It was a quiet night in the M&M household. Well, as quiet as Imp City usually is. Millie and Moxxie were fast asleep in their bed when all of a sudden, a shout was heard.
"Mommy! Daddy!" The voice said in distress. This instantly woke them up, for they recognized the voice as their son, Jessie. They rushed over to their children's room and saw Amanda, their daughter, standing next to Jessie who was under the covers of his bed.
"Jessie, what's wrong sweetie?" Moxxie said as he sat down on the bed.
"I-I'm fine." the 5-year-old replied.
"He's crying," Amanda said, concerned for her brother.
"Tattletale!" Jessie said as he came out from under the covers, revealing the tears coming down his eyes.
Millie kneeled next to her son. "It's ok, pumpkin. Ya can tell us."
Jessie looked away for a bit, not wanting to show tears to his mother. He then took a quick glance at Millie and then Moxxie, who responded with a smile. Jessie broke down and hugged his father.
"I… I had a dream… where you two went to work… and you didn't come back! I looked all over… over Uncle Blitz's work for you, but… but I couldn't find you. It was soooo scaaaarrryyyy!"
Moxxie caressed the boy's hair as he cried. "There, there, you're ok. We're right here." Millie soon joined in on caressing his back.
"I-I don't want you to die!" Jessie cried.
"We ain't gonna die, Pumpkin. You know why?"
Jessie sniffed, "W-why?"
"Because me and your pa love each other very much. And that love is so strong that it makes us unkillable."
"L-like a shield?"
"Kind of, but it doesn't just protect us. It makes us better at killin', so the bad guys don't know what hit 'em'!
Moxxie nodded, "In fact, it's gotten stronger since we had you and Amanda!"
"Really!?" Jessie pulled away from his dad, the sadness replaced with awe.
"Indeed, the thought of seeing you two smile as we come home gives us the strength to kill even the most powerful of baddies."
"Wow!" Jessie said. Amanda was also taken in by what her Dad said.
Millie pinched her son's cheek. "The next time ya worry about this again, just know that we're fighting our way home to ya, no matter how many people we have to kill."
"Ok, Mommy," Jessie said as he tucked himself in. "I'm sorry for being scared."
"Pumpkin, there's nothin' wrong with bein' scared. We get scared too."
"R-really?"
"Many times." Moxxie said, "Expressing how you feel doesn't make you weak, if anything it makes you stronger."
"Um… Jessie." Amanda said as she walked up to her brother. She was holding her stuffed toy, Mister Bubbles, also known as A Thing by Millie and Moxxie. "When I get scared, Mister Bubbles helps me relax. Do you want to sleep with him tonight?"
Jessie thought for a bit, then took the stuffed toy from his sister. "Thank you." He said as he held him close to his chest.
"That was real nice of ya, honey bunches," Millie said as she pat Amanda's head. "Now you two get to bed."
The children said their I love yous before heading to their beds. Millie put her arms around her husband as they watched their adorable children drift to sleep. Aside from each other, their children were the most precious thing to Millie and Moxxie, and they would do whatever it took to make sure they came back safe and sound to them.
