A boy came down the hallway, yawning and quickly stretched out his arms and shoulders before leaning against the doorway.
"What's an A-D-L?" Midoriya asked Todoroki. Shoto shrugged. They turned to Bakugo, who looked at the board in confusion before he asked the only other person there.
"Oi." Katsuki demanded.
The other boy looked. "What?"
"You Ritsu?" Bakugo eyed.
The boy sighed. "I'm tired." He twisted his spine and pulled his arms across his body as he reluctantly answered. "And ADL is just an acronym for Activities of Daily Living. It covers your daily stuff like brushing your teeth and taking a shower and whatnot."
"Oh." Todoroki responded.
Eventually a therapist came in, unlocking the door that the boys all waited outside of. She introduced herself as Miri. What Natsu came in and sat down, Katsuki widened his eyes in annoyance and shook his head to get Natsu's voice out of his brain, which made Izuku laugh. Shoto went first at morning meeting and said that his goal for the day was to talk to a doctor and try to come up with a transition plan to ensure that going back to campus would be beneficial for not just himself, but for his classmates, too.
Bakugo's goal was so simple, it was almost not accepted: to take a nap. Miri didn't allow the other boys to make assumptions or suggest he get a "better" goal. Katsuki had nightmares enough that trying to take a nap was a quest enough.
Of course, Midoriya just wanted to call his mother. He knew she'd be worried sick about him if she knew everything that was going on and that was another thing that he had to figure out… DID she know everything?
They broke apart after doing a worksheet on coping skills and Shoto and Izuku walked the halls for an hour. The poster on the glass of the nurse's station estimated that 15 laps was a full kilometer and so they walked about 30 laps, alternating direction every 10 laps before lunch was served.
"Luuuuuuuunchhh, luuuuuuuuuunchhhhh, come get a bunchhhh, of beverages to drink and things that you muuuuunchhhhh!" Came the call of Sato, their nurse, who receives the tray cart three times a shift.
The walking partners went to rouse Bakugo. They ate lunch, which was soba noodles, packed in paper bowls with plastic lids. Shoto Todoroki was very happy.
By the time that evening rolled around, the dinner cart had come and gone with the call of "dinnerrrrrr, dinnerrrrrrrrrrrrrr, without it you'd be thinnerrrrrrr! So come and get it while it's yummy and eat it up or you're a dummy!" Sato laughed.
Now it was 7pm- an hour before Sato would get to clock out of his 3-day a week, 12 hour shifts. He watched Midoriya get more and more anxious.
"Vitals Time!" Sato said, cheerily popping around the corner with a cart- a different kind this time- a rolling computer, really. He took Izuku's temperature and blood pressure before asking what was wrong. Midoriya answered: He was all nerves for his phone call with his mom.
When the time came for "phone hour", Izuku sat in the hallway with a pre-dialed phone in his hand. He was told that he could not take the cordless phone anywhere other than directly outside his room. Apparently, Bakugo decided to call home too, because he sat in the hallway, on his still-sore butt, a few yards away.
The phone rang. Midoriya clutched it harder. "Midoriya Residence." Inko answered. Izuku gently sniffled.
"Mom?..."
"Hello, Izuku." Inko said, with genuine kindness and worry. She forgot she was supposed to be angry. Midoriya opened his mouth to speak but was distracted momentarily from his call by Katsuki's own conversation.
"WHATDOYOU WANT, YOU WRETCHED OLD HAG?!" Bakugo boomed.
Silence.
He continued. "SO YOU CALLED THE hOsPiTaL?!"
Izuku tried not to laugh. Inko sighed. "I hear your friend, Katsuki is there."
Midoriya nodded. "Mm." He thought for a second. She was being pretty nice. "Um, mama. You didn't hear anything about me, recently did you?" He asked.
Inko was silent. "You got what you deserved, Izuku. I'm just glad your teacher delivered it and not me."
Midoriya was silent this time. "I didn't like trauma rehab, mom." He squeaked.
"You're not supposed to like it. You're supposed to get better. Now- shape up and come back safe and sound, okay?" Inko requested.
Izuku nodded. "Okay mom. I love you."
"I love you, too." Midoriya replied, gently hanging up with the red plastic button. He found the phone to be damp and felt his face- he was crying. He looked over to see Miri, the therapist, lecturing Katsuki on phone manners and came over to talk with Izuku and request that he give the phone to Shoto so he could have a chance to talk to his siblings.
"Yeah, I'm back." Bakugo sighed. There was silence and then Katsuki gave a few "ok's" and "Yes ma'am's and yes sir's" before finally he hung up.
Todoroki called and his sister, Fuyumi, picked up. Natsuo was in the background. "Dad wants a brief talk with you!" She said, happily.
"No, thank you." Shoto denied.
Todoroki could hear his father in the background and then him muttering that the phone was too small. "Shotooooooo! My Boy!" He said, finally.
"Hi, Dad." Todoroki sighed.
"How is the criminal life treating you?! Hahahah! That is a JOKE, my boy! But I am VERY angry with you. Why have been dodging my calls, Shoto?!"
"Can you put Fuyumi on the phone?" He asked again, nicely… too nicely. Because Enji did not give the phone back.
"Son. Listen to your father- All of Japan sees ME as its number one. One day it shall be you and—"
Finally, realizing the situation was going nowhere good, Natsuo took the phone. "Ayyyy lil bro! Heard you ran away and got shoved into the hospital. How's the food? Too hot? Too Cold? Well it shouldn't matter for YOU!"
Shoto laughed. "It's pretty awful." He admitted. "But nah, I have a quirk erasure band on. Two, actually." He sighed. "Hey, I want OUT." Todoroki said, seriously, changing the subject. "Can you get Dad to sign an A.M.A.?"
"OOOOOh, no can do, lil bro." Natsuo sighed. "In fact, lemme pass you to Fuyumi. Dad's over on the couch sulking."
Midoriya and Bakugo were walking laps around the hospital floor, when they passed Shoto. "No- you know what, Fuyumi?! Never mind. Dad's doing what he does best: MAKING PRISONERS." He pulled the phone away and slammed the hang-up button.
His friends went to go comfort him, but Sato stopped them. "Stop right there!" He shouted. "You can't go into each other's rooms." He sighed, a coat over his arm. "I'm headed out for the night. The night nurse, Akito, is coming in to give you all your pills. PLEASE be good. Okay?"
"But Shoto—" Izuku began.
"Let him cry it out." Sato said. "Goodnight."
The other boys sighed. "Goodnight."
