A/N: Enjoy :)
It was on their second day in Osaka as their true selves, when Shinichi and Shiho were about to meet Kazuha and Heiji for a soccer game. They had arrived in their shared hotel room yesterday and to Shinichi's relief Shiho hadn't gone as far in her teasing as to book a room with only one bed. However being so close to her didn't help the detective to avoid that strange feeling that he was getting around his best friend. After the fall of the organization they had been almost inseparable and that feeling got more intense with every moment they spent together.
Sighing Shinichi pulled on his jacket. If they wouldn't leave now, they would be late for the game. As if Shiho had read his thoughts, something she seemed to do quite often, the door to their bathroom opened and she stepped out. He had known that she owned a jersey from Higo, but seeing her wear it just didn't seem right. There was something about seeing another man's name on the clothes that she wore that made him want to ask her to never wear this again. Shaking his head to get these confusing thoughts out of his mind, Shinichi made his way to the door, followed by Shiho.
It didn't take them long to arrive at the stadium where they met Heiji and Kazuha, but little did they know that their peaceful afternoon would be interrupted rather quickly.
Heiji almost rolled his eyes. Of course with him and Shinichi at the same place there had to be a case. At least they had been able to see the first half of the game before this had happened. It turned out that the victim was the assistant coach of Big Osaka and while normally everyone was a suspect, the players had been on the field the whole time. Then again nothing was impossible. However the case was rather simple in Heiji's eyes and Shinichi was already on his way to solving it, so he stayed back. There was something far more interesting that Heiji wanted to investigate and that was the teamwork of Shinichi and Shiho. It was the first time that he saw them as partners and he was fascinated by their way of working. It was obvious that they were doing this often and it made Heiji happy that his rival had found someone who supported him in cases.
"They are just partners not a couple, are they?" A voice pulled Heiji out of his observations. When he looked up he saw Higo standing next to him.
Going back to his observations, Heiji came to a conclusion. He could see that the feelings between Shinichi and Shiho, even when they didn't seem to notice them, were not the ones of only partners. Despite that Shinichi and he were detectives, Heiji had to admit that their conclusions weren't useful when it came to feelings. It had taken him years to realize Kazuha's feelings and his own and he was sure that Shinichi wasn't any better at it. Sure, him and Ran had given dating a go, but since Shiho had changed back to her true self, Heiji knew from Kazuha that the childhood friends had stopped seeing each other that way.
Admittedly this deduction had taken Heiji longer than he would like to admit and it might have been only possible because of Kazuha's input, another thing he would never admit, but he had come to the conclusion that his rival and best friend was clearly in love with Shiho. Maybe it shouldn't have taken him so long to realize that, but then again Shinichi himself hadn't, so he was still better than his rival. However seeing the partners so close together, not only during this case but also when they had just spend time together before the game, made it as clear as day what feelings were lingering in the air. With Higo seemingly interested in Shiho by the looks of it, maybe that could push Shinichi in the right direction. Considering that, Heiji answered Higo after a moment.
"They're not in a relationship."
Higo was encouraged by the new information about Shiho's relationship status and approached her and Shinichi, who had just solved the case. Now Heiji could only hoped that he had done the right thing. Maybe jealousy was the best way for dense detectives to realize their feelings.
"You did amazing with your deduction." A voice said behind Shinichi, as soon as he and Shiho had wrapped up the case.
The detective turned around, ready to tell whoever it was that it was not a problem, but stopped when he saw Higo looking at Shiho.
"I don't think that we have met before. I'm Higo Ryusuke. Thank you for solving the case." He was smiling at Shiho, who to Shinichi's surprise was smiling back.
"The circumstances might not be the best, but it's nice to meet you. I'm Miyano Shiho."
"I hope you don't think of me as rude, but you remind me of a girl who I met in another case. You look almost like sisters now that I think about it. She watched my games and supported me so much and I'll always be thankful for that."
There was a fond smile on Shiho's face and to Shinichi's resentment a light blush stole its way on her cheeks.
"If you think so highly of her, I don't mind being compared to her. I watch every game of you as well, but I'm more in the background you could say. However that doesn't mean that I didn't support your decision to change teams. Sometimes you have to change to become someone new and be happier with your life."
While Higo was more than fascinated by Shiho, Shinichi was getting more annoyed by the second. He had known that Shiho had a soft spot for the soccer player, but that she was now openly flirting with him was making his stomach turn. Sure, he knew that men were noticing Shiho, she was attractive after all, but so far no one had made a move on her. It was new to him that someone would be so open about his interest in her and what made it even worse was that Shiho liked him.
Back when she had been Ai, she had been a fan of Higo as well and Shinichi knew that the reason for that was that she saw similarities in their past. What had been a betrayal of his old team for Higo, had been the betrayal of the Black Organization for Shiho. Of course did it help matters that Higo was good looking and had been kind to Ai when he had met her.
Before today Shinichi had never worried about the possibility of Shiho spending time with someone else. Since they had both turned back to their true selves, they were together every day. They walked to school together, had classes together, solved cases together, had dinner together and sometimes even fell asleep together when there was a complicated case or school project that they had to work on. She had become even more a part of his life than when they had been Conan and Ai and he couldn't imagine her next to someone other than himself.
A giggle from Shiho pulled him out of his thoughts and sent a painful stab into his heart. It was true that Shiho was generally happier and her laugh was heard more frequently these days, but a giggle was new and it was directed at another man.
"Why don't I invite you to dinner as a thank you for your hard work on this case?"
Despite him not being well-versed in romantic innuendos, it wasn't hard for Shinichi to guess what Higo was implying. He was asking Shiho on a date and at this rate Shinichi was almost sure that his partner would agree to it. However before Shiho could reply, Kazuha came to his rescue.
"If you wouldn't mind, Higo, I think we would all like to go for dinner. Of course you don't have to pay for us as well, but I think after this case we all deserve a nice evening."
Kazuha knew that this was rude of her and that she had basically invited herself, Heiji and Shinichi, but when she looked at Shinichi, she knew that she had done the right thing. Considering that her boyfriend was a detective as well, Kazuha knew one thing about these supposedly genius detectives. They were completely useless when it came to their own feelings. Heiji and Shinichi were the same in that aspect.
At first Kazuha hadn't wanted to help Shinichi, because she had been critical about Shiho. Kazuha was friends with Ran and had already pictured Ran and Shinichi and her and Heiji on a double-date. When Ran had told her that Shinichi and her had decided to just stay friends, Kazuha had been disappointed. Then when Shinichi had shown up with Shiho, Kazuha had seen the reason. However the more she had watched Shinichi and Shiho together, the more she had realized that these two fit perfectly together.
There was a bond between Shinichi and Shiho that was so obvious despite that they were never doing anything to show it off. It was in the way she stood by his side and bounced back his ideas during the case, it was the light shift in Shinichi's stance when she was close so he was always besides her. The moment when Shinichi had solved the case, he had stepped in front of Shiho, shielding her from the suspect, so if he would try anything he was in the way of harming Shiho.
The scientist was harder to read for Kazuha, but the way she supported Shinichi and didn't mind that he took all the spotlight while she stayed back with a small smile, said a lot. Maybe years of watching Heiji's deduction were finally paying off, because Kazuha could see all the evidence.
Knowing how brilliant these two were, it was a shame that they were idiots when it came to their own feelings. Kazuha wasn't entirely sure if they were completely unaware of their feelings for each other, because there was jealousy in Shinichi's eyes just now while he was watching Shiho and Higo, but it was clear as day that he needed help and that she had offered him with her words.
Higo was a little surprised by Kazuha's suggestion, but in the end agreed and the five made their way to a nearby restaurant. While Higo was gently leading Shiho along the streets and Shinichi was busy seething with jealousy, Kazuha pulled Heiji aside.
"Why do I have the feeling that you were involved in this turn of events?"
"All I did was tell Higo that Miyano is not seeing anyone, which is technically true. Maybe something good will come of it."
"Just because it took jealousy for you to realize your feelings for me, doesn't mean that it has to work for them." Kazuha whispered angrily. "What if you just destroyed their chances?"
"It's a little late to worry about that now." Heiji said and looked a little concerned at Shinichi, whose eyes were still glued to his partner and Higo.
"If you're wrong with your deduction to this case, oh great detective, I'll personally make you regret it." Kazuha threatened before joining the other three.
The evening dragged on for Shinichi. Not even discussing his thoughts about the latest case with Heiji could keep his mind off of the obvious flirting Higo was doing. The soccer player was not only complimenting his partner on her looks, but also seemed genuine interested in her as person. Shinichi knew that he should be happy for her, after all it was rare for Shiho to enjoy herself so openly with others and Higo was a good guy, but his heart was squeezing painfully at the sight of the two. After another hour of torture for him, he excused himself.
Shinichi saw the skeptical looks of Kazuha and Heiji, but he was past caring. The day had been exhausting on an emotional level and he was ready to end it. When he was back in their room, he took a deep breath. The way to their hotel had cleared his head. Despite what Shinichi tried to tell himself, he knew the truth that he had uncovered today. He had suspected it for a while, but now he was sure of his deduction. With that in mind, he knew what he had to do.
It was an hour later when the door to their hotel room opened and Shiho entered.
"I'm back." Her soft voice announced while she took off her shoes and made her way over to him.
"So how was your date?" The detective tried his best to keep his emotions out of his voice, but then again he had never been talented at acting despite that his mother was an actress.
"Heiji and Kazuha were there and so were you before you wanted to leave so suddenly. I might not have any experience with it, but that can hardly be called a date."
"You still enjoyed your time with Higo, didn't you?" He stood up from his place by the window.
"Is that jealousy I hear from the great meitantei?"
"So what if I'm jealous?" They were facing each other now and he was looking seriously at her.
Shiho could see so much emotions in his eyes and especially one that she had always hoped would be directed at her. However that couldn't be true. There was no way that he was feeling that for her. She knew that he and Ran had agreed to be just friends months ago, but she shouldn't get her hopes up. She was his partner, nothing else.
"It was a long day. We should go to sl-" She was about to turn around when he stopped her by taking a hold of her hands.
"You're running away again to avoid the question."
He was still looking at her with that determination that was one of the things that made her fall in love with him in the first place, but she couldn't let him ruin his life.
"Don't do this. We're partners, but you're meant to be with her." Her heart hurt at her own words, but she had to say them.
"Is it so hard to believe that I want you?" Still seeing the doubt in her eyes, Shinichi stepped even closer to her. "I'm in love with you, Shiho."
"Do you really mean that?" For the first time there was hope shining in her eyes.
"You know that detectives hate lies and only search for the truth. Of course I mean it."
"I believe you." A smile light up her face. Her words weren't a confession like his had been, but Shinichi knew in that moment that she held the same feelings for him.
Mirroring her smile and gently taking a hold of her cheek, Shinichi finally kissed the woman, who was now not only his partner but also the woman he loved.
