Jaune Arc, Ace Attorney

Case 1 - Turnabout Huntsman

*BANG* *BANG* *BANG*

The judge banged his gavel against the judge's table, echoing loudly.

"Mr. Darc! There will be no more interruptions in my courtroom! Do I make myself clear?"

Jaune practically jumped, "Yes, yes sir!"

The judge gave Jaune a skeptical look, but continued on.

"Now, then, Mr. Xiao-long, if you would be so kind as to provide your account of events?"

Yang shrugged. "Yeah, sure, whatever." She replied, nonchalantly.

Yang rose her fist to her face, and looked at it, polishing one of her fists with the other hand.

"So, it's true that I just waltzed in there, looking for some information, right? I think Mr. Xiong's description of events is accurate up until that point. I like that he used the word "waltzed" as well. Got an elegant feel to it, you know?"

She continued, "But everything after that is hogwash, I'd like to say. I did ask for information, but it was a polite way, y'know. And only after ordering a drink as a normal paying customer."

Suddenly, she slammed her arms on to the defendant's stand's railings, her eyes glowing about red. (The suddenness of the action actually caused Jaune to jump a little bit, but thankfully, nobody had really been paying attention to him.)

"But he accuses me of being the one who was being violent? He was the one who started it!"

In the next instance, she seemed to have calmed down, and went back to focusing on fiddling with the side of her hair. (Jaune was surprised she could calm down so quickly.)

"In any case, that's all I really have to say about that."

"So, you mind if I head out of here, now? I got classes to get to, homework to get done, and all that."

Jaune sweatdropped. Wait was that all? He expected something more substantial or a stronger defense, or something. All Yang had was her own claims of innocence, which seemed to be very-ill founded, if anything. Not really much to prove her version of events.

Ozpin, meanwhile, calmly sipped on his hot chocolate.

"No, Ms. Xiao-long, you may not yet leave. Court is still in session, and the case is still far from over."

Yang clicked her tongue with a quick "tsk" and returned to fiddling with her hair. "Whatever." She muttered.

The judge seemed slightly irked by her defiant attitude, but didn't bother to address it.

"Now then, Mr. Darc, you may begin your Cross-Examination."

"My...my, uh, what now?"

The judge sighed, and rubbed the creases between his eyebrows. "You know, one of the most basic and fundamental parts of being a defense attorney, pressing the defendant and/or witness's statements to get closer to the truth of events, from their perspective."

"Oh, oh right, yeah. The, the cross-examination! The one where you examine the crosses in their statements and examine them...with crosses, and stuff"

The judge gave Jaune a look.

"Sorry." Jaune replied. It was the only thing, in this situation.

Then Jaune stiffened. 'Wait, I'm a defense attorney now? Since when?!'

Jaune took a deep breath, and the slapped his own checks. 'Ah, well, I guess I'll just roll with it, then. I don't want to get Yang in trouble, so I'll try to help her out where-ever I can.'

CROSS EXAMINATION

"..."

"...Sorry, I don't quite remember all the things you said, could you please repeat them?"

"Really, vomit-boy?"

Jaune scratched the back of his head sheepishly. "Yeah, sorry."

Ozpin calmly took a sip of his hot chocolate.

Yang rolled her eyes. "Well, alright. But just this once."

"But everything after that is hogwash, I'd like to say. I did ask for information, but it was a polite way, y'know. And only after ordering a drink as a normal paying customer."

Suddenly, she slammed her arms on to the defendant's stand's railings, her eyes glowing about red.

"But he accuses me of being the one who was being violent? He was the one who started it!"

"In any case, that's all I really have to say about that."

"So, you mind if I head out of here, now? I got classes to get to, homework to get done, and all that."

"..."

Jaune sweatdropped. "Yang, did you really have to repeat all your actions, too, while you were speaking?"

Yang shrugged. What, you never heard of method acting, vomit boy?"

Jaune sighed. Oh well, time to get on with it.

CROSS EXAMINATION

"So, it's true that I just waltzed in there, looking for some information, right? I think Mr. Xiong's description of events is accurate up until that point. I like that he used the word "waltzed" as well. Got an elegant feel to it, you know?"

Press

"So, you agree with everything up until that point?" Jaune asked.

"I guess." She replied, nothing particularly objectionable about it, I'd say."

"Hmmm... alright."

"But everything after that is hogwash, I'd like to say. I did ask for information, but it was a polite way, y'know. And only after ordering a drink as a normal paying customer."

Press

"And just how exactly did you ask for information, if I may ask?

Yang went on playing with her hair. "Oh you know, the usual. Just make some goo-goo eyes at a few guys, get them to buy some drinks, and flirt with them a little. Nothing bad, nothing illegal."

Jaune drooped exasperatedly as he sweatdropped. 'That sounds like nothing but bad news to me.'

"Well, alright." Jaune said, "Anything else to add?"

"No, I think that's it." She said, "But..."

"But...?"

"But he accuses me of being the one who was being violent? He was the one who started it!"

Press

"Are you absolutely sure about that, Yang?" Jaune asked, "I mean, according to your own testimony, you bought a drink, right? And there were people buying you drinks, too? So, wouldn't the natural course of events following that be to...y'know, actually drink the drinks?"

"What are you implying, vomit-boy?" Yang's voice grew dangerously sharp for a moment, and Jaune could've sworn he saw her eyes glow red for a moment. Jaune swallowed.

"Nothing, nothing!" Jaune insisted, "Just that maybe your version of events might be a little unclear, or something, haha."

Ozpin took another sip of hot chocolate, "You're really digging your own grave here, Mr. Arc. Well, not that I mind, though."

'Please do mind!' Jaune thought to himself, 'I don't know what I'm doing, at all!'

Yang, however, surprisingly seemed to have calmed down, going back to fiddling with her. "No," she insisted, "I'm perfectly clear on my version of events."

"Okay..." There wasn't much Jaune could say in response to that, lest he provoke another outraged response from Yang.

Ozpin took another sip of hot chocolate out of his mug.

"In any case, that's all I really have to say about that."

Press

"Really, you don't have anything more to say than that? No other details, or anything?"

"Not that I can think of at the moment, no."

"So, you mind if I head out of here, now? I got classes to get to, homework to get done, and all that."

Press

"OBJECTION!"

A loud voice suddenly startled Jaune before he could start speaking or asking Yang anything. Even the judge seemed surprised at the sudden outburst.

It was Ozpin, point his cane at the young huntress-in-training.

"Wha-what?" She asked.

"As you yourself should already be fully aware of, Ms. Xiao-long, classes for Beacon Academy have not started yet. I understand that you might be anxious to get out this courtroom, but trying to worm your way out of taking responsibility for the consequences of your own actions is behavior unbefitting of a future huntsman, as the one of the proud Heros of Vale, sworn to protect its peace and justice."

Ozpin took one last sip of hot chocolate out of his, before slamming it against the table, and breaking it. (Oddly enough, Jaune noted, the shattered pieces just seemed to disappear into thin air.)

"What kind of example are you setting for others, Ms. Xiao-long, by trying to absolve yourself from responsibility? Can you still call yourself a huntsman or huntswoman after that?!"

Yang seemed to shrink under Ozpin's fierce gaze and speech, before going back to playing with her hair. "Alright, alright already, I get it!" She said, "I won't try to run away, alright?!"

"Mmmmm..." Ozpin let out a low murmer, as if satisfied. He put his cup-hand on the table, and another mug - seemingly out of nowhere, seemed to just slide into his hand. For a second there, Jaune though Ms. Goodwitch might've accompanied him to the courtroom, but Jaune couldn't see her around anywhere.

'Is nobody else seeing this?!' He though to himself, 'Am I going crazy, or did that mug literally just appear out of nowhere?!'

Ozpin took a sip of coffee out of his mug.

My apologies for interrupting you, Mr. Arc." Ozpin said, cordially. "You may continue."

"Huh? Oh, uh, yeah."

CROSS EXAMINATION END

'Well, geez,' Jaune thought to himself, 'I don't really think I learned much from that, did I?'

Jaune, lost in his own thoughts, did not notice the lump of red mass standing now right beside him. Jaune rubbed his chin with his forfingers, lost in thought.

'I mean, I guess I could keep pressing on the line of reasoning that Yang might've been drunk at the time, but that wouldn't really help her case, would it?'

Jaune drooped over exasperatedly. 'Besides, I don't want her to get mad at me, again.'

"Ooooooh, that meanie!" Came a voice from right besides Jaune, "Don't bully Yang, dang it!"

Jaune finally looked over at his side.

"Wha-?! Ruby?!"

"Took you long enough to notice!"

"How long have you been here?!"

"Uh, since right after you saw me in the audience stand? But you were so lost in your defense lawyering that I don't think you notice me." She said.

She gave him a thumbs up, "Good job, by the way. Except for that part where you got Yang angry. I never knew you were also a defense lawyer, too, Jaune!"

Jaune sweatdropped as he drooped exaggeratedly, 'Yeah, I never knew I was defense lawyer myself until recently, either.'

"Ms. Rose," Ozpin interjected, "If you would, please return to the audience stand. It is against Vale Courthouse Judicial Policy to allow a huntsman or huntress-in-training on the defense or prosecution stands, especially if they have any sort of relation to the defendant in question, because of a possible conflict of interest."

"What...?! But Jaune's on the stands, isn't he...?"

Jaune started panicking. For a moment, he thought Ozpin might just expose that he got kicked out of Beacon already.

But Ozpin made no such indication of letting out the secret.

"Ms. Rose, if you would please..." Ozpin repeated.

"Awwww...Alright..."

Ruby exited the stand.

"Now then..." Ozpin continued, before pausing. "Ms. Rose, what are you up to now?"

Ruby chuckled, having re-entered the defense stand just as quickly as she had left it. But now, there was something a little different about her.

"Just who is this Ruby Rose you speak of? I am clearly nt her at any rate! Instead I am the magical girl of LOVE and JUST, er, um wait, give me a second..."

"..."

"..."

"..."

"I am the Magical Girl of Love and Justice, Truby Wrose! Yes! That is my new name now!"

Jaune facepalmed. The whole thing was so ridiculous, he didn't know what to say.

Ozpin calmly took a sip of his hot tea.

"...I'll allow it." He said, nonchalantly.

Jaune practically choked on his spit. 'You will?!'

The judge banged his gavel. "Order! Order! Order in the court!" He took a deep breath, as if to calm himself. "Well, even if you'll allow it, Mr. Ozpin, as the highest authority in this courtroom, I really must obje - "

Ozpin waved his hand in front of the judge. For a second, Jaune though he saw the judge's eyes become all swirly-like, before they returned to normal.

"Very well." The judge declared, "This is a highly unusual case, but I'll allow it!"

He banged the gavel against his desk, officially officiating it.

Jaune couldn't help but wonder just what exactly Ozpin had been doing with that hand of his, but now he wasn't really sure he wanted.

"...Magic." Ozpin answered, as if reading Jaune's mind.

"...Ri-right..." Jaune was a little freaked that Ozpin seemed to have guessed his thoughts, but it could've just been a coincidence.

Ozpin probably just said that in response to the curious look on Jaune's face. Probably. Most likely. At least, Jaune hoped so.

He really didn't want to consider the possibility that Ozpin really could read minds, and was reading his mind right now.

Meanwhile, Ozpin took a calm sip of whiskey out of his cup, and if one looked closely, hey might just have spotted a very slight smirk of amusement on his face.

"Anyways, I trust you'd want to continue cross-examining the defendant, Mr. Arc."

"Huh? Oh, I, uh, yeah."

To be completely honest, Jaune didn't really know where he could go from here, but it looked like he's have no choice to continue with that line of reasoning...

"Well, carry on, then," Ozpin replied, as took a sip of vodka from his mug.

"Right...Thanks."

CROSS EXAMINATION 2

"So, it's true that I just waltzed in there, looking for some information, right? I think Mr. Xiong's description of events is accurate up until that point. I like that he used the word "waltzed" as well. Got an elegant feel to it, you know?"

"But everything after that is hogwash, I'd like to say. I did ask for information, but it was a polite way, y'know. And only after ordering a drink as a normal paying customer."

Press

Jaune wasn't sure if wanted to this, but...Eh, no other choice. He had to see this through to the end.

"So, Yang," Jane started, "Do you remember what you order as a drink...?"

Yang went back to fiddling with her hair. "...Honestly, no, not really. Does it really matter much, anyway?"

"...Maybe not..." Jaune admitted. 'But I feel like I've just got a piece of important testimony there.'

"Anyways,," She continue, "I was just acting as a normal customer."

"But he accuses me of being the one who was being violent? He was the one who started it!"

Press

For some reason, Jaune felt a loud swelling build up inside of him.

It was weak evidence. It was very weak evidence, based on subjective testimony, but...

He had to pounce on the opportunity!

"OBJECTION!"

His loud "objection startled the whole courtroom, except Ozpin, who just calmly took a sip of milk out of his cup.

"Wha-What is it, vomit boy?" Yang asked.

"Just earlier, you clearly testified that you remember what happened in your own version of events "perfectly clearly". But here, just now, you also just testified before the court that you didn't even remember the name of the drink you just order!"

Yang drew her arms back, folding them across her chest, "Yeah, yeah, so what?! It's bot like that was an important detail, or anything!" She insisted.

And she was probably right. She was probably right, but...

"Even so!" Jaune objected, "That proves that your testimony is consistent!"

Yang still had her arms crossed.

"...So?" She asked, "It's not like we all perfect memories or anything. But that doesn't mean my memory of the important events are wrong or anything."

"I, uh, well, that's..." Jaune paused, 'Geez. What do I do now? I though I had something, but...'

Jaune knew he was pursuing a weak line of reasoning, but now he was completely stumped as to how to proceed.

"Jaune!" Ruby (sorry, "Truby"), "Don't bully my sister! And aren't you supposed to be defending her, in the first place? Not nitpicking everthing she says!"

Ozpin cleared his throat.

"I believe," He said, "Mr. Arc is asking for another witness to the incident to take the stand? As would be par the course for inconsistent testimony."

"Yes!" Jaune said, enthusiastically, "That's it! That's exactly hat I was trying to do!"

(It wasn't. But nobody else needed to know that.)

The judge cleared his throat. "Very well." He said, "I'll allow it."

Ozpin glanced at Jaune. "Buckle up, young Arc. This is where things will really start to intensify."

The judge banged his gavel.

"Will the client, one Mr. Hei Xiong, please report to the witness stand, please?"

Jaune swallowed. 'Oh no, what have I just done. I just made things a lot worse, didn't I?'

Ozpin just gave Jaune a knowing look, as if to say; "Yes, son, yes you just did."

Author's Notes:

Second part of the court case next chapter!

Is Yang guilty here? Hmmmm...? Well, based on the Yellow trailer, she might just be (unless there's some sort of dramatic plot twist - as is the standard per Ace Attorney games). But, Yang really is not helping her own case here. Even if she was just acting in self-defense, that's still a lot of people injured, and a lot of money's worth of property damage done. Even if it could be proven that she wasn't the initial aggressor, that still would only mitigate her fines, if anything.

She isn't really thinking about the big picture here, though. And neither is Jaune, at least, not yet.
