Chapter 2: Jacob

Nessie

"So Jacob, when did you move here?" I was finding it increasingly difficult to take my eyes off of Jacob.

"We just got here yesterday," he answered. Well that explained why I had never seen him before. "We finished unpacking everything last night. That's why I decided to come and explore the city,"

"Where is the rest of your family?"

"They're at home right now. It's a little too sunny for them today,"

"Yeah it's normally not this bright out. It's usually a lot more cloudy and it rains a lot here. Oh great. I'm talking about the weather. I'm sorry I must be boring you," I wanted to slap myself.

Jacob had a very intense stare as he turned to look at me. "On the contrary I actually find you quite interesting,"

I laughed. "You must not have met very many interesting people then,"

Jacob didn't say anything. "Anyway I am starting to get really hungry for lunch. What do you like to eat?"

He shrugged. "I'm a simple guy. I'll eat pretty much anything. So you pick,"

"Well I know this really good place that sells good cheeseburgers and hotdogs. The milkshakes are very good also,"

"That all sounds good to me,"

I'd walked the route to the diner a thousand times before. It shouldn't be such a nerve wrecking walk to make. Of course my only companionship to the diner before now had been Ellie. My dog loved cheeseburgers as much as I did. Of course right now my companionship was not just a German Shepherd. It was a man. No, from what I had learned of him he was a boy my age. But the word boy didn't seem like a very apt description for him. He was a very very very handsome guy that my body seemed to have a very physical reaction to.

We were seated as soon as we got to the diner. I immediately grabbed the menu and pretended to look at it though I already knew what I wanted. "Do I make you nervous?" Jacob surprised me by asking.

"Is it that obvious?"

"Yeah, it kind of is," he said. "Don't be nervous. I won't bite, I promise. Look, even Ellie likes me,"

Ellie had placed her head in Jacob's lap. He scratched her behind the ears and she wagged her tail. "And that is very unusual. As I said earlier she doesn't normally take to other humans so quickly. She loves to play with other dogs though. Especially the guys. She loves being around male dogs. I think she finds them all attractive. You should see how close she is to my other dog,"

"You have two dogs?" Jacob asked.

"Technically. Bailey is more my brother's dog though. He's a German Shepherd like Ellie. We got him a few months after I got Ellie and I swear she's been in love with him since the first day we had him home," I laughed.

"You really love dogs, don't you? How do you feel about wolves?"

My eyes lit up. "Pardon my language but wolves are fucking awesome. I love wolves. Besides without wolves we wouldn't have dogs,"

"Okay. I have another very super important question for you. Werewolves or vampires?"

I giggled. "Werewolves for sure. Vampires are evil sadistic creatures that kill innocent humans in all of the stories. Werewolves are the good guys. They protect the humans. Fantasy is one of my favorite genres to read,"

"Now I wouldn't say all vampires are evil,"

"Are you kidding me? They're monsters. They're pure evil. For god sakes they drink human blood. That's about as evil as you can get,"

Maybe it was just my imagination but Jacob seemed visibly uncomfortable. It was strange that my feelings toward mythical creatures would bother him in the slightest. But I decided to shrug it off.

The waitress came and took our orders. She smiled and winked at Jacob which bothered me….a lot. Jacob didn't seem to pay her any mind though. "So tell me more about yourself Nessie,"

"There isn't much to tell really," I shrugged. I drank a sip of water.

"Tell me more about your family,"

I was surprised by the interest he had in my mundane life. "Well I was adopted. My parents are both doctors. My brother is their biological son but he's the same age as me so we practically grew up together. Mike is kind of my polar opposite. He's a star football player and he's popular. He gets the attention of pretty much every girl at school. Me on the other hand? Well I'm just me. I have a small group of friends. I couldn't play sports to save my life. Hell I've landed myself in the hospital quite a few times with nothing more than my own two feet. I prefer non active activities like reading, writing, TV, movies, video games. Stuff like that. Why don't you tell me more about yourself Jacob?"

"I like to work on cars. I'm a pretty good mechanic if I do say so myself. I prefer to spend time in the garage tinkering with stuff,"

"Oh that's nice. Are you working on any cars at the moment?"

"No. I'm hoping to start on a new project again soon though,"

The waitress approached us with our food. "Here you go," again she smiled at Jacob.

I tore up one of the cheeseburgers for Ellie. "Come here Ellie," she hadn't left Jacob's side yet. She trotted over to me when she saw the food in my hand. "I swear this girl is like a bottomless pit lately. Well, she's always loved food but lately she's hungry all the damn time,"

"It might be her condition. I mean, maybe she has a condition that is making her more hungry. Maybe you should get her checked out by a veterinarian,"

I shrugged. "I'm sure it'll pass," I lamented. "Anyway, do you have any plans for the rest of the day?" I asked him.

"No. I'm just going to go home and tell my family about this wonderful time I had with you,"

I blushed. "We should probably go pay already,"

Jacob and I got up at the same time. I tripped, bumped into Jacob, and fell again and dropped my stuff all over the place. I quickly started grabbing all of my stuff. I noticed out of the corner of my eye that Jacob was quickly picking up stuff that he had dropped as well when I bumped into him. "I'm so sorry Jacob," I said as I continued to haphazardly gather all of the stuff that had fallen out of my purse.

"Don't worry about it. You weren't kidding about the clumsiness though," he grabbed my hand and helped me stand up.

"Yeah it's bad," I blushed again from embarrassment. We went up front to pay. Once we were outside of the diner Jacob turned to me and said "I can't wait to see you again,"

"Yeah," was all I could muster to say.

We parted ways right then and there. I was sure that I would see Jacob again at school. It turned out that he and his siblings had enrolled at the school that my brother and I attended. I also knew that it meant he would attract girls that were a lot more gorgeous than I was. A guy like Jacob was way out of my league.

The house was empty when we got there. "Oh well Ellie it looks like it's just you and I for now. Do you want to watch TV?" she barked in response as if she understood me. "Okay, okay,"

An unfamiliar ringtone rang from my purse. That was weird. I looked through my purse for my phone and couldn't find it anywhere. I was surprised when instead of finding my Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra I pulled out an iPhone 15. Shit. Jacob and I must have switched phones by accident when we were picking up the stuff that we had dropped. Damn. The phone started ringing again and the name that came across the phone was Bella. I let it go to voicemail. Shit. How was I going to get my phone back?

The phone rang again and the name Bella flashed across the screen once again. Instead of sending it to voicemail like I had intended, I accidentally answered it. "Jacob, where are you? It's been a few hours since you left and I was starting to get worried. Are there any dan-"

"I'm not Jacob," I answered her.

There was a pause. "Who are you and why do you have Jacob's phone?" her voice sounded very menacing and that scared me.

"We must have accidentally switched phones earlier and-"

"Who are you?" her voice once again laced with that menacing tone. It sounded like she was growling.

I gulped nervously. "My name is Renesmee. Jacob and I met earlier and had lunch together. We must have accidentally switched phones when we dropped our stuff on the floor earlier,"

Silence followed.
