I don't own Twilight. What I own is my character's behavior, personality, background, and plot of the story.
Thanks to my Beta MadMooey18 for her continuous help, support, and love.
Bella holds her mum's hand as they walk around the supermarket. She would rather be home filming the bugs in their backyard, dancing in her tutu or playing dress up in her mummy's closet but mummy doesn't like that. She thinks Bella spends too much time filming nonsense, and that dancing is useless. The last time she left her behind Bella locked the nanny in the laundry room during a game of hide and seek then tried on her mummy's make up.
She had so much fun until mummy had to come and spoil it for her. Since then, her mummy tries to take her with her wherever she goes, unless it's work. After much complaining and whining on Bella's part, her mummy finally allows her to wander around in the supermarket on her own as long as she meets her back at the cashier in five minutes. She is a big girl and knows how to read the clock. Plus, her clock has an alarm that her mummy sets so she can know when she needs to meet her, or else she will forget and keep looking around at all the pretty things.
Happy, Bella skips away from her mum towards the candy section. She is not allowed to have any. Her mummy says that she is like Roadrunner in the cartoons and candy makes her even more skippy than normal, but the candy looks so pretty and they are colorful. She loves looking at them, and as she stares at them she sees a boy, hiding behind a corner. His hair looks pretty and colored like pennies so naturally she wants it and decides to ask him if they could trade their hair.
She follows him and watches as he darts into the back of the store. Her watch rings and she looks at it and realizes that the five minutes are up. She looks between where the boy ran, and the other direction and decides to follow the boy. She knows that her mummy will be angry at her for being away too long, but his hair is so pretty. She has to get him to trade her hair with him. She squares her shoulder and marches behind him like she saw soldiers in a movie do because it's more fun than walking like a normal person.
"Hi," she tells him, waving her hands then she puts both her hands behind her back and swings side to side as she stares at him expectantly.
He waves at her then asks "There is a big fridge bigger than my mum's closet that we can walk in, do you want to walk with me?" Her smile is so wide, and she is the first girl who wants to talk to him. Most girls think that boys have cooties. Most boys think that too, but not Edward, he is too smart to believe that stupidity. Maybe this girl is as smart as him.
She nods her head at him and follows him but instead of walking she jumps behind him which makes him laugh. She laughs as he laughs at her and Edward decides that jumping is fun and he starts jumping with her. They giggle together as they jump into the fridge.
She looks around in wonder as she finds rows of colorful candy. More candy than she has ever seen in her entire life. She walks slowly as she looks at all of them feeling gleeful. They are so pretty and colorful. She feels so happy that she does a spin then jumps in the air in excitement.
"I like your hair," she tells him and then squints her eyes to see really well.
"I like yours, too," he tells her, shrugging his shoulders. Bella starts clapping her hands and jumping up and down in excitement. This is turning out better than she expected.
"Can we switch our hair? You can have mine and then I will have yours," she tells him as she holds her hands behind her back and swings left and right.
"I don't think that is possible," he tells her, finding her suggestion strange. Maybe she isn't as smart as he thought. Maybe she is crazy.
"Yes we can. Grandma tells me that all the time. She would never lie. She loves my hair, but I don't like hers. That is why we haven't switched our hair yet. But I like your hair and you like mine so we can do it," she tells him in a serious tone. Edward finds what she tells him unbelievable, but she looks so serious and she doesn't seem like someone who lies, so he believes her.
Edward opens his mouth ready to ask her how they could do that, when they hear the loud sound of her mum yelling, "Bella, where are you?"
Bella's mouth forms an O as she remembers the promise she made to her mum. She will definitely be angry if Bella doesn't get to her soon.
Bella rushes and hugs Edward who is surprised by that and then runs out but not before she yells, "Don't forget about the hair."
"But how?" he asks, still confused by what she wants.
"I will tell you when I see you," she replies running away.
"You don't even know my name," he says to no one since she is no longer within his hearing range.
He plays around in the fridge for sometime before he gets bored and goes outside to his mum's office in the supermarket. His mum has the biggest office, because it's the only one in the supermarket. When he asked her why, she told him that it was because she owns the supermarket. He doesn't understand what his mummy would need such a big office for, but since his mummy keeps a lot of toys in her office for him, he doesn't complain. Maybe the next time the hair girl comes in, he will get her to play in the office with him.
Edward drags his feet in the ground as he follows his mummy to the car. Today is the first day of school and he doesn't want to go. He is happy enough wandering around in his mum's shop, playing in the giant fridge, and looking at the pretty pictures in his daddy's books, but his mummy is having none of it. He tried to tell her that he will learn from his daddy's books, but when his mummy found out that he was snooping through his father's comic books collection, she got angry at his dad. Since then, he hasn't been able to find them.
"Edward, we don't have all day. I need to get to the shop on time," his mummy tells him.
"Fine," he huffs as he gets in the car and lets his mummy buckle him in his seat. He watches the changing leaves of the trees through the window, and feels change coming but doesn't understand what he is feeling. All he knows is that he is about to embark on new things, and he doesn't know what those new things are.
His mummy parks the car and he unbuckles himself and gets out of the car once she opens the door for him. He walks towards the gate and brushes his mummy's hand away. He wants to walk alone. He is a big boy. He doesn't need his mummy to hold his hand.
He looks around as he marches two steps ahead of his mummy. There are six swings. There are four slides, and there are five see-saws. He doesn't know how many classmates he will have so he is not sure if he will fight other kids for his spot or if there are enough ones for everyone. He is not big. He has seen kids his age bigger than him, but he hasn't met someone his age who is smarter, so he will make up for his lack of strength with his brains. That is what his daddy tells him anyways.
He is walking along minding his own business when something small hits him, hard. He feels arms wrap around him and realizes that it's the hair girl. He knows her name starts with a B since he heard a lady calling her, but he can't remember.
"See, I told you that we would see each other," the hair girl tells him as she steps back and gives him a knowing smile with her hands behind her back. He looks at her as she stands in front of him with her hair in two braids and notices her very interesting style. She is wearing bright red shoes, a red and white pleated skirt, a blue sleeveless button down shirt and blue hair ties. Standing in front of her he felt under dressed like the start of the year is a big occasion he needs to dress up for, which is an alien feeling to him because he is a boy. He doesn't care about what he wears.
"Who is your friend Eddie?" his mum asks him, pulling him out of his thoughts. He looks up and finds her staring expectantly at him with a soft smile on her lips. His mummy is always smiling.
He opens his mouth to answer but realizes he doesn't know her name, but thankfully she comes to his rescue.
"My name is Bella ma'am," she replies then sticks her hand out for a hand shake.
"My, you are well dressed and you have great manners. I like you, Bella," his mummy says as she shakes Bella's hands.
"Really, I picked them myself," Bella replies excitedly and claps her hands happily once her hands are free from the handshake.
His mummy asks Bella a couple of questions and Bella answers all of them excitedly, which pisses Edward off. Partly because his mummy is getting to know his friend before him, and partly because it is a school day and his mummy should be taking him to class not making friends with other children.
As he thinks that to himself, he hears the sound of the same lady who called Bella in the supermarket call her again. He looks around and spots her so he waves his arms around to catch her attention since his mummy and Bella are too busy chatting to notice her.
"Bella, how many times have I told you not to go far with me around," her mum says to her then turns to his mummy and says, "I am sorry. Was she annoying you? If she was, I apologize. My daughter can be a tad bit enthusiastic at times."
"I wasn't," Bella replies, pouting her lips.
Her mummy ignores that and looks at his mummy expectantly. "Oh no, she wasn't. As a matter of fact I was just complimenting her outfit. I think you have raised an exceptionally sweet and well mannered girl," his mummy replies.
Her mummy lets out a sigh of relief and smiles brightly at his mummy. "You have no idea how much your comment made my day. Bella tends to be a lot and I say this in the most loving way. While her father and I don't mind her behavior in the slightest, most parents we have met expect her to behave like an adult and are extremely hurtful when she does something unusual."
"Oh no, we were just discussing her clothing choices. She is impeccably dressed. By the way, I am Esme Cullen and this is Edward," his mummy tells her, thrusting her hand toward Bella's mummy's hand.
"I am Renee Swan and as you probably know, this is Bella," Bella's mummy states as she shakes his mum's hand then places her hands on Bella's shoulders. For a moment, Edward wonders if that is Miss Renee's way of making sure Bella doesn't run away, but then Bella asks him a question and he forgets that thought.
Both mummy's keep chatting as they lead their kids to their classroom. It turns out that Bella and Edward are going to be in the same class which makes Bella so happy that she hugs him and laughs excitedly. She drags him to the first seat in the row as she chats excitedly about how much fun they will have.
"So I asked my mummy if we can switch hair but she said we can't. I was sad for a little bit about it because the color of your hair is so pretty and so soft," she tells him as she pats his hair, "but your hair is very short and mine is longer, so I guess it's not so bad," Bella tells him then turns to face the front of the classroom as if the teacher will start teaching them any moment.
The sound of a coloring pencil rubbing a piece of paper invades his ear as he concentrates on the picture in front of him. He hears the sound of snapping and looks up a moment later to find Bella aggressively sharpening the red coloring pencil in her hand that she just snapped. He looks at her picture and compares it to his. Both of them are methodical in their color. While most kids color outside the line, he and Bella don't.
That is where their similarities end. While his color choices are practical and his coloring is muted, hers looks like a rainbow explosion. Her colors are bright and lively. She pairs the most outrageous colors together, but she somehow makes it work. Her coloring looks amazing. It's almost like she knows that he is staring at her as she raises her head and looks at him.
She smiles at him then glances at his painting. "I like it. It's not like how I color but it looks pretty. It looks real," she tells him.
"You can have it once I am done coloring, if you want," he tells her. He doesn't know why he does that, but he feels like he wants to give her something she will like. She beams at him, her eyes twinkling before she goes to the bin and theatrically dumps the sharpening of her coloring pencils then runs back to sit beside him and goes back to coloring. He stares at her for a minute before he too returns to his picture.
Once done they show their pictures to the teacher who walks around looking at everyone's work. She smiles and nods at both of them and gives each of them a start sticker which makes them smile at each other and do a high five.
A couple of minutes after that the bell rings signaling the end of the Art period and the beginning of recess. Both Bella and Edward get up together quickly because they want to get to the swings before everyone else does.
They run until they reach them but they only find one empty with the rest having other kids playing on them. "You can have it first. I'll push you," Bella tells him, pushing the chains of the swing towards him.
"I am a boy. I can push myself. Girls don't push boys," he tells her as he sits on the swing.
"And I am a girl and daddy says that girls are as capable as boys are so your reasoning is stupid," she pauses for a second to hold the chains of the swing and pull them back then says, "Get ready I'm about to push," then she pushes with all of her might.
He raises his feet to allow her to push and feels her pull the chains of the swings back again before she pushes for a second time. They spend the next five minutes like that with both of them laughing. Every time he hits a high spot but that is until a large looming figure holds the chains of the swing and stops it.
"Get off, I want to play," James tells him.
"I won't. We came here first," Edward tells him defiantly to which Bella crosses her arms against her chest and hums in agreement.
"Leave, Jimmy, we came here first," Bella tells him as she steps forward and gets in his face. She knows this boy. He is her next door neighbor. Normally he is nice, but when his friends are around he becomes cruel to her. She looks behind him and finds two of his friends laughing at her just like she expected. Her daddy explained it to her. Boys like to be cruel to impress their friends. When he told her that, she thought that it was stupid, but then she never expected Jamie to be the smartest person on planet earth, so she wasn't surprised.
"I don't care, I want to play and you will get off the swings or I will beat you," Jimmy threatens them, slapping his closed left fist into the palm of his right hand.
"No can do," Bella tells him, taking another step forward.
"Who's gonna stop me?" he asks her then points at Edward and says, "Him?" He slaps his fisted hand against his open palm again threateningly.
"No, because unlike you, he is too nice to do it." She is cut off by James who snorts and barks a laugh. "That said I will go to my daddy who is a policeman and tell him that you beat us up and he will put you in jail," she tells him, taking another step towards him and looking unimpressed by him.
She knows that her daddy can't do so. She isn't stupid. Kids don't go to jail, but Jimmy doesn't know that. His mummy threatens him with the police whenever he misbehaves. They are neighbors. Whenever he breaks something, she hears his mummy yelling at him.
James stares at her for a couple of seconds before he mutters, "Snitch," and turns around and leaves. She smiles happy that she got him to leave them alone and turns towards Edward expecting him to be smiling too but is disappointed when he isn't.
"What's wrong?" she asks, looking concerned. She wonders if Jimmy somehow managed to hit him without her noticing.
"Now he is going to tell everyone that we are snitches," he mutters to her looking angry.
"So what?" she asks him, not seeing what the problem is. At least he didn't hit them or take their turn on the wing. That is what matters, right?
"People hate snitches," he tells her like it's supposed to be obvious.
"Not as much as they hate bullies," Bella replies.
Edward shakes his head in disagreement with her.
"Well that is stupid because being a bully is worse than snitching, so only stupid people hate snitches more than bullies," she replies, not happy with his statement. She doesn't understand why he thinks that she should care about what people think of her. She doesn't want to care and he isn't helping her by reminding her of people's opinion.
"It is stupid but for some reason that's how things are," he tells her shrugging his shoulders. He has never given much thought to why snitching is bad. Maybe he will ask his parents. His daddy is a scientist, and his mummy is a business manager and owner of a supermarket. Both of them are smart people so they will probably know the answer.
Edward gets off the swings and motions for Bella to get on. She does so silently while looking deep in thought. Right as he is about to ask her what she is thinking of, she turns towards him and says, "I think I know why people think snitching is bad. Bullies came up with this idea because if they bullied someone and he told on them, they will get in trouble, but if that someone doesn't, they will harm someone else and again get away with it. To make everyone believe that they shouldn't tell on them for doing the wrong thing, they say that snitching is bad."
Edward pauses for a second before he starts pushing again and tells her, "Makes sense," then he pushes her a couple of times before he says, "You know, Bella. You are really smart."
Bella nods her head at him absentmindedly looking in the distance. Years down the line she will look back at this moment and realize its significance. It is this very moment that teaches her that the world is ruled by bullies and not nice people. If she wants to do what she wants to, she needs to make sure bullies don't want to bully her. It will take her over ten years to realize how she can do that. And ten more to realize that even if she appears like someone you don't want to mess with, there will always be a bully that is stupid enough to try.
