Inasa Yoarashi had always been a very cheerful boy. All for One, his father, wondered where his son had gotten such an upbeat personality. Yoichi had always taken the world entirely too seriously for his own good. All for One himself had been described as an edgelord in middle school by people long dead for mostly unrelated reasons. Yet All for One could not help adoring his son's big smile and perpetual optimism. In anyone else it would have been grating, but All for One felt happy whenever his dear child was happy.
Perhaps Inasa had gotten his personality from his mother, a woman with a sunshine smile who had charmed the Ruler of the Underworld into pretending to be an ordinary salaryman and starting a family with her. Inasa had certainly gotten his powerful Whirlwind quirk from her. All for One had always known neither of his family members would accept his criminal profession. That lesson had been driven home with his brother. So he'd lain low and hidden his most extreme political opinions (such as how people with the strongest quirks, i.e. himself, should rule over everyone else). When he took over Japan, he'd either appease his wife by offering her a city or brainwash her, whichever seemed easier at the time.
Inasa was so cute, and sweet, and earnest, yet it still caught All for One off-guard when his son returned home from middle school one day and declared, "I want to become a hero!"
All for One choked and spewed coffee out of his nose. He should have seen this coming. Inasa was entirely too honest to understand the corruption of Hero Society, and too kind to resist helping others. Alas, the heroic impulses had definitely come from his side of the family. This situation could not turn out like his little brother. Inasa must be dissuaded.
Mopping coffee off his shirt, All for One asked, "May I ask why the career change, my dear son? Last I heard, you wanted to be a pilot."
Inasa wrinkled his nose. "That was in elementary school, Dad." He handed paper towels to his father and helped clean up. "My teacher said that heroes save people. I want to be cool and protect the world."
All for One said, "You could work in a hospital like your mother, and look after injured people. A far more noble profession."
"That would be an awesome job, too. But my grades aren't the best. I don't think I can become a doctor like mom." Inasa shuffled his feet. "Everyone says that I have a powerful quirk, and I could become a great hero. I want to save people like Endeavor. I saw him on television today—he's amazing!"
At least Inasa hadn't decided to idolize All Might. That was the only possible way this situation could have gotten even worse. All for One wanted to laugh or maybe cry. "Heroes…aren't what you think. Especially not Endeavor."
Inasa blinked up at his father in his usual earnest, clueless way. "I know it's a hard job. I'm not afraid of hard work." He flexed a bicep.
It was on the tip of All for One's tongue to tell his son all about HPSC corruption, starting with Lady Nagant's kill count. But then he'd have to answer awkward questions about how an ordinary salaryman who supposedly worked in comic book publishing knew all of this. No, it would be better to arrange for Inasa to have a chance encounter with Endeavor. Then Endeavor's naturally charming self would surely cure his darling son of his hero delusion.
Inasa stormed into the house, throwing his backpack against the wall. "Endeavor is a jerk!"
"Oh, you poor boy. What happened?" All for One handed his son his favorite granola bar. He'd already prepared comfort food, since he'd arranged for Inasa and Endeavor's first meeting today.
"He treated me like trash." Inasa scowled. "So I'm going to become a better hero than that rude guy."
All for One resisted the urge to bang his head against the wall. He should have known it wouldn't be that easy. Stubbornness also ran in his family. Fortunately, he had a backup plan. "Endeavor is much worse than rude. He abuses his children. Uh, I know this because it's research for an Endeavor-based comic book one of my authors is writing."
"That's horrible!" Inasa gasped.
All for One nodded. "The HPSC covers up all scandals related to the top heroes, so he'll never be punished. Now don't you see that heroes are the worst? Would you like your dad to buy you an airplane to practice your future pilot career?"
"We have to save Endeavor's kids!" Inasa shouted. Wind whipped around him in his excitement. His eyes sparkled and he clenched his fists.
All for One stared. "We do?"
"If we're the only ones who know about this and care, then we have to do something." Inasa turned for the door, as if he had every intention of storming the number two hero's mansion.
All for One grabbed his son by the back of his shirt and lifted him up in the air. "Young man, what exactly are you planning to do?"
Inasa tilted his head sideways. "Uh…stop Endeavor!"
"And how will you do that?"
Inasa bit his lip. "I'll ask Mom."
Oh, dear, this situation would only get worse if his wife got involved. She was less easy to deceive with stories about comic book research. However, she shared her son's passion for helping the less fortunate and would not rest until the entire Todoroki family was safe. Between clenched teeth, All for One said, "This is too dangerous for you. I'll handle the situation."
"Thanks, Dad! You're the best father ever!" Inasa's big smile made All for One feel like all this difficult child-rearing stuff was worth it.
A few days later, All for One presented Dabi, aka Touya Todoroki, strapped down to a laboratory gurney. "Endeavor's son ran away from home and burned himself up. I've arranged with the doctor to give him skin grafts, then get him into therapy. Your mother loves therapy, she keeps trying to get me to attend it. According to her it's like some sort of magic fix-people button."
Looking down at the burned man covered in stitches, Inasa asked, "Uh, is he alive?"
"Mmph mmph!" Dabi protested against his gag.
"Oh!" Inasa jumped. He removed Dabi's gag. "Give me a moment, I'll untie you."
Dabi screamed, "I'll kill you! I'm going to burn the world to the ground to get revenge on my father."
Inasa stuck the gag back in. "Gosh, he seems very unstable. Now I understand why you have him tied down. Are all Todorokis this grumpy?"
"Only the ones who want to become heroes, because heroes suck." All for One needed to be certain to drive this point home. "Are you happy now?"
Inasa blinked up like a cow gazing at an incoming train and refusing to move. "Didn't Endeavor have other children we also need to save?"
"No." All for One refused to chase down more Todorokis. Dabi had been bad enough. His left hand throbbed from the bitemark. Only his foolish little brother got to bite him. Dabi had been lucky not to have died again.
"Dad, I could have sworn you said children, plural."
"You must have misheard me."
"Surely Endeavor at least has a wife who might need help."
"Nope, he reproduced asexually."
Inasa turned to Dabi. "Do you have any other family?" He eased out the gag.
Dabi screamed, "No one else loves me or understands me!"
"Never mind." Inasa put the gag back in and patted Dabi's head. "You've got a hot spirit. With a little love and tender care, I'm sure you'll be fine." He turned to his father. "Thank you, Dad! You're a real hero!" Inasa threw his arms around his father and hugged him.
"Jeez, I help you out and I get insults in return?" All for One grumbled. "You're spending a week in the bank vault for calling me a hero."
"Sorry, Dad." Inasa hung his head and walked down the stairs, toward the bank vault. He was a good boy, very well-trained. He even seemed happy in the vault as long it was stocked with gym equipment. Actually, Inasa seemed to think the vault was for training his quirk. He kept blowing down the doors, and All for One kept building them stronger. There was no way to stop Inasa from using his quirk except by removing air from the vault, which would be a problem for other reasons. All for One was starting to wonder if there was a flaw in his bank vault parenting.
On second thought, nah.
Although All for One had been hoping to recycle Dabi into a lab experiment after his son forgot about him, Inasa kept insisting on visiting Dabi. And he got his mother involved in Dabi's therapy plan. They'd both adopted Dabi into the family. They didn't even seem to care when he regularly set the house on fire. At least Dabi calmed down after getting involved in a drama club at his new school.
Everything had been going according to plan until Inasa stormed home and shouted, "Dad, you lied about Endeavor not having more children!"
"Why would you say that?" All for One asked, hiding his phone because he had been plotting quirk theft in his texts.
Inasa put his hands on his hips. "Because I ran into his other son at the U.A. recommendation exam." He frowned. "All of Endeavor's children seem very emotionally constipated. It must be poor parenting. Big brother Touya was also very grumpy before Mom gave him hugs and I gave him hot-blooded exchanges of blows."
All for One gasped. "Why were you at U.A., my little whirlwind? Didn't you give up on becoming a hero?"
"No. Why would you think that?"
"Because I showed you how much Hero Society sucks!"
Tilting his head, Inasa blinked like an owl contemplating the tragedy of daylight. "And I told you I'd become a hero to reform the system. Dad, we have more important matters to talk about. Why didn't you tell me about Shouto Todoroki?"
All for One massaged his forehead. Maybe he could accelerate his plans to destroy Hero Society before his son had time to graduate. He lied, "Well, I didn't know that Endeavor had another child. I don't pay attention to that fool's personal life."
"Okay." Inasa stared harder at his father. "How are we going to save Shouto Todoroki?"
We? "We" was a very unpleasant word. All for One preferred to make things into other people's problems. "Why don't you befriend the Todoroki brat? Then you can teach him all about manly spirit and true heroism or whatever."
"Do you think that might come across as pushy after he already made it clear he doesn't want to be friends?"
"Nonsense, pushy is how you show that you care. Stalking is love. If he complains, stick him in a bank vault."
Inasa shuffled his feet. "I don't want to go that far…kidnapping is illegal…Mom says that I should always respect a no…"
All for One felt tired. "If you won't listen to your wonderful father, then do the opposite of stalking and attend Shiketsu instead. You'll give the brat loads of space, and you can become rivals." Also, the more distance, the less likely his son was to be dragged into more Todoroki family drama.
Inasa snapped his fingers. "Excellent idea! I'll get started now." He marched for the door. Then he stopped, as if an idea occurred to him. "Dad, are there any more Todoroki kids?"
"No."
"Are you sure?"
All for One rolled his eyes. "Do you really think someone like Endeavor managed to have sex more than twice? I'm sure."
Inasa bit his lip. "It's just, you said that last time…"
"Are you accusing your father of lying?" All for One barked. "Rude! Into the vault for a week!"
"Sorry, Dad." Hanging his head, Inasa opened the door to the basement where the vault was located. "I'll train even harder in the vault so I can make Shouto Todoroki acknowledge me."
All for One sighed, already anticipating another destroyed vault door. It was difficult, being such a great father.
OMAKE TIME!
All for One: Hi, I'm a centuries-old walking disaster.
Inasa's Mother: Nothing a little love couldn't fix.
All for One: Darling, you could spend your whole lifetime trying.
Inasa's Mother: Aw, how romantic.
#
Shouto: And that's part ten of my tragic backstory, which I will tell anyone at any excuse.
Inasa: Have you considered vaulting your dad?
Shouto: What is that?
Inasa: It's when you lock up a family member in a bank vault. I know, it's a little odd, but it's a family tradition on my dad's side.
Shouto: You might be onto something! It would certainly stop my father from complaining about me not using my flames.
#
Inasa: Jeez, you're grumpy like your older brother.
Shouto: You know Natsuo?
Inasa: THERE ARE MORE OF YOU THAN TOUYA?!
Shouto: MY BIG BROTHER IS ALIVE?!
#
Inasa: Dad, I found out today that Shouto has another sibling.
All for One: Oh, right, the girl.
Inasa: THERE'S A FOURTH CHILD?!
All for One: You can't expect me to remember people who don't have quirks worth stealing. In my defense, even Natsuo's own father can't remember him.
