Prologue
Rain pelted against the window pane as I stared down at the empty street below, the roads slicked with the fresh rain.
A small movement in the corner of my eye caught the motion of a small figure running across the empty street and into a neighbor's front yard. Perhaps it was a cat or a small dog doing what was perfectly normal - avoiding the pouring rain the sky unleashed.
As my eyes lingered on the spot the creature disappeared into, my mind drifted to the time. I was certain it was past midnight since we left the pub around ten and from that moment on time ceased to exist. Had I stuck to my normal routine, I would still be in bed lying next to him without the clothes I had worn when I entered this room.
A slight sound originated from the darkness behind me but was not an unfamiliar noise.
I glanced over my shoulder to see him lying there, his well-put hairstyle now a disheveled mess as he lay there in a deep slumber unaware that I was no longer next to him.
It was two months ago when it first happened, an October to be precise. I made sure enough not to turn what took place between us into something serious and I was certain he did the same considering the social standing he managed to salvage after what happened two years ago.
I suppose anyone who cared for their family name would do anything to return to society's good grace - even if that included creating an alliance through marriage.
We both had known what we were getting into when it first happened. That one-night stand turned into many secret sessions between us. I didn't stop once to ponder if I was doing the right thing because it was so much easier to just ride the wave as it happened. Plus, it didn't hurt that he was handsome as hell and knew what he was doing.
I turned away from the window and walked towards my cloak that was strewn upon the chair nearby. After I picked it up to check for my wand, I was surprised to not find it in any of it's pockets. Cursing under my breath, I quickly looked around the dark room. Right, as if I would have any luck finding it in the darkness.
I then remembered he had taken it away from me before I had the chance to cast the spell that we always used to protect ourselves. It was a gamble but it was a risk I was willing to take at the time. I could not step away from such a challenge at that moment. Perhaps had I not been in such a tantalizing situation, I would have reconsidered it.
I walked over to where I had last seen his clothes when I noticed a shine from an unknown light source. It was his wand and right beside it was my own. Taking it, I hurried over to my cloak and placed it within one of the two pockets before I threw it on me. The heavy rain had slowed down but I was certain it was still light enough to potentially get you uncomfortable.
As I opened the door, I glanced over my shoulder and threw one last glance at the occupied bed. It had become a pattern where we would wake up next to each other as if we were a regular couple. No lingering awkwardness between us after a shared night. So to tell him that I wasn't staying in for the remainder of the night would be a strange action on my part. After all, what we were doing was nothing normal so it didn't require the proper niceties.
.x.x.x.x.
The grandfather clock by the entrance into the inn read five-seventeen. In about an hour, give or take, he would notice me missing.
Closing the door after me, I stepped into an empty street. Except for the scattered windows that lit from within, most of the village was still asleep and probably unaware of the light rain that was taking place.
I could have easily Apparated to the entrance of my tiny porch but opted to walk instead. I had a lot on my mind and the walk in the crisp night would be helpful to sort out what's going inside my head.
I couldn't help but ponder what led me down this road in my life. The thing I was doing with him was a selfish act. I was using him as a release but he was no innocent victim, he wasn't a random guy I met at a pub either. No, I knew him - we went to Hogwarts at the same time.
Had I not been living through this myself, I would have certainly found this situation to be rich for gossip. But this was just another event in my life, one that would be added amongst the many.
Note: The following chapters after the prologue will consist about her life up to this point. In simpler terms, it'll be backtracking to her first day and so on.
