Sometime Later

Inside: Jackie's and Marco's Apartment

Jackie, Marco, Brittney, Mr. Candle, and Justin eat breakfast at the round kitchen table. The odd sound of munching punctuates the heavy silence.

Brittney breaks the silence as she looks at Marco, who is barely eating his breakfast, "She's gonna come back." She's talking about Star. Mr. Candle silently sighs skeptically. Brittney continues a little awkwardly, "Except, you know, last time she was gone for, like, two years."

Marco lifts his head up, "Well, it's only been two days, so..." He trails off, giving Brittney a look, who nods understandably.

Mr. Candle asks Marco, "Did she say anything before they left?"

Marco looks at Mr. Candle, "Yeah, she had to figure some stuff out with her mother. She and Tom kinda committed treason..." He looks down as he realizes she may not come back, "On our way out." It goes quiet again. Marco takes a bite of his scrambled eggs, and Jackie returns to her cereal.

Mr. Candle looks down, "Oh."

Brittney speaks up again, "Well, what about Tom?" They all look at her, "Did he say anything before he left?"

Jackie speaks up this time, "Only that, even though he's far away, he'll always be here for us. Even if we can't see him, he can see us." Everyone nods, thinking about that.

Brittney nods and speaks up, "A bit creepy when you think about it." Everyone chuckles at the honest joke.

Mewni: Throne Room

Star and Tom kneel at the foot of the throne, where Moon is standing in front of them. The damage is gone and has been repaired.

Moon states to Star, "You once said there would never be a wiser Queen than me. You were wrong. The alignment has brought all the realms together. Every one of them saw you offer your life to save them. What can Mewni offer its new Queen in return?"

Star answers, "My life." Tom looks at Star in shock and disbelief as she stands to her feet, "Mother, I cannot be Queen of Mewni. I will protect Mewni and all the realms with my last and every breath, but I cannot do so from that chair. Janna, for all her grave imbalance, understood rule as I know I never will."

Star glances down at Tom, who looks away with a sad look. Star looks back at Moon, "The brutality, the sacrifice... It changes you. I'd rather be a good woman than a great Queen."

Moon questions Star, "Is this my daughter, I hear, or the man she loves?"

Star gently questions back, "When you speak, do I never hear Father's voice?" Moon sighs and casts her eyes downwards at the mention of River. Star continues her plea, "This is not for Marco, Mother. He does not know what I came here to say." Moon sits down on the throne behind her, "Now forbid me to see him or say he can rule at my side. It changes nothing."

Moon states truthfully, "One daughter who wanted the Throne too much, another who will not take it. Is this my legacy?"

Star tells Moon, Tom just silently listens as he kneels to the queen, "Janna died with honor. I shall try to live the same. Is that not legacy enough?" Moon nods, then Star looks down at her wand and offers it back to Moon.

Moon waves it off, "It belongs to you." She quickly adds, "If you are worthy of it."

Star promises, "I shall try to be."

Moon shakes her head, "I cannot give you my blessing, nor can I wish you good fortune."

Star nods understandably, "I know." Star turns around and leaves.

Moon stops Star by saying, "If I were proud of the woman my daughter had become, even that, I could not say." Star slowly turns around to Moon, "It would speak only from my heart." She smiles a bit and nods towards the exit, "Go, my daughter."

Star nods and smiles a bit, "Thank you, mother." Star turns to leave again, but Tom stops her.

Tom says, "I'd like to join her, your majesty?"

Star looks back at Tom in disbelief, "What?"

Tom doesn't answer Star but explains himself to the queen, "What I'm trying to say is that I'd like a fresh start, your highness, in creating a new adventure for myself."

Moon questions, "A fresh start, Tom Lucitor?"

Tom nods and takes a deep breath, "Yes." He stands up, "A fresh start to do something different with my life, to explore more of what the universe has to offer."

Moon asks Tom knowingly, "Starting with Earth?" Tom nods, "What's become of this?"

Tom looks down sadly, "Janna." Moon blinks in surprise, but knowingly, Tom looks up as he admits, "With Janna gone, I don't know how to be here." Moon tilts her head questionably, "I have changed since I've returned from Earth. I can see that I can learn and do more out there than here." Star smiles a bit as she looks and hears Tom from behind her. She's very proud of the man he has become, "Mewni will always be my home. I just need some time and space from it for a while."

Moon questions Tom, "What of your sister?"

Tom answers, "My sister, Hekapoo, will understand my decision once she knows my reason."

Moon asks Tom, "And that is?"

Tom takes a second before answering, "Freedom."

Moon sighs silently, thinking before telling Tom, "I give you permission to leave, as you are always welcome here."

Tom inhales, surprised, "Thank you, your majesty." He bows respectfully with his right arm across his chest before turning around and leaving with Star by his side.

Moon watches Tom and Star depart from the room, then transforms to reveal it was Janna, alive and well, on the throne all along. Janna smiles devilishly, saying low, "No, thank you."
