Day 1 – Beach/Training
Roxas is getting his ass handed to him on a silver platter.
In other words, he is not doing so well in training today. The majority of the group is at Disney Castle for a week of training. They've been here a couple of days only, the first day being a reunion of sorts. No training, just stories, memories, and laughter.
That had been the first day in a month Roxas had seen Kairi. He had missed his girlfriend, off being the perfect princess of Radiant Garden while he was stuck on missions with Axel and Xion. Video calls were not sufficient dates in his opinion. He couldn't even kiss her goodnight!
They made up for that last night.
"Roxas, wake up!"
Roxas barely registers the keyblade flying at his face in time to block it. He redirects the energy and manages to stumble back.
"Are you even trying? Get your head in the game!" Axel calls from the sidelines.
"Sorry, sorry." Roxas shakes his head and rolls his shoulders. He looks at his opponent. Sora has his head tilted questioningly. "Sorry."
"You good?" Sora asks.
"Yeah, yeah. I'm fine. Just lost in thought." Good thoughts. Wonderful thoughts. Thoughts he will lock away as beautiful memories for the rest of his life.
The young man shakes his head again and gets in his ready stance. They've barely started training. He has a long day ahead. A long day before he can see Kairi again.
Kairi…
She is currently with Queen Minnie and Donald, working on her magic. A whole three rooms away. Her brow probably wrinkled with concentration. Her hair falling in front of her eyes. He could brush that hair back and it would still be as smooth and silky as always.
He ran his hand through her hair several times last night to memorize its texture for the next time they have to be apart. But it was one of many different sensations he committed to memory. The feel of her lips against his. The smooth skin of her thigh. The feel of her heavy breath in his ear.
Roxas is dragged once again out of his thoughts when Sora's keyblade nearly connects itself with his face. Inches. Just inches away.
"Come on! You're better than this!" Axel shouts at him once more.
"You can do it, Roxas!" Xion gives additional encouragement.
No, Roxas doesn't think he can. He's just…too happy. He doesn't feel like fighting. He doesn't feel his usual fire. The burning that drives him went from hatred early on, to determination at proving he is his own person with his own heart, and finally purpose with protecting his loved ones—his family.
But his family is safely here. His hatred from being hurt so many years ago can no longer be rekindled. No one is in danger. He can't find any drive to give his all in training. He knows the King will be here soon and frown at his lack of drive. Training should be taken seriously—
—but why train when so many other beautiful things are worth his time?
He and Kairi have not been together very long. Three months, and one of those months was spent apart. Their relationship was just starting to go deeper when they were separated. The emotional aspect was something they could continue through video chats, but not the physical aspect. So excuse Roxas for wanting to think of the super-hot makeout session they had last night instead of paying attention to the gruesome and monotonous training he has to deal with now.
And so his mind wanders. Remembering gravity pulling them together. Whispers of "I've missed you" and "I love you" still ring in his ears. Kairi sighing his name. Him holding her tight, making sure she is there and not a figment of his imagination. With him, loving him like he loves her.
And that was a thought too far from his current situation. Roxas finds himself on the floor. The ceiling above spins. Sora soon comes into view. He offers a hand up. Roxas reluctantly takes it.
"Are you alright?" Sora asks quickly.
Roxas sighs. "Yeah, I'm fine. Lost concentration."
"No kidding."
Roxas hears Axel's bereavement and knows he will get an earful the second he moves to the sidelines. Roxas is making his way over when he notices a door open across the courtyard. Three figures walk through, one with hair a red shade he would recognize anywhere.
Before he consciously acknowledges his actions, he is running up to Kairi. Queen Minnie and Donald wisely take a step back. When he reaches her, Roxas picks her up around the waist and spins her once. He sets her down and kisses her.
"I've missed you," he says, very aware of how mushy he is sounding with a dopey grin to match the words.
But Kairi's laughter keeps any insecurity at bay. "I've missed you too. It's been a long morning."
"Hey, wanna watch my match?" Roxas already has her hand in his and is pulling her further into the courtyard.
"Absolutely!"
"Sora!" Roxas calls to him. "I want a rematch!"
The others look skeptical, all but Axel whose eyes are on Kairi, a cheeky grin on his face. Sora agrees, though. He moves to the middle of the open area.
Roxas turns, takes Kairi's face in his hands, and kisses her once more, firmly. "For good luck," he tells her before heading to Sora.
He has a feeling his drive is back and this rematch will be a little more even.
My first contribution to Roxiri Week 2021. It is dedicated to the wonderful people on the Roxiri discord who are all wonderful! When I saw training as a prompt, this popped in my brain and wouldn't leave. I'm almost embarrassed to publish it, but here goes nothing. Enjoy! I'll be back for tomorrow's addition.
