One week passed and Jay still hadn't talked to anybody from Intelligence but Kevin. Because of the situation, Voight had approved for Jay to take a sabbatical with pay on a 5-minute phone call. Hailey had talked to him, while Jay was clenching his fists. Other than that tense phone call, Jay hadn't said a word to most of Intelligence. Passing that point, Hailey had some good news for the next time Jay visited.
"Hey, baby," Jay kissed her. Hailey smiled, "So, I got good news,"
"I like good news," Jay smiled, making Hailey laugh. She continued, "Dr. Rhodes said he could discharge me today, I told him you could sign the papers,"
"That's great! When's he coming by?" This made Jay's day, knowing that his girlfriend was finally able to leave the hospital.
"I think he said the next time he'd come by was during his rounds," Hailey replied. Jay smiled even bigger if that was possible. He and Hailey kept talking until there was a knock at the door.
"Hey, there," Dr. Rhodes stood at the door, "Normally I would say that this is an early birthday or Christmas gift, but, since I'm obliged to give you this, you can just thank me," He joked. Jay chuckled as he took the papers and pen. He quickly signed the papers and gave them back to Dr. Rhodes.
"Okay, we do have conditions that have to be met, though. Hailey's not allowed to get up much. She can stand up to get food, go to the bathroom, a maybe an extra few minutes, but that's it. You need to rest as much as you can,"
"Damn it," Hailey grumbled. Dr. Rhodes chuckled, continuing, "I'll write a prescription for pain pills, though you don't have to use them if you really don't need to, but I would recommend it. You had surgery on your neck not even a week and a half ago; you're gonna be in pain. If you need it, I can also prescribe anti-nausea or anti-anxiety pills, just in case,"
"Sure," Jay quickly took the offer before Hailey had a chance to decline. The doctor continued after giving Jay the script, "I also want to Hailey to talk with someone with our psych unit. I think Dr. Charles is at a conference, but I'm sure that Dr. Reese would be more than willing to talk. If you don't want Reese, I can find someone else,"
"You already know what happened. Why do I need to talk about it?" Hailey pouted.
"CPD won't clear you," Dr. Rhodes said. Hailey groaned, "This sucks. Fine. Dr Reese is fine,"
"All right. I'll make some calls later. Meanwhile, get those scripts filled at the pharmacy. I'll make an appointment for a checkup as well. Jay, if anything seems off, you come back immediately. With how severe her injury was, and still is, we want to know if anything is wrong,"
"Got it," Jay nodded.
"Also, only let her eat soft food for the first few days as a precaution. We don't want to aggravate anything in her neck. I would give her lots of ice cream,"
"I like Connor's idea," Hailey looked at Jay, who laughed, "Of course you do,"
Dr. Rhodes left the room while Hailey changed her clothing. It felt good to not have a hospital gown on, but her own sweatpants. Hailey left the room, and then stepped outside of the hospital doors after thanking Rhodes. She smiled and Jay helped her into the front seat. She ended up falling asleep and Jay drove them home. When Jay looked over to tell Hailey that they were home, he smiled at the sight of a sleeping Hailey beside him. Jay got out of the car and carefully carried her to their door. From the movement, Hailey stirred a bit, "Jay?"
"Hey, baby," he replied, "We're home. You fell asleep in the car, and I didn't want to wake you. You can go back to sleep," His girlfriend snuggled against his chest, welcoming his embrace. Jay set Hailey down on the couch after fighting the keys to open his door. When Jay set Hailey down, he put his keys away.
"How're you feeling? You need anything?" Jay was going into protective mode. Hailey held out her hand towards him, telling him to come closer, "You,"
Jay's heart melted at that word. He sat on the couch, and Hailey rested her head in his lap, falling back asleep almost immediately. Jay pulled out his phone from his pocket and called his union rep, Ezra Duncan.
"Duncan," a deep voice replied. Jay cleared his throat, "Hi, I'm Jay Halstead,"
"We've met before, right?"
"Many times. I'm an army ranger," he said, hoping it would jog Ezra's memory. Luckily, it did, "Right, Halstead. I remember you. What's up?"
"I got something serious. If it gets anywhere, it's gonna turn into a lawsuit for sure,"
"Jay, I've seen many things as a union rep. What's this lawsuit thing?"
"It's about Roy Walton. You know the whole thing about that?"
"I do. What about it?"
"FBI's wasting their time. They're not gonna find any trace of him. The night he went missing, he died. Um, Hailey Upton found Hank Voight beating up Walton and convinced him to bring Walton in. Voight hadn't called anything in, but still agreed to bring him in. Voight went to handcuff Walton, and Walton reached for Voight's gun, pointing at him. Hailey shot him in the head. Voight told her to go home afterwards, not calling anything in still. Hailey's been freaking out and about two weeks ago, she attempted suicide,"
"I'm sorry that happened, but in this case, Upton would get arrested for killing him and not calling it in,"
"Are you kidding me?" Jay raised his voice, making Hailey stir. He quickly lowered his voice, "Seriously? She was trying to keep both of them from going behind bars. Is there any way that she doesn't get arrested?"
"I don't know, Jay. This is beyond my level. I can recommend a lawyer, though. He's worked a few cases like this,"
"Sure,"
"Rajesh Lawrence. I'll email you his information. He owes me a favour, so I think I can easily get a meeting for you,"
"Thanks, Ezra,"
"No problem. Oh, and do not speak a word of this to anyone. Tell Hailey what's going on, but nobody else. If word gets out, you might not even have a chance,"
"Got it. Nobody but Hailey. Thanks," Jay then hung up just as Hailey was waking up.
"Who was that?" She yawned. Jay stroked her hair, "Union rep. He's gonna set up a meeting for us with a good lawyer,"
"Okay. I'm hungry," Hailey said. Jay laughed, "That's good. Ice cream?" Hailey nodded. Jay carefully got up, getting her a bowl of chocolate peanut butter ice cream.
"You feeling okay? I can get the prescriptions filled," Jay asked. Hailey shook her head, "I don't want to go out, but I want to be with you. Plus, I don't like pain pills. You know that,"
This was true. Every time Jay could remember, Hailey never took the pain pills, since they made her nauseous and drowsy. She would either downplay the pain or have Tylenol. Hailey still had nightmares regularly about her childhood, and the pain pills always made them worse.
"Okay, that's okay," Jay nodded, "At some point, I think it would be a good idea to fill the prescriptions, though. It's good to have them just in case,"
"M'kay," Jay didn't think that Hailey was really paying attention, she was too busy eating her ice cream. Jay laughed, knowing that was her favourite ice cream. He sat back down on the couch and turned on the TV to the news. Jay looked over at Hailey, who had finished her ice cream and was now leaning against him, watching the news with him. She looked up at him, kissing his cheek.
"Your beard's getting long," she commented. She was right. Jay normally didn't let it grow out much; he tried to only keep it short. Jay ran his hand over his scruffy chin, "Yeah. I haven't gotten to that, yet. I'll shave soon,"
Hailey kissed his scruffy cheek, "I kinda like it," she smiled. Jay chuckled, "I'll let it grow out for a bit. Just for you,"
"Just a bit," Hailey clarified. Jay nodded. He and Hailey looked at each other and then after a moment, laughed. It was a way to break the tension that was always there. The tension of what had happened with Walton. It was nice to be able to break the tension, even if it was just for 5 seconds.
"Do you think we'll win?" Hailey asked, referring to Voight. Jay nodded firmly, "With the right information, I'm certain we'll win. Is there anything else about Voight and Walton I should know?"
"Do you remember when we were in the car and Voight called me?"
"Vaguely,"
"I don't really remember what I told you, but Voight had basically told me that there was footage of us two outside of the warehouse that night, and he deleted it,"
"If he deleted it, we can't get at it,"
"Jay, you know how hard it is to actually delete something off the internet these days. I would bet that the guy who had the footage did something with it. I think we can track it down if we try hard enough," Hailey said. Jay nodded, "You're right. I'll see what I can do. Do you know who had the footage?"
"I think his name was Mike Irwin," Hailey thought. Jay nodded, "Okay. Let me know if there's anything else that could help us. I should be getting an email soon with the information of a good lawyer. At least that's what the union rep said. I guess we'll see,"
Jay's phone rang and he picked it up, "Hello?"
"Can I speak to Jay Halstead?"
"This is him,"
"Great. My name is Rajesh Lawrence. A good buddy of mine called, saying you might need help with a case?"
"Yes," Jay explained the situation and Rajesh suggested an in-person meeting between him, Jay and Hailey. Jay settled for a day for the lawyer to come to their house and then they hung up.
"We're meeting with the lawyer Saturday," Jay told Hailey. Today was Wednesday, so it was in three days. That also gave them three days to prepare what they needed to say to the lawyer. They had to be careful of what they said because one wrong word and Hailey could get arrested. For the next little while, Jay and Hailey talked about what things would help them win the case.
"This is a short list, Jay. I don't even think a lawyer would go for it," Hailey groaned. Jay rubbed her shoulder, "Don't worry, we'll find some more evidence,"
OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOo
It was now Saturday. Jay was rushing around the house, making sure that everything was in place and Hailey going over what they would say. Jay then heard a knock at the door and rushed to open it to the lawyer.
"Hello. You're Jay?" Lawrence asked. Jay nodded, holding out his hand, "Yes, sir. Jay Halstead. Hailey's in the other room, come in,"
Lawrence sat down on the couch and got to the point, "So, Jay, Hailey, the reason I suggested a meeting was to go over the details Jay told me over the phone. Can you clarify what you said for me?"
"Hailey was with Sergeant Hank Voight the night Roy Walton died. Sergeant Voight was beating Walton and Hailey had convinced Sergeant Voight to bring him into the station and arrest him. When Sergeant Voight went to make the arrest, Walton reached for the gun on Sergeant Voight's belt. Hailey told him to drop it multiple times, but Walton did not comply. Walton was about to shoot to shoot the gun, and Hailey was forced to shoot him for the sake of Sergeant Voight's life. After confirming that Roy Walton was dead, Sergeant Voight forced Hailey to keep it a secret. Hailey was having panic attacks trying to keep this a secret, but she couldn't handle all the stress anymore,"
"And that is what led to the suicide attempt?"
"Yes, sir," Jay replied. Lawrence took notes in a notebook, "Has Sergeant Voight denied or taken responsibility for any of this?"
"No, sir. I confronted him and he didn't deny anything," Jay shook his head. Lawrence wrote in his notebook again, "Do you have any proof that any of this actually happened?"
Jay was silent, thinking. Hailey then spoke up, "No, sir. We don't have any hard proof that this happened. However, there was a video on Mike Irwin's laptop that had a recording of Sergeant Voight and I. Jay and I firmly believe that we are able to locate it; we just need a bit of time,"
"Okay," Lawrence closed his book, "I can give you guys a week. I will come back next Saturday and check on your progress. In the meantime, I will leave and give you guys some time to look for some evidence. If you are unable to find any evidence, I'm afraid we can't move forward,"
"Thanks, Mr. Lawrence," Jay held out his hand and Lawrence firmly shook it. Jay led Lawrence to the door and then came back to Hailey crying. He sat beside her and hugged her, "What's wrong, babe? You in pain?"
Hailey shook her head, "You don't deserve to get caught up in all my drama, Jay. And if we can't bring Voight down, chances are I'll be arrested and in jail for the rest of my life! And all you're hard work will have been for nothing. You don't deserve it. I won't be mad if you want to go out the door and never come back,"
"Oh, Hailey," jay hugged her tighter, "Voight did something really bad to you. He deserves to go to jail. And even if we can't put him and jail and you're arrested, I'm still gonna love you. I'll visit all the time. So, no, I'm not gonna walk out that door. I'm gonna stay right here with you and we're gonna bring him down. I love you, Hailey. I'm not leaving you,"
Sorry this took so long and that it's so short, I just started high school and thinking of the next part of the plot has been really hard. Thanks to all my supporters out there, and if you have any fanfic ideas for One Chicago, I'd be happy to write them. As always, been review as it helps me so much.
