Chapter 1 - Nightmares

"Darkness...why is it all I can see?" Kyle's voice echoed in his head, he looked around himself, only to stare into the darkness. Something was wrong, he felt almost ill, he grabbed his head as the world felt like it was spinning. He heard strange whispers as he gathered the courage to slowly walk towards the sound. He hoped he could find anyone. Slowly, a dim blue light was forming before him. Kyle stopped as a campfire was before him, an ominous blue flame was dancing around the wood. Beyond the flame, a hooded figure sat. A strange symbol etched on the robe, just as blue as the flames. They beckoned for Kyle to sit down across from them. He took a moment to look over the person; they looked male, but being under those robes it could have been a woman as well.

"Welcome child." His voice sounded frail and old. "You don't know me but we are connected, a long shared history between us." As the robed figure spoke, Kyle began to shiver. He felt as if he was freezing, and that was when he noticed his own breath could be seen as if it was a winter day. "Our time is short young Coinin, we will finish early." The old man slowly raised himself from his sitting position, it was eerie. Fear filled Kyle, but no matter how hard he tried to run, his legs wouldn't move. Through the flames, a short dagger was drawn from underneath his sleeve. As the old man slowly walked forward, Kyle couldn't run or fight. All he could do was stare at that dagger until the robed figure stood before him. With a sudden movement of his arm, the man thrusts the dagger into Kyle's chest. The pain was sudden but only lasted for a second or so before his eyes shot open.

Kyle grabbed for the dagger, only to find nothing there. As he sat up, now back in his bedroom, he looked out the window to see that the sun had risen. He had slept in late, due to training late into the previous night. "That nightmare again," He muttered quietly.

"Still having that nightmare little brother?" Kyle quickly turned his head to the door of his room, to see his older brother Flynn.

"Flynn?! What are you doing back in Siren?" Kyle asked. He was shocked to see his brother here, last he had heard Flynn was in Atlas.

"What, can't a guy come home to visit his little brother?" he laughed, as he walked inside Kyle's room and sat down on his bed. Flynn then reached forward and began to mess up his hair. "But you didn't answer my question...is it the same nightmare? Just like the one when we were younger?"

Kyle nodded his head slowly. "The same nightmare, but he spoke differently this time." Flynn tilted his head curiously. "He talked about how we have a long history together...what does he mean?"

Flynn pats his younger brother's back to reassure him, "That is strange, the old man never spoke about anyone like that. I mean I know a lot of people tend to not like our family...but not like this." He smiled and placed a hand on Kyle's shoulder. "How about I show you what a real Hunter fights like? You are going to need practice before you leave for Beacon, I'm sure."

Kyle stood up from his bed, grabbing his weapon from his desk. A longsword he had named Moon's Shimmer. "I'm going to surpass you, Flynn Coinin," he declared with a smile.

"Well, Flynn Coinin will still kick your ass up and down the old man's stomping grounds," Flynn laughed back.

It wasn't long before the Coinin brothers were out the door of the Coinin homestead, most of the village had gathered to see Flynn. "Oh my, it's true, Flynn came home today!" The woman who ran the local inn said with a smile on her face.

"Look at the Coinin brothers, imagine what both of Siren's wolves will do once Kyle is a hunter," another person said over the crowd.

Kyle laughed as he looked up at his brother, "I guess you are still pretty popular around here."
"Nope this is for both of us, the people remember what the old man did for them back in the day. They also know he taught us everything we know, the only difference between us is that I finished my time at Beacon a long time ago. Now it's your time to live that life. I mean, if Ozpin lets me in, then I know he will let you in as well." Flynn couldn't stop smiling.

The brothers took some time to speak with the villagers. Afterwards they left the village and made their way towards the training ground set up by the head of the Coinin family, Oliver. His stomping grounds still had many of the targets that all of them had used over the years. Flynn smirked, as he slammed his trident to the ground, "So little brother, let's see how strong you have gotten since I left." Unlike Kyle's longsword, Flynn's trident was old school, it didn't have a built-in firearm. Lucky for him, he kept a revolver holstered on the hip. A little gift from the love of his life, Winter Schnee.

Kyle didn't waste a moment as he drew Moon's Shimmer from its sheath, "I hope that with all the fancy moves you learned in Beacon, you haven't forgotten what dad taught you."

Flynn's smirk didn't leave his face as he lunged forward and swung his trident over his head. Kyle was able to dodge the swing easily, due to his semblance, precognition. When attacked, he could see attacks and movements within his field of vision, a few seconds before they happened. He stabbed his blade just over the top fork of his brother's trident to hold it done. "I see you've come into your Semblance, shame it won't do you much good." he smiled and snapped his fingers, and a thick black smoke swarmed around Kyle's head. His aura couldn't stop it, as he coughed and his vision blurred from pain.

"What the hell!?" Kyle shouted in pain, as he closed his eyes to keep the smoke out. Leaving himself open, he felt the end of his brother's trident go behind his leg. With a simple pull, Kyle lost his balance and landed face-down in the dirt. Flynn stepped on his younger brother's back, pinning him to the ground.

"If you want to make it you need to do better, little brother. Also helps to know that your enemies will have Semblances as well." With that, he lifted the trident back up.

Suddenly Kyle tightened his grip on Moon's Shimmer and slammed the hilt of it into his knee. Flynn wasn't expecting that, and, with his focus slightly off, the younger Coinin rolled to the side, getting back to his feet. Still recovering from the smoke semblance of his brother, Kyle rushed him blindly and tackled him to the ground. Flynn kicked Kyle off of him and sat down next to his younger brother. Flynn opened a small water bottle and began to pour it over his brother's eyes. After a minute, the burning was gone and he could see again. "You should also know I'm bigger and stronger, trying to out strength me isn't an option," Flynn spoke softly as he knocked his brother on the head.

Kyle pushed Flynn as they began to walk together over to a large tree. This tree was special, as all the Coinin siblings had used it to measure their height over the years. Sitting down, Kyle smiled. "Flynn...how long are you going to be home?"

Flynn laughed, "What, trying to get rid of me already?"

"What? No! I just mean...with me leaving and with dad gone, Siren needs someone to protect it." Kyle mentioned.

Flynn just smiled "Wow, even at sixteen I can still tease you."

Kyle punched his arm, "Ass."

He placed his hands to his cheeks and did an overacted gasp, "My brother said a bad word! I can't believe it. Don't worry about Siren, I will be here until the old man returns."

The brothers laughed together but slowly grew silent. They could hear footsteps coming towards them. "No...no no no." The strange symbol on the robe was the same as the figure from Kyle's nightmares. He shot up with Moon's Shimmer in his hands.

"Calm down boy, I'm not here for you yet. I'm here for the adolescent wolf...not the wolf pup." The man lifted his arms and two Beowolves leaped in from behind him.

Flynn smiled, "Tidal Rage could use a good workout...stand back little wolf."

Flynn readied himself with Tidal Rage in one hand and Snow Fall in the other. Kyle pushed past and stood side by side with his brother. "I'm not going to stand aside while you are outnumbered, and don't call me little wolf!"

Flynn laughed again, "You will understand soon, sometimes you have to fight alone...just like dad." Flynn lunged forward; slashing his trident from left to right, he struck the neck of the first Beowolf. He swung around, his revolver trained on the robed man, as he pulled the trigger. The robed man grabbed Flynn through his sleeve by the wrist. He was shockingly strong, as he ran, he forced Flynn to run with him. The second Beowolf snarled as it leaped past Kyle and ran towards the village.

Kyle hesitated for a moment, debating on if he should chase down the Beowolf or go after his brother. "No time." He turned back and ran for the village.

By the time he got there, the Beowolf had already smashed through a house and destroyed the general store. The Beowolf loomed over a little girl that was cowering on the floor, her cries only drawing in the Grimm. Kyle ran forward. Folding the blade of his sword back, he switched it from its sword form to its rifle form. Shooting three times, hitting it in the side, the Beowolf turned and focused its gaze on Kyle. This lets the girl escape. He kept firing, both the hunter and the beast were now charging at each other. Pulling the hilt back, he flipped the sword back out as he slid under the beast, cutting its legs out from under it. The beast turned on a dime and swung its left paw, The blade of Moon's Shimmer managed to slip in between the first and second claw, and using his free hand he pulled on the hilt and guard as it bent down he pulled the trigger as it dropped down. The bullet ripped through the Beowolf's neck and the beast fell to the ground.

The robed man leaped past Kyle, his dagger out and bloodied. A burning rage built in Kyle as he ran at the man, a blue flame slowly forming around him. The flame ran up a small trail leading to a home. Kyle didn't notice in time, as he passed by the building it suddenly erupted in flames, something inside exploding. The shock wave sent him flying through the inn's window. He crashed through a support pillar, which caused a part of the building to collapse and fall on top of him. Then, everything went black.

Kyle gripped his head, as he slowly began to regain consciousness. He had no idea how much time had passed as he pushed the wood that covered him off him. As he wiped his face, he noticed that it was soaked from rainwater. He struggled to his feet as he stumbled over to the window he crashed through. It took a minute for all of this to sink in when he saw what had happened. Some buildings still burning, dead villagers were on the ground, and two more Beowolves had followed up the carnage. Thankfully, holding them back was his brother, his trident jammed in the mouth of one and the staff portion jammed in the other's mouth, as he struggled to keep them in place. Blood was dripping from a wound on his shoulder.

Rushing forward, Kyle stabbed the one to the right of his brother through the neck. "About time you showed up, Little Wolf." Flynn gasped, as he reached down. He drew Snow Fall, unloading all six rounds into the chest of the Beowolf, then ripped his trident free from the mouth of the other Beowolf as it fell to the ground.

"Sorry, the man...he caught me off guard, it won't happen again," Kyle answered, a little ashamed of himself, as he removed his sword from the neck of the beast. Suddenly, Flynn grabbed his head, stumbled for a moment, and then fell. Kyle quickly dropped his sword and caught Flynn as he fell back. "Flynn?!"

Flynn laughed, "Looks like I pushed myself a little too hard."

His laughter stopped as one last hate-filled howl echoed in their ears, and a Beowolf leaped down from the rooftops. This one was much larger than the other ones. "Kyle, listen to me...you need to run. I will hold it off, the Mayor got word to Beacon. I can hold out until they get here."

"Don't lie to me. You can't even stand anymore," Kyle stated as he set his brother down. Lifting Moon's Shimmer in one hand and his brother's Snow Fall in the other, he stood in front of his brother. "If I die protecting you and the others, then I die as a true Coinin.'' Kyle ran forward, firing at the Alpha Beowolf. Successfully getting its attention, the beast began to chase him out of the village. He barely made it before he had to turn and fight. With the help of his Semblance, he managed to leap over its first sweep, however, its second sweep caught and tripped him up. Thankfully, his aura protected him from the claw digging into him. It loomed over Kyle, unleashing a vile howl as it opened its jaw. He quickly pulled the trigger on Snow Fall and followed it up by thrusting Moon's Shimmer through the chest of the Alpha Beowolf. Its claw dug into the ground as its life began to fade. Kyle fell down next to the body as it slowly evaporated, leaving him alone while the cooling rain fell down.

"Oh, so you're The Old Wolf's youngest pup."

Kyle opened his eyes and turned to see someone standing next to him. A man with silver hair and a cool-looking coat. "Pup?! I'm not a pup," he grumbled as he got to his feet quickly and stared into the stranger's eyes.

The man just laughed, "Come, we have much to talk about."

The trip back to the village was quiet, Kyle thought the old man would explain who he was or what was happening, but it was just quiet as they walked into what remained of the village. Once inside, he saw his brother talking to some woman: "Ah, Glynda, I see you found the adolescent wolf", the old man said.

"Come on Ozpin, aren't I a little old to be an adolescent wolf?" Flynn asked, laughing a little.

"You took on an unknown threat who could control Grimm, I think that shows you are still an adolescent, Mr. Coinin." the woman said, shaking her head.

"Look, we will talk later about it, you saved my brother and that is what is important." Flynn was relieved.

"I did no such thing, he saved himself."

"So, what did you want to talk about?"

"Well, as you know the Coinin family have had ties to Beacon Academy for a while and since the old wolf and I have never been on the best of terms, I have come out to personally invite you to Beacon Academy," Ozpin explained.

"Little Wolf listen to me, you are going to Beacon to join them, to train as a hunter. Just like dad, Ashe, and I did." Flynn laughed, elbowing his younger brother.

"Until further notice, Hunter Flynn Coinin will be stationed in this area, until the time comes that the village is deemed safe." the woman spoke in a rushed tone.

"Ah, I'll miss you too Glynda." he teased, as she gave him a sharp glare.

"I believe we are finished here," Glynda stated.

"You are right, come pup, we leave for Beacon."

"You will make it Little Wolf, and you will be just like all Coinin."
