He screamed as he fell, the world spinning as he threw himself from the hammock, slamming his snout on the rough ground. Pain shot through his face as he felt blood fill his mouth. I bit my tongue...
"Well duh, doofus" He felt her sigh, although it felt weird inside his own head.
"Roll up your tongue in your mouth, it'll help with the bleeding." Gingerly, he pinched his tongue gently with his teeth feeling where he had cut his mouth.
He let himself lay on the ground, his sweaty body splayed on the rough stones. Did you see…
"Yes," Mamba said, her voice flat and emotionless.
Want to elaborate or… he felt her hesitate, he didn't want to push her too far. But he needed to know what she knew, for better or for worse.
" Why would I tell you anything?" She growled suddenly.
Oh, Come on. Like it or not we need to trust each other. He whacked his forehead with the palm of his talon. Especially because we are stuck in the same freaking head.
"I didn't ask to be here," She said exasperated.
"And I didn't ask to wake up with my brain wiped of all my memories and another dragon in my head…
Mamba stayed quiet for a long time after that. He waited patiently, feeling the blood in his snout dry as he stared up at the ceiling. When she finally did reply her voice felt hollow and distant.
" Long story short, My sister suffered from a condition that prevented her and anyone around her from being happy. I'm not going to tell you any more than that. "
You mean how she couldn't stop laughing? He asked, trying to keep his tone low. He remembered how he felt like her, choking on her mirth as he was laughing. He had never felt so scared. Mamba's sharp undertone returned quickly.
"Maybe, maybe not. At the end of the day, my past is none of your business."
Then how come you get to see my past? He shot back frustrated. It's not fair that you know more about my life than I do. He grimaced, even to him he sounded childish.
"Because I, unlike you, CAN'T SAND STINKING MOVE," Mamba Shouted
"Obsidian?"
He shot to his feet glancing towards the doorway, Too fast, He thought. Blood rushed to his head and he collapsed again as Moonwatcher entered his room.
" Um, you ok?" she asked softly, walking towards him. It felt like someone had stuffed a hive of bees in his head. "I'm Fine," he forced the words out with gritted teeth. " Just stood up too fast." He heard Moon sigh as his head slowly returned to normal.
"I swear you're just like Winter, you can't push yourself so hard. Especially with your body still healing."
"Why does she care?" Mamba growled. "Nightwings don't care about other dragons unless they have something they want."
"Moon's not like that." He protested, finally getting to his feet.
"Like What?" Moon said, her ears drooping slightly. I said that out loud…
"Uh. Like other. Uh, You're not anything like other nightwings that's what I meant., I talk to myself a lot. " Moon's Ears dropped even further.
"Smooth brainless," He felt Mamba Roll her eyes.
Great, first day here and I'm already making friends. He thought sarcastically.
He sighed. "I'm sorry Moon, I didn't mean it like that" "The last Nightwings I met…" Pain stabbed through his head, and he staggered claws flying to his head.
He screamed, tears streaming from his eyes as they dived through the canyon. A blast of fire shot past them, "THERE CATCHING UP" Someone shouted. Something roared behind him. Glancing back he saw a Nightwing preparing another fireball, his neck glowing ominously. The wind battered against him trying to tear him off. Another blast, screaming. A jagged wall of rock loomed above him, they were going to crash…
He gasped, breathing heavily as he steadied himself against the nearby wall.
Moon gaped at him, her eyes wide. She knows.
"Don't tell anyone please," he forced out. Still trying to breathe. Moon nodded slowly, her talons dropping.``I-I'm sorry" She stammered, backing away towards the archway.
"Don't let her leave," Mamba hissed. He ignored her, letting Moon exit into the hallway and out of sight. He reached out to Mamba. Mamba? She ignored him. He growled softly. There was nothing he could do about Moon now. Either she would tell everyone or she wouldn't. At the end of the day, it's her decision to make. He thought back to the dream he had.
Were those memories? Visions? He couldn't tell. What's the point of visions if they only give me more questions? He turned ready to climb back into his hammock when a thought struck him. Vulture said he sent someone to check out where the survivor went… They didn't mean me, did they? It felt like someone poured freezing water down his spine. The cave walls slowly morphed into claws, the talons of Vulture closing slowly around him. He needed to get out. to feel the wind on his face and think. He rushed out of his room trying to remember Moon's tour. He winded past the archway after classroom, after chamber, tripping over more rocks than he could count. He passed by several sleeping rooms, He Even found a small lake in one of the deeper caverns. Why is this place so big? He thought frantically, sprinting down the oddly empty corridors. Finally, he turned left down another tunnel, and suddenly he was out. He quickly skidded to a halt, nearly toppling over and down into the forest below.
"Careful Smokesnorter". He jumped nearly falling off the edge again as he turned to see a familiar Icewing on the ridge beside him
"Winter," he gasped. "Don't scare me like that," Winter rolled his eyes.
"A stampede of Mudwings would have been more subtle than you were."
"Oh c'mon I'm not that loud" He protested. Right? Winter snorted dismissively, turning to face the bright sky above them.
He gasped as he looked up at the night sky. A whirlwind of stars stretched above the sky above them, Rich Purples and Deep Blues scattered throughout the sky with three Crescent moons towering over it all.
Winter glanced at him, cold eyebrows raised. "You've never seen the sky before?" he asked, his mouth twitching upward slightly.
His mouth opened and closed silently, trying to form words. "I-I never knew it was this… this-"
" Nice?" Winter said.
He nodded. "Yeah, I guess that's one way to put it." Winter shifted uneasily
"Sorry, I'm not great at describing things" someone gasped in the archway behind them.
"Do my ears decisive me" Kinkajou uncloaked from the dark archway, her scales flashing bright pink. " Winter….. DID YOU JUST APOLOGIZE"
"KINKAJOU IF YOU TELL ANYONE I SWEAR TO THE GREAT ICE WALL." Winter roared, leaping forward to try to tackle the exhilarated rainwing before she escaped. Kinkajou yelped, quickly cloaking as winter's talons passed through the open air. "I WILL PERSONALLY THROW YOU OFF THIS MOUNTAIN"
He made a mental note never to get on the Icewings bad side.
"I could take him, "Mamba commented, finally breaking her silence. Oh, now you decide to talk? He murmured back. Mamba ignored him, continuing to watch as Winter dove after the rapidly appearing and disappearing kinkajou.
"Oh don't worry Wintee" She teased only her head reappearing. "I won't tell anyone that you actually apologized to someone" she giggled as Winter glared at her, Dark blue veins bulged in his forehead.
"Kinkajou I swear-"
"Yeah yeah, Mr. Blueberry's face I got it" She interrupted. " You're royale reputation and all that." She glanced towards Obsidian, poking out her tongue. " See you later, Obsy," and just like that, she was gone.
Obsy? He didn't know how to react to that. Winter whirled on him, redirecting his piercing gaze onto him.
"You too Smokesnorter"
"You got to get a better Insult." He noted. Winter's glare somehow managed to dig even deeper into his scales. He raised his talons in surrender "Alright, Alright I get the picture." Winter huffed, grumpily turning back to the cliff edge.
"Stay or Go, I don't care either way." For some reason, he knew he was lying. The tension in his bandaged shoulder and wings, the way his head was slightly tilted towards him, listing if he was getting closer or leaving. All little details betray his actual feelings.
"He's so easy to read it's pathetic," Mamba sneered. " He isn't used to any kind of companionship, pushing everybody away even when he desperately wants them to stay." He flinched, Mamba's words felt a little too close for comfort. Although he couldn't say why.
As quiet as he could, he slowly made his way beside Winter. They sat there for a long time staring up at the stars and valleys above and below.
"So Why'd you come out here?" he finally asked. Winter hesitated, still staring at the slowly lighting sky...
"It Helps me think," he finally said.
Obsidian nodded. He knew how it felt to just stare into space, thinking about problems, life, or really whatever was on his mind. "Great place for it…" He noted. Winter glanced at him.
I don't remember much but…" I know I don't belong here," he said "And I'm sorry" Winter raised his head slightly, ears perking upward. " But I'll do my best. Thank you for the sheets." Winter said nothing.
Obsidian turned back to the view. And they watched together as dawn slowly brightened the night sky...
