Amity's intro
Water. Earth. Fire. Air.
Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all four elements, could stop them, but when the world needed her most, she vanished. A hundred years passed, and me, Willow
and Gus discovered the new Avatar, an airbender named Luz. And although her airbending skills are great, she has a lot to learn before she's ready to save anyone.
But I believe Luz can save the world
The team is situated at the waterfall pond. Willow and Eda are surveying a map. Boscha is sitting with her feet in the water, moving it back and forth. Camila is skipping rocks across the pond. Luz and Gus are swimming while Amity is located at the top of the lake near the waterfall. Luz goes underwater for a moment and bends an ice cube around herself for amusement.
(Excitedly.) "Dive bomb! Yeah!" Amity yelled (Jumps into the water.)
The splash sends Luz and Gus out of the water, breaks her ice prison, and soaks Willow, Eda, Camila, Boscha and the maps which Willow tried to protect.
"Even though your not a waterbender, that was quite the dive you made, Amity" Gus said
(Sarcastically.) "Sure, five thousand year-old maps from the spirit library. Just splash some water on 'em." Willow said
"Sorry." Amity said [Wrings her hair dry as Eda bends the water off the map.)
"So, did you figure out what route we're going to take?" Luz asked
"Okay, we just got out of the desert, so we must be around here. And we need to go to Ba Sing Se, which is here. It looks like the only passage connecting the south to the north is this sliver of land called the Serpent's Pass." Willow said
"You sure that's the best way to go?" Boscha asked
"It's the only way. I mean, it's not like we have Appa to fly us there." Willow said
(Quietly.) "Shush up about Appa. Can't you at least try to be sensitive?" Camila asked
"Mom, it's okay. I know I was upset about losing Appa before, but I just want to focus on getting to Ba Sing Se and telling the Earth King about the solar eclipse." Luz said
(Surprised.) "Oh ... well, okay. I'm glad you're doing better." Camila said
"Then to Ba Sing Se we go. No more distractions." Eda said
Suddenly, three refugees arrive.
"Hello there, fellow refugees!" the first refugee said
"So, you guys are headed to Ba Sing Se, too?" Gus asked
"Sure are. I'm Than, and we're trying to get there before my wife Ying has her baby." Than said
"Great! We can travel through the Serpent's Pass together." Amity said
The three refugees look up in shock.
"The Serpent's Pass? Only the truly desperate take that deadly route!" Ying said
"Deadly route." (Punches Willow in the arm.) "Great pick, Sokka!" Boscha said
"Well, we are desperate." Willow said
"You should come with us to Full Moon Bay. Ferries take refugees across the lake. It's the fastest way to Ba Sing Se." Than said
"And it's hidden, so the Fire Nation can't find it." Ying said
"Hmm ... peaceful ferry ride or deadly pass?" Eda asked
At Full Moon Bay.
"I can't believe how many people's lives have been uprooted by the Fire Nation." Amity said
"We're all looking for a better life, safe behind the walls of Ba Sing Se." Than said
A ferry departs. Lilith and Kaldo are on board.
"Who would have thought after all these years, I'd return to the scene of my greatest military disgrace …" (Turns away for a second before turning back with a floral hat on his head.) "as a tourist!" Kaldo said
"Look around. We're not tourists, we're refugees." (Sips food and spits it out.) "Ugh! I'm sick of eating rotten food, sleeping in the dirt. I'm tired of living like this!" Lilith said
"Aren't we all? My name's Ket and these are my Freedom Fighters, Smellerbee and Longshot." Ket said
"Hey." Smellerbee said (Longshot nods.)
"Hello." Lilith said
"Here's the deal. I hear the captain's eating like a king while the refugees have to feed off his scraps. Doesn't seem fair, does it?" Ket asked
"What sort of king is he eating like?" Kaldo asked
"The fat, happy kind." (At this, Kaldo's mouth hangs open as he starts to drool behind his mask and it drips out.) "You want to help us 'liberate' some food?" Ket asked
(Tosses the bowl of rotten food into the water.) "I'm in." Lilith said
Ket smirks.
Back at the station.
"I told you already ... no vegetables on the ferry! One cabbage slug could destroy the entire ecosystem of Ba Sing Se! Security!" the Ticket Lady yelled
A platypus bear destroys the cabbage cart.
"Ahhh! My cabbages!" the Cabbage Merchant yelled (He is carried away.)
"Next!" the Ticket Lady yelled
"Um, six tickets for the ferry to Ba Sing Se, please." Luz said
"Passports?" the Ticket Lady asked
"Uh ... no one told us we had to have passports." Luz said
"Don't you know who this is? She's the Avatar!" Willow said
"Ah, I see fifty Avatars a day and, by the way, not a very impressive costume." (The screen pans to show several impostors, notices King.) "Besides, no animals allowed. Do I need to call security?" the Ticket Lady asked
The platypus bear chomps down on the cabbage. King hides in fear.
"That won't be necessary." Luz said
"Next!" the Ticket Lady yelled
"I'll take care of this. My name is Boscha Beifong, and I'll need six tickets." Boscha said (Presents her passport.)
"Ah, the golden seal of the flying boar! It is my pleasure to help anyone of the Beifong family." the Ticket Lady said
"It is your pleasure. As you can see, I'm the daughter of them and these five imbeciles are my valets." Boscha said (Sweeps her arm behind her, presenting her friends to the hesitant clerk.)
"But, the animal-" the Ticket Lady didn't get to say
"-is my hearing-ear demon dog." Boscha said
"Well, normally it's only one ticket per passport, but this document is so official ... I guess it's worth six tickets." the Ticket Lady said (Stamps an approval seal on the tickets.)
"Thank you very much." Boscha said
"All right, we scammed that lady good!" Willow said
Suddenly, a gargoyle security guard, actually Zora without makeup, grabs Willow.
"Tickets and passports please." Zora said
"Is there a problem?" Willow asked
"Yeah, I have a problem with you! I've seen your type before. Probably sarcastic, think you're hilarious and let me guess, you're traveling with the Avatar." Zora said
(Walks over.) "Do we know you?" Gus asked
"You mean you don't remember? Maybe you'll remember this!" Zora said (Kisses Gus on the cheek.)
"Zora!" Gus said (Embraces her as Zora drops Willow.)
"Zora, it's good to see you!" Zora said
Later, in a different location of the station. The gang and Zora talk.
"You look so different without your makeup! And the new outfit." Amity said
"That crabby lady makes all the security guards wear them. And look at you, sleeveless guy. Been working out?" Zora asked
"Ahhh, I'll grab a tree branch and do a few chin touches every now and then. Nothing major." Gus said
"Are the other Kyoshi Warriors around?" Luz asked
"Yeah. After you left Kyoshi, we wanted to find a way to help people. We ended up escorting some refugees and we've been here ever since." (King jumps up next to her.) "Hi, King! Good to see you too!" (Scratches his head near his horn.) "So why are you guys getting tickets for the ferry? Wouldn't you just fly across on Appa?" Zora asked
"Appa is missing. We hope to find him in Ba Sing Se." Camila said
"I'm so sorry to hear that." (To Luz.) "Are you doing okay?" Zora asked
"I'm doing fine. Would everybody stop worrying about me?" Luz asked
"Avatar Luz, you have to help us! Someone took all of our belongings, our passports, our tickets, everything's gone!" Ying said
"I'll talk to the lady for you." Luz said
Back at the desk.
"No passports, no tickets!" the Ticket Lady said (Stamps a "denied" stamp on Luz's forehead.)
"But she's pregnant and all of her stuff was stolen! You have to make an exception!" Luz said
"No exceptions! If I just gave away tickets willy-nilly to anyone, there would be no more order! You know what that means, no more civilization!" the Ticket Lady yelled
"What if we gave them our tickets?" Luz asked
"No!" the Ticket Lady said
"But …" Luz didn't get to say
"Next!" the Ticket Lady yelled
"Don't worry, you'll get to the city safely. I'll lead you through the Serpent's Pass." Luz said
Moments later.
"I can't believe we gave up our tickets and now we're going through the Serpent's Pass." Willow said
"I can't believe you're still complaining about it." Boscha said
(In her normal Kyoshi Warrior attire.) "I'm coming too!" Zora said
"Are you sure that's a good idea?" Gus asked
"Gus, I thought you'd want me to come." Zora said
"I do, it's just–" Gus started
"Just what?" Zora asked
"Nothing. I'm glad you're coming." Gus said
Outside, at the pass.
"This is the Serpent's Pass? I thought it would be a little more wind-y, you know, like a serpent. Huh, I guess they misnamed it." Willow said
"Look at this writing! How awful!" Ying said
"What does it say?" Boscha asked
"It says, 'abandon hope'." Amity said
"How can we abandon hope? It's all we have!" Ying said
"I don't know. The monks used to say that hope was just a distraction, so maybe we do need to abandon it." Luz said
"What are you talking about?" Eda asked
"Hope is not going to get us into Ba Sing Se and it's not going to help find Appa. We need to focus on what we're doing right now and that's getting across this path." Luz said
"Okay, if you say so." Eda said
Within the pass.
"The Fire Nation controls the western lake. Rumor has it they're working on something big on the other side of it and don't want anyone to find out what it is." Zora said
They all pass by a sailing Fire Nation ship. A part of the rock gives out, causing Than to fall. Boscha stops it from falling and lifts him back up with earthbending.
"I'm okay!" Than said (The rock falls to the water, which the Fire Nation ship notices. It fires.)
"They've spotted us! Let's go, let's go!" Camila shouted
Luz gets on her glider and deflects the fireball back. Another fireball hits the mountain, causing several pieces of rock over Zora to fall. Gus pushes her out of the way. Willow bends out a part of the mountain to keep the rocks from falling on Gus.
"Zora, are you okay? You have to be more careful! Come on!" Gus said
(Pretending to be Gus.) "'Thanks for saving my life, Willow.' Hey, no problem, Sokka. You little worry wart" Willow said
Hours later, at sunset, the travelers set up their camp. Gus approaches Zora.
"Zora, you shouldn't sleep there. Who knows how stable this ledge is, it could give away at any moment!" Gus said (Moves her sleeping bag.)
"Gus, I'm fine, stop worrying!" Zora said
"You're right, you're right, you're perfectly capable of taking care of yourself! Wait! Oh, never mind, I thought I saw a spider, but, you're fine." Gus said
Back on the ferry. Lilith, Ket, and Smellerbee sneak up to the food storage area. Ket breaks the door open with his twin tiger hook swords, and he and Lilith take some food.
"Guard's coming!" Smellerbee said
Longshot fires an arrow with a rope attached to it, allowing the three to slide down it. Longshot pulls it away before the guard notices. Back at the pass, Luz is standing at the edge of the rock, looking out at the ocean, blankly. Amity approaches her.
"You know, it's okay to miss Appa." (Luz remains silent.) "What's going on with you? In the desert, all you cared about was finding Appa and now it's like you don't care about him at all." Amity said
"You saw what I did out there. I was so angry about losing Appa that I couldn't control myself. I hated feeling like that." Luz said
"But now you're not letting yourself feel anything. I know sometimes it hurts more to hope and it hurts more to care. But you have to promise me that you won't stop caring." (Holds out her arms.) "Come on, you need a hug." Amity said
(Bows before her.) "Thank you for your concern, Amity." Luz said (Exits.)
Amity shows visible concern.
In another part of the Pass, Gus stands by himself, until Zora approaches.
"It's a beautiful moon." Zora said
"Yeah, it really is." Gus said
"Look, I know you're just trying to help, but I can take care of myself." Zora said
"I know you can." Gus said
"Then why are you acting so overprotective?" Zora asked
"It's so hard to lose someone you care about. Something happened at the North Pole and I couldn't protect someone. I don't want anything like that to ever happen again." Gus said
"I lost someone I care about. He didn't die, he just went away. I only had a few days to get to know him, but he was smart, brave and funny …" Zora said
(Jealous.) "Who is this guy? Is he taller than me?" Gus asked
"No, he's about your height." Zora said
"Is he better-looking?" Gus asked
"It is you, stupid!" Zora said
"Oh!" Gus said
The two prepare to kiss, but Gus pulls back at the last moment.
"I can't." Gus said
"I'm sorry." Zora said
"No, you shouldn't be." Gus said (Exits.)
Back on the ferry. Ket passes out food to other travelers. The other Freedom Fighters, Lilith, and Kaldo sit together.
"So, Smellerbee. That's an unusual name for a young man." Kaldo said
"Maybe it's because I'm not a man ... I'm a girl!" Smellerbee said (Walks away.)
(Calling out to her.) "Oh, now I see. It's a beautiful name for a lovely girl!" Kaldo said
Longshot approaches Smellerbee and gestures at her.
"I know, you're right. As long as I'm confident with who I am, it doesn't matter what other people think. Thanks, Longshot." Smellerbee said
Longshot nods at her. Ket approaches Lilith and Kaldo.
"From what I heard, people eat like this every night in Ba Sing Se. I can't wait to set my eyes on that giant wall." Ket said
"It is a magnificent sight." Kaldo said
"So you've been there before?" Ket asked
"Once. When I was a ... different man." Kaldo said
"I've done some things in my past that I'm not proud of, but that's why I'm going to Ba Sing Se, for a new beginning. A second chance." Ket said
"That's very noble of you. I believe people can change their lives if they want to. I believe in second chances." Kaldo said
Back at the Serpent's Pass. The travelers notice that a section of the pass is below the sea level, and not able to be navigated.
"Everyone single file!" (She divides the water, allowing everyone to walk through the drowned out path.) "Luz, I need help!" Eda said (Luz helps by creating an air bubble.)
King's curiosity is aroused by the fish. He dives in the water, only to return back when he sees a large shadow. The rest of them notice.
"What is that thing?" Amity asked
The shadow breaks through the water, breaking the divide. Willow and Boscha quickly use their earthbending to raise the ground they are standing on above the water. The shadow is actually a large serpent, which appears from the water with a shriek.
"I think I just figured out why they call it the Serpent's Pass! Zora, you know about giant sea monsters, make it go away!" Gus said
"Just because I live near the unagi doesn't mean I'm an expert!" Zora said
(Holds up King.] "Oh great and powerful sea serpent, please accept this humble and tasty offering. Thank you." Willow said
"Willow!" Amity said
(Blasts the Serpent back with a burst of air.) "I'll distract it. Gus, you and Eda get everyone across!" Luz said (Takes off on her glider.)
Gus and Eda freezes the water to create an ice trail. Everyone except for Boscha crosses. Gus and Eda try to ice up the serpent, but it fails.
"Boscha, come on, it's just ice!" Camila said
(Feels the ice but her third eye is restricted from it.) "Actually, I'm going to stay on my little island, where I can see through my third eye!" (The serpent takes out half the island.) "Okay, I'm coming!" Boscha said in panic (Slowly crosses the ice.)
"You're doing great! Just follow the sound of my voice!" Willow yelled
"It's hard to ignore, and I'm not using my third eye at the moment." Boscha said
"You're almost there!" Willow yelled
The serpent slams down the ice trail, dropping Boscha into a struggle to stay above water.
"Help! I can't swim!" Boscha shouted
"I'm coming, Boscha!" Gus yelled
Before he can do anything, Zora jumps in for the save.
"Help!" Boscha shouted
Boscha falls below the water, but Zora pulls her up before she drowns.
(Thinking it is Gus from her eyes being closed due to water over her face.) "Oh Gus, you saved me!" Boscha said (Kisses Zora on the cheek.)
"Actually, it's me." Zora said
"Oh ... well …" (Chuckles. Embarrassed.) "You can go ahead and let me drown now." Boscha said
Meanwhile, the serpent is caught in a whirlpool created by Luz and Eda. The force of it slams the serpent into the mountain, causing it to fall back below water. Upon seeing the two return, the rest of the travelers cheer. Moments later, near Ba Sing Se's wall.
"There's the wall! Now it's nothing but smooth sailing to Ba Sing Se." Amity said
(Groans in pain.) "Oh no!" Ying said
"What's wrong?" Eda asked
"The baby's coming!" Ying shouted
(Panicked.) "What? Now? Can't you hold it in or something?" Willow asked in panic
"Willow, calm down. I helped Gus' Gran-Gran deliver lots of babies back home." Amity said
"This isn't the same as delivering an arctic seal! This is a real ... human ... thing!" Willow yelled
"It's called a baby and I helped her deliver plenty of those, too. Luz, get some rags. Gus, water. Boscha, with Willow in panic, I need you to make an earth tent, a big one." (Boscha earthbends the rock to form a tent.) "Zora, come with me." Amity said
Back on the ferry. Ket approaches Lilith.
"You know, as soon as I saw your scar, I knew exactly who you were. You're an outcast, like me. And us outcasts have to stick together. We have to watch each other's backs. Because no one else will." Ket said
"I've realized lately that being on your own isn't always the best path." Lilith said
The ferry closes in on the walls.
Back at the pass. Ying is breathing heavily as the baby delivery continues.
"You're doing great, Ying. Gus, where's that water? Now get ready to push. One ... two ... (Gus enters with Willow following behind while biting her nails.) "... three, push!" Amity said
Ying groans, Willow passes out. Moments later, the baby arrives and begins to cry. Luz, Gus, Willow, Eda, Camila and Boscha are all outside the tent.
(From inside the tent.) "It's a girl!" Amity said
"So, you want to go see the baby, or are you going to faint like an old lady again?" Boscha asked
"No, no, I'm good this time." Willow said (Gus, Willow, Eda, Camila and Boscha enter the tent.)
"Luz, you have to come see this." Amity said
Luz enters to see the new life.
"She sounds healthy." Boscha said
"She's beautiful." Camila said
"It's so ... squishy looking." Willow said
Luz begins to smile.
"What should we name her?" Than asked
"I want our daughter's name to be unique. I want it to mean something." Ying said
(Sheds some tears.) "I've been going through a really hard time lately. But you've made me ... hopeful again." Luz said
"I know what I want to name our baby now. Hope." Ying said
"That's a perfect name. Hope." Than said
Outside the tent. Luz meets with Amity. Gus, Willow, Eda, Camila, Boscha and Zora stand next to the tent.
"I thought I was trying to be strong. But really I was just running away from my feelings. Seeing this family together, so full of happiness and love, it reminded me how I feel about Appa ... and how I feel about you." Luz said
Amity sheds some tears. Luz and Amity embrace, Amity's eyes still watering. The other six approach.
"I promise, I'll find Appa as fast as I can. I just really need to do this." Luz said
"See you in the big city." Willow said
"Say hi to that big fuzzball for me." Boscha said (Punches Luz in the arm.)
"You'll find him, Luz." Amity said
"I know. Thank you, Amity. You ready, King?" Luz asked (Luz and King fly off. The rest wave goodbye.)
Zora approaches Gus.
"Gus, it's been really great to see you again." Zora said
"Whoa, hold on. Why does it sound like you're saying goodbye?" Gus asked
"I came along because I wanted to make sure you got through the Serpent's Pass safely. But now I need to get back to the other Kyoshi Warriors." Zora said
"So you came along to protect me?" Gus asked
"Listen, I'm really sorry about last night. We were talking ... and saying things ... and I just got carried away and before I knew it -" Zora didn't finish
(Kisses Zora.) "You talk too much." Gus said
The two share a deep kiss. Luz and King fly to the top of the Outer Wall of Ba Sing Se. However, Luz quickly notices a large drill with a Fire Nation insignia, heading for the wall.
"Sorry King, Appa's going to have to wait." Luz said
