The memorial service was every bit as hard as Jack had thought it would be. Cordelia broke down sobbing, only Xander on one side and Faith on the other, kept her upright. She wasn't just feeling her own pain, she was feeling her counterpart's as well. Just like Xander was, this was something only the two of them or their counterparts could understand. They could identify with their counterparts, because they were them. AG 1 surrounded them, behind them were SG 1 and Janet and Cassie. Buffy, Willow and Joyce were all hurting in their own ways. Joyce loved Xander and Cordelia as though they were her own. And for all the problems between them and Buffy and Willow, they will still friends who cared. Afterward, they all went to Joyce's were she'd prepared a meal for everyone. Feeding people was one of the ways, she showed she cared. Xander and Cordelia quietly thanked her for her generosity and returned to their hotel room, spending the rest of the day, alone with their grief.
The next day they went to Faith's apartment. Jack accompanied them, to help explain the truth to Faith.
"Faith, if you sign this non-disclosure agreement, which basically says you promise never to tell anyone what we're about to tell you, you get to know about our Classified work and why our daughter qualifies as Classified."
Faith signed it so fast, you might be forgiven for thinking the universe blinked.
"Why and how does a baby qualify as Classified?"
"Because, while Kendra Faith is the daughter of Alexander Harris and Cordelia Chase, we didn't make her or give birth to her. Remember, this is Classified and Buffy and Willow especially, can not know about it. For the last nine months we haven't been in a remote part of the world, we've been on an alien planet in another galaxy. That's right, Faith, aliens are real." And Xander proceeded to tell her about the Stargate, Atlantis and the expedition.
"Okay, say I buy that, still doesn't explain how the kid both is and is not, yours." Faith said.
"She's ours because of time travel. See the expedition failed the first time. A version of us and our Commanding Officer, Dr. Elizabeth Weir, ended up traveling back in time, 10,000 years and were trapped there. Dr. Weir succeeded in finding a way to ensure the expedition survived, while we were trapped elsewhere. Since we were stuck there and people in that galaxy were at war with another alien race, we joined the war effort. Up until our involvement, each world had been fighting alone, we proposed they join forces, it worked or they thought it did. A couple hundred years or so after the war ended, the aliens came back, they've been periodically coming back ever since. Now we're dealing with them. Anyway, Kendra Faith, was born to our counterparts, the ones who ended up in the past, they persevered her body and left a message asking that we bury her here, next to Jesse's memorial."
"You been smoking some wacky tabky?"
"No, they're telling you the truth. Xander's been involved with the program since he graduated High School. Cordelia was brought into it after the accident. Because there's more to tell you. The people who built the Stargates, they call themselves the Alterrans, we call them the Ancients, they were humans, who evolved on another planet, in another galaxy. They came to this galaxy millions years ago, they ruled here for a long time and then they left and went to the Pegasus Galaxy, were the expedition currently is. About the time the kid and his lady were getting themselves trapped in the past, the Ancients came back to Earth and Ascended." Jack told her.
Faith looked alarmed when he said that, remembering the Mayor and what it had taken to defeat him. Xander quickly picked up the story.
"They became living energy, Faith. And here's the kicker, so did our counterparts. The Ancients Ascended them as their idea of a reward for helping save the people of the Pegasus Galaxy. But see, the Ancients have all these rules, they consider themselves above it all and ignore everyone else. Our counterparts refuse to do that. So they keep trying to help people, even as living energy."
"Oh gods, that is so like you two. It's how you got involved in the you know what, because you just couldn't keep your noses out of it. And you did help. Alot of people are alive because of the two of you. So yeah, I believe you, because it's exactly what you would do! Aliens, hot damn! Kick butt and take names, you two! And hey! I told you not have too much fun without me! Make it up to me by buying me some new leather pants, come on Queenie, let's go shopping. You need a breather, anyway. The memorial service was rough. Come on, march!" Faith ordered, pulling Cordelia along behind her.
Xander was smiling indulgently.
"So. I take it that's nothing to worry about, kid?" Jack asked, feeling kinda stunned.
"No, that's just Faith being Faith. She believes us and she's trying to keep Cordy's spirits up. As her best friend, she's feels it's part of her job to do that. They'll strip mine the Mall and Cordy will feel better after some retail therapy. My wallet will be a little lighter, but it's worth it to see Cordy smile."
"Is, isn't it, kid." Jack softly, reflecting on Carter's smile and how much he loved it, not to mention, her giggle.
