Chapter 1: Who Was That?

After Arnold's date with his said to be 'Pen Pal' Cecile, he returned to the boarding house with one of her red heels.

Standing outside on his front stoop, he thought to himself, "Who could that have been? How did she even know about Cecile?"

Once the confused boy decided to make his way inside, he saw his grandfather sitting in the kitchen. "Hey grandpa."

"Hey there shortman! That was a quick date!" Phil said, after having just told the real Cecile moments ago where Arnold was.

Arnold joined Phil at the table to tell his grandfather "Actually, the date started a while ago, but it wasn't with Cecile."

Phil gave his grandson a complex look as he asked "Who the heck was it with then? More importantly, was your little pen pal jealous?"

The desolate boy sat tapping his fingers against the table, becoming frustrated with the idea of not knowing who the girl could have been. It was bad enough Ruth turned out to be nothing like he had imagined. Then he found a girl who seemed to be nice enough to get to know, but wouldn't tell him who he was?

"Gerald covered for me, when she showed up. He took my pen pal out, while I stood there trying to convince the girl I ate dinner with to tell me who she was."

Before Arnold could continue, Phil butted in to say "Ooohhh what'd ya say? I can't imagine life without you! If you leave me I'll be devastated! I've never seen a better looking girl! Hehe."

Phil went on, getting a kick out of his thoughts until Arnold stopped him to say "I told her it was the best Valentine's Day I'd ever had, then watched her leave."

Phil lifted an eyebrow at what he considered to be his effortless grandson and replied "That's it?! No wonder you came home so early."

Arnold watched his grandfather leave the table, as he pulled out the red heel he brought home with him.

Sighing at the idea of not knowing who it belonged to, he decided it may be time to go upstairs and forget about it. That was too much to ask however.

After changing into his pajamas, he sat on the bed with the show, thinking to himself…

The only way they could have known who I was, was if they had met me before.

The boy then noticed his yearbook on his bookshelf, which he hadn't taken out since he and Gerald were comparing handwriting to the poems in the pink book they found.

Arnold began taking a closer look at the handwriting, as he compared it to his pen pal's handwriting.

Well, it definitely wasn't her

Still not feeling like going to sleep, he thought to himself…

Maybe that girl was the same one who wrote those love poems about me?

Moments later, he was once again comparing the handwriting, only this time it was between the yearbook, and the little pink book.

The only girls I've met in our school with blonde hair are Helga, Nadine, and Connie from the sixth grade.

Nadine's handwriting doesn't look anything like this, but I thought Connie liked Gerald?
