A/N This is a little one shot inspired by the upcoming log scene. It is my submission to the #Hsbreakup writing prompt. Laura Meyer is credited for the title.
It had been a couple of months since Lucas and Elizabeth had called off the wedding and permanently parted ways. She had been quiet and hadn't really talked much about it, preferring to focus on the students and Jack. Lucas had sold the Queen of Hearts to Mike and Gustav just before leaving town to head to the capital.
Over the past weeks, though, her sense of humor had returned, and she had the sparkle she was known for. But there were still bouts of melancholy that would send her off riding on Sargent. It was that kind of day, apparently, as Nathan came across her sitting by the pond, deep in thought.
Tethering Newton, he approached and startled her out of her thoughts.
"Hi, Nathan," Elizabeth said, giving him a smile.
"Hi, are you all right? You looked deep in thought just now."
"Just thinking about everything."
"You want to talk about it?" Nathan asked.
Elizabeth thought for a moment before answering. "You know, I think I would. I was actually thinking that maybe I should give up on love, too."
Nathan chuckled. "It can't be that bad."
"Oh, it is. I wasted a lot of time on the wrong man."
"Well, we could always start a club." Nathan teased.
"It's not a bad idea at that. We could call it the Lonely Hearts Club."
Nathan grabbed his canteen and took a seat next to her. As he offered it to her, she realized it wasn't water in his canteen.
"Apple Juice? Not exactly something you would expect a Mountie to have in his canteen." Elizabeth teased with a chuckle.
"Hey! Don't knock it. One of my favorite memories included apple juice." Nathan said with a smirk.
Elizabeth handed it over to him and approached her saddlebags, pulling out a muffin and one slice of banana bread. Returning to her seat, she held out one of each to him. He looked at her with a brow raised.
"Two of my favorite memories happened over these so…" Elizabeth said sheepishly.
Nathan smiled as he took the banana bread and broke it in half while she did the same with the muffin. "What a coincidence I have fond memories with them too."
Then he held up the canteen to her and asked softly, "Shall we toast our club?"
They stared for a long moment at each other before Elizabeth said, "Why don't we discuss it over dinner?" He could see the vulnerability reflecting in her eyes.
"Best offer I have had in a while," Nathan replied with a warm smile. "Who knows, we may not even need a club."
After that, they finished up their impromptu picnic, mounted their horses, and headed back to town with their hearts in one accord.
