Renamon remained awake. She didn't want to sleep. She initially tried but was quick to rise unable to shut her eyes.
She left the Makino home decided to have a nightly stroll of the city just beyond her home.
From rooftop to rooftop or dashing through the shadows Renamon was quite swift.
Out of curiosity she decided to explores the streets of her friends.
First there was Impmon who slept peacefully near his two tamers.
Then she saw Hirokazu's home. Though his window she could see that apparently he was up at a rather irresponsible hour playing a video game of sorts while Guardromon protested about him needing to sleep.
Then came the Lee residence. What what intended as a short look would turn into something else when she noticed Jenrya out stretching and taking deep breaths.
She stood atop his roof believing herself to be undetected. She wasn't.
"Huh. Is that Renamon? Hey up there! What's up?"
It was then Renamon understood that her location had been left partially exposed by the shining of the moon's rays on the very spot she stood.
'Am I losing my touch?'
Sighing she hopped down and gave him a reply.
"Good evening Lee-san."
"Just Jian or Jenrya is cool. So what are you doing up at this hour?"
Jenrya smiled eager to meet the presence of a friend. The man's smile was infections it was and brought a certain warmth to Renamon to see.
"I do this often, Jenrya. I have a long stroll throughout the city. Observing it helps me better understand the daily lives of humans. It also helps me stay fit. So tell me, Jenrya. What are you doing up right now?"
Saying his name plain and without suffixes for the first time was a strange new feeling for Renamon. Jenrya shrugged and sighed. He was evidentially tired but still chose to remain awake.
"Oh yeah I remember you saying that before. I really needed some fresh air. Study, study...ugh! I couldn't stay cooped up in my room for any longer and can't sleep. I was actually about to go out for a walk if you wanna join and chat for a bit. Oh, unless you want to come inside."
With a tiny smile Renamon gave a swift reply.
"A walk sounds lovely."
"Oh? Great!"
Their conversation started simple. He asked her how things were in her home with her later retuning the question. He returned to talking about the stress of his studies but notably would take extra care in trying not sound like he was just ranting or using her as a vent outlet. This even included an apology. She however was perfectly fine with this role and encouraged him to say what he felt.
"Its fine, vent if you need to vent. We are friends as you said before and if it helps you any I don't mind at all."
While she spoke they were coming onto the entrance of an all too familiar park. "You sure?" "Positive." "Oh, well, thanks. Really. It's just...well. These tests will be the last ones I need in order to move up. Having to pass is hard enough but combine that with pressure from my family and having to figure out my future and its enough to make a person break. My family loves me and I love them. Even so Japanese parents tend to be really strict and pressure-heavy with this sort of thing. Chinese ones are even worse and my family is both. Then if I even manage this much there is everything going on in from school to college. My family already has something planned for me. They won't say what no matter how many times I ask. There's also the fact that I was planning to move out when all this is said in done, but I have so much on my mind and so many things I have to do right now I feel like I'll be lucky to even reach that point. I feel like I have the weight of the entire world on me and, well, not to sound like a jerk or anything but use having the actual weight of two worlds on us back then is something I am starting to miss."
Jenrya's situation was not very different than Ruki's but to Renamon he seemed arguably even worse.
It was definitely worse and it was getting to his head. It worried his digital accomplice.
Jenrya was a good friend too them all and always there for support, but now more than ever he was the one that really needed it the most.
While the two had continued their walk through the park they noticed a nearby bench where they took a moment to rest. She sat beside him thinking of all he'd told her. He looked back at her and gave her another soothing smile typical of his face. He still looked uneasy from his situation, but seemed somewhat happier.
"Renamon."
"Yes?"
"Thank you. I'm still kinda tense but it really helps to chat like this and get it all of your chest. Well, I would say its all gone but I still have to do all of that. Still, having a friend's shoulder to lean on helps more than you know."
Renamon planned her next few words carefully, more so than usual, before finally addressing all that he had said.
"I know quite well. You are always there for the rest of us. I figured this was the least I could do. You always were a kind boy back then always there for everyone when you could be. Now you are a man but that much about you remains the same. It really is admirable. I'm glad I could give back some support in return. I hope your mental state continues to improve."
Jenrya felt different from before, he felt much more relaxed. Here he had been losing his mind prior and now he had the warm voice of a friend to pull him out of the madness.
More so it had been someone giving him words as warm as those once again and he had peculiar warmness within his chest. It was strange but very enjoyable.
This park he was in truly was something special. For them both it was full of so many memories and the two just created another that would keep the man going as he marched toward that destination he dreaded so greatly.
"More than you know..."
There was a moment of silence between them that followed. She looked at him while he sat there. Even with the lack of verbal communication during this time she could see the man with a mind heavy on worry feel a moment of peace. In her heart she felt like she'd accomplished something incredible. It was a great victory fought not with her fist, but her words she used to rescue a friend.
In truth she was sadly unable to fully slay the man's greatest enemy, all of those concerns within himself. Those negative feelings would return and she knew that. Yet she still felt very satisfied with what she'd done for him .
He surprised her when placing his hand on her shoulder.
"I owe you one, Renamon. You were right. We don't have as much in common as some of the others, but our conversations are pretty nice, not to mention helpful."
His infections smile got to her faster than anyone could have predicted.
"You owe me nothing. I merely aided a friend in need. You are a good man and you can conquer this."
Jenrya giggled.
"No really, I feel like I owe you for this. I told you before if you ever needed something to talk about and didn't know who or how I'll be here. You listened to all my ranting and raving and stress so the least I can do is return the favour."
The man's proposition struck her curiosity. She did have a rough subject she'd eventually have to face lest she have any hope of sleeping properly again.
She turned away. He was not quite sure how to read her but his gut told him something unpleasant was happening within her mental universe.
In her mind she asked herself what business does he have in any of her personal affairs?
Another voice was quick to respond and make sense of things.
He deserved to know at least part of her struggles because he was a friend and because he spilled out everything that worried him to her. Then came another consideration in Renamon's mind, how difficult discussing this was to Ruki or her family. Perhaps having someone outside of them to talk to first was ideal.
She could not fully commit to saying everything to him just yet, but would take the first few steps. He turned to look and listen as best she could while she would speak of her ails.
"Let us just say I have struggled recently. It regards my past, or rather, my inability to talk about it. I don't feel strong enough to speak of it right now but let us say it was far from pleasant. I grew up in a place that was rough, even for the Digital World."
"Oh wow. I didn't know, but I am willing to listen."
"Of course you are, Jenrya. You are a good man, but now is not really the time. I think I finally feel myself growing tired enough to surely sleep after making the trip home."
Renamon lifted herself to stretch. Jenrya stood up as well and the two made way to leave.
"Jenrya-san."
"Hmm?"
Taking a deep breath Renamon spoke clarifying a few things that were on both their minds.
"Perhaps you are the ideal friend to speak to. In time I shall. Though the situation today as it relates to my past is not easy to say to anyone. I don't have the energy to now, but I am happy knowing someone is around that I can talk to. It's I wish to bring up with back home, even Ruki, in truth, I really appreciate that. So thank you."
"Of course!" Replied Jenrya. Renamon smiled again.
"Before we part ways I must say how much I regret not spending more time with you like this in the past. You are most enjoyable to converse with."
"Oh, yeah. You too, Renamon. I can't say enough how great it was to just get all of that out. Honestly it's left me pretty relaxed. See you soon okay?"
"Most definitely."
With her last words Renamon vanished. Jenrya walked home blissfully unaware of him being watched.
She was not about to leave before making sure he returned safely. When the last leg of of his journey back home appeared secure she turned to return to her own residence.
As expected Renamon moved in her house undetected and with everyone else still sound asleep.
With the trip she had made she'd partially accomplished her goal of becoming tired enough to want to sleep but her stomach plagued her when she moved into the hallway toward her room.
She intended to ignore this but the sound continued and it bothered her more than the pain of unexpected hunger itself. Sighing she returned to the kitchen to grab a small meal. The aigitating growls of her tummy would not have anything else. Her meal goal was simple but finding what she wanted when it was scare proved a bit of a challenge.
"We can't be it out already can we..?"
While fiddling around with the things she found in their refrigerator she stopped to notice the hidden bag. Giving into her curiosity she took a look inside of it to find the the wrapped chocolates Ruki mentioned before. She had no intention of eating it, especially at this hour, but it did interest her to remember it. It would likely sit here without a purpose unless Ruki decided to give it Takato. Who else would she give it to? Rumiko would refuse it being a model and did Seiko even like chocolate?
Thoughts of a friend mere moments ago entered her head and while she didn't understand why it gave Renamon an idea. Unlike Ruki she didn't have a person of interest for romantic pursuits, she had neither the time nor interest in such, but she did have a good friend who she knew would appreciate it. A sheet of paper, a pen, and the bag would accompany her to her room.
Several hours passed and Makino family would all rise bright and early on a chilly day. All but two. Ruki would rise after Rumiko and Seiko complaining. She would loudly complain asking why she had to be up so early on a weekend. Rumiko would lightly scold her for not wanting to spend more time with before her next leave.
Renamon would take an exceptionally long time to rise having been incredibly drained from the night prior. Even after she finally emerged from her room she seemed particularly more fatigued than usual.
Rumiko grinned and gave her a pat on the back.
"Sleep late did ya?"
"Yes sadly Rum...er..mother..."
It seems that Ruki was not the only one to be forced awake sooner than she would have asked.
Back at the Lee residence Jenrya would be shifted awake sooner than he had hoped when a package was thrown at him.
"Uhhh, um, wha...?"
"Jen, Wake up sleepy head! You got mail! Also breakfast is ready."
While Jenrya wiped his eyes and tried to regain sight Shaochung bounced away with Terriermon behind her eager for food. When he could see once again Jenrya looked down at a strange white large mailing envelope. It was weird. No stamps, no writing and no legal information.
Just simple words on the front "To Jianliang Lee."
He found a little note within. The handwriting on the front was not bad so to speak, but did look like it was written by someone who did not write often.
The note read:
"Happy Late White Day. I hope this soothes you."
With the note he found two wrapped pieces of fine chocolate.
"Wait wait wait, what? I have a secret admirer or something?"
A single bite of one and his mind did feel lighter. It had a delightful flavour. Though he couldn't imagine who had sent it. The odd handwriting was the only indicator he had, until he looked further. He'd found a single strand of something. Hair? Fur? Either way he could see a yellow tint to it. Though he would get few bites of his new confections before his family once again beckoned him from below to come and in.
"Hurry up, your food will get cold!"
Rolling his eyes he did some stretching and left to the kitchen.
He didn't understand who or why he was given that gift but he didn't complain. It was the start of a good day.
