Trying to travel through a forest at night with no idea where you should go turned out to be a pretty bad idea."Hey, Arthur ! Do you think we will find a city soon ?" the kid suddenly asked as he walked beside him. "I'm not sure..." The blonde had to admit.
The rather pessimistic response of his companion did nothing to darken the mood of the teenager. "I hope we'll reach it soon ! And maybe find out my name, it's weird not knowing it..."
"You sure are talkative, aren't you ?" Arthur asked. The child seemed to interpret Arthur's statement wrong, the answer was rather nervous "Uh- yeah ? I mean- there isn't much to do other than walking and talking. And we are companions now, right ? I thought we should get to know eachother and stuff..."
"Hey, it's okay. Just something I noticed, you can continue to talk with me" he reassured the child which lights up again. "Alright ! So anyway-"
The sentence couldn't be finished when suddenly a loud thunder sounded in the distance. "W-What was that ?" the kid asked as he looked up at the sky before turning to Arthur. "Don't worry, it's just some thunder. There's probably a storm on the way so let's seek shelter" the older explains.
"Oh, that sucks... Well, at least it isn't raining yet !" The child shouldn't have said that, 'cause the second the sentence was spoken Arthur could feel the first rain drops falling on his head. It was pouring in mere moments.
"SHIT-" the older cursed, and took the younger's hand inorder to get them to someplace dry as fast as possible. Arthur didn't know how fast the child could run and he didn't want to lose him in the storm. Better to hold hands while they run. He could also imagine more comfortable things that possibly getting himself and the child with him sick because they wanderer around in a dark forest during a thunderstorm so he wanted to be as fast as possible. Not to mention the danger of falling trees and in the worst case a lightning strike. So yeah, seeking shelter as fast as possible was pretty important right now.
He signed a breath of relief when he saw a small cave. Arthur didn't know how long it took them to find it but what he did know was that both he and the boy were completely drenched.
When they finally got out of the rain he pulled off his coat and pressed the water out of his hair. "You should get out of your overcoat as well, we don't want to get sick afterall. I'll look around and see if I find something I could make a fire with to dry ourselves" The child nodded and did as the older instructed while Arthur looked around the cave, turning his back to the teen. He was lucky, there were a few old branches in the cave, he picked them up to return with them to the kid. Maybe he could-
Suddenly a blue light shone up behind him. The blonde turned to see what happened and-
The kid was burning.
He didn't even have the mind to curse when let the branches fall as he ran to grab his coat. Arthur by no means is an expert at helping people who are burning blue or burning in general. There is also a chance that he forgot some important part of the whole ordeal, but he's pretty sure you can suffocate fire with cloth. And since his coat is wet the chance is pretty small that it would catch fire, too.
For the love of all things holy, Arthur hoped the kid wasn't going to die. He isn't as naive to think the teen would remain unharmed after literally burning , he just prayed he could keep the child alive long enough for them to reach civilization.
"WAIT- WAIT I'M FINE !" the kid suddenly yelled. Arthur stood still before him, hands holding the coat and ready to throw it over the other's head.
"What ?"
"I- I don't know but- look ! I- I'm not getting hurt ! I'm fine !" the child explained, holding up his arm to show the older. And he was right. The teen was completely unharmed. "H-How ?" the blonde asked perplexed. He might not remember much but Arthur is almost sure humans should not spontaneously combust into blue flames and remain completely unharmed.
"How'd that happen ?" He asked, having clammed down from the initial shock. "I'm not sure..." the kid admitted. "I took off my coat like you told me too. And then when you turned to look for firewood I was bored and wanted to take a look at my weapon.I pulled it out, and then this suddenly happened" he added, gesturing to his body engulfed in flames.
Arthur looked the boy up and down again. It's true that he held the drawn katana. Arthur also noticed that the boys ears grew longer and pointier.
"... I don't think this is normal human behavior" Arthur finally admitted. The child shrugged "I don't know... do you have a weapon, too ? Maybe if you draw a sword you'd start to burn too" the child questioned.
Well considering how little they remember , it could be worth a try. Arthur didn't have a tail though, so maybe he doesn't have flames like the kid afterall. He only had one weapon next to him when he woke up and-
"- well there was a claymore next to me-" Arthur thought out loud. "Really ? Where is it ? I didn't notice you carrying it" the child cut him off, asking almost excitedly.
Oh- right. He didn't take the claymore with him. Fuck. "I- uh... I forgot to take it with me..." Arthur confessed.
"You...forgot ?"
The older one nodded. "Well, it's not the first thing you forgot, now is it ?" the child joked. And Arthur couldn't help but chuckle. "Well , I suppose you have a point" he admitted.
Now that the cave was light with the blue flames of his companion Arthur could make out the features of the child. He had black hair and wore a school uniform. He still had his sword out in the open as he continued to laugh at his own joke. His companion definitely wasn't older than sixteen or seventeen and was obviously still in school- wait.
"Hey, kid. Can I have your black overcoat real quick ?" Arthur suddenly asked. The kid , although a little confused by the sudden request, hands the older the clothing.
It was dry, probably because he laid next to the still flaming kid. A short look into the inside of the collar and Arthur found what he was looking for.
"Your name is Rin Okumura" he announced triumphantly. The kid's eyes widen "what ? How'd you find that out ?" Rin asked curiously.
"The nametag in your uniform ! I thought it looked like a school uniform and I was right. Your name is Rin Okumura and you're about sixteen based on your looks and uniform" Arthur concluded.
Rin at this point grinned from ear to ear "THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH !" he nearly yelled as he tackled Arthur in a hug, nearly throwing them both to the ground. The older couldn't help hugging the younger back "it's okay, really. I barely did anything"
Then he noticed that he barely felt the flames. Right, the flames ! Arthur nearly forgot about those. "Okay Rin, let's get back to dealing with those flames. Do you have any idea how they work ? Or maybe a gut feeling about how to use them?"
The other just shook his head looking down.
What was Arthur even thinking asking that. Ofcourse Rin wouldn't remember, nothing in this universe seemed to ever be easy for them.
He let of a heavy sigh "let's think logically about this. You said those flames came out when you drew your sword ? Have you tried putting it back ?" Rin did as he's told and just like that, the flames vanished.
"You're really smart, Arthur ! I didn't even think of that" the teen gushed. Rin was seriously easy to impress. "It's okay, really" he replied.
"Now that we know how to at least put the flames back out, do you think you could draw it again ? Maybe we could light a fire with those flames or atleast dry ourselves" the older asked.
"I- I'm not sure ? I'll try..." Arthur nods and quickly gets the dry branches he let fall earlier and sets them up. Soon after the cave was doused in blue again.
Rin closed his eyes, seemingly concentrating on trying to light the wood. He stretched a hand out and soon the crackling of fire could be heard.
"Good job, kid !" Arthur congratulated Rin as he put his coat near the blue fire to dry it. The other put his sword back. Satisfied with his performance Rin leaned back. Tail swooshing behind him happily. "You think we'll find out a lot tomorrow ?" he asks.
"I'm sure of it. But let's wait out the storm first, okay ?" the older replied.
