"PUT THOSE LOCKERS IN FRONT OF THAT DOOR!" Voight ordered, Kevin pushed a row of lockers up some stairs and blocked the entrance. "KIM! MAKAYLA GET IN THE CAR!" Kevin yelled; he held the lockers in place. Kim cradling a crying child unfroze and climbed into the back seat. Meanwhile Voight and Jay loaded duffle bags containing body armor, ammo, weapons and other resources into their getaway vehicles. Kevin joined them and they peeled out of lower CPD as a horde knocked down the barricade and filled the garage. For a split-second Jay could've sworn he saw Adam limping aimlessly in the distance.
In February pure utter mayhem described the 21st District. Cops and civilians were coming up missing, phones were ringing non-stop. Everyone with a badge was falling asleep on paperwork while trying to grasp an explanation for it all. Something to tell Chicago, give their city some peace of mind. But mid-February Intelligence had to start thinking about their families and themselves. Voight gave them two options: either get their loved ones upstairs or take their chances out there because when CPD's doors close they won't open again. There was no light at the end of the tunnel.
"I called Will and he said he'd been bitten, and he won't put us at risk. I tried to explain that we can do something, we don't fully know what we're up against but he's staying at Med and helping patients…" Adam put a hand on Jay's shoulder, he'd had a similar heartbreaking conversation with his family. His sister was held up in some boyfriend's basement and his dad was in Florida fishing. "I did manage to get a hold of Dante and Ellie. I wanted to extend the invitation." They glanced at Dante and Ellie curled up on different sides of the room. "I want you to know you're my brother Jay. I love you, I love everyone in Intelligence. If I can't take care of you guys, I'll tell you what I told Kevin…Take care of the team for me."

An assembly was held a few hours later. "Why didn't we shoot on site!?" Megan stood in the auditorium up on stage in front of the whole school. "The Scholars keep our dignity by honoring who we've lost. We defend ourselves; we do not commit murder out of fear or anger. We are a community; I can't tell you, you'll never be in their position. All we have is our dignity. The walkers took our loved ones, homes, our jobs... Kyle the majority of you seeked refuge here. Ten students buried all their friends to build a safe haven. Kyle, Kyle's wife, Kyle's son knocked on our door. We had bullets and we had guns, if we had Kyle's mentality, Kyle would be dead. We can be heard and respected without aiming for the head!"
The Next Day
The boy's reddish light-brown hair was thick and long. Her fingers were tangled in his curls, Daniel was tucked between her legs. "How are the Lopez's settling in?" She asked. Her second in command moved forward and she yanked him back towards her. "Tio refuses to shower and Maya is acting like a sweet little girl. The guards caught Benny chatting up the supply super-" A gun shot bounced off the school walls and they sprinted out of her office. Daniel unholstered his gun. In the cafeteria Kyle jr. was standing over his dad with a pistol. His dad and him exchanged some hurtful words. Kyle jr. Wanted his father to stand up to Megan and run the community, he thought his father was weak. There was a bullet wound in Kyle's leg. Daniel lowered his weapon and instructed the guards to. "Hey, Jr. we hear you, take a deep breath and come talk to me. We can solve your problem, you aren't in trouble." Kyle Jr. shot Daniel in the head

"For being the only student who volunteered to help me paint my room; you get a gold star." Megan slapped a gold sticker on Daniel's forehead. "I graduated when the world ended. Which makes me the teacher's assistant." Him and her stood too close, he was taller. He leaned down and their lips brushed. "I'm too old for you." She focused on painting again. He joined her and started talking about grand ideas for Pinewood. What made Daniel different from the others was his ability to listen. He read the room; he knew how to make everyone's lives easier. He could tell painting a wall would lift her spirits. "and I love you Daniel."
