SCENE 6

EXT. HOUSE OF WARRIORS - UNDERGROUND HALLWAY

Mirabel and the group ran down the hallway towards the exit of the building.

ALONSO

Wait, my grandfather didn't lock the villagers in the dungeon, but at the barracks? I counted that there were enough spaces to put them down here. Why would he change locations?

MIRABEL

How should I know? Your grandfather only stated he wanted to make her suffer as he did.

ALONSO

That could mean anything. Unfortunately, my grandfather had various instruments to perform diabolical acts during his expeditions, so it doesn't narrow it down as much as I hope.

LUISA

Besides our grandmother, we still need to rescue our parents.

ISABELA

Dolores, do you know where they are?

DOLORES

I hear them, but I don't hear Abuela Alma.

ALONSO

She must be outside in another location. If that is the case, it may be best to split into two teams.

ANTONIO

I don't want to be separated from everyone again.

CAMILO

I hate to admit it, but the lover boy is right. With a big group like us, the enemy could easily capture us.

ISABELA

How should we divide everyone?

MIRABEL

Dolores, take Antonio and Camilo and find our parents. Luisa, go with them in case things get ugly.

LUISA

I'll take care of them.

DOLORES

But what about the rest of you?

MIRABEL

Don't worry. We have Isa. She'll protect us.

ISABELA

Do you still trust me after everything I've done?

MIRABEL

Well, you are my older sister. It's not like we've never fought before. Besides, isn't the older sibling's duty to protect the younger sibling?

DOLORES

Alright, Isa, we'll leave them to you.

CAMILO

Don't screw this up.

ANTONIO

Be careful, everyone.

LUISA

Be safe and make good choices.

MIRABEL

Come on, it's us. What could go wrong?

As they ran, they came across Sebastián, who patrolled the hallway.

SEBASTIÁN

(shocked) How did all of you escape?!

Sebastián readied his sword and prepared to confront them.

ISABELA

Oh no, you don't!

Isabela quickly grew various vines underneath Sebastián's feet, causing him to fall backward. The vines began to bind him to the ground.

SEBASTIÁN

Not this again!

ISABELA

(To Dolores and her group) Find our parents. We will take care of this.

Listening to her, Luisa and the others ran past the fallen Sebastián towards another hallway.

SEBASTIÁN

Hey, come back here. You're not supposed to escape.

Before Sebastián could speak further, Isabela wrapped the vines around his mouth and stood above him.

ISABELA

Hello there. Remember me, traitor? I want to make another deal with you. And this time, there will be no backstabbing. You hear me?

Sebastián struggled as Mirabel and Alonso walked up to them.

ALONSO

(To Mirabel) Have they met?

MIRABEL

(To Alonso) It's a complicated thing they have.

ALONSO

(To Sebastián) Sebastián, what are you doing down here? Aren't you usually at Abuelo's side? According to Dolores, he's most likely not here. Why did he put you on guard duty? Aren't there enough soldiers to scout the halls already?

SEBASTIÁN

(After Isabela released the vines around his mouth) You ask too many questions. How should I know? He's probably hogging the glory all to himself, as usual. I do what he says without question, something you should have done, too.

MIRABEL

That's not true. People make decisions on their own terms, regardless of what others order them to do. That's no different than living someone else's life. Is standing under the shadow of your grandfather where you want to be for the rest of your life?

Sebastián turned away from Mirabel.

ALONSO

Sebastián, you and I know something doesn't sit right. This event is way too elaborate, even by Abuelo's standards. You know something, don't you? Can you tell us where Abuelo is?

Sebastián remained quiet.

ALONSO

Can you tell us where Abuelo is, please?

END OF ACT 9

ACT 10

SCENE 1

EXT. VILLAGE - VARIOUS LOCATIONS – NIGHT

Abuela Alma took a deep breath, staring with dignity at what lay ahead. She slowly walked up creaking old steps up a wooden platform where a wooden table, a bucket, and an executioner stood. The townspeople watched as the soldiers brought Abuela towards the table. Abuela Alma looked out towards the crowd. While she knew none of them, she felt a connection with them in some way. The villagers expected an evil, hideous figure, not a humble elder. They wanted to do something, but the soldiers guarding the platform prevented them from doing anything suspicious.

Soon, Abuela Alma was placed on the table, her head above the cold bucket. Señor Gonzalo slowly walked towards Abuela Alma with a torch in hand.

SEÑOR GONZALO

Finally, we end this chase once and for all, witch.

ABUELA ALMA

You may do whatever you wish to me, but you will never break the spirit of Encanto. Our story will continue to burn bright forever. What about yours?

Señor Gonzalo gritted his teeth as he turned to the crowd.

SEÑOR GONZALO

My people! After decades of searching and plotting, we have finally captured the one who started the misery of our kind: the rabid witch!

While the soldiers cheered, the townspeople looked around, frightened and unsure whether what came next was the right thing to do. Abuela Amla remained undeterred. As Señor Gonzalo continued to speak of the crimes Abuela Alma committed, Bruno realized he was running out of time. Putting his bucket on, he sneaked behind one of the soldiers patrolling the barracks.

BRUNO

(loudly) Boo!

The soldier jumped and turned around.

SOLDIER

(After calming down) Hey, wait a minute!

Before the soldier did anything, the rats crawled up his body, tickling him. During the soldier's fit, Bruno knocked him with his trowel. Grabbing keys from the soldier's pocket, Bruno ran toward a nearby barracks and unlocked the door. The villagers turned to see what had happened.

PUMPED JUANCHO

Who's that?

LITTLE ALEJANDRA

It's Bruno!

INNOCENT CECILIA

He's rescuing us!

BRUNO

Calm down, niños. We're not safe yet.

MARIANO

Where's everyone else? Is Dolores safe?

BRUNO

I'm not sure, but my family is strong-willed. I'm sure they're okay, except for Mama Alma. She's about to be…

Bruno quickly drew a line through his neck with his finger.

MARIANO

How can we help?

BRUNO

I'll try to get Abuela Alma out as quickly as I can. The rest of you focus on escaping and returning to Encanto. Mariano, you take the kids and open as many doors as possible. Here is the master key. Everyone else, follow me. Once I find more guards with keys, I'll give those keys to you to open the rest of the doors. The sooner we free everyone, the faster you can escape. Now, let's go!

Bruno and the villagers searched for more keys to open more doors quickly. Meanwhile, Mariano and the children used the master key to open as many doors as possible so the villagers could escape. Soon, everyone was free from the barracks and ran to where Bruno sneaked into the town. However, when they got there, guards were waiting for them. Bruno tried to turn the crowd around to find another way out, but more guards were following them from behind. Soon, the soldiers surrounded the villagers with their swords.

SCENE 2

Rather than returning them to the barracks, the soldiers led the villagers to the viewing area by the platform, where they would watch everything unfold. The townspeople quietly parted as the villagers spotted Abuela Alma lying on the table.

BRUNO

(concerned) Mamá.

ABUELA ALMA

(Noticing the voice in the crowd) Bruno?

SEÑOR GONZALO

Finally, all the pieces have gathered. (To the crowd) And now, the moment you have been waiting for. It is time to be rid of this curse once and for all. It is time to remove the witch!

The soldiers cheered as the executioner lifted the axe in the air. Bruno and Mariano tried to push through, but the soldiers would not let them.

ALONSO (v.o.)

(shouting) Stop!

Everyone paused to turn to the voice. Alonso, Mirabel, Isabela, and Sebastian stood at a nearby cliff. Bruno and the villagers were relieved that they were safe.

SEÑOR GONZALO

They escaped?! Sebastián, you were supposed to keep them at bay!

SEBASTIÁN

Sorry, Abuelo, but plans have changed.

MIRABEL

Citizens of this town, please gaze upon my grandmother. Does she look like the ones you have claimed to hear in your stories? She is just a woman trying to protect her family from harm, like the monster who speaks ill of our Abuela.

SEÑOR GONZALO

I am no monster. She and all who came after her are.

ALONSO

Like some of you here, Abuela Alma tried to run away when Senor Gonzalo ransacked her village, the town you now call home. This horrible misdeed is not the first time he has committed such atrocious behavior. Unfortunately, it won't be the last.

MIRABEL

This lust for conquest must stop immediately before any more people are hurt, their lives ruined by a madman who only knows power. Please, I beg you, with the kindness of my heart, to save my grandmother. Save Abuela Alma!

SEÑOR GONZALO

Enough of this. (To the executioner) Drop the ax down on her immediately.

As ordered, the executioner lifted the ax into the air.

MIRABEL

Alonso, we must do something!

ALONSO

We're too high and too far away. There's no way we can make it in time.

SEBASTIÁN

You two whine too much.

Sebastián ran back a few steps and dashed towards the cliff, jumping off it.

ALONSO

Is he mad?!

MIRABEL

He's not going to make it!

ISABELA

Yes, he will!

Isabela grew several vines near Sebastian to push him far enough to knock over the executioner, knocking them both out. The ax slipped out of the executioner's hand and barely grazed Abuela Alma's face as it passed by her.

SEÑOR GONZALO

(angered) (to the soldiers on the platform) You two, take this traitor to the dungeon. I'll deal with this woman myself. (To the soldiers blocking the crowd) The rest of you, get those other kids and make sure they don't escape.

As the soldiers marched to their positions, Juancho slipped through the guards and ran towards Abuela Alma. One of the soldiers noticed this and stopped in front of Juancho, sneering at him. Although Juancho was afraid, he threw the coffee mug in his hand at the soldier, but it shattered on his armor. Laughing, the soldier pushed Juancho to the ground.

Enraged, Mariano pushed through where Juancho broke through and knocked the soldier out with his fist. The opening Mariano created allowed more people to pass through the guards to try and help Abuela Alma. Noticing this, the soldiers turned around to address the villages. Seeing the villagers resolved and moved by Alonso and Mirabel's speech, the townspeople assisted the villagers by helping them break through from the soldiers. Chaos danced along with the flames of rebellion.

ALONSO

The people are distracting the soldiers. Now's our chance.

MIRABEL

But how do we get down there safely?

ISABELA

I can take care of that.

Isabela created multiple vines alongside the cliff that act as stairs toward the platform.

ISABELA

Come on; we don't have all day.

The three of them ran down the created stairs, hoping to reach Abuela Alma in time. As they approached the platform, Isabela noticed some of the soldiers carrying Sebastián away from the scene of the chaos.

ISABELA

Keep heading towards Abuela Alma. I'll meet you as soon as I can.

MIRABEL

Where are you going?

ISABELA

I'm just making sure someone keeps their end of the deal.

As Mirabel and Alonso continued walking towards Abuela Alma, Isabela created a new set of stairs towards Sebastián. When she was close enough, Isabela grew several small shrubs to block the soldier's path. Using their confusion to her advantage, Isabela created several vines below the soldiers and dragged them towards the shrubs. She generated new shrubs in front of them to prevent them from escaping. Sebastián, who fell from the sudden actions, slowly tried to stand up but was unsteady.

ISABELA

Don't push yourself. You're still hurt.

SEBASTIÁN

You came back for me. After everything I've done, why did you do that?

ISABELA

The deal was to take us to Abuela Alma. Last I checked, you haven't brought us to her yet. I need you alive and with me if you want to keep your end of the deal.

SEBASTIÁN

You are like no woman I've ever met.

ISABELA

Let's keep it that way. Hold on to my shoulder. This deal isn't over yet.
