The first time this happened was the first time Fushimi Saruhiko slept at Yata Misaki's house. He had been there several times, and he knew how noisy and hectic the house was. It was very different from his home, and as welcoming as Mrs Yata tried to be, he always felt out of place.
Misaki was lying on the bed, playing on the PDA. Saruhiko was sitting on a futon beside the bed, playing on his own PDA.
"Time to sleep". Mrs Yata yelled from downstairs. Noisy footsteps, like a herd of elephants, came up the stairs and seconds later the bedroom door was open. Minoru and Megumi jumped on the bed, making a fuss.
"Go nie", Megumi said as she wrapped her little arms around Misaki's neck and kissed his cheek.
"Good night, Mi-kun", Minoru said shyly, while Misaki placed a kiss on the top of his head.
"If it's over, let's go?" Mrs Yata appeared in the doorway. She entered the room and gave her eldest son a kiss. Misaki turned red and gently pushed her mother away. Minoru went towards his mother, but Megumi remained wrapped around Misaki.
"Megumi" The mother tried to pull the girl away.
"Sau", the girl faced Saruhiko sitting on the futon.
"Do you want to say good night to Saruhiko?" Misaki asked. The girl flinched and shook her head.
"Sau, Mi do."
"Do you want me to say good night to him?" Misaki ventured and the girl nodded.
"Good night, Saruhiko." He turned to his friend, and said, smiling.
"No, Sau, Mi nie ata kixou", the girl snapped irritably. The brother shook his head in disbelief.
"She wants you to say goodnight to Saruhiko-kun properly." Mother explained, the only one in the house who seemed to understand Megumi's language.
"Oh," the realization hit Misaki. Saruhiko stared blankly as he saw Yata lean over and pull him up, placing a kiss on his forehead. "Good night, Saru." Cheeks were flushed and Misaki was doing his best to not look embarrassed.
The girl smiled satisfied and went to her mother. Mrs Yata wished Saruhiko good night before closing the door behind her and taking the children to their own rooms.
"What was this?"
"Oh, habit? My mother always kissed me before bed. And after my siblings were born, she extended the habit to the whole family. Goodnight kisses aren't unusual, are they?"
Saruhiko didn't know, his family wasn't a family model to be followed or compared.
"It's almost a tradition of yours." Fushimi scoffed.
"I dunno, maybe."
"Turn off the light", Fushimi lay down on the futon and wrapped himself in the blanket. The feel of the lips on his head was still there, pulsing so alive and hot he felt like he was going to melt.

The second time Fushimi slept over at Yata's house was a few months later. And the scene was repeated almost exactly as the first time. The mother yelled that it was bedtime and the children invaded the room, jumping on the bed and wishing their brother good night between hugs and kisses.
"Saru too" Megumi ordered, her speech had improved reasonably.
"Megumi, you can't-" Misaki tried to scold his sister.
"It's a tradition in your family, isn't it?" Saruhiko took off his glasses and glared at Misaki.
"You didn't seem too comfortable with it the other time," Misaki scoffed. Saru had frozen, but considering his friend didn't like physical contact, that was to be expected.
"I don't mind."
Misaki stared at him for a moment, as if evaluating the truth of those words. Then he leaned over and placed a kiss on his friend's forehead. Megumi seemed satisfied with the gesture and wished Saru a shy good night before leaving the room, together with Minoru.
Saruhiko figured that as he waited for the kiss, the warm feeling wouldn't come this time. But it appeared even more intense and he had to concentrate as hard as he could not to let it show.
"I thought you didn't care about this stuff, like habits and traditions." Misaki said before turning off the light.
"I don't care, but since I'm at your house I don't mind." he shrugged. The truth is that Misaki was the only one capable of provoking these strange sensations and thoughts in Saruhiko, but he pretended he didn't care.

The third time, it was a very cold day and Saruhiko was sleepy and lying on the futon when the children came into the room. He watched as Megumi hugged Misaki as she kissed his brother's forehead.
"Saru too," the girl grumbled, looking at the boy lying beside the bed.
"I already did," Misaki replied, watching Saruhiko who seemed to have already fallen asleep. He hadn't, but it was a way of getting around his sister's insistence.
"But I didn't see it," the girl protested sullenly.
"Yeah, yeah, but I already did. Now go to sleep." Misaki threw his siblings out of the room as soon as his mother appeared in the doorway, and turned off the light as soon as he returned to bed.
"And my goodnight?" Saruhiko yawned. The voice came out ghostly and Yata gave a startled jump.
"I thought you were sleeping," Misaki rolled over to the edge of the bed, trying to see Saru in the darkness.
"Not yet," but the boy barely had the strength to keep his eyes open.
Suddenly, he felt a weight on the futon and he knew it was Misaki. Was he really going to give a goodnight kiss without Megumi being there to force him? How easy he was to tease.
Misaki's lips pressed against his cheek. And a "Good night, Saru" was whispered in his ear, sweet and gentle. The kiss on his cheek had taken Saruhiko by surprise. He couldn't react until he was sure Misaki had gone back to own bed. Then he opened his eyes and stared at the bedroom ceiling in the darkness. All the warm feeling he had felt the other times was nothing compared to this one. The frigid room felt hot as hell and he threw back the blanket, trying to regulate his body temperature. Damn Misaki.

It was Fushimi and Yata's first night living together. It was a small and cheap place, without any luxury, but it was perfect for the little world they built. It was a tiring day, even if there wasn't much to organize.
Yata was washing the dishes when Fushimi went up to his space, he put on his headphones and started playing with his PDA. But his attention turned to the boy in the kitchen, seeing Misaki cleaning, in a world where it was just the two of them, made Saruhiko feel welcomed, as if he finally had a place where he belonged.
The boy rested his head on the pillow, his body was exhausted. Slowly his eyes closed, and he felt relaxed.
He instinctively opened his eyes and turned around when he felt a presence beside him on the bed. Years of living with Fushimi Niki had taught him to never let his guard down, even if the adult was barely home. The abrupt movement made his lips collide with something and it took a few seconds before he realized it was Misaki's lips.
Yata pulled away as soon as the contact appeared, his flushed face barely visible in the dim light in the room. What time did the lights go out?
"What is it?" The boy pulled the headphones
"Ah… good night." Saruhiko arched his eyebrows in doubt. "I wished you goodnight, but you didn't hear me. So I came over here." Misaki tried to explain.
"A goodnight kiss?" Yata said goodnight was one thing, but clearly he had leaned towards him, which had resulted in the unexpected contact.
"Hm… yeah. Out of habit, I guess." Misaki scratched the back of his neck in embarrassment. "You said you didn't mind."
"At your family's house, or do you expect to give me a goodnight kiss every day from now?" Fushimi hadn't thought about it before, but the idea of Misaki kissing him every day was something he couldn't handle.
"I hadn't thought about that." Misaki replied, it was a habit, so it came naturally to him.
"I figured not." Saruhiko rolled his eyes. "Go to sleep."
"Good night, Saruhiko." Yata said softly before going to his own bed.
"Good night, Misaki." Saruhiko replied, barely audible. It had been an accidental and awkward contact, yet Saruhiko's lips felt on fire. He hated how every little contact with Misaki made him feel euphoric.
After that they hardly wish each other good night. Normally, Saruhiko was working late on the PDA. And after they joined HOMRA, Yata was always busy with the other members, or he got so tired that he fell asleep as soon as his head hit the pillow. A part of Sarukiho regretted not encouraging goodnight kisses.
=8=
The next time it happened, it was at the Yata family home. It was the first time they had slept there in a long time. Misaki's room had been transferred to Minoru. So the two boys slept in the living room.
Fushimi wasn't in the best of moods, he had become unaccustomed to how hectic and noisy the house could be. To help, Yata spent much of his time with his face buried in his PDA, exchanging messages with Kamamoto and other HOMRA members. Even when the two were already lying side by side on the futons. For the first time, the boy wished that Megumi would appear in the room, demanding that Misaki say goodnight to him. He faced his friend, still very entertained with the messages.
He sighed and pulled the blanket up over his head. Since they had joined HOMRA, Saruhiko felt left out and there were days when they barely spoke, even though they lived together. Even if he didn't admit it, he hoped that at least here, in Yata's family house, it could just be the two of them again, in their little world.
"Kamamoto said that Mikoto-san… Saru, are you sleeping?" Misaki's voice was loud and excited. Fushimi didn't answer, he just moved on the futon. "Hey, if you're awake, answer me." he snapped. "Hey, you monkey, I'm talking to you." He yelled even louder to make sure Fushimi was listening.
"Shut up, idiot. Can't you see I'm trying to sleep." Saruhiko lowered the blanket and answered angrily.
"You could say goodnight at least." Misaki complained and Fushimi responded by clicking his tongue, so characteristic, that it made Misaki even angrier.
"If you keep yelling, Misaki, I'm going to kick your ass." Mother yelled from upstairs. The boy flinched, Saruhiko muttered an idiot, before covering his head again.
"Hey. Saru. Hey, don't ignore me." Misaki protested by trying to pull back the blanket, but Saruhiko pulled it back. There were a few seconds in this childish fight, until Yata gave up, at least that's what Saruhiko thought.
Suddenly, he felt a tug at his wrist, taking half of his arm out of the blanket. Before he could protest, Misaki kissed the back of his hand, gently.
"Good night, stupid Saru." Despite the offense, the voice was sweet and soft. Yata still held his hand for a few seconds, before placing it gently on top of the blanket.
Saruhiko's hand felt lonely when the touch ended, as if his fingers desperately wanted to hold Misaki close so he would never let go. And he realized that no matter what Misaki did, how upset and irritated Misaki was able to make him, in the end, the smallest of Yata's gestures always put down his defenses.
=8=
When it happened again it was unimaginable and shouldn't even have happened. It was stormy outside, and even though the room was dark, Fushimi could feel the Yata's glare directed at him. It had been almost a year since Saruhiko had left HOMRA and turned traitor, and he was the last person Misaki would expect to see sleeping next to him in his family's living room.
"When the rain stops, go away." The boy growled in the darkness.
"Do you think I want to stay here?" Fushimi countered.
"Then you can pack your things and leave, you traitor." The word traitor came out full of hate and contempt.
"Is that any way to talk to your sister's savior?" Fushimi questioned, falsely offended. Yata didn't answer. Rain lashed at the windows and lightning lit up the room, making the two of them see each other clearly for a second. There was something on Yata's face that Fushimi couldn't identify, but that made him anxious.
It was by chance, Fushimi was patrolling when he saw a little girl, around six years old, being harassed by an adult. That wasn't his job, he should call the police. But Awashima would take his skin off if she knew he did nothing and left a little girl in danger.
What was his surprise when he learned that the girl with problems was none other than Yata Megumi. She had gotten lost in downtown Shizume, when she decided to buy her mom's birthday gift or something, Fushimi wasn't really paying attention. He didn't want to get involved, because she was Misaki's sister. But precisely because she was Misaki's sister, he couldn't ignore her.
Fushimi decided to escort her home, trying to convince himself that if he didn't, Awashima would make him regret his existence. Missing a few blocks to the girl's house, they came across Misaki, riding a skateboard, very worried about his sister's whereabouts. The mother desperately called her eldest son when she learned that the girl had not returned from school.
And it would have been the simple act of handing the girl over to Misaki without a word and heading back to Scepter 4, if Megumi hadn't grabbed Saruhiko's hand and refused to let him go. And it was just a matter of leaving the girl at home and hearing Mrs. Yata's thanks, saying that he had done nothing more than his duty and leaving after teasing Misaki. But the rain suddenly started, and even though Saruhiko could have called a car, Mrs. Yata didn't allow him to risk it, forcing the two former friends to stay there. Though she didn't seem to know that their friendship had come to an end.
Yata was still staring at him intently, in a way that made Fushimi feel exposed.
"Hey, won't you say goodnight to me?" Fushimi teased, Misaki's gaze took on a grimace of distaste, the look filled with anger that Saruhiko knew so well.
"What the hell-" Misaki started, but Saruhiko continued.
"We're at your family's house anyway." And even in the darkness he could see wide eyes.
"Since when do you care about these things, monkey?"
"But you care, I saw your mom give you a goodnight kiss. How sweet!" Saruhiko teased with a wild laugh.
"Don't you dare talk about my mother, you bastard." Misaki gritted his teeth.
"A man your age is still mama's boy-" Saruhiko didn't finish the provocation, Yata's hands violently pulled him by his shirt and the words were muffled.
Misaki pressed his lips together with as much anger as he could muster. It wasn't a goodnight kiss, but one full of pain and despair, as if with that, Misaki managed to convey all the anguish and frustration he felt.
Fushimi responded to the kiss with the same intensity, his head was spinning and his whole body was numb, he felt his body melting. Misaki's hatred was all he had left, but it was better than everyday indifference. But there, in that moment, he felt that he had much more than hatred, and for a second, Saruhiko wondered if he made the right choice to walk away from his friend.
Fushimi pulled Yata closer, deepening the kiss.
"Saru-kun, I brought more-" Megumi was standing in the doorway of the room, the pillow she was carrying in her hands, an extra one for Saruhiko, was lying on the floor. Eyes wide. It was dark, but the dim light coming from the hallway was enough for her to see the two of them together. "Mother!"
The girl shrieked, running back down the hall and up the stairs.
"Megumi!" Misaki ran after his sister.
Saruhiko stayed there, looking at the futon where seconds ago Yata was. His lips were on fire and he felt something salty, like tears. Weren't they his, so, was Misaki crying?
The rain was pouring outside, but not enough to trap him there. He got up from the futon and grabbed his things.
"It was a goodnight kiss!" He heard Yata yell from the second floor, before heading out the door.
=8=
That time, it had been after they were friends again. Mrs. Yata had insisted on seeing Saruhiko after so long.
It was still exactly as Saruhiko remembered it, a full and noisy house, where everyone was loud and happy. Misaki's mother had struggled to make a nice lunch and the children were vying for Saruhiko's attention. At some point, Minoru started talking about his bug collections, while Megumi showed the songs she liked and it took Fushimi to realize that Misaki was no longer in the room.
It wasn't difficult to find him lying on the veranda, facing the blue sky and enjoying the beautiful weather.
"Finally, they released you?" Misaki asked upon noticing his presence.
"What are you doing lying there?" Fushimi lay down on the ground beside his friend.
"Been lazy after lunch," he said with a slight yawn. "They're happy you're here." He said casually, referring to family.
"Just them?"
"Of course not, idiot. I'm glad you're here too." Misaki smiled sincerely, and Saruhiko wanted to freeze this moment forever. "Time goes by so fast, I still remember Megumi crying because Minoru hid her doll, and now she's already talking about music and idols…"
But Saruhiko wasn't listening. Misaki, pierced by daylight, talking about something so light and casual with a smile on his face, transported him back to the time when they were students. They were other people now, each living in their own world. But at times like that, he could have his little world back where there was only room for Misaki. And no matter what happened, there would always be a place for Misaki in his heart.
"Saru, are you sleeping?" Misaki asked as he saw the other lying next to him, silent, eyes half open.
"Almost," he replied with a yawn. Laziness after lunch seemed contagious, and Saruhiko found himself more tired than he'd realized.
"You are at my family's house, you know." Misaki said before leaning in. Saruhiko only understood the meaning of those words when he felt Misaki's fingers on the back of his neck and their lips meeting. Unlike the last time, it was a soft and gentle kiss, full of care and love. Saruhiko felt Misaki smiling on his lips as he hugged him, returning the kiss. That bastard who always broke down his barriers.
"Mom, Misaki is kissing Saru again!" Megumi screamed shrilly, she was standing at the veranda door, staring at the two.
"That's a goodnight kiss," Misaki yelled back, berating his sister. His hands remained wrapped around Saru, as if he had no intention of letting go.
The girl crossed her arms, indignant. "Good night? It's 3 PM."
