Eddie had found out about Rachel's asthma two weeks ago. He'd seen the severity of it with his own eyes.
Two weeks ago…
They'd been in her office, just having a meeting, when suddenly, she couldn't breathe. Something in the air had triggered it. Dust particles, the scent of the new air freshener she'd bought. Anything could have triggered it.
Whatever it was had caused a major reaction. Out of nowhere, she was wheezing, breathing heavily, clutching and clawing at her chest. Eddie had shot up, rushing to her side. He'd never forget the panicked look in her eyes as she'd gripped his arm tightly.
"Rachel? What's wrong?" He'd asked, silently pleading with her to let him help
He'd watched as she pointed weakly to her handbag. He grabbed it, passing it to her. She looked through it slowly, her wheezing growing heavier until she found what she was looking for. A blue inhaler. Eddie had a million scenarios running through his head as to what could have been wrong with Rachel. Asthma hadn't been one of them.
Eddie helped her to take the cap off, watching as she inhaled through it every 30-60 seconds. Her breathing became a little less wheezy with every puff of the inhaler.
After 10 minutes, her breathing had improved significantly, but not enough. Eddie had taken her to the hospital to be checked, as she was still wheezing and a little breathless. It was in the waiting room that she'd told him about her asthma, the almost silent battle she'd had with it from the age of four or five. She'd told him how anything and everything could trigger it, including a few stories where, if she'd not got to the hospital in time, she could have died.
Eddie had been surprised at the revelation. In the six months that he had known and worked with her, she had always seemed so headstrong, unfazed by any challenge thrown her way. Yet her asthma had seemed to have beat her more than a few times.
It appeared not everyone was invincible, including Rachel Mason.
