Her memory…
The rain pelted relentlessly against the windows of the small cabin. The night air was cold, but inside the cabin, a fire and a shared bed with Mulder kept her warm. The sound of the storm thrusted her thoughts back to the beginning.
The beginning of forever.
"Mulder, do you remember our first case together?" She asked to the ceiling before turning to face him.
"Hmhmm," Mulder responded.
Half-awake, he rolled to his side, facing Scully. She never doubted that, no matter his cognitive state, when she called his name, he listened. The sight of him still took her breath away. More so now, they were both older, but she swore he just kept getting more handsome as the years passed. His laugh lines framed his mouth, and when he spoke, they moved in sync, reminding her of all the times they laughed together.
"Of course I do. Why do you ask?" He said. He took her hand in his and kissed her knuckles lightly. Her own lips, jealous of the attention.
"I was wondering what you remembered about it," she said. His eyes searched hers. He had a way of seeing through her. Past the exterior and the insecurities, right to her soul, it was always like that—from the moment they met.
The moment they shook hands.
"Tell me, Scully, what do you remember?"
A small smile hijacked his face as he asked the question. She extended her arm and, bending at the elbow, gently cradled her head in her hand.
"I remember you. How insanely smart, insatiable, and passionate you were about finding the truth. I remember thinking you were crazy and I needed to prove you wrong."
Mulder laughed.
"Something you still try to do, and I might add, have yet to accomplish."
"Ahh, well, that's debatable," she rebutted.
Mulder leaned in and kissed her nose. "Go on," he whispered. Her belly flipped at his breath on her cheek. She closed her eyes, recalling every detail of their night in the rain.
"I remember how you looked in the rain and the feelings I had bubbling up inside of me. And I remember being scared but feeling safe at the same time."
His fingers slowly traced her arm, causing goosebumps across her body. Her memories mixed with his touch overwhelmed her senses as her past merged with her present.
"I remember thinking I'd follow you anywhere. Even if the journey and the unknown scared me, I was meant to be with you." She opened her eyes and Mulder pulled her body into his. His strong arms engulfed her in one single motion.
He kissed her forehead tenderly, forgoing any trepidation in his words: "You were and are the only person I trust completely. I know it hasn't been easy, following me into the darkness at times, but Dana , you saved me from myself. I'm not sure who or what I would have become if I didn't have you."
Mulder smiled with a sense of accomplishment at his confession, and Scully mirrored his sentiment.
She kissed him once more before she rested her head between his shoulder and neck, inhaling his scent. The warmth of their bodies, Mulder's steady inhales and exhales and the continued rainstorm outside became a soothing lullaby.
It was a perfect mix of comfort and chaos, and Scully slowly drifted into a deep slumber but not before she heard Mulder whisper into her ear.
I love you.
