The sounds of the chilling winds blew against Red Hat's face, as he stared off into a large open field. The area had a huge lake with the land mostly filled with grass. The ground felt murky from the occasional rain fall in the area, so he would assume. He assumes this kind of place was a marshland of sorts. Although, why was he here?
'Is this a dream?' He thought as he explored a bit of the marshland. As he got closer to the lake. He noticed various huts around the lands. 'Anyone live here? I though this way of living was abandoned...' He observed. He suddenly felt a strong gust of wind. Holding onto his hat he turned around behind him and took notice of the large creature that was staring down at him. It was a large green falcon with red eyes and wore spike armor around its front torso. He took a couple steps back, maintaining his ground. Refusing to show fear to this creature.
The falcon let out a cry, but didn't attack. It merely took a close look at Red Hat. This left him confused. Was it going to attack him or not? How can a falcon be this big? Did it belong to someone in this place? He had so many questions which no general answer.
The falcon sat in place as a person dismounted from it. This person was none other than Winda, Priestess of Gusto; wearing the same clothing she normally wears and carrying her usual staff. She looked at him like he grew a second hair and waved at him.
"Didn't expect you to come here of all places. Nice to meet you too." Winda greeted him, walking up to him.
Red Hat rubbed his eyes, believing he completely lost it. "Am I dreaming? How do you know me? What is this place I'm in?"
Winda giggled at his expense. "Didn't anyone tell you that you ask too many questions? This is no dream. Welcome to the duel monsters spirit realm!"
"Duel Monsters spirit realm?" He repeated, finding it hard to believe he was in a realm separate from his own. "Just what is going on here? Last thing I remember was falling asleep in my room."
Winda lightly tapped on his shoulder. "You've been transported to the Duel Monster's spirit realm. Usually, a being will transport their spirit into this realm for a short time. You are currently unconscious in your room. Your spirit is in this realm."
Red Hat took in what she just explained. His main body was back in his room, yet his spirit was in this realm? How was that possible? For the longest time, he found this sort of detail to be ridiculous. Yet, here was, standing right in front of two duel monster spirits. One of them being the very card he's using for the time being. But wait, did this mean his other dream he had was also part of this realm?
"Something the matter?" Winda narrowed her eyes at him. "Your face tells me; you've been here before."
Red Hat eyes widened. How did she figure out he's been to such a place before? "If it amounts to anything. My first experience with such a phenomenon, is when I explored a graveyard. That graveyard is where I found a Skull Servant. King of the Skull Servants to be more precise."
Winda had a confused look on her face. "The King of the Skull Servants himself? That's rather new, since the king very rarely meets with anyone, let alone bring someone into this realm. What did he say to you?"
Red Hat turned his back to her as he tried to remember what he said. "If I recall correctly, he mentioned I should leave a girl alone. He mentioned I knew the master, but I don't even know what that master is. After that, he attacked me then I happened to wake up, believing to be a dream."
That got Winda's attention. "The master? I think he means Zombie Master. The one who originally revived him and many others of the undead."
"Zombie Master?" Red Hat questioned. "Besides reviving zombies, what does he even do in the first place?"
Winda sighed. "The master is a malevolent spirit. He revives the undead for his own goals of conquest. Some of the undead rand free while others either joined or rejected his control. King of the Skull Servant hates Zombie Master and what he is doing."
"So, that's why... I don't I ever met the master. So, he assumes I'm working for or following Zombie Master." He replied.
"Stay away from a girl? You wouldn't happen to know this girl you just mentioned, would you? If so, then that can only mean the King of the Skull Servants must have grown fond of this girl and he dislikes it when those he protects are threaten in anyway."
"The girl that uses Skull Servants is named Lara. I took in with me after we escaped from a hell hole of a city." He answered. "I did my best to protect her and give her better care she really deserves."
"So that's the reason? Escape from tyranny... reminds me of some battles from long ago..." Winda said solemnly. "Guess that means, King of the Skull Servants doesn't fully trust you."
Red Hat raised an eye brow. Why did her mood suddenly change? Did something happen to her or someone else? "It's not my place to ask, but what happened long ago? I'm just curious is all."
Wind shook her head and snapped out of it. "It's nothing you should concern yourself with. I'm sure you'll figure out the story soon."
"Just what do you mean by that?" He asked again, hoping he wasn't pushing his luck. "Just what is Zombie Master is up to if the King of the Skull Servants distrust me so?"
"I think you said enough." Winda replied. "I expect you to learn the story of some our history. You have a lot to learn, Mr..."
Red Hat's eyes widened. How did she know his actual name? The same name he has long stopped using. "Wait! How do you know my name?!" As soon as he asked that. Winda began to leave and headed to her hut. Eventually he was knocked out once again.
He immediately woke up in a gasp, sitting straight and grasped his head, panting. Was that another dream? No, it was far too real to be a dream. If what the spirit said was true, then does that means there was other realms besides the world he lives in? Just what crazy messed up world does he live in?
He stood up and looked around his room. He took a peek through his window and notice the sun had yet to fully rise. He looked at the floor and found that Lara was still sleeping peacefully with a smile on her face. He smiled, knowing Lara was safe and sound. It warmed his heart knowing this poor girl is being taken care off, even if it would cost him so much. Although, this didn't change his current situation.
Now that he was living with Lara. This meant that Sector Security was now going to hunt them down. Since they were no longer in Satellite, they were going to search to New Domino City for them. This also meant they would have to be in hiding for the time being, until they somehow forget their existence. It sounded ludicrous to him, but that was the best he got. He would also have to buy new clothing for the both of them and actual food for Lara. Since, there was no way he was going to allow Lara to live off instant ramen or cheap foods. He wanted her to have best quality of living he could give her at the moment.
'I'm going to wash the wet clothes early. Hopefully they dry in a couple of hours...' He thought as he took his things and began washing his and Lara's clothes inside the restroom. 'This will take a while...'
Once he finished washing their clothes, he went outside to his backyard and hung the clothes on a wire which were connected by two wooden poles. Despite this being unnecessary to most people. Red Hat never obtained an actual dryer or a washing machine. Forcing him to wash clothes manually by hand and with older tools. Once he hanged the clothes and made sure they were facing the direction of the sun.
As he was about to enter his home to sleep in once more. 'Busy once more are you?'
He turned around, only to be shocked at what he saw. "What the... Winda?"
The spirit smiled and waved at him. 'Surprised, are you? Being able to see spirits?'
Red Hat sat down and stared at the spirit in disbelief. "You're saying I can see duel monster spirits? Does that mean I can communicate with spirits? Does this mean the times I heard and seen you, wasn't a hallucination?"
Winda shook her head and smiled. 'What you see and hear is very much real. Hard to believe in spirits? In that regard, I don't blame you. Very few people can see spirits. You have the power to communicate with spirits.'
"Power?" Red Hat questioned. "What do you mean by, I have the power to communicate with spirits? Does this mean I was able to communicate with them all along? If so, then why now can I do that, if I was unable to before?"
'This isn't something one figures out overnight. Some people that can communicate with spirits takes them years to actually be able to. Even to those that are born with the power to communicate with spirits.' Winda explained. 'That girl in your room, the spirits protect her, despite the fact she isn't aware of it.'
This got Red Hat's attention. "You mean to say, the King of the Skull Servants protects Lara? But, how come she isn't aware of it?'
'Again, not everyone can simply communicate with spirits.' She repeated. 'To some, they aren't even aware that their duel spirit partner is watching over them. In some cases, they can only do so in their so-called dreams.'
"You mean to say, you have been watching over me?" He asked once more.
'That would be correct...' She answered. 'The price of freedom is eternal vigilance. This is something you must understand. Never give up freedom for security. It never ends well for anyone.'
"I see... thanks for helping me out, Winda..." He thanked before heading back inside and laid down on his bed. Where he would fall sleep once again.
Winda smiled at him. 'You are a strange young man, yet also stubborn.' She disappeared and returned to her own realm.
Later that Morning
Lara would soon wake up from her slumber. She yawns and stretched her arms and legs. She took a look at her surroundings and noticed she was in a very small room, with a bathroom nearby. Next to her was a bed, which was just barely enough to fit two people. Near the closet was a what appeared to be an old fashion computer. She barely had time to register her surroundings when she came in here last night.
She took noticed that Red Hat was still sleeping. She even took notice that he slept with his red cap on. She knew he'd always sleep with that cap on when he was at the orphanage. It was kept the sunlight or the occasional light bulbs from bothering him. Here though, the curtains were closed, barely had daylight coming in, yet he still slept with that cap on. Wasn't he uncomfortable sleeping while wearing that? Only one way she'd fine out.
She stood up and gently shook Red Hat. "Mr. Red Hat, wake up!" She kept on shaking him, hoping he would wake up.
He began stir, and slowly got up from his bed. He rubbed his eye lids as he yawned. "Morning Lara..."
"Do you always sleep with that hat on? It doesn't look very comfortable." She asked.
He stood up and began to clean up his room. "I always have my hat on, unless very specific reasons like showering. It's very rare I take it off, even for sleeping. You get used to it after a while."
Lara tilts her head in confusion. She has never met someone that would almost never take their cap off for any particular reason. She decided not to question it further, believe he wasn't going to give her a straight answer.
"What's for breakfast? It's getting close to noon." Lara pointed out.
This caused Red Hat to stop dead in his tracks once he finished cleaning up. He knew he'd have to feed her soon enough, but he didn't have much to begin with. "I'll heat up some water for instant ramen. That's all I can offer at the moment."
She stared blankly at him. "Is that all you have? I don't mind, since I barely eat much to begin with, but don't you have anything. Sorry if I'm being a bit pushy."
"I usually only have enough food for myself and it can last me a while. I never thought I'd be in this kind of situation before..." He pointed.
She nodded and sat on his bed. "I understand... thank you, Mr. Red Hat."
"It's no trouble..."
Once he got done with everyone. He went to his very small kitchen where all it had was a cupboard, a mini fridge, and a small electric stove. He would have preferred a gas stove, but since people were moving away from gas-based technology, he didn't have much of a choice. He filled up the kettle with some water, before placing it on the stove to heat it up. Once he did that, he took out two cups of instant ramen from the cupboard. Actually, that's all he really had. His mini fridge only had bottles of water and the occasional milk, which he hardly found use for it besides the occasional coffee. Despite not being much of a drinker of cafine.
Once the vapor began to escape the kettle and create a whistle like notice. Red Hat turned off his stove and poured water from the kettle onto two cups of instant ramen. He added a bit of flavor from the packaging and gently mixed and stirred the ramen that was inside. Once he was sure it was ready, he took out two chopsticks and returned to Lara.
She was waiting patiently for him to come back with some breakfast. Once he entered the room with two cups of instant ramen. She instantly knew one of those cups was for her. "Thank you so much Red Hat!" She squealed as she took the cup of ramen, feeling the heat coming from the cup.
Red Hat smiled at her antics. "Just be careful. That cup is hot and I don't want you to spilling some of that." He said as he began to eat his ramen.
Lara smiled and followed suit. Both of them would eat their ramen in silence. Neither of them would speak and not a sound was heard, besides the occasional slurping from Lara and the sound of the clock ticking. Both of them would soon finish in time, with Lara happily full from her meal and laid down on the bed.
"Ah! That tasted so good!"
He couldn't help but chuckle at her excitement. "It's not much. I only ever been eating Instant Ramen for the past couple of years, with something on the occasion."
This cause Lara to perk up, but not for the reasons he thought. "Isn't it unhealthy for you to eat the same food over and over? That's what Martha always told me." She lightly blushed and twiddled her fingers. "Although, I don't eat much in the first place. Martha always says to appreciate whatever you have, especially food."
He lightly ruffled her hair, finding her antics amusing. "It's nice that you been taught so much for someone so young." He immediately had to retract what said, remembering that Lara's situation was much different than his, no matter how much he had interfered. "Then again, growing up in such a dysfunctional society that is, the Satellite Sector, does that to you."
Lara looks down to stare at her feet. "I didn't go there by choice originally. I was a very small when I arrived there..."
He took noticed her solemn expression. Was this a touchy subject? He was already pushing his luck, so may as well go hail marry right? "Were you sent to Satellite by your parents? After what I was told by those two officers. Your family brought great shame onto themselves after their business collapsed."
She continued to look down. "I don't know the details. My mamma told me to always behave, be honest and always live as dignified as I can." A tear began to form on her left eye. "She said someday Mamma and Papa would come back to get me after everything was resolved, but it's been years and I don't know what happened to them."
Red Hat suddenly felt bad for the poor girl. To be completely abandoned by her own parents, believing they would someday return. Only for them to not come back at all. They just left her in a dangerous place, and didn't bother to check up on her in the slightest. What kind of parents would do that to their own child so young? He gently pulled her close to him with his left arm. "There there, no need to feel so down..." He dared ask her another question. He was already this far. "Your time spent in the satellite... how has it been for you?"
She laid her head on his shoulder, still looking staring at her feet. "I always done what I've been told. It led to many kids and adults picking on me and taking advantage of my kindness. They knew I couldn't fight or defend myself so I had no choice." She then remembered that one day she was ambushed, which lead her to hide her face on his arm as she began to cry. "Then that day, when those men wanted to take everything from me. Then, you came to save me... I don't understand... why do people dislike me? I never done anything to them..."
Red Hat remained silent, feeling her tears soak his sleeve. He gently rubbed her head. "I shouldn't have asked..." He stared off into the ceiling. "There are awful people out there. They don't deserve your kindness. Being nice to everyone has a very high chance of you being taken advantage of."
She looked at him after drying out her tears. "What should I do?"
"It's not always easy to tell who are your actual friends and those who take advantage of you. One example I can give is; if they ask you for things such as help or give them things, but they intern refuse to help you out or give you something when you ask them. It happens many times, it just means those people don't actually care about you and only want to take advantage of."
"Is that one reasons? Or are there other signs." Lara asked, feeling a bit confused.
"It's not always easy to tell who is lying to you or is willing to take advantage of you." He replied. "Some people are so good at hiding it, that you won't know until the very last moment where they inevitably betray you or leave you without a second thought."
"I... didn't know that..."
They sat on the bed for a while now. Lara kicking her feet back and forth. After what felt like an eternity, Lara finally had the courage to speak up. "Um... this may sound like a strange question, but..." She didn't know if she should ask. After a bit of hesitation. "Do you miss your parents?"
Red Hat merely stared at the clocked as he answered. "Not really..."
This caught her by surprise. "Eh? You don't? Don't tell me you hate them, or they also left you behind!" She accused.
He just chuckled at her response. "It's nothing like that." He looked at her with a blank stare. "My mother died when I born. My father died in an accident a long time ago. I was found by officials and send me to an orphanage. I don't even have a picture of them."
"Oh?" Lara's eyes soften after she heard that. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have just assumed your situation. How did you handle yourself, and do you miss them?"
He gently rubbed her head as he stood up. "I'll tell you more about my life later. It's a bit complicated. All I can say about that is; I don't really miss them. I hardly know them, and memories are next to non-existent. You can't miss someone if you never knew them, even with vague memories. That doesn't mean I'm not grateful for them. They are the reason I'm even here."
Lara nodded and began to smile again. "Say, what will we be doing today?"
Red Hat stood up and exited his room, out into the backyard. This confused Lara ta first until she realized he came back in with her clothes. She had to remember that she was just wearing one of his shirts and not much else. "I woke up early to wash our clothes. They're all dry now, so you can wear them again. I even washed your shoes."
Her eyes gleamed at what she was just told. "You got up early just to wash our wet clothes from yesterday? Thanks, Mr. Red Hat!"
She went into the restroom get herself changed back into her usual clothes she had before. Red Hat in the meanwhile got himself dressed by wearing a black shirt, with a different red jacket. He put on a pair of white socks with black pair of sneakers he had kept for a while now as he waited by the door. His boots would take longer to dry, so those were out of the question for the moment. Lara came back out of the restroom in her usual attire, minus her shoes, since she was inside the house as she put them back one, once she reached the front door.
"Where are we going?" She asked, wondering where they'll be going. This new place was far too new for her, and she didn't want to get lost in such a huge, lively city.
He kneeled down to be at her level. "We're going shopping for some new clothes for you. We're going to be in hiding for the time being."
This confused Lara some more. "What do you mean hiding? I appreciate that you're going to get me new things, but what exactly are we hiding from?"
"Let's make this clear. I trespassed into the Satellite without permission, I fought back Sector Security, and we both escaped from the Satellite while running away from Sector Security. They aren't going to stop just because we lost them. If anything, they will try and track us down within the city." He further explained. "Because of what we did, that makes us fugitives. New clothes aren't just for hiding. It's also so Sector Security is less likely going to find us out. It also means I'll have to drop out of my dueling career until all of this is resolved or blown over."
"I... I never knew we would be in so much trouble..." She looked and stared at her shoes again. "I'm sorry for causing you trouble, Mr. Red Hat..."
He shook his head in disapproval. "Don't blame yourself. Neither of us could have known this would be the outcome." He assured her. 'Although, a part of me felt very worried about you way back when we accidentally first met... Curiosity killed the cat, is what they say...'
They would both exit his home. Red Hat made sure the doors were locked and the windows all covered up by curtains before he left the house. Once all was secured, he grabbed Lara's hand, making sure she wouldn't wonder off or get lost in such a new place far away from home.
A Few Hours Earlier at Satellite
A few hours earlier into the morning at Martha's place. Everyone had woken up to get some breakfast. What they didn't realize is that Red Hat was no longer in the couch where he usually was. They thought he headed out for a walk or something. That is, until they realized that Red Hat always loved to sleep in and rarely wakes up for anything, unless woken up by someone else. To their surprise, Lara wasn't awake either. Usually, she's one of the first ones to wake up. Usually, it was to wake up Red Hat, since no one else, besides Martha even bothered to wake him up.
After the children finished up their breakfast. They looked around the area, only to find a note on the same couch. One of the kids took hold of it and read what is said. To their shock, it was a letter from Red Hat.
'Dear to who it may concern I didn't want it to be like this, but I had no other choice. I don't really belong here. I had to leave or else I would be causing you kids even more trouble. I came to Satellite by my own accord. I never knew why I came here besides curiosity. Staying with you kids, including Martha, sure was an experience. I'm afraid I won't be coming back after I take my leave. Just so you know, I'm leaving via a boat I managed to hide when I came here. My only request is that you kids take care of Lara. That is all I ask. Destroy this paper once you read it. It may be used against me. ~ signed Red Hat.'
This was a shock to all the kids that were here. He actually left them? They knew he was from New Domino and he had to eventually leave soon, but why like this? He couldn't have said goodbye and stayed with them just for a little bit? They did understand his last request though. The kids gather up and found a couple of matches. With the help of Martha, they burned down the note that was left behind.
"Guess that means we won't be seeing him again..." A boy said.
"He didn't have much of a choice. Leaving this place isn't easy for anyone. The fact he wasn't caught for so long is very impressive." A girl pointed out.
"Yeah, but, couldn't have at least said goodbye to us? I know he wasn't the easiest guy to communicate with, unlike Crow. But he was genuine when he helped us out." Another boy said.
The door behind them opened up harshly, revealing to be Walter and two of his current followers coming out in a rush. One of the boys had blue hair and wore a black and green sweater with a yellow shirt underneath He wore red shorts white socks and regular sneakers. The second boy had greenish blue hair and wore a sleeveless light purple jacket. We also wore red shorts and had white socks and wore regular sneakers. "Martha! we looked all over the house! Lara isn't here! She's not in her room and she's not in her favorite places!" Walter called out.
"Wait what?! How can that be?! Don't tell me she ran out again?!" Martha asked, shocked that Lara would just disappear so soon.
"Let's four of us try to find her! She couldn't have gone too far, right?" Walter asked. The other two boys weren't so sure they should go through with it.
"Don't go running farther then you have to!" Martha warned. "It's not safe for you kids to be out there for so long!"
"Don't worry, Martha! We'll take it from here! Right, Michael, Hayden?"
The two boys sighed and nodded. They knew once Walter made up his mind, there was no way of convincing him to change his mind. "Guess we don't have a choice then." the blue haired boy named Michael said.
"I'll chime in to help you guys!" A brown-haired girl spoke up. She wore pink overalls with a yellow under shirt, wore white socks with brown shoes. She was carrying a black cat with her.
This surprised everyone around them, most especially, Michael and Hayden. "Wait? You're accompanying us, Edith?!"
The girl named Edith nodded with a smile. "Someone has to watch you boys! Besides, we ought to stick together in such a search."
"Got that right!" A boy with greenish-blue hair, named Hayden replied. "It's not often we get to head deeper into the area! This should provide a great challenge. Besides, Walter has our backs!"
"I still say, this is a bad idea." Michael sighed, not sure if he should continue going through with this.
"Don't be such a wimp Michael! Besides, even if we don't find Lara. We'll at least have the area memorized so we don't get lost or if we have to cover our tracks easier!" Walter proclaimed. "With the four of us, there's no force out there to stop us."
"He always exaggerates his abilities, doesn't he?" Michael sweat dropped.
"Least he's honest with himself." Hayden replied with a nervous smile.
"Well, it's better to have that, then listen to him sing, right?" Edith pointed out with a cheeky grin.
This caused both boys to shudder. They hated being reminded that Walter would on occasion sing to everyone around him. What they don't tell him, his singing voice is like nails on a chalk board. It's so bad, yet he believes it's an amazing tune. More often than not when he sings. Cracks on the window would occur to the point they snap at his singing voice. They refuse to tell him the truth for fear he would get angry at them. So, they keep it to themselves, much to their distain.
Walter was already far ahead of them. This caught the trio by surprise he was already on the move. Walter looked behind and notice the tri hasn't moved an inch. "What's the matter slow pokes! Are you coming or not! I can always have my henchmen in the other areas to help me out!"
"Should we tell him that his so-called henchmen don't really like him?" Michael said, sweat dropping again.
"Oh, come on boys! Do you want to find Lara or not!" Edith snapped at the two, causing them to focus their attention on her. "For all we know, she could be in big trouble! What if that happened to you two!"
"Sorry, Edith! Let's hurry and follow Walter!" Both boys said in unison.
"That's a lot better boys!" She giggled as the trio began to quickly ran off to catch up with Walter. While the rest of the kids headed back to the orphanage with Martha right behind them. They hoped they would come back soon enough and wouldn't get into trouble.
B.A.D Area
To say the area around was way too big for them was an understatement. Despite marking various areas with marks of graffiti to make sure they didn't get lost and were on the right track. The broken-down area was far larger than they imagined. They also took notice of a large hole in the center of the area, which they agreed to stay as far away from the hole as possible.
"This place gives me the creeps." Michael said, not liking his surroundings. "Who knows who's hiding all the way out here."
"Don't be such a worry wort, Michael. Unless you're so scared you want Edith to protect you." Walter teased.
Michael cheeks redden at that. "H-H-Hey, not true!"
"He's technically right though. Even with all of your henchmen, we don't stand a chance against the adults that are around." Hayden pointed out. "As much as I like a challenge, I rather not encounter those guys."
"Hay, we have plenty of stuff to fight back with. Rocks, sheet metal, and even wood which we can take from furniture. You guys worry too much." Walter replied, completely disregarding their points.
"They have every right to be worried, Walter. Besides, there's not telling what's out there. You don't exactly come out here very often without your henchmen. Lara roams around on her own." Edith pointed out, not liking how Walter is dismissing every warning they're giving him.
"All the more reason we should be worried about Lara. Come on, let's get a move on!" Walter took off running. The trio sighed and did their best to catch up with him. Already not liking where this is going.
Satellite Square
After getting though the massive area. The four kids made their way to the old Satellite Square. While they have been here before. No matter how many times they came here, it still gave them the creeps. This area was known to have many gangs, thieves and violent criminals. The kids sure to keep their distance from the main roads, and all agreed to never enter the buildings unless it was a last resort.
What had them worried in the long run was Sector Security. They have been known to arrest kids when every they felt like it or if they caused any sort of mischief. They made sure to stay as low as possible. They were not safe in this kind of area. Granted, outside of Martha's orphanage, they weren't safe in the other zone either.
Michael was getting tired from all the needless walking around. Hayden and Edith were still holding on, but Walter being as stubborn as he is, kept on going. "Shouldn't we take a break? We don't even know how long we been walking." Micheal suggested.
Walter thought about for a moment and agreed to his suggestion. "Yeah, let's take a small break. We need to catch our breath."
The four of them gathered round and sat down together. They made sure to stay hidden away from the main roads. Using debris to make sure no one would notice. They began to chatter around for a little while. Making sure they were as quiet as they could. Occasionally they would take a peek to make sure the coast was clear. As they were about to leave their spot, they head many footsteps coming from the other side. Edit duck down and took a small peak. She backed away realizing who they were.
"Shh, stay quiet and stay low. It's Sector Security. They must be on patrol." She whispered.
The three boys nodded and got down. Making sure they didn't make any noise.
They soon heard glass shattering outside, which alerted Sector Security to follow where the noise was. Edith's cat hissed and ran off, though she didn't seem to mind. As she seems to understand why it wanted to leave. "Must be gangs outside. Now's our chance to leave."
"Right, follow me. Grab a couple of things just in case." Walter ordered, which all of them agreed to. They would take a couple of rocks, with Hayden finding a wooden stick. Walter was able to find a steel pipe, which was light enough for him to carry. They exited their hiding spot and quickly ran off in the opposite direction. One thing was for sure, they had to return to their home fast.
Despite managing to make their getaway. Their luck wouldn't last long as they encountered a man who has spotted them. He had marron colored hair, wore a brown sleeveless jacket with a white long-sleeved shirt, wore black pants and black boots. What caught the kid's attention to this man was the mark on his right cheek. Meaning, this guy was either dangerous or was a criminal.
"What are you kids doing in my turf?!" The man asked them rudely. The sound of his voice nearly intimidated the kids, but they stood their ground.
"We were just passing by! We don't want trouble. We just want to get the heck out of here!" Walter answered with a glare.
This didn't sit well with the man. "Then why are you all carrying weapons! I already have to deal with that troublemaker Mint Rocket, and that thief trying to steal my stuff and from my men!"
"Please Mister, let us pass! We don't want to get caught by Sector Security!" Edith pleaded.
"I was already caught! I'll fight them even they try to catch me again!"
"That's enough already, Jamie." The kids and the man, now known as Jamie, turned around to where the voice came from. The came from a blue haired man. He wore a black jacket with an orange shirt underneath it, wore navy blue pants with a grey belt and wore brown boots. "Must you always act so rash about these situations?"
Jamie growled at him. "Stay out of this, Syun. You know damn well what goes on around here!"
The man known as Syun sighed. He knew of his friend's antics, but sometimes he went overboard. "I know very well what kinds of people we deal with, Jamie. However, these are just kids. Any adult will pulverize them without a second thought."
"Fine, have it your way, Syun." Jamie huff and walked back into the building he was hiding in.
"Sorry about my friend there. He's been though rough times in recent years." Syun explained to the kids.
The kids sighed in relief, but that didn't mean they were safe. "Hey, this may seem like an odd question but..." Hayden was about ask.
"Do you know where a girl named Lara has been?" Walter interjected. "She's about our size, her hair covers her right eye and wears a skull-like hair clip."
Syun narrowed his eyes at them, but not for the reasons they thought. "Lara? As in Ayumi Sera? Daughter of the Sera family?"
This confused the kids further. "Sera family? Just what are you talking about?" Edith asked.
"Come inside, it's not safe to talk out here." When he turned around. "Don't worry, I'll make sure the men in there won't lay a finger on you. Jamie may be a bit rough, but he doesn't harm innocent people."
The kids sighed in relief and followed Syun into the building. They noticed all they had for electricity was a few light bulbs that barely lit up the dark rooms. Windows were barricaded by wood and sheet metal. All they had inside was an old fashion TV that still used antenna and a pool table which they had to make themselves. Needless to say, these men have seen better days.
They were taken to a nearly empty room, which all it had was a couple seats, a cabinet filled with files, and a desk. Syun went behind the desk and sat on the chair that was behind it. "Take a seat if you will."
The kids sat down on the seats that they were offered. Walter decided to remain standing and spoke up. "So, are going to tell us about Lara or not? Why act so secretive?"
"I'm getting there." Syun replied, maintaining his patience. "The girl you're talking about is part of the Sera Family. Her actual name before she was left to live in the Satellite was named Ayumi Sera. Her last name was dropped and her first name was replaced."
"But why go out of their way to change their own daughters name?" Edith asked, not understanding the reason behind all of this.
"Her father was a famous ore business tycoon and had a wealthy business. From what I understand back in those days. After making shady investments. Their business would soon go bankrupt and their business collapsed. This caused the Sera family to scatter and brought great shame to their name." Syun explain with a calm expression. "After an investigation happened, the Sera family had used many shady business practices. Once they were exposed, everyone lost their support, both in New Domino City and in the Satellite."
"But what does this have to do with Lara anyway?" Hayden asked.
"The girl you were looking for. Everyone knew the Sera family, including the young girl you know of. The Sera family was greatly hated and Lara was no exception. The family went into hiding, although they just disappeared one day. No knew what happened to them after their disappearance."
"Get on with it! What does this have to do with Lara?!" Walter persisted.
Syun sighed, trying to maintain his posture. "Haven't you gotten the memo? A young man with a red cap escaped the Satellite with a young girl you speak of. I overheard Sector Security talking about someone escaping with the girl you speak off." He got off his seat and took a looked at the kids from behind his shoulder. "If you're wondering about your friend. She's no longer in the satellite. She has escaped with that young man. Although, if the rumors are true. He never intended to escape with her. I believe she must have followed him."
"Eh? Really?! So, then, Lara is no longer here?!" The kids explained in unison.
"Return home. This area is dangerous and you all will most likely not survive much longer. It was pure luck you even managed to us in the first place." Syun explained as he showed them the door. "Do me a favor and don't return to this area. Last thing I want is for you kids to be captured and marked."
"Thanks for telling us." Edith said. The boys nodded in agreement.
"Guess we should tell Martha the news then." Hayden said.
The four of them would soon leave the building together. Taking his advice, they would avoid the open area and stay hidden as much as they could, until they reached the orphanage.
Syun sighed as he felt a headache coming along. "Kids these days man."
"Don't know why you put up with those kids." Jamie said, as he walked up to him. "They don't your cause. Besides, why would you know anything about that?"
"Word spreads fast, no matter how insignificant it can be." He replied.
"Jamie scoffed and turn around. "Just keep that brat and those thieves away from our turf! I've had it with those trouble makers! Especially No Money Yaiyoi, I hate that medling woman." He said and went back inside.
Syun remained silent as he followed Jamie inside. He wondered how he was going to help him. Ever since Jamie was captured, he's been trying desperately to get him back on his feet, but was unsuccessful so far. He hopes everything will turn out well for him someday.
Martha's Place
Walter and the gang made their way past the B.A.D area, making sure they weren't spotted by Sector Security and other left over gang members hanging around the area. Edith's found another stray cat in the meanwhile, which followed her without a second thought.
Despite some difficulties they had. All four of them managed to make back, unharmed. "Martha! We made it back in one piece!" Walter called out as they entered the orphanage.
The rest of the kids came out and ran up to them. Martha soon would come down with a couple other kids.
"How did it go! You guys been gone for a long time now!" A girl pointed out.
"Did you find Lara?" A boy asked.
All four of them shook their heads. "Lara isn't going to be found." Hayden said.
"Lara isn't in satellite anymore." Michael sated.
This confused Martha and the kids. What did they mean, she wasn't in Satellite anymore? What could have happened to her?
"Don't worry! Lara was found by and taken by Mr. Red Hat!" Edith corrected. "We met someone in Satellite Square that told us what was going on!"
"Lara escape Satellite with Mr. Red Hat." Walter repeated. "So, that means, Lara is in New Domino City with Mr. Red Hat."
"Who told you this information?" Martha asked, wondering how they found out about this.
"Well… We met a guy at Satellite Square named Syun." Walter explained. "He even told what happened to them from what he heard."
"Apparently, this guy Syun knew Lara's family." Michael added.
"We find that really hard to believe." The kids replied.
"It may be hard to believe, but that's what we been told. We were unable to find Lara. So, all we can do is take his word for it." Edith defended.
"For now, all that matters is that you kids are safe. If what you told me is true. Then Lara should be in good hands for the time being." Martha said, as he took the four kids inside.
For the remainder of the day. The kids would stay and hang around the orphanage. Walter and the others left out the detail about Lara's family and name. They knew better then to reveal such information so soon to other… after Edith threaten him to use her cat on him if he dared told anyone about Lara's family and her actual name.
For the remainder of the day, the orphanage continued on as if not much has really changed.
Meanwhile in New Domino City
Red Hat and Lara have been walking around the city of New Domino City. While Red Hat wasn't too fond of the city life in the slightest. Finding it too noisy for his liking. Lara on the other hand, couldn't help but admire the city life around her. People wandered the streets, enjoying their time around various shops, and laughing as they went about their lives. Not many people took note of the duo. Considering how out of place Lara was compared to many others.
Red Hat knew he had to get her some new clothes right now. The longer Lara hung around him in her usual attire. The more likely people will suspect something or even recognize her. The last thing he wanted was for Lara to be treated badly here, too. Granted, there was a higher chance of Lara being found out here, but that was beside the point.
He made sure to stay away from heavily populated areas. The mall the city had to offer was out of the question. There was a high chance to get detected by Sector Security inside a mall. So, he had to settle with regular stores that were around.
"This city is so lively!" Lara said, enjoying the sights of the city. To her, this felt like she was transported to another land, compare to her old home.
"You can say that. While I'm not a huge fan of the city. It's certainly an amazing place." Red Hat replied, smiling at Lara's enthusiasm.
"Say, where are we going?" She asked. "You did say, we're going to buy new clothes, right?"
Red Hat nodded. "That's right, but we have to find a shop that's not heavily populated. The less the people of New Domino City see you like this, the better. Besides…" He rubbed the back of his head sheepishly. "I don't want people to think the wrong idea."
Lara was confused by that statement. "What do you mean by that? I don't quite follow?"
Red Hat refused to answer her question. He just took her hand and continued walking forward. He started to pick up the pace, which Lara began to run to catch up with him. What was wrong with him? She didn't think she asked such an awkward question.
It took a lot longer than Red Hat expected, but he was finally able to find a clothes shop. This time around, this shop was much smaller by comparison to most other shops he's found. This one was located much farther into the city and not many people were actually inside. This was the perfect opportunity to find Lara some clothes.
A bell chimed as he opened the door. A middle-aged woman took notice of their entrance. The woman had brown shoulder length hair, slowing turning white by her aged, was wearing a green sweater, and wore a long shirt that reached her ankles. She also wore glasses over her brown eyes. "Welcome you two!"
"Hello Ma'am." Red Hat replied with a slight bow.
The middle-aged woman took notice of Lara and smiled. "I see her clothes are a bit worn out? The kid section for clothes is on the far-right side." She pointed to where they had to go.
Red Hat nodded and smiled. "Thanks for the help."
"Thank you!" Lara thanked.
As the duo looked around the place. The middle-aged woman watched the duo with slight interest.
'I wonder if those two are related? The man is too young to be his daughter. It's very unlikely to be his niece.' The middle-aged woman thought as she observed the duo. 'Oh well, it's none of my business.'
Red Hat was looking around for clothes for Lara. What he didn't realize, he was utterly clueless on what clothes he should get for her. He showed Lara some clothes he thought would look nice on her, only for her to reject them. Most of them being dresses, skirts and many other shirts.
'Hmm… Wonder what Lara would like…' He thought as he continued to look around. Most of the clothes were far too girly for her liking. One thing he noticed; she wasn't too fond of bright colors on most of them. So, he decided to look at darker colored clothes.
After a bit of searching, the most he was able to Lara's liking was a brown long skirt, a black long shirt, and came with a brown sweater. He also found a large oversized light brown hat.
"How about these?" Red Hat asked, feeling uncertain about the combination.
Lara smiled at him. "I like it!"
"Head to the changing room and try it out. In the meanwhile, I'll search for other clothes for you to wear."
Lara nodded and entered the changing room.
Red Hat took a look around nearby in search for underwear, socks and any kind of shoes for Lara to wear. He sighed, since he had no idea what Lara sizes was, let alone what she would even want to wear-. Didn't help that this was not his comfort zone when it came to shopping or clothes. No matter, he had to do this for her. Didn't matter if it had to kill his budget. He was going to offer her the best things he could offer her.
Without much hesitation, he picked out some clothes that Lara would be needing. He was held bent on finding shoes and accessories for her. Until he was certain she wanted them, he won't consider them any further. While he would search for himself. Nothing seems to interest him at the moment.
It took only a few minutes, but Lara finally came out from the dressing room, wearing the clothes he offered. She didn't know why, but she found the outfit rather cute.
"I like this outfit, Mr. Red Hat!" Lara said as she spun around, giggling in the process.
Red Hat couldn't help but chuckle. "Glad you like it." He showed her some undergarments as well as some socks. "You'll need more of these. Thought pink would be good enough…"
Lara shook her head. "It doesn't matter to me, Mr. Red Hat. Anything will do. I just wanted something different is all."
"I see…" He found a light brown hat and it puts on Lara. "I think the hat suits your clothes rather well. Your choice if you want it or not."
Lara took a look at the mirror and smiled. It may be a bit big, but I like it! Thanks!"
"Very well. Do change back. Since I have to pay for all of this first."
"Oh right! One sec, okay!" Lara went back to the changing room to change back to her old clothes. She came back out in her old attire, while holding onto the new clothes. "Okay, I'm back!"
In the meanwhile, Red Hat took a look around and found some brown boots that appeared to be Lara's size. "Say, since your old shoes are starting to fall apart. How about I get you something else to wear. Try these out why don't you."
Lara nodded and smiled. The fact he was going so far to give this much was already remarkable. It's almost like her life was finally turning around for the better. 'He's doing so much for me… If only Mamma and Papa were here with me…' She shook off that thought. Someday she would see them. Least she hoped so. In the meanwhile, she would remain polite and dignified as possible.
Lara would remove both of her shoes and put on the boots he was given. To her surprise, they actually fit. As she tried to walk, that's when she started to fumble. Since she never wore boots before. They felt a little awkward at first. Red Hat helped her out a little so she could get used to the feeling. Once she gotten used to it the feeling of walking around with the boots on. Lara let' go of Red Hat's arm and began walking on her own. This time around, she had no trouble at all.
Smiling at her accomplishment, she returned to his side. "Was a bit tricky, but I actually did it. These boots go well with my new clothes!"
"I'm helping you out, and I'm glad." He looked around the shop a bit more. "See anything else you like? You get to decide too, you know."
Lara decided to look around a bit more. She had a bit of a hard time deciding on what she wanted to get. She was grateful that Red Hat was offering so much for her, but she found it a bit much. Something inside her felt bad for wanting more. She learned that she can't have everything she wants. She decided to only ask for a couple of things.
Most of the things she asks for was simple overalls and long shirts, all with varying dark colors. Usually brown, black, purple and blue colors respectfully. Although, she wanted something else for pajamas. The one she wanted for sleep wear was a long soft purple frilly dress with long sleeves, came with a pink ribbon wrapped around the waist, and a pink sleeping hat.
"I want this outfit, Mr. Red Hat! It's something I can use to sleep in!" Lara said as she picked out the outfit.
Red Hat chuckled as he added it to the pile of clothes he was carrying. "Very well. You could use better sleeping clothes." Red Hat would soon find some clothes for himself. Although, it wasn't much in the first place. All he got was a blue jacket and a couple black shirts. There wasn't much else that was to his liking.
Once they were done. They head back to the register. Once the middle-aged woman scanned all the clothes and soon revealed the full price. "This is how much it is."
Red Hat face turned white for a couple moments. 'Eh? It cost this much?' He muttered to himself as he took out as much money as he had at the moment. Although, the middle-aged woman took notice of his reaction and smiled. "Here it is, ma'am."
"Thanks for coming buy. Hope to see you again." The middle-aged woman said.
Red Hat took clothes and Lara's new shoes and placed them in a couple bags he was offered. As soon as he was about to leave the store, the middle-aged woman called out to him.
"It's none of my business, but who is that girl? You two don't look related and you're too young to be her father."
The sound of Mr. Red Hat being called her dad made Lara blush. Sure, he was taking care of her, and she was her savior, but to be called her dad? That was a bit too much. She's been waiting for her real parents to come back and she didn't like intruding into Mr. Red Hat's life.
Red Hat froze up for a moment. What could he tell her? Adopted child is out of the question, since that would only cause more questions to be asked. Older brother is also out of the question, since he himself has no relatives to speak of. Distant cousin could be a good enough excuse, though he would have to be careful with his words.
"She is a distant cousin of mine. Her parents are working abroad. Since they had no one to take care of her. They contacted me to take care of her, which I complied." He explained, hoping that was a good enough excuse. If it backfired then he would be facing some major trouble.
The middle-aged woman looked at him with a questionable look. "I find that questionable. Since most lone men wouldn't care about taking care of their relatives. You must be very responsible to take care of your youngest cousin."
'To be fair, Lara is my responsibility now…' He thought to himself. "Thank you, anyway I'll be taking my leave." The duo left the shop as quickly as they could. Red Hat refused to be questioned further.
'What a responsible young man. That girl looks familiar though… Must be my imagination.'
Red Hat made his way back home with Lara by his side. When they arrived back, he immediately laid back down on his bed. He was wondering what to do next. He was absolutely clueless on how to raise Lara. He knew kids needed food, clothing, and education. Although, there only so much he could offer.
Before, when he lived alone. He could handle himself with the most minimum number of resources. Despite his status as a small-time pro. He wasn't getting anywhere for the time being. To him, that was all that he needed. He was a duelist and he enjoyed facing strong opponents. Now, he had to earn as much income as possible. It didn't help that he and Lara needed a new duel disk.
Soon, Lara entered his room with her deck. "Mr. Red Hat, do you work or something?"
He sat up once he was called. "Technically yes. As a Pro Duelist, I go about challenging powerful opponents. Although, that won't be possible for the time being…"
This confused Lara. "Why not? It's something you love to do!"
"Now that Sector Security is onto us. I can't just duel recklessly in the pro leagues. That would make me an easy target for arrest." Red Hat explained. "Not only do I have to find some other way to make income. I have to protect you as much as I can."
Lara sat down on his bed next to him. "What will we be doing now? Are we just stuck in this house." She said, sounding a bit disappointed.
"No need to go that far..." He replied. "We'll still be going out and checking things out. I'll try and find income in different ways." He ruffled her hair slightly. "It will be no different like in the Satellite."
Lara smiled at the action. "Oh, I see then." She then looked around the house more carefully. "You don't do much do you? It looks really empty for the most part."
He chuckled at her question. "I'm more of a minimalist. I tend to not have much in the first place. The computer I have is old and it's only used to search specific information."
"What kind of information?" She asked.
"I think you asked enough." He stood up and changed his shirt and jacket. He even put on some black fingerless gloves. "Get dressed in your new clothes. We're still not done with our shopping yet. We're going to try an order some duel disks. One for me and one for you."
Lara gave him a questionable look. "Shop for a duel disk? Don't you have another duel disk?"
He shook his head in response. "That duel disk I threw at Sector Security was my only one. Since you don't have one either, we're going to have to get new ones."
"We? I'm going to get my own duel disk?"
"That's right. You're a duelist too. You treasure your cards, and you're willing to duel, even if the odds are against you, and you were willing to improve and follow advice. That alone makes you a true duelist in my eyes." He encouraged.
Lara giggled at his compliment. Never would she have expected to be complimented by anyone, besides Martha. This was rather new to her. "Do you think… I'll ever be as good as you? I'm not very good, and I refuse to change my deck too much."
He gave her a soft look. "I can change decks on a dime. In your case, it's a matter of updating your deck so it can be better. A deck, no matter the play style always evolves and changes with the user. I also think, the cards themselves answers your prayers."
"Really?"
"I'm sure." He handed her the new clothes. "Get changed, we have to make sure we aren't recognized by suspicious people." He said as he put on a pair of goggles around his hat.
Lara nodded and quickly entered the restroom to change into her new clothes. After taking a little while to get ready. She came out in her new clothes and even wore her new hat. They would soon leave the house after they put their boots on and Red Hat locked the door.
New Domino City
Despite having no idea where to get duel disk from. Red Hat refused to ask people where to get one. Think he had gone mad if asked such a question. Considering he was already an experienced duelist and saying that he lost his duel disk would raise many red flags.
The duo would soon find a vending machine. Only this one was much different compared to most generic vending machines. This one vending machine was chanced based via a slot machine. To what Red Hat understood from this machine. By entering coins, the three wheels would spin and he had to tab the button three times. One for each slot. If all the colors match, he would gain all three items. Although, he knew the chance of that was very unlikely.
'These machines are always rigged. Who has actually gotten all three colors to match. Let alone the rarest gold item.' He thought with distain as he entered coins into the slot and began to play with this ridiculous machine.
After what appeared to be several attempts. Judging by how Lara was now holding various item. A bottle of water, a wrapped cookie, various junk as Red Hat called it, and for some reason perfume. 'Are the vending items completely random?' Red Hat thought.
"What exactly are you looking for? You been on there for a while now." Lara asked, feeling a bit annoyed how they been standing here for a while now.
"I'm hoping to get a rare figurine." He answered, still trying to get said item from the machine and failing miserably. "It's for bribery."
"What do you mean by that?"
"You'll see." After spending more time on the machine. It finally landed on a gold figurine symbol on the screen. Once he selected it, he waited for a bit on what would appear. To his surprise, the rare figurine that came out of it was a White Magician Pikeru figurine.
"All that for a figurine? I know you're not the type to collect figurines. So, why this one in particular?" Lara asked, seemingly not understanding why he would go so far just for a figurine.
"You'll see in a little bit." He replied, dodging her question again as he took the remaining items she was holding.
Lara sighed, but followed him regardless. She sometimes doesn't understand what Mr. Red Hat was planning.
After a bit of walking, and the fact that it was nearing sunset. The duo has made their way to the card shop that was in one of the many buildings deep into the city.
As they entered, they were greeted by none other than, Rathie. "Good evening! Oh? Well look who it is. You even brought a kid with you."
Lara did not like the man she was seeing, but made no comment.
"Rathie, I have a huge request to make. I need a new duel disk for myself and the girl that's with me." Red Hat requested.
"Well, you came to the wrong place." Rathie answered. "This is just a card shop, man. Ordering duel disk is a tall order for most card shops. You either have to go to those tech shops or make your own duel disk. Good luck with that though, unless you're a mechanic of some sort."
Red Hat did not like his answer. Going to the tech area will attracted unwanted attention and there was no way he was going to waste his time building his own duel disk for the two of them. "Please Rathie! I need those duel disks. I can't afford to waste head to the tech areas and I have no intention of making them myself."
Rathie gave him a blank stare. "You should have thought about that earlier. There's nothing I can do about it."
"Really now?" Red Hat said with a smirk as he took out the figurine. "You wouldn't do it for this rare item will you? As well as this this." He also took out some of money.
The sight of the figurine caused Rathie's eye to water in tears. "It can't be! The rare Pikeru figurine!"
"This figurine and the money I offered you is all yours if you order me and this girl a brand-new duel disk. You can take as much time as you need. Just make sure those are for us and nothing has been tampered with." Red Hat teased, though this came off more as a bribe rather than a favor.
Rathie nodded and agreed to the conditions. "Very well. I take the money and the figurine, thank you very much." He took the figurine and placed it in a sealed glass container. He then began to make a couple of phone calls and did some searching on his computer.
After what seem like hours of waiting. Rathie finally stood up and gave them a positive response. "It wasn't easy, but I was able to order two duel disk for the both of you. Even had to specifically order a duel disk designed for young children."
"When will those duel disk arrive?" Red Hat asked, feeling uncertain about this deal.
"If you're lucky. They should arrive here by the afternoon tomorrow. It can take about as long as two days." Rathie answered, also with uncertainty.
Hoping he was true to his word. Red Hat complied with the deal. "We'll be here by tomorrow around mid-day. I hope you kept your end of the bargain."
"You're a rough customer. You know that, right?"
"Don't remind me…" He replied as the duo left the card shop and took another walk around the city.
It was already night time by the time the duo made their way across the city. One thing was for sure, Red Hat wanted to find a food stand or restaurant. That way, Lara could get a meal that wasn't just instant ramen. While he didn't mind only eating ramen. He had to actually give Lara some quality food. He was no longer looking after himself.
"Where are we going Mr. Red Hat?" Lara asked, now feeling hungry.
"We're going to get some dinner for tonight. Something simple is good enough for now." He said as he kept moving. "Eventually I'll start shopping for a variety of food. But for now, it's best to start with something simple."
"Oh, I see…"
They continued to walked around the city, until they found a restaurant that seemed empty enough. Least for the time being. As the duo entered the place, they took notice that the place was a steak house. It sold steak, pork, beef, and among other kinds of meat. Red Hat found such a place questionable in such an area, but who was he to judge.
"Welcome! What will you two be ordering today on this fine evening?" A middle-aged male chef asked.
The duo looked at the menu to see what their order would be. Lara on the other hand had no clue what to order. She was so used to noodles, strew, rice, curry and usually fruits. She had no idea what most of these meats taste like.
Red Hat took notice of this and decided to order for the both of them. "We'll take two juicy steaks, large ones please."
"Very well, young lad." The chef went over to the register and charged the duo the set amount. "Pay up first, before I serve you."
Red Hat took the recipe and his eyes slightly twitched, which the other two were oblivious to. 'Why are prices so expensive these days? At this point, I should stop questioning these prices.' He thought as he paid up.
The chef took the money and placed it in the register. He then began to start cooking both steaks for the duo. In the meanwhile, Red Hat and Lara took their seats on the furthest table.
"I have to ask… Have you ever eaten these kinds of food before, Mr. Red Hat?" She asked.
"When I was young, I used to eat all kinds of food. Once I started living alone and traveling on my own. I started eating less and less variety and stuck with instant ramen." He explained with uncertainty.
"But why? Isn't it unhealthy to eat the same thing over and over?" Lara asked, seemingly worried.
"When prices rise, and the fact I don't earn as much income as some people think I do. Most of my things I have already owned in the past. I'm lucky I was able to find a house to rent for 'cheap'" He ethicized on cheap, since he knew relative cheap housing was near impossible to obtain these days. Regardless where you actually live.
It didn't take long, but their orders soon came to them. Lara was amazed at how big the steak really was. She was also dazed with how good the smell was. Red Hat found her reaction amusing. Guess living with the bare minimum of food would do that to a young girl. Then again, he never tasted such food either. So, this was a first for him as well.
Lara took the first bite, and as soon as she did. Her eyes water with joy at how good this steak tasted. Never did she think she would eat something so delicious in her life. Red Hat, while he didn't have the same reaction. Merely gasped slightly at the taste. He couldn't deny this steak was an absolute treat.
"Mmm! This is soo good!" Lara cried out.
Red Hat chuckled as he kept eating. "Take as much time as you want with eating your steak. We're in no big rush."
The two of them would continue to eat in silence, which the chef watching over the restaurant. While Lara would slowly eat her steak. Taking as much time to savor the taste as much as she can. Red Hat would eat it normally like any other food he would eat.
Eventually they would finish up their steak and soon the middle-aged chef was about to close the restaurant.
"Mr. Red Hat, thanks for the special meal. It really meant a lot that I got to eat such delicious meat." Lara thanked.
"No trouble at all. I wanted you to have many great foods to eat." He replied.
Soon the lights would go out, which even surprised the chef.
"What's going on here? We haven't had a power outage in ages."
"Thanks for the Meal!" Red Hat thanked. He and Lara would take their leave, only to figure out the entire city was having a black out.
"Stay close to me…" He said as he took Lara's hand. 'How can a city this big have a power outage?' He thought, making sure the area was clear for them to move.
He then noticed a source of red light in the distance. He had no idea what that light was, but didn't want to find out. Soon the light would fade away, but the city's power remains the same.
"What was that red light, Mr. Red Hat?" Lara asked.
Before Red Hat could answer, sirens began blaring across the streets. It was none other than Sector Security. However, moved passed them. Almost like they didn't even know they were here. He refused to believe the disguises were working. He took a look at where they were going and noticed that they were heading to the dueling stadium.
"Looks like they are more focused going over there then us." He held up Lara and placed her on his shoulder. "This is our chance. Let's get out of the city and back to my place!"
The duo made a run for it. Staying away from the main roads and sidewalks. The less anyone took notice of their presence the better.
By the time the duo made their way back to their home. The power of the city began to lit up, one after another. Red Hat put Lara down and opened the door. He flickered the light switch and the lights turned on. He sighed in relief, knowing the power is back on.
'Just what was that all about?' He thought as they entered his home, taking off their shoes and closing the door.
They entered his room where Red Hat then began to lay down the blanket and some covers. That way Lara would be able to sleep. He had to remember to buy her at least a futon. It wasn't right for her to be sleeping on the floor.
Lara entered the restroom with her new sleeping clothes. After getting dressed, she came out of the restroom. While it didn't cover her lower legs. She didn't seem to mind. She also took a liking to wearing the sleeping hat.
"I see you're ready for bed. How does it feel to be in new clothes?" He asked.
Lara giggled at the feeling. "It feels great being able to have all these new things…" Her mood turned a bit down. "But… I don't won't be a bother to you."
"You aren't a bother to me, Lara" He comforted her.
"It feels like you're doing this just because you owe me. And… I want to feel like I'm just leeching off you…"
He quickly hugged her tight. She was surprised by this action. "Never think so lowly of yourself. I rescued you, and I brought you here. I understood the huge risks for bringing you here. So long as you're with me. You'll be in my care." He gave her a warm smile. Will we see the others again? I'm sure we will, but first we have to have steady income and have a stable life here."
Lara smiled at this. "Mr. Red Hat… I don't know what to say, but thank you."
"It's time you sleep. We have a big day tomorrow. Not only do we get our duel disks, hopefully. You'll be coming with, while I try to find either a job or a way to find income." He explained as he let her go.
Lara smiled as she laid down on the covers and tucked herself in. "Good night, Mr. Red Hat!"
"Good night, Lara." He replied as he turned off all the lights and made sure his doors were locked.
'To think my life would change because of her… To be honest… I wouldn't have it any other way.' He thought as he slowly drifted to sleep. Not even bothering to change. His adventures with Lara have only just begun.
A/N: This took far longer then expected. It felt like I was craming in as much detail as I could. This was mostly to get an idea on how much I'll be diverging, while still attempting to make sure anime events happen. It's just Red Hat won't be involved unless he's forced to. In any case, this chapter is mostly setting up for what's to come. Some of the things mentions is more a self parody on how Red Hat is prone to living with the bare minimum and now he has to change his living habits. Tag Force lore is taken into account with said characters that appear or mentioned, with a different twist.
That's all for now. See you all next time.
