Leon felt even worse about the situation as he saw her start to cry and did the only thing he could do which was to gently take his hand to her chin and making her look at him. He frowned as he saw the tears falling from her brown eyes.
"Hey, that wasn't your fault. What happened with Deborah and with Simmons was out of your control, alright? He used you to get what he wanted, and you were the best big sister and I'm sure Deborah believed that to the very end."
Helena looked away, unsure of what else to say as Leon finished changing her bandages. He couldn't bear seeing Helena this way; the strong woman that he had grown to love was crumbling. He knew that all she needed was time and then she'd be back to her old self.
"Why don't you rest? I'll go talk to Aliya," he says, giving her a kiss on the forehead and helping her lay down.
Leon went downstairs where Aliya was in the living room with Jake and Sherry, all three of them sitting on the couch and staring at him as he entered. Leon immediately knew that they knew something had happened.
"Thanks for watching her guys," he says as the two got up.
"Don't mention it. Is Helena alright?" Sherry asks as Leon briefly glanced over at Aliya, who looked pissed, sitting back on the couch with her arms crossed.
"Yeah, she'll be fine. She just got drugged last night and took a hell of a beating but she's resting right now."
Sherry nodded and gave Leon a hug while Jake gave him a pat on the shoulder, saying nothing else as the two went to leave.
"Oh, by the way Jake, you owe Jill twenty bucks," he says, chuckling as Jake cursed under his breath, slamming the door behind him, Sherry hanging back as she heard Aliya start talking.
"So, want to tell me what happened last night?" Aliya asks as Leon turned his attention to the pre-teen, who still had her arms crossed as if she was a disappointed parent who just caught her child coming home past curfew. She wasn't wearing her contacts since it was the weekend and her burgundy eyes almost scared Leon with how red they looked.
"Well, Helena broke her arm last night and she had to stay at the infirmary for observation."
Aliya briefly looked away, "Trevor called me, and he was crying. Want to know why?"
Here we go.
Leon had hoped that he'd have more time to think about what he was going to tell Aliya, but he also wasn't surprised that Trevor told her right away since the two had become inseparable since Aliya started at the school. Leon watched as Aliya got up, pacing around their living room.
"Sherry brought me to get coffee with her this morning and you know, on the way there we passed by Trevor's house, and we saw people there and they were wearing, you guessed it, C.A.T. Co uniforms. Then he called me while you were upstairs with Helena. His dad is dead, what the hell happened?" she asks, phrasing the question more forcefully this time.
"Well," he starts, this time it was his turn to sit down, "while at C.A.T. Co we found that Natalia was using Trevor and his mother against Phil. He was about to kill Helena so_"
Aliya cut him off, "so you killed him!?"
"Yeah, I did."
"You didn't even try and talk him down?" she asks naively, raising her voice.
"Of course I did and believe me, there was no talking him down. You'll realize once you're older and have your own family that you will do whatever it takes to protect them."
Aliya scoffed, grabbing her bag off the kitchen table.
"Where are you going?"
"To comfort my best friend. Is that a fucking problem?"
Leon flinched at her use of words, this being the first time that he heard her use such vulgar language and he was so focused on it he almost didn't hear Sherry say that she would drop her off at Trevor's on her way home. Leon just sighed as he put his head in his hands, contemplating what he was going to do.
Aliya looked out the window as Sherry drove her to Trevor's. She had only been with Helena and Leon for roughly a month, but she didn't think she had ever been so mad in her short life at anyone, not even at all the doctors that had to forcefully hold her down while doing different kinds of tests because she knew they were just doing their job.
"You know that Leon was just doing his job, right?" Sherry asks, breaking the awkward silence between the two.
"I don't care. He could have found another way."
"Well, sometimes there is no other way. You know, my father was a scientist and his work ultimately killed him, well, our friend Claire killed him, and you want to know why?"
Aliya stayed silent.
"She needed to save me, and I do not hold that against her one bit because she did it partly to save me. That's what Leon was doing, protecting you and Helena."
"Look Sherry, I know what you're trying to do, and I appreciate it, but I don't want to talk about it."
"You know, Redfield killed my father and I used to be pissed at him for it too and I didn't know my father. Your friend may find out one day about how his dad died, and he may not take it well, but he'll probably get over it like I did." Jake says, finally speaking up and offering his two cents to the tween.
"Yeah, but Trevor actually knew his dad and was close with him." The girl says as they pulled up outside Trevor's house and got out of Sherry's car, "thanks for the ride." she adds, closing the door behind her.
"Man, when that kid finds out it's going to be messy." Jake says, watching as Aliya knocked on the door and disappeared inside when Trevor's bawling mother answered the door.
Sherry sighed, "I know."
