Hello to whoever is reading this!
I thank you for giving this story a chance I really appreciate it and hope you enjoy it.
This is my first time writing fanfic and if you have any criticism to help me improve then I will gladly hear it.
Also English isn't my first language so if you see any errors, please feel free to point them out.
AND ALSO please read the end notes. Alright that's it, to the story!
One of the earliest memories (of this life at least) that I can remember is from when I was 4 years old.
Grandpa had been teaching Luffy and me how to hunt animals in the forest. We were walking back to the village where we lived with Makino while Grandpa was away doing Marine-stuff. We brought with us our first loot ever: a giant dead tiger that Grandpa killed and a larger than average wolf that Luffy and I killed together. Grandpa made us carry the tiger ourselves so we were going at a slower pace than normal.
"Hey Grandpa, how come all the animals in the forest are so huge?" I interrupted Grandpa who was in his latest rant of how great Marines we will be in the future.
"Yeah Grandpa! None of the animals near the village are as big as these!" Luffy agreed immediately, bored and hungry already.
"Don't interrupt me you brats!" BONK!! BONK!!
"OW! / OUCH!"
"Anyway, how should I know that? Just be glad they are big enough to fill your stomachs you bottomless pits of food!" Grandpa retorted after giving his patented 'Fist of Love'.
"HEY! Who are you calling a bottomless pit!? You eat MORE than us!" Luffy yelled at him angrily with a steaming bump steadily growing in his head.
"YEAH OLD MAN! stop being such a hypo- hypocru... Hey Luffy what word did Makino used?"
"Hypocrauti?"
"Yeah! Stop being an hypocrauti!" I yelled at him with an identical bump in my head.
"It doesn't matter how much I eat! I am the one who brings the food!"
"HA! But now we can bring our own meat by ourselves! And as much as we want! Right Natsu?" "Yes! And sometimes we eat with Makino too so now we don't need you to bring us food!"
"Oh yeah? And who is going to cook the meat for you huh?" The smug looking marine asked us.
We widened our eyes in horror at the realization that neither one of us could cook before looking at each other and gulping in fright.
"Uhhhhh... Makino?" "And what, are you going to keep robbing the poor woman of her time and money so that she takes care of you?"
"Hey! We are going to pay her with our treasure... someday." "Bwahaha what treasure?"
"Stop looking so so so... smug! We will get a treasure once we grow up and pay Makino with it!" "We already told her we would and she said it was okay!"
"Mmm yeah yeah, you brats keep telling yourselves that." He smiled condescendingly at us.
(We wouldn't find out until years later from Makino that Grandpa had been paying her for all the things she bought us. Food, water, clothes, etc.
"He really did that?" Luffy was pouting and sounded both disappointed and slightly grateful. He was excited to pay her himself but now he knew he couldn't.
"Yeah of course he did, he is your grandfather after all. He even insisted to pay me more for taking care of you but I refused, all the money I got from him was exactly what I spent on providing for you guys." Makino smiled sweetly at us.
"Why didn't you accept the extra money from him? I'm sure he would've given you a fortune for taking care of these two little monsters."
"Hey!" "Naaaami don't be mean to us!" Luffy and I wailed at her, sending her mock looks of indignation.
"What? It's true." "Well yeah, but you don't have to be so mean."
Makino started giggling from behind the bar so the three of us turned to her.
"Well to answer your question, I didn't accept the extra money because taking care of and watching my two little boys grow up was reward enough for me." She gave us such a pure and sweet smile that I was sure I was about to get cavities. And that was saying something considering how much candy I can eat.
Luffy and I of course took that wholesome statement with dignity and gratitude. No matter what other people may tell otherwise.
"AWWW! Look, they are blushing, how adorable!" "NO WE ARE NOT!!/NO WE ARE NOT!!"
Makino just kept on giggling, not helping at all.)
We were getting closer to the village so we stopped arguing. As we got closer a question popped into my mind but I was reluctant to ask since I was 90% it could led to me receiving another Fist of Love. It took me a couple of minutes before I gathered enough courage to ask.
"Hey Grandpa?" "Mhm?"
"You keep telling us on and on how we are going to be great marines and how awesome marines are but what do they do?" I asked him with a straight face.
"Eh? What do you mean 'what do they do'? I already told you brat, you just never listen!" He yelled at me, already raising his fist to give me an extra dose of love for not listening to him.
"Hey hey hey hey wait! You have never told us what you guys actually do besides 'punching pirates and bad guys really hard'." I yelled at him, dropping the tiger to raise my arms in defense, desperately wanting to avoid another Fist of Love.
"Natsu is right Grandpa you have not told us." Luffy stepped up next to me to support me, even if it meant he also received a Fist of Love.
Garp stopped and considered what his grandsons had told him. He looked back at his memories and realized they were right. He had never told them what marines do in their jobs, just punch bad guys. To neither of them or Ace when he went to visit him at Dadan's place. He lowered his fist and started to think more, getting more excited by the second. This was it! He finally had a chance to convince his grandsons that they should be marines! They even actually look like they were listening intently, waiting for an actual answer! The only thing that could make this even better was if Ace was here too to listen to him.
And so Garp opened his mouth to answer them eagerly. Unfortunately for him all the grief he has caused to Sengoku and higher-ups of the marines was about to bite him in the ass.
For you see, among the marines due to being one of if not the best, Garp is responsible for training many marines. Therefore in order to assure that 'he wouldn't corrupt any of them with his idiocy' (Sengoku's words) he was forced by Sengoku, Tsuru and Kong to memorize to the letter the marine's ridiculously huge manual of rules so that he could teach them to new recruits. Even if he himself didn't follow most of them, he was practically conditioned into uttering the rules and duties of the marines when someone asked him. Sengoku accomplished this through many many months of work (*cough* torture *cough*) with Garp.
Thus, when he answered his grandson's question, a whole speech prepared in his head about the best things marines get to do and see, his conditioned training took over and he told his free-spirited grandsons all the rules, regulations and duties a typical marine must follow.
By the time he realized his mistake it was already too late. He could see it in their almost completely disgusted faces.
"So marines have to be at the beck and call of their bosses all day and night, at all times?" Luffy asked, looking horrified.
"Well yes b-"
"And they are told who they can and cannot fight?" I asked equally horrified.
"Sometimes mayb-"
"And they must follow every order they receive, no matter if they want to or not?"
"I mean-"
"And on top of all they are told where they are allowed to go, sometimes ordered to stay in the same place permanently!?"
"..." Garp could do nothing but stare back at them in silence, also horrified at what came out of his mouth. He knew that all they said back at him was true. Although those rules no longer matter to him because he wouldn't be punished because of all his accomplishments and reputation, there was a time when he was a mere recruit with no authority who had to follow all those rules no matter how despised them at the time. He also knew that if he had been told what he just told his grandsons before he joined the marines at their age he may have never joined them. He honestly just barely got through following all the rules because of Sengoku and Tsuru helping him. Luffy and Natsu may never even want to try at all and it was all because of his stupid mouth.
Luffy and I stared at each other, with horror on our faces at the thought of joining the marines. We slowly composed ourselves, straightened up, nodded at each other before finally turning to our Grandpa with serious faces.
"Grandpa, we have decided." We spoke to him in unison, in the only way twins can, even fraternal.
"Wh- what have you decided?" He turned to us with what looked to be a little bit of hope but mostly resignation.
"WE WILL NEVER BECOME MARINES!!" We yelled together into the sky, making both a declaration and a promise.
"LIKE HELL YOU WON'T! COME HERE BRATS!" He yelled right back with fury.
We of course ran like hell, taking the tiger with us (we were still hungry) but still somehow managing to just barely outrun Grandpa and his Fists of Love. And what else could we do but laugh our asses off the whole time.
"SHISHISHISHI!" "GHIGHIGHIGHI!"
"STOP LAUGHING YOU BRATS AND COME HERE AND FEEL THE POWER OF LOVE!"
"And that is why Luffy and I decided we will never join the marines, no matter how much Grandpa tried to convince us otherwise." A 13-year-old Monkey D. Natsu told a 14-year-old Nami who was listening intently. The two of them were resting from the intense training while Ace, Luffy, and Sabo kept on going, fighting what appeared to be multiple clones of Natsu.
"Wow, your grandpa really sabotaged himself didn't he?" Nami asked, wondering why on Earth he would say all of that if he wanted to turn his grandsons into marines.
"I know right? I don't really get it either." Natsu shrugged.
"You still haven't told me why you two decided to be pirates or how you met Ace and Sabo or how you regained your memories of your past life." Nami glared at him, believing he was dodging her questions.
"Calm down alright, I am getting to it. Geez some people have no patience these days." Natsu held his hands up in defense, whispering the last part.
"WHAT WAS THAT?!"
"Nothing! Nothing!"
So that's it!
What do you think? I hope you like it and that you will keep on reading the story when I update.
So a few things before I go:
Yes I decided to use the name Natsu because of Fairy Tail. What can I say? I love that anime and I think that Monkey D. Natsu has a nice ring to it.
Yes Nami is early, yes Sabo isn't with the Revolutionaries. There is a good explanation for those (at least I hope they're good) you'll just have to wait and see.
Also try to guess what Devil Fruit Natsu has; hint: is the same one from another fanfic, a Luffy with a different devil fruit fanfic. I will recommend and tell you guys which fanfic it is once Natsu's devil fruit is revealed.
Alright that's it, hopefully I will update soon, definitely will have new chapter ready by next week.
Bye!
