"Makayla was sitting up in bed drawing Ashley. Ashley grabbed the sketch book and threw it. "Hey!" Ashley didn't even have to explain herself Makayla knew Ashley hated to be drawn. "I was almost done." Ashley wrestled Makayla onto her back and pulled the covers on top of them. Ashley kissed Makayla's neck but Ashley could tell Makayla wasn't into it. "What's wrong?" Ashley asked. "Why haven't you asked me to marry you?" Marriage? Makayla was a child, they were children. Ashley found a wedding ring in the back pocket of an infected man a couple weeks ago. She was going to give the ring to Gallo to propose to Ellie. "Kim and Kevin would never allow us to get married so young Makayla. I know you love me and one day I'll get down on both knees and beg you to marry me because Makayla you're the kind of person who has options."

"I'm building a playhouse, hey wanna help?" Ashley had been on the island for a month and Kelly was pushing her to get to know Makayla. Ashley picked up the raggedy blanket on the ground and hung it on a lower hanging branch. Ashley already promised Kelly she'd hangout with Makayla. "We need rocks to hold the blanket down on either side. Kelly would cover the blanket in large palms to waterproof the shelter." Ashley went looking for rocks heavy enough to keep their shelter in place. She found the rocks in a circle under this large palm tree covered in drawings. "Adam's memorial tree⦠Adam was my dad, he died during the outbreak." Ashley couldn't relate to Makayla in a lot of ways but grief was something they both experienced. "My mom died during the outbreak." Makayla pulled a pack of crayons out of her back pocket. "We can make your mom a memorial tree. If you miss her you can come here and talk to her. Like I talk to Adam, I tell him everything."

"Do you think we would've been friends in the normal world?" Makayla asked, Ashley shrugged and kicked up sand. "I think you would've been with the artsy click in school. I would've definitely been playing a sport like soccer or softball. I doubt our paths would have crossed plus we went to different schools." Makayla shoved Ashley. "Why can't you be in the moment? Dream a little" Ashley grabbed Makayla's hand and stopped walking. "I would've met you in the hallway. You would've been wearing something ridiculous, and I probably would've made a mean remark. You would've defended yourself and I would've been intrigued enough to talk to you again. We would've never been friends, we would've dated. I see myself hiding in your room because I wanted to see you when you were grounded. We'd sneak out of school and get some cheap street food. Walk around like this looking over our shoulder because at any second your parents could catch us."
