Dobby's Friend

When he is freed by Harry Potter, Dobby becomes the house elf of the boy-who-lived. With permission and assistance from the grateful Hogwarts house elves, the determined Dobby takes steps to ensure his wizard is safe and able to recover from years of neglect by every adult in his life. And the adults have to pay the price for abuse and neglect.

CHAPTER 01: 22 June Elf Friend

On the night that he was freed by Harry Potter, Dobby Malfoy-Elf became Dobby Potter-Elf without telling anyone. When the great and powerful Mr Harry Potters left Lemon Whisker's office, Dobby carefully prodded, directed, and elevated the young wizard to the infirmary where the boy asked for a dreamless sleep potion. Dobby watched and became concerned when the matron, Madam Pomphrey, didn't properly scan the boy for injuries or provide the requested potion – she gave him a sleepy-time potion to help him get to sleep but it wouldn't keep away nightmares and allow for a deep, restorative sleep.

While Harry prepared for bed on his usual cot in the infirmary, the matron was called away to help a child who fell on the moving staircase. Once his wizard was alone, Dobby became visible.

"Hey, Dobby!" Harry said in greeting. "How are you feeling now?"

Struggling not to cry with joy that not just any wizard but Mr Harry Potters asked how he was feeling, Dobby reached out and hugged the boy's leg. He cried, "Dobby better than best because of Mr Harry Potters freed him from Most Evils Malfoys."

"You're my friend Dobby," Harry assured the elf when he knelt and returned the hug. "I think that's what friends do for each other."

This was the first hug that Harry ever remembered initiating and he liked the feeling of Dobby's small arms hugging back. The exchange of magic that occurred meant the elf could find the boy anywhere anytime, and Dobby found he got an incredible boost to his magic as well.

The wizard asked the elf, "Are you going to be okay?"

"Yes, Mr Harry Potters, Dobby will be fines. How about Mr Harry Potters? Will you be fines?"

"I'm going to try," Harry replied. While Harry finished changing his robes for his pyjamas, Dobby replaced the sleepy time potion with correct potion. Once Harry was asleep, Dobby did his own diagnosis of Harry Potter's physical and mental well-being. The elf frowned and created a parchment to show the other elves.

23 June Tools Who Talk and Walk

The morning after the scare with the disappearance and then miraculous rescue of the pureblood witch, Ginny Weasley, Severus Snape raged out loud the entire walk from his brewing room to the Great Hall. Once inside the large hall, his voice rang out, "Who stole all the potions? Who destroyed all the potion bottles and ingredients for brewing?"

The students remained motionless and silent as the angry wizard stalked around the Slytherin table to reach the head table.

"I know Potter did it! Only Prince Potter would destroy all my work!" raged Snape.

Professor Flitwick argued, "Madam Pomphrey, isn't Mr Potter a guest in your care this morning?"

"He is and he was there all night with a dreamless sleep potion. There were no sleepwalking or escapades by young Mr Potter last night," the matron stated firmly.

"Then who trashed the potions made for sale?" growled Snape once he was on the platform where the staff gathered to eat, pontificate and ignore true problems among the students. His eyes flashing with anger and avoiding Dumbledore's gaze, Severus shouted, "Wicked Jezebel! Wicked Jezebel come here!"

The head elf popped into the Great Hall, stood on the table where breakfast for the professors was spread around. The elf's left foot was on Dumbledore's plate and the cane it required for walking rested in the saucer of Dumbledore's teacup.

No one knew how old the head elf was or why she was named 'Wicked Jezebel' and the elves didn't offer additional information.

"Snarly Several yelled for Wicked Jezebel to interrupt breakfast time?" asked the elf innocently.

Flitwick gazed across the four tables – the seventh-year students who would graduate in just a few days, and most of the sixth-year students watched quietly as the newest drama unfolded at the head table. The Weasley twins watched as did Harry Potter. At the Ravenclaw table, one firstie watched though she kept glancing around the entire hall as the ghosts floated through the walls and other elves appeared to sit silently on the rafters and eavesdrop. Flitwick noticed that none of the youngest Slytherin students paid attention.

"Someone broke into my stores of potions last night! They destroyed a small fortune worth of potions, and my wards didn't register any person – any wizard or witch!" shouted Snape. "Which elf lost its mind and destroyed my potions?"

Blinking rapidly, the head elf asked, "Does Snarly Several say that elfses not be persons?"

"Of course, elves are not persons! Elves are creatures… tools who can talk and walk to serve wizards! Now, I order you to tell me which elf destroyed my work this year!"

The elf bowed her head and replied, "No Hogwarts elf did these things, Snarly Several. Miss Mean Kitty's Lions all be locked inside Gryff's Tower last night. Badgers hiding from terrible awful danger in halls, Ravens flying to top of tower and staying there."

The elf glanced toward the Slytherin table and whispered though everyone in the Great Hall heard her, "Wicked Jezebel not know about Snakes. They slippery and maybe got out of dungeon doors to raid the potions made by Snarky Several. They be afraid to go home without potions to get well after beatings by fathers."

Wicked Jezebel popped away and with her departure threw Dumbledore's plate into the headmaster's lap while her staff tipped over the headmaster's teacup, dumping the hot tea onto Minerva McGonagall.

Silence spread along the Slytherin table while the ghosts assembled in front of Professor Snape. The baron fussed, "Peeves might be responsible but none of us know for certain."

From the rafters, everyone heard the poltergeist yelled, "Peeves not steal but he does love fun potions!"

The magical creature fell from the ceiling, throwing potion bottles around the head table, hitting Hagrid with a potion that made him glow bright pink, McGonagall sprouted cat ears and a tail, and Snape appeared to absorb the potion without any affect. Peeve's vanished in a loud pop that left a glob of ectoplasm behind to fall on Snape, coating him from head to foot in the gelatinousness mess.

A moment later, the students saw the professor's hair turn green. Noticing the reaction of the students, Snape shook his hand to throw off the ectoplasm and conjured a mirror. When he saw his green hair, he cast finite, and saw his hair turn bright orange. The potions professor continued to cast the finite spell at his hair and his hair began to cycle through the colours of the rainbow before it turned into snakes that hissed at everyone in the hall.

Ron Weasley sneered and asked, "What are the snakes saying, Potter?"

"They keep shouting about potion ingredients being spoiled," replied Harry. He turned back to his breakfast and ignored everyone else at the table.

Listening to Severus rumble about lost potions, Dumbledore frowned. 'The sale of Snape's 'surplus potions' pay for my robes and vacations. I wonder if I can slip a few extra invoices into the Hogwarts accounts. Maybe the Potter accounts could fund my vacation this summer…I've not tried that in the past.'

23 June A Friend of Elves

That night, there were loud and raucous conversations in the kitchens. Elves seldom debate or argue but when they do the entire pod becomes involved and expresses their opinion.

In the dungeons, the Badgers believed they could hear arguments through the stone walls, and the Slytherins made certain to remain behind their secret door after a group of fifth- and sixth-year students came upon the battlefield near the kitchens. The elves had settled their differences with a food fight that left sticky honey and icing stuck to the walls, ceiling and floor; worse the sickly-sweet odours wafting through the dungeons of Hogwarts Castle.

Dobby Potter Elf emerged triumphant, and his wizard would be protected by all the elves at Hogwarts from the neglectful adults. To begin planning, Dobby worked with many of the older elves to explore the spell books hidden and stored in the Come-n-Go Room. They found multiple spells that would cause a wizard to explode, erupt in flames, turn to stone or blow away as dust. In one book, they found the most long-lasting spell called 'Magical Justice.'

Each of these spells required a prime number of elves to mimic wizard's magic: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29, 31, 37, and 41. The more difficult the spell, the more elves required. And for the most powerful spells, the elves who united and cast the wizard's spell would have to sleep for 13 or more days. If more than 41 elves slept for an almost two weeks, Dumbledore would notice a decline in service for the students and staff.

There was a list of names that Dobby compiled after examining his wizard and he made the argument that Magical Justice was the appropriate spell to use. Wicked Jezebel decided the elves might experiment with some of the other spells as well that summer if they seemed appropriate.

"Once the little wizards and witches goeses home, we's can cast the spell Whiskers not notice," Wicked Jezebel announced. "Until theys go home, we waits."

Without any dissention, the elves agreed to cast the spells to help Mr Harry Potter and his magic after the castle shut down for the summer.

24 June Anywhere but Surrey

With just one week until the students returned to their families for the summer break, Harry asked not to go back. He offered to work with the elves in the castle, but Dumbledore replied, "Your aunt and uncle love you. I'm certain they would miss you if you didn't come home for the summer. Besides, No.4 Privet Drive is the only safe place for you. If you stayed with anyone else, the family would die when Death Eaters attacked. No, you must stay with your aunt and uncle for the whole summer."

Walking back to the Gryffindor Tower, Harry sighed, "They don't love me. The Dursleys hate me. If they could get away with it, they'd kill me and congratulate themselves."

The invisible elf who shadowed Harry everywhere he went outside of the dorm and classrooms, listened carefully. He talked to Wicked Jezebel, and she huffed, "How could Dobby do anything? Harrys Potters lives with muggy-muggles and elves can'ts find them."

The little house elf smiled and explained, "Dobby knows where his Harry Potters bad relatives live in mugglesland. Dobby be there many times last summer."

The head elf consulted with the other elders and said, "Dobbys must not do something that leads wizards back to elves at Hoggiewarts. No magics or poisons."

"Dobby agrees – no poisons for Dirty-Dursleys, and no magics that can be traced back to elves."
