you to bring us today is… one world halfway detached from this world- it is said that the time spent there is like a dream." Justine hinted.

"Like a dream?" Makoto repeated.

"Men and women of all ages supposedly swarm the land, forgetting reality in search of happiness and wonder." Caroline added.

"Hmm… that sounds similar to the time we watched those movies, but instead, it's in real life." Justice realized.

"It sounds like you're talking about an amusement park." Makoto realized. "Specifically, Tokyo Destinyland."

"Tokyo Destinyland… the name even sounds mythical." Caroline replied.

Makoto let out a giggle. "Did the two of you want to try out the rides and see all the toys and plushies?"

"NO!" both twins shouted simultaneously.

"W-We just had to see… this sinister trap that ensorcells humans for ourselves." Justine insisted.

"If you know where it is, then take us!" Caroline demanded.

"Alright then, follow me." Makoto told them, leading them off to Destinyland…

Immediately, both of the twins were taken in by everything Destinyland had to offer.

The sights, the spectacle, the rides, the toys, the stalls, all of it had completely captured their attention.

"Ah! That bear over there is walking on its hind legs!" Caroline gasped. "Is it some kind of shadow or something?!"

"N-No, that's just a costume." Makoto told them, stifling a giggle at their reactions.

"There's a castle over there, isn't there?" Justine asked, pointing. "Is there a king living there? Should we pay our respects?"

"Ah, well… the king is actually just a cartoon character…" Makoto pointed out.

Her explanations only seemed to have made the twins even more confused. Thankfully, she was saved from trying to explain further.

"The parade is starting!" a woman excitedly yelled.

"Go go go!" a young girl cried.

"W-What the heck is that?!" Caroline gasped.

The twins watched in awe as the different floats and performers of the parade passed them by.

"The gleeful music, the rhythmic, monotonous dancing… the grins across every spectator's face…" Justine trailed off, deep in thought. "This overstimulation is making me a little dizzy…"

"Oh dear… is it too much?" Makoto asked. "We can go somewhere quieter."

"Aha! I understand now!" Caroline declared. "This must be some kinda brainwashing scheme, right?"

"N-No, it's just a parade." Makoto insisted. "It's a beautiful show that people come to watch."

"Hmm… you say that, but even so, these people seem completely enraptured with the parade." Caroline noted. "It might be worth sticking around to investigate just how they're able to pull something like this off. Justine, let's conduct an investigation on the premises!"

"Yes, that sounds like a good idea." Justine nodded. "Lead the way, Makoto."

"You know…" Makoto trailed off, tilting her head. "You don't have to make up excuses to see the parade."

"J-Just take us to see it!" Both twins shouted.

An amused smile on her face, she led the twins to see the parade.

She took the twins to see the parade and many of the other attractions that Destinyland had to offer.

She had even gotten the two of them a pair of animal ear headbands to wear.

Their excuse was that they just had to make sure that they weren't brainwashing devices.

Holding in her laughter as they said that had been a bit of a struggle.

"Hmm… So that was it?" Caroline scoffed. "It wasn't nearly as exciting as you said it would be!"

"You say that, Caroline, and yet you were practically trembling with excitement the entire time." Justine replied. "What with all of your outbursts like, 'That duck looks sooo cute!' and, 'Let's get in line to meet the mouse!' and so forth…"

"I do remember you saying something like that." Makoto giggled.

"I-I said nothing of the sort!" Caroline shouted. "I-I was just going through the motions in the guise of a brainwashed human! That's all it was!"

Caroline frantically looked around, trying to find something to distract from her embarrassment.

"L-Look, over there!" Caroline shouted. "Another line! Let's go!"

Caroline quickly ran off to go to the line, Justine sighing as she did so.

"I suppose that we don't have a choice now." Justine muttered. "We had better catch up to her."

The two of them ran over to Caroline… only to eventually realize that the long line that she was in was the line to the bathroom.

"Ughhh… I can't believe we stood in line so long… for that!" Caroline snapped. "Isn't it a bit of a critical flaw to have the line be that long?!

"The line was almost as long as the line to take some of the rides…" Justine frowned. "At least the teacups were worth the wait."

"Well, that was a fun- er, functional assignment!" Caroline quickly said. "But I think that we've had about enough for today. Let's head back!"

"Just a moment, Caroline…" Justine insisted. "Since our master doesn't leave the Velvet Room, perhaps we could get him a small gift?"

"Ah, that reminds me!" Makoto realized. "I actually have a gift for you two."

"What?! A gift from you?!" Caroline gasped. "W-Well, what is it?"

Makoto pulled out another plushie from her bag, handing it to the twins.

"Cerberus!" they cried, quickly snatched it from her hands.

"Now you have another plushie to have tea parties with." Makoto laughed.

"W-We do not have tea parties!" Justine insisted. "But… thank you."

"Y-Yeah… thanks." Caroline mumbled. "But getting back to the master… Do you think we should get him a plushie too? Or maybe some mouse ears?"

"It's… interesting imagining Igor wearing mouse ears and holding a stuffed bear." Makoto said.

Despite herself, Justine couldn't help but let out a giggle at the mental image, causing Caroline to look at her in confusion.

"Uh… Justine?" Caroline muttered.

"W-What?!" Justine gasped, feeling more than a little embarrassed. "O-Oh, um… It seems that even I couldn't avoid the brainwashing. Please keep this a secret from my master…"

"Sure thing." Makoto promised. "But are you sure that it's the brainwash-"

"Moving on!" Justine exclaimed, cutting her off. "We have successfully confirmed the existence of a world of dreams. As such, we acknowledge your assignment as complete."

"It was interesting seeing the people here." Caroline added. "All of the smiles on their faces makes it seem as if they've been liberated from their everyday lives."

"Well, it's nice to take a break or vacation every now and again." Makoto mentioned.

"I see… still, to think that a human's desire to dream extends even into their time in the waking world." Justine noted. "It's rather curious for beings such as us, as we dwell in the space between dream and reality."

"Well, let's get going already before they try to brainwash us again!" Caroline insisted.

She felt a little closer to the twins.

STRENGTH CONFIDANT: RANK 8

After speaking to them for a little longer, Makoto brought them back to the Velvet Room.

Just as she entered, however, she saw the twins begin to panic.

"Ah! I forgot!" Caroline gasped.

The twins hastily made their way to a small table in the Velvet Room, snatching a piece of paper from it.

She wasn't able to get a clear glimpse of the entire thing, but she did see a bit of what appeared to be a drawing.

"Oh, did you two actually start trying to make your own art?" Makoto smiled.

"N-No!" Caroline quickly denied.

"Please, be quick with your business!" Justine insisted.

Makoto quickly fused some stronger personas before she went home for the day.

10/22 Monday

What she had expected to be a normal day of school had quickly turned into something very hectic. The moment she arrived, her attention was immediately drawn to the numerous police cars around the school.

"What the heck is happening?!" Morgana shouted from her bag.

"Ah, Niijima-san, there you are! Great timing!"

The Vice Principal walked over to her, looking extremely stressed over the current situation.

"Sir, what's happening? Why are the police here?" she asked.

"W-Well… it's nothing bad, I assure you. They're just… doing a bit of questioning, that's all." the vice principal said. "Could you try to help calm down the student body? Just… tell them to cooperate and not to interfere with them, ok?"

"Right, of course." Makoto nodded.

If the police were here, could they suspect that a student was a Phantom Thief? It… would make sense, considering Kamoshida was their first target.

She thought to quickly inform the others later.

"Oh, and also, the date of the school festival has been pushed back to the 25th." the vice principal continued. "Because of everything that's happened.

"I see… in that case, I'll have to contact the guest speaker to let them know."

"Oh, you've already gotten a guest speaker to help out?" the vice principal asked. "Wonderful! You're always on top of things, Niijima-san!"

More than the actual school staff, it seemed…

"Thank you, sir." Makoto nodded.

"And… One more thing." the principal said. "The police actually wanted to speak to you."

"W-What?! Me?!" Makoto asked. "Why would they want to speak to me?"

"Well, perhaps they thought that you would know something, as the Student Council President?" the vice principal assumed.

"I suppose, but…" Makoto frowned, before sighing.

She wouldn't be getting out of this, so she'd simply play along for now.

Seeing as there was still some time before classes, she went over to the police, who took her over to a small room that they had been lent.

"So, you're the student council president, correct?" the officer asked.

"Yes, that's correct." she nodded.

"And… you had some sort of involvement with him, didn't you?" the officer asked. "He tried to…"

"Have his way with me, yes." Makoto frowned.

"Do you… bear a grudge against him for that?" the officer asked.

Her frown deepened. Who wouldn't be angry about something like that?

"Well… I guess it's more that I feel sad. I'm sure that the volleyball and track teams suffered even more. I wish I could have done more to help them." she answered.

"Like, say… Ren Amamiya and Ryuji Sakamoto, right?" the officer asked. "They were involved with a dispute with Kamoshida as well."

"I know." Makoto nodded.

"Well, alright. Sorry for taking up your time." the officer apologized. "But there's just one more question."

"What is it?" Makoto asked.

The officer's partner nodded, giving him the go ahead.

"Do you think the Phantom Thieves are associated with this school?" the officer asked. "Not just Kamoshida, but since Juuya Kaneshiro targeted the school as well, but…"

"Right, the Phantom Thieves targeted those two." Makoto mentioned. "It's a shame that it came to that. If only there was someone else who's job it was to defend citizens from dangerous criminals like the Yakuza…"

The officer awkwardly looked away before coughing into his fist, his partner looking away with a grunt.

It seemed that she had touched a nerve.

Good.

"But… I honestly have no idea if the Phantom Thieves are involved with the school." Makoto lied.

"I see… Well, that will be all then." the officer said. "Thank you for your cooperation."

She went back to class, finding it hard to concentrate after the questioning.

It was worrying to think about what questions the police would be asking the others, but all she could do was have faith in them.

She let out a sigh of relief as the final bell rang, signaling the end of the day.

As she stepped out of school, she noticed her phone buzzing.

Seeing that Sojiro was asking her to help out at Leblanc, she quickly replied yes before setting out.

"Say, I heard that the police went over to your school today." Sojiro brought up.

Ren and herself looked up from washing the dishes.

"Yeah. I guess… it's cause of everything that's been happening there this year." Ren coolly said.

"Suppose so. Just make sure to stay out of trouble." Sojiro reminded him.

"Sojioooooo! Is the curry almost finished?" Futaba asked.

"Hold on, it's almost done." Sojiro chucked. "Speaking of… If we had to add something to the menu, what would you like it to be?"

"Hmmmmmmm…" Futaba trailed off, thinking hard. "Maybe curry spaghetti! Or curry udon! Oh! Oh! Curry pizza!"

"Heh… well, I suppose that'll be pretty easy, considering the current menu." Sojiro grinned. "What about you two?"

"Ah, well… it's hard to say… maybe donuts to add to the dessert menu." Makoto suggested. "It'd go well with coffee."

"Now there's a good idea." Sojiro smiled.

"Hehe… all of your food's super addicting, man!" Futaba grinned.

Suddenly, the door to Leblanc was flung open. She saw Ren's eyes widen when he saw who had arrived.

"Why haven't you answered my calls?"

Futaba's uncle levied a stern glare at them, his arms crossed in frustration.

"Leave now, or I'll call the police." Sojiro threatened. "I'm not giving you another cent!"

"What was that?!" Futaba's uncle snapped. "Don't mess with me!"

"Stop it!" Futaba shouted, standing up. "Sojiro didn't do anything wrong!"

She saw Futaba give the fiercest glare she could muster towards her uncle.

"I taught her that." Makoto thought to herself. "I'm so proud…"

"Shut your mouth, you brat!" the man shouted. "It's your fault that I'm in this mess!"

"Listen, Futaba's my daughter." Sojiro argued. "Even if you are her uncle, you don't have any connection to her anymore. We can take it to court if you want, but don't underestimate how hard I'll fight!"

"Ha! Even if you did adopt her, there's no way the courts will side with you over a biological family member!" Futaba's uncle smirked.

Makoto scowled. Her uncle, the courts… didn't any of them care what Futaba wanted?!

"Well, normally that would be the case… but I think your failed business ventures and massive debt might change some things." Sojiro brought up.

"Damn it! How did you…?!" the man trailed off, before his eyes landed on Futaba. "You… it's all your fault, you defective little bitch! You're not supposed to talk about things like that, you-"

"What makes you so sure it's her fault?" Makoto asked.

Futaba's uncle scoffed at her. "She's a bastard child who's never had a proper role model before. Of course she would be responsible. She's always been acting out ever since she was a small child."

Makoto clenched her fists in pure rage.

Was this the sort of treatment she had to deal with from her relatives?

Did she have to deal with this all the time back then?!

"T-The reason I'm like this is partly because of you!" Futaba screamed as she held back tears.

"You… little brat!" Futaba's uncle snapped, taking a threatening step forward. "I'll show you…!"

Makoto immediately rushed into action when she saw the man rearing back his fist, Sojiro right behind her.

Ren beat them both to the punch, however, quickly moving a frozen Futaba out of the way while affixing her uncle with a scowl.

Her uncle was so shocked that he fell over after missing the punch.

"Get. Out." Ren empathized, displaying a rare moment of anger.

"Y-You…! That was assault!" Futaba's uncle cried. "I'll sue!"

Ren froze, his eyes widening at the man's threat.

"The hell it was!" Makoto snapped. "You fell over on your own!"

"This delinquent attacked me! He's dangerous!" Futaba's uncle roared. "This cafe is finished, you hear me?!"

"I won't let you hurt them." Sojiro glared.

"Hah… you couldn't even protect Wakaba… what makes you think you can protect her daughter?" the man mocked.

He walked out in a huff, swearing revenge as he did so…

"God damn, what a pain in the ass." Sojiro sighed. "As if you didn't have enough problems."

"I'm… I'm so sorry…" Ren muttered. "I…"

"It's alright. I'm…glad that we're here. I just wish I was the one to step in." Sojiro said.

Ren didn't respond, sitting down at the stall, thinking to himself.

"Ren… are you ok?" Futaba asked.

"Yeah… I'm fine." Ren muttered. "It's just…"

"Just what?" Makoto asked.

"It's just like back then." Ren sighed. "Back when I protected that woman back in my hometown."

"We… won't let what happened to you back then happen again." Makoto expressed. "I promise."

"I know." Ren smiled. "I'm just glad Futaba's safe."

"But what about you?!" Futaba cried. "You're still on probation, you know?! don't want anything to happen to you… especially not because of me…"

"Don't worry. I won't let anything happen."

All three of them turned to Sojiro, seeing the serious expression on his face.

"I know that… before, I told you not to get involved in this sort of thing." Sojiro sighed. "I'm… glad you ended up not listening to my advice. If you had, then something could have happened to Futaba, and…"

Sojiro shook his head, not wanting to say any more.

"Either way, thank you. I promise to fight damn hard to protect all of you from that man." Sojiro assured them.

"Sojiro, I…" Futaba trailed off.

"Thanks, Boss." Ren smiled. "That… really means a lot to me."

"Don't mention it. I am your guardian after all. It's my duty to protect you two." Sojiro smiled.

The older man glanced over to Makoto.

"And since you're their friend, I'll protect you too." Sojiro promised.

"Oh! Thank you, Boss." Makoto expressed.

She felt like her bond with Sojiro was growing a bit deeper.

HIEROPHANT CONFIDANT: RANK 8

As Sojiro closed up shop for the day, Futaba and herself stayed behind, hoping to plan their next move.

"Futaba… do you think we should…"

"Youji Isshiki." Futaba said, cutting her off. "That's my uncle's full name."

"Then… you're fine with us targeting him?" Ren asked, wanting to make sure.

"I am." Futaba nodded. "But… I know this is kinda selfish, but… do you think we could take him on with just the three of us?"

"I… it would be possible, but… why do you ask?" Makoto wondered.

"I just… I'd have to explain to the others how my uncle treated me. I'm fine with telling you two, but the others… well, someday, I'll tell them, but…

not right now."

"I understand. Makoto nodded. "Then I will make a special exception, and the three of us can go and confront your uncle."

"Y-Yeah, but… I should probably tell you how things were for me." Futaba whispered.

"If it's too painful, you don't have to." Ren told her.

"N-No, even if it is painful, I have to tell you." Futaba insisted. "I have to let you know everything I can about my uncle before you try to change his heart."

Futaba began to spill everything about how her uncle had treated her. Most of it were things they had already heard from Sojiro, but hearing it the second time made her just as angry as before.

And the more that Futaba told them about how she was treated, the angrier she became. She noticed that Ren felt the same, but he hit it better than her. If there was any doubt in her mind as to whether she was going to change his heart, it was gone now.

"I just hope that… I won't be separated from you or Sojiro." Futaba whispered.

"Relax. It'll be fine." Ren promised, smirking as he ruffled her hair.

"H-Hey! Don't do that! I'll mess up your hair too!" Futaba threatened.

"I think it's messy enough already." Makoto giggled.

"And besides, you'd need an entire ladder to reach my head." Ren joked.

"I'm not that short!" Futaba argued, trying to reach for Ren's hair.

She was thankful that Ren's antics seemed to be putting Futaba in a less somber mood.

That said, they deal with Futaba's uncle soon.

"Futaba… are you ready?" Makoto asked.

"Uh-huh." Futaba nodded. "Let's do this! I let Sojiro know that I'd be hanging out with you two for a bit, so he won't suspect anything!"

"What about the calling card?" Ren asked.

"I'll send my uncle an anonymous text message." Futaba suggested.

"Got it. That works." Ren nodded. "Let's get moving then."

After confirming that Futaba's uncle was able to be targeted, the three of them made their way into Mementos.

Thankfully, their target was relatively close to the entrance of Mementos, so they were able to make their way there on foot rather quickly.

"Money, money, money…" Youji chanted, as if in a trance. "It doesn't matter who gives it to me. Just give me money…"

"Well, I can give you my two cents." Joker joked. "You're a real piece of garbage for what you're doing to Sojiro and Futaba, aren't you?"

"Bah! If you ask me, they should sell that little shop of theirs and give the money to me!" Youji ranted. "It's consolation money. Reparations! You have to! Give me! Money!"

"Why are you so obsessed with money anyway?!" Futaba snapped.

"If I have more money, I can keep gambling until I hit the jackpot!" Youji exclaimed. "But if you won't give it to me, I'll beat it out of you!

Youji became completely enveloped in a black and red aura, before dissolving and reforming into a large, blue, bipedal elephant.

"I'll teach you brats some manners!" Youji snapped. "I'll-"

"Would you just SHUT UP!" Makoto roared. "I am so sick of listening to you talk!

"H-Hey! Don't cut me off, you-"

"Oracle. Boost. Now." Makoto ordered.

"R-Right." Futaba nodded. "Ultra Charge!"

Makoto felt herself bursting with energy, wasting no time in blasting Youji with a powerful Freila.

"GRAHHH!" Youji cried out, falling to the ground.

"Joker!" Makoto shouted.

"On it!" Ren shouted.

The two worked as one, sticking Youji again and again before he managed to get up.

"T-That's not fair!" Youji cried. "How can you be so strong?!"

"… You should have stayed down." Makoto ominously said. "Oracle! Boost me again!"

"You got it!" Futaba exclaimed, boosting her offensive power once again.

"Thoth!" Makoto cried as the power began flowing through her.

A sophisticated looking monkey holding a book appeared before them.

"Megido!" Makoto shouted.

Right as Youji began to charge, Makoto blasted him with a sphere of Almighty energy.

Youji roared out in agony as his body felt as if it was being ripped apart.

Makoto refused to let out, blasting him with Megido after Megido until he stopped moving…

Slowly, his shadow form began to dissolve, revealing the broken and beaten form of Youji.

"Even if you wanted the money, why go this far?" Joker asked.

"Wakaba… She was always the favorite of the family…" Youji snarled. "Smarter, more talented… no one ever gave a shit about me, only her!"

"So what, you took out your anger on her daughter?! Joker snapped. "What the hell is wrong with you?!"

Youji fell to his knees in despair.

"It's just not fair!" Youji cried. "The one time anyone ever paid attention to me was the time I won a lot of cash at the pachinko machine! I thought I was fine being normal before, but then I realized that I… wanted more of that attention! Their praise! Their jealousy! So I kept gambling more and more, desperately chasing after everyone's approval…"

"And you ended up losing a lot of money, huh?" Futaba surmised. "And that's why you kept making Sojiro give you money!"

"Yeah… that's exactly it." Youji admitted.

Makoto walked up to him and grabbed him by the shirt, lifting him into the air.

"W-Wait! P-Please, I-"

She slammed her fist into his face, knocking him to the ground.

"Give me one good reason why I shouldn't reduce you to a stain on the ground!" Makoto snapped.

"P-Please, I'll do anything you ask!" the man cried.

Her grip tightened.

How dare he hurt Futaba! How dare he threaten Ren and Sojiro

I'll crush him!

"You…!"

"Q-Queen?"

Makoto's eyes widened, and she turned to see Futaba glancing at her with a concerned look on her face.

"Q-Queen, please stop." Futaba whispered, barely audible.

She took a deep breath, dropping Futaba's uncle to the ground.

"This is what you're going to do." Makoto glared. "You're going to confess to everything that you did and stop bothering Sojiro and Futaba. Understand?!"

"Y-Yes, of course! I promise!" the man muttered.

"For your sake, I hope you're telling the truth." Makoto glared. "I won't be merciful again."

"I… I understand." Youji muttered, the weight of his actions sinking in. "I'm so sorry Futaba. I'm… S-So sorry, Wakaba!"

"Alright." Ren nodded. "Looks like we're done here."

"Y-Yeah." Futaba nodded. "Everything… Is going to be ok now."

The three of them left Mementos, Ren and Makoto bringing Futaba to her home, making sure to assure her that everything would be ok.

After they dropped her off, however, Ren gave her a look that screamed, 'We need to talk.'.

"Ren, I already know what you're going to sa-"

"Makoto, listen to me." Ren said. "That was… very brutal."

"He was weak compared to other targets." Makoto pointed out. "And I didn't want to give him any chance to retaliate."

"Even so, don't you think you went a little far?" Ren questioned. "If… Futaba wasn't there to stop you, would you have…"

He didn't finish his question, but she already knew what he was going to ask. Because she was asking herself the same question.

"I don't want to talk about this Ren!" she snapped. "I got carried away a bit, that's all. I mean, who wouldn't after what Futaba told us about him?!"

"Alright. I… can't exactly say that I wasn't at least considering roughing up a bit myself." Ren sighed, accepting her response. "If that's all, then it's fine. But… in the future… Please try to keep calm, ok? I don't want you to do something you'll regret. Something you can't take back."

"I'm telling you, it's fine!" Makoto replied, a bit more forcefully than she intended.

"... Alright. Fine." Ren frowned. "If that changes though… I'll be here for you."

He looked as if he wanted to say more, but held his tongue.

"I know. Thank you." Makoto whispered.

The two of them said their goodbyes before heading home for the day.

As she went home for the day, she realized once again just how much power she held…

The target fell much faster than she thought it would. She was… Getting very strong…

But did she trust herself… to hold that kind of power responsibly…?
