Chapter 1: Back on the grid

Lost in the depths of time, the man in black and white pondered, uncertain of the duration that had elapsed. Was it a year? Perhaps ten or even twenty? The passage of time eluded him, as though it could have been an eternity without his notice. He ascended a set of stairs in a dimly lit room, his attire blending seamlessly with the shadows. Adorned in an all-black full body suit, black gloves, and a worn white hooded trench coat, he exuded an air of mystery.

Eventually, he reached what appeared to be an exit and cautiously opened the door, ensuring no sound escaped as it widened, allowing light to spill into the obscure surroundings. Silently departing his sanctuary, he shut the door behind him, gazing at the external world from which he had concealed himself for an indeterminate period.

'Now it's time to explore the unfamiliar and remain informed,' he contemplated. Taking a few steps forward, the man seamlessly merged with the environment, leaving no trace of his presence.

...

Shinto Teito, Year 2020

'So this is Shinto Teito, formerly the city of Tokyo? I wonder what happened to cause such change?'

Contemplating the transformed cityscape before him, the man clad in white and black perched atop a building, overlooking the bustling streets below. As he observed the ceaseless flow of cars and people, he couldn't help but wonder about the events that had led to the metamorphosis of Tokyo into Shinto Teito.

Maintaining his composure despite the unexpected turn of events, he sought to make sense of his new reality. Yet, his attempts to unravel the mysteries surrounding him proved fruitless thus far. 'Perhaps it's time to descend to ground level,' he mused, acknowledging that the rooftops alone wouldn't unveil all the answers he sought.

In an instant, he moved away from the edge of the building and found himself on the ground, now adorned in a noticeably more refined white hooded trench coat. Seamlessly blending into the crowd of commuters and passersby, he went unnoticed by those around him. The man gradually made his way to an electronics store, its display windows adorned with gleaming televisions.

"Maybe I can gather some information from the TVs here," he pondered, hoping to glean insights from the screens within.

"And in other breaking news Hiroto Minaka, the President of MBI has bought up 80% of all Shinto Teito stocks..." Fixing his gaze upon one of the televisions in the display, the man beheld an image of a figure with disheveled white hair, donning glasses, a white suit, and a flowing white cape, seated in a regal manner upon a chair. It appeared as though this enigmatic individual exuded an air of authority and power. Intrigued by the spectacle, the man in the white hooded trench coat disregarded the other news segments playing on the screens.

Resuming his seamless integration into the bustling crowd, he continued his unobtrusive journey through the city. Merging effortlessly with the ebb and flow of pedestrians, he remained inconspicuous to those around him, a mere face in the crowd.

As he absorbed the news, a sense of cynicism welled up within the man. The ostentatious display and perceived arrogance of the individual on the television screen prompted him to remark, 'Someone's overcompensating for his douchebaggery. And this MBI, essentially acquiring a significant stake in Japan. How quaint.'

The information triggered memories of past experiences, where large corporations had taken control of cities, leading to disastrous consequences. He couldn't help but lament the apparent failure of people to grasp the inherent dangers associated with the dominance of corporate entities over countries and municipalities.

'Will they ever learn that nothing good comes from such acquisitions?' he pondered. However, swiftly dismissing the matter, he reaffirmed his disinterest, declaring, 'Whatever, not my problem. If they willingly subject themselves to the manipulation of corporations like MBI, which I know will eventually betray them, they'll have no one to blame but themselves.'

With a detached perspective, the man chose not to involve himself in the impending turmoil, acknowledging that the consequences would fall squarely on those who willingly embraced such a perilous path.

Continuing his stride amidst the bustling crowd, the hooded man became aware of an unexpected presence tailing him. Surprised by this development, he pondered the possibilities. Having taken precautions to avoid drawing attention to himself, he couldn't fathom how anyone had managed to perceive his presence. Moreover, he was certain that it wasn't the two individuals he had previously thought. Determined to either lose his pursuer or confront them directly, he decided to take action.

Swiftly slipping away from the crowd, he seamlessly melded into the shadows of a nearby alley, disappearing without a trace. Re-emerging atop a nearby building, he peered down onto the street he had left behind, searching for any sign of the person tailing him. Finding no immediate indication of their presence, he exhaled a sigh of relief, allowing himself a brief moment of respite.

'Perhaps I'm becoming paranoid,' he contemplated, acknowledging that his extended seclusion from society may have contributed to his heightened wariness. Yet, his sense of unease returned as he once again detected the familiar presence. This time, it emanated from the rooftop of the adjacent building. Sensing the person's stealthy prowess and adeptness at utilizing the shadows, he recognized that it was a skilled and agile woman.

"So, you know a thing or two about stealth," he mused. "But let's see how you fare against a ghost."

Stepping into the shadow cast by the rooftop entrance, he vanished from the woman's sight, leaving her perplexed. She swiftly leaped to the building he had been on, scanning the surroundings in an attempt to locate him, but her efforts proved futile. He had vanished right before her eyes, akin to a phantom. Feeling the rush of anticipation and challenge, the woman placed a hand over her rapidly beating heart. It was an open invitation, a daring declaration by the man, challenging her to find him if she could.

With determination burning within her, the woman embraced the challenge presented by her target's disappearing act. Like a phantom herself, she dissolved into the shadows, matching the evasive tactics of the man she pursued. Thoughts raced through her mind as she remained steadfast in her pursuit, firmly believing that it was only a matter of time before she found him, addressing him in her thoughts as Ashikabi-sama.

Meanwhile, the man re-emerged in an alley, his attention drawn to the building where the encounter with the enigmatic woman had transpired. Puzzled and intrigued, he pondered the identity of this mysterious individual who possessed the same skill to traverse and conceal themselves within the shadows. It had been his belief that he was the sole possessor of such abilities, making her existence all the more intriguing.

As the sun began its descent, casting elongated shadows across the city, the man became aware of the approaching nightfall, his favorite time of day. With a knowing grin concealed beneath his hood, he relished the prospect of darkness enveloping the surroundings. The cover of night granted him unparalleled freedom, allowing him to explore his new environment, uncovering its prominent locations and securing a place to call his own.

"Night is coming," he whispered, anticipation coursing through his veins. "It will be the perfect time for me to venture forth, to explore this Shinto Teito, all while finding a sanctuary of my own."
