He was checking his eye. I think it was his first time seeing it clearly in a mirror.
"...FUCKING DAMN IT" ...yeah, I'm starting to hate being right.
Preping myself for this in my head, I open the door, expecting pretty much what I got.
"Get the Fuck Outta Here!!" Kenny shouted out, not looking away from his eye. "It's me." He was in a bad place, like Christa and...
Lily.
"Clem? I'm sorry, just.. gosh give me a sec." He just kept looking at it. Jesus, what made Carver such a..."Close the door."
As I got in the Kenny rant started, this one I couldn't help but understand both sides of. "Can you believe them, Clem? I bring them a working truck, and they act like I took a shit in their cereal." Kenny..
"I expected the stick up the ass from Jane, but I expected Mike to have more sense!"
"Kenny stop a second! They are scared of you, of what you did to Carver and Arvo. They.."how do I explain. "I had to do what I did to Carver, you know that. And that shitbird back there deserves the same treatment for getting Luke and Bonnie killed." Those eyes he was giving, I know I'm safe from him hurting me on purpose, but that look.
"I'm not saying you're wrong. Carver deserved worse and it's hard not to blame Arvo for Luke and Bonnie but Kenny listen to me. To Mike and Jane they see another kid who is getting beat by someone who just had another loss so it's hard to tell if he's on the verge of cracking and doing that to the rest of us!"
"I would never! The russian scum is a prisoner, one who tried robbing us! Hell if I'm going to play nice with someone like that. And I would never hurt any of you! I'm just..." As he took a couple breaths, I could only hope I was getting through to him.
"Think of AJ Clem, we've got maybe a day's worth of food for him. That's it." I thought we found suppli.. oh right baby formula only.
Damn it.
"Think about Rebecca and Alvin. What if Lee hadn't gone blazing through half of Georgia to find you?" He wanted to compare this? "This is different Kenny."
"How?" "Where are we going find formula out there? Kenny we can't go off without a plan." He still agreed to give Rebecca some time, he has to know we need to be smart about this. "I know Clem, but being on the road is better than sitting around here waiting for grass to grow, right?" With a big sigh Kenny leaned on the car window. Started looking at his reflection I think.
"I wish Lee was here." ...Me too, Kenny, me too. "What'd you think he'd say right now?"
With my own sigh, I sat back in my seat.
"Kenny, do you remember that day at the farm? We were all locked in that meat locker and when Larry fell down, Lee had to face an impossible choice, to chose between someone else's family and happiness or his and everyone's safety. He made a big risk. One he tried explaining a couple of times but I never understood until I held AJ after just losing Sarah." When I look at Kenny I can see him listening so closely to what I'm saying, as if what I say makes it all make sense.
"We need hope Kenny, hope that we can sit down a table and not have another empty seat every week. Hope that one day the next man who has a heart attack does get up. Hope that the people we love won't die,
hope that we live."
As we both started crying, thinking about everyone that's died along the way. I realized I should answer his question.
"I think Lee would say try to keep the group together, we're a team afterall." Kenny gave his best kinda smile, and asked if I had any other wise words under "that cap of yours".
"He'd also say to keep my hair short."
A.N. And thats a wrap. Was thinking about this scene and while the game tried hard to paint Kenny as Carver, I do see him in more a Lilly situation where its just loss thats getting a person. Lilly went flying off too, but her job was supplies and rationing so that sent her over the edge. Kenny has been through more than that, is still better then that in my eyes cause he's still got attachments (Clem and AJ) and his reasons are that of protection.
Even in the meat locker I picked to help Lilly because I couldn't help but think my thoughts above, but if you had to play devils advocate its not hard. Larry was retired to only behind wall work, and we have no idea if he still had any of his pills or if he was running a higher risk everyday.
Haunts me as the player and as Lee to have tried and before we know either way his brains are gone but if it had gone bad we didn't have him restrained at all and he is a 6'3" mountain, so I can't argue against Kenny doing what he did back then, and I do think a good portion of Kenny hate comes from that, cause I think all of us tried too and try blaming Lilly cracking on that.
It's not, stress gets to you in the apocalypse, either you go at alone and become a proper Molly, you take what family you can trust and try again and again or you break. Molly and pre-S2 Jane are the first, Kenny Clem and Lee, Lilly and End of S2 Kenny.
How you treat each group should be different, ultimately upto the situation, and know that when someone is trying to change from one type to the other, that's when most of everyone is gonna break and you just gotta watch the splash.
Anyhoot tell me your thoughts, any character ooc's, I tried to keep it together but it might be just a bit too much for a 10 year old, granted this is Clem but still. Thank you, it is 4:30am and I regret NoThInG!
