Rose followed Jack to the end of the driveway, where he leaned against a nearby tree and just stared into space, his mind reeling from the new discovery of a brother. Rose stood back, just watching him. Her heart ached for him. She knew that this new discovery had hit him hard because he had grown up as an only child. When he had lost his parents, he had felt alone...alone enough to run away and not look back. To know that he had a brother, that he hadn't been alone after all...it must be a lot to take in.
Finally, after a few minutes, Rose couldn't take his silence any longer. She stepped close enough to place a hand on his shoulder.
"Darling, are you alright? I know that this is a lot to find out," Rose spoke up, her voice soft with concern.
Jack took a deep breath and shook his head. "It is a lot. Not only was Ma, not Pa's first love...I'm not even his first son...and...he didn't even know. After all these years...thinking that I was alone….wandering the world as some poor lonesome artist...I find out not only am I not poor...but...I was never alone. Not only did I have a family...but...a brother...and I never knew…"
"Oh, Jack…"
"I feel...so…," Jack struggled with the words because he felt so guilty for feeling this way because he knew that his father didn't have any bad intentions. He had only been trying to protect not only himself...but the people he loved. He was probably devastated, thinking that he had lost a child...but to know that he hadn't and his father never knew… "I feel betrayed. For both me and Pa…"
"Oh, Jack!"
"I don't even know by who. I can't be angry at Daisy, because she been through more than I could ever think of…"
"It wasn't that long ago when you were Daisy," Rose wrapped her arms around his waist.
Jack just snorted at that. "You have that right. Seems like Aunt Enid would have a lot in common with Cal. I have a brother Rose. I didn't have to be alone…"
"I know. It's quite the revelation."
Jack gave a dry chuckle. "Yeah. Got dealt another set of cards. Now to figure out how to roll with them."
Rose smiled and kissed his cheek. "One card at a time. How about that?"
"I can do that," Jack smiled, glancing back towards the house. "How rude am I, huh? We should get back."
"Will you be ok?"
Jack simply nodded. "I'm here in Boston to meet family. I'm just meeting more family than I had originally thought."
"Are you ready to head back?"
Jack looked towards the house and then back at Rose before pulling her into a tight hug. "Just stay with me, ok?"
"Of course I will. There's nowhere else I'd rather be than by your side," Rose sighed, closing her eyes as she again enjoyed being so close to him. She pulled away and smiled, as her hands played with his soft as silk hair. "You jump, I jump."
"Right," Jack smiled, claiming her lips in a short kiss before taking her hand and leading the way back to the house.
"Is everything alright?" Charlotte asked, concerned. She knew that all this information must have sent Jack reeling.
"Everything's fine. I just needed some time to process everything. It's just that...when my folks died, I was alone. I never even dreamed that I had a brother," Jack explained.
"Tell me about it. I never even dreamed that I had any connection to the Dawson family," Alexander stood apart from everyone else, his emotions also were in an uproar. "I mean...I don't understand any of this. My father was Eric Dawson...but he never knew about me...and he had family in Wisconsin?"
"Oh my god, there's so much I have to tell you...and I still don't know about the Dawson's here…," Jack rambled, feeling overwhelmed again.
"Let's take it one thing at a time," Rose rubbed Jack's back, trying to be his rock, just like he had been hers so many times. "How about telling him about your father. Who he was, who you knew him to be."
Charlotte nodded. "Yeah. You can leave us other Dawsons to me. I know them best, but you know who Eric was…"
"Do I? I mean, I thought I knew Pa...but now...there's a part of him I know nothing about…"
"I must apologize," Daisy spoke up, feeling awful. She had been living a lie for so long and now it was all coming out. "I should have told the Dawsons of Alex's survival...of his existence...but I was afraid of…"
"Enid," Charlotte nearly growled. "God, if I couldn't hate that woman even more. Look, I understand why you didn't come to the family and tell us about Eric's son. Enid had terrorized and hurt you, nearly killed your unborn child, and sent Eric running away from it all. Who knew how she'd react if she knew that your child had survived...but let me assure you, Enid has no more power in the family. She's only at the mansion now because it'd please my grandfather, but my father detests her and would welcome you both, just like they welcomed Jack."
"How would she react now. That is what I'm worried about. We're not rich. We know nothing of that life…"
"And no offense, but I don't want anything to do with the Dawson fortune. My mother wasn't good enough to be a part of that family, well then neither am I," Alexander shook his head. He had sat through his mother's tale while his newly found brother had taken a break and he felt sad and angry on his mother's behalf. At this point, he wanted nothing to do with the Dawson family.
Rose and Jack both understood Alexander's reluctance to even introduce himself to the family. In fact, Jack was wondering if he had made a mistake in coming here. A part of him wished that Enid Dawson had never shown up on his doorstep and that he and Rose could remain blissfully happy in their simple lives in Chippewa Falls.
"Charlotte is right though. Her father is the patriarch now. Whatever power Enid had over the family seems to be gone," Jack sighed. "But...Enid has been horrid to Rose and I'm still mad over what she said about Lily...I'm still wondering if coming here was worth it."
"Of course it was, Jack. You learned that you weren't the last of your father after all. That you're not alone," Rose squeezed his hand. "And despite Enid...you do have a family that seems to care about you."
"I do hope that you'll change your mind about getting to know the rest of us, Alexander. I promise we're not bad. Jack here can vouch for us," Charlotte sighed, understanding the reluctance. "I do extend an invitation to an upcoming gala to welcome Jack, but he's not the only newcomer. You're new too."
"It'll cause a scandal," Daisy shook her head unhappily. "That's one thing that Enid abhors is a scandal."
"Tell me about it," Rose sighed, thinking of Enid's treatment of her.
"The family needs a good scandal if you ask me. Something to shake things up. Maybe it'll even take the heat off of Rose some."
"Can you do that? Just invite us like this?" Daisy questioned. She really had no interest in going to any gala, especially one held by the Dawsons, but she was curious how things may have changed for her former employers.
"Of course. We haven't sent out invitations yet, but I'll send you one once everything gets finalized. Everything is still in the planning stages, of course," Charlotte smiled. "I do hope that you two come. Jack can use the company, being the newcomer and all."
"We'll think about it," Daisy sighed, not at all sure about this. A part of her thought that it would be the right thing to do, introducing Alexander to the family she should have always been a part of. He would probably be accepted by most of them anyway, but it would also make him a target for Enid Dawson, and who knows what her reaction would be, to know that the child she had tried to kill, the child that had cost her Eric, had survived after all.
"I can't promise we'll show up," Alexander sighed, reluctant to take part in such an affair.
"Just give it some thought. We'd love to have both of Uncle Eric's sons back in the family. Not just one," Charlotte smiled. "And it'll be a chance for you to get to know each other."
"We'll see. That is all that I can promise," Alexander said, unwilling to commit to attending anything to do with a family that had rejected his mother.
