The day was dark and overcast, fitting Spencer's mood perfectly. At that moment, he sat in Kelly's going over what Diane had shared with him just two hours ago. News that made his blood boil with outrage. It seems that Esme had an excellent chance of winning custody of his brother. Courts usually rule on the side of the mother and as long as Esme could care for the baby, there was a chance the court would not grant Spencer full custody. Which left his innocent brother as a pawn for that witch to use against his family whenever she wanted and the poor child none the wiser and there was absolutely nothing he could do about it. Well hardly. Diane said that there may be some tricks up their sleeve that could tip the scales in their favor, but nothing was a sure thing.
"You've been here for two hours now, man. Aren't you going to order something?" Cameron frowned, his worry clear in his blue eyes. He had watched his cousin sit and brood and he couldn't help but be concerned.
"I don't know. Would ordering something save my brother from that witch?" Spencer asked, not bothering to look at Cameron, the rage he felt barely contained.
"It might make you feel better. Clear your head to think of some kind of solution. Your thoughts get all muddled when you're hungry, man."
"You sound like grandmother."
"Well, she's right. Come on. At least let me get you a sandwich."
Spencer sighed. He really wasn't hungry, but maybe Cam was right. Maybe getting some energy would help him come up with something to do other than sitting there and brooding over what seemed to be a hopeless situation. "Fine. A sandwich and a coke."
"Coming right up," Cameron smiled, heading for the counter just as Trina came in, looking for Spencer.
"Hey, Trina!" Cameron waved.
"Hey, Cam," Trina waved back before heading straight for the brooding Spencer. She stood over the Cassadine heir, her hands on her hips and her lips downturned in a frown. "Please tell me that you haven't been sitting here all day brooding."
Spencer sighed. "I can't help it. My brother is in the clutches of that psycho bitch and the law is preventing me from rescuing him. I...I'm at a loss for what to do. According to Diane, the courts mainly rule in favor of the mother, and being that I'm just a sibling and not the baby's father, that also lessens my chances of winning. I mean, what the hell? How can a prison be better for a baby than a warm house with everything the baby could possibly need? Why should it matter whether I'm the baby's brother or not? I don't get it!"
"The law can be messed up sometimes," Trina took the seat across from him. "I mean, I'm pissed too. They were so gung ho to lock me up for five years for something Esme did, but now they all seem to want to let her off with a slap on the wrist. What happened to making an example?"
Spencer nodded his agreement. "I know the reason, but I don't think anyone is ready for that conversation."
"That doesn't matter anymore, anyway. I'm not the one in danger anymore. That baby is. We have to do something."
"Don't I know it? But I've thought over everything and everything I come up with, there's a block. I...I don't know what to do, Trina, and that...it scares me. It scares me to think of how she can use my brother for her benefit and that I can't do a damn thing about it."
"Well...that's the thing. Maybe there is something that you can do about it...that we both can do. I've been reading up on some custody cases and...I have an idea. I just don't know what you'll think about it."
Spencer looked at her with a strange light in his eyes. Did Trina come up with something? "What is it?"
"I was reading that in custody cases, the judge looks at certain things like living arrangements, marital status, and income, that sort of thing."
"Yes?"
"Well, you have the means to get a nice home set up, so that's not a problem. You're also rich, so that's not a problem either."
"But I'm not married...which is a problem. Why take the baby from its single mother when his brother is not even engaged."
"Right. What I was thinking is that...we can tip the scales some. We...well...that is if you're up for it...and it'd just be until custody of the baby is secured...we can get married. I mean...it's not like we're nothing more than friends if judging by that kiss we shared the other day…"
Spencer smiled at the memory of that kiss. When he wasn't thinking of his brother, he was thinking of that kiss and wondering when he'll get the chance for another one. Then his eyes widened as Trina's words sunk in. He blinked and stared at her, not knowing how to respond, because to get married to Trina...who was basically the girl of his dreams, the only girl he truly loved... was more than he could even dream of.
"Say something," Trina nervously smiled, trying to read Spencer's reaction.
"I...um...I don't know what to say...I mean...Trina...you have no idea how much you mean to me. I...I can't just marry you and then...let you go like that. I mean...I'm going to be honest with you. If I take those vows...I'm going to mean every single word. I...I can't help it."
"Spencer…I...I know. I'll mean every single word too. But this will be for your brother. So we can give him a safe...relatively normal home. The us part...that comes in second for now."
Spencer nodded. "I understand. It's just...I don't know. We're so young."
"Yeah, but I think we've been through so much, mentally we're a lot older."
"Your parents will want to murder me."
"Your grandmother will be concerned."
"But she'll support me nonetheless. Joss will freak."
"So will Cam."
"We'll have to live together in the same house, twenty-four seven. Do you think you can stand me for that long?"
Trina's hand tightened around his as they stared into each other's eyes, her lips curved into a sweet smile that made Spencer's heart race. "I'm pretty sure that I can."
Spencer's answer came to him a little too quick, a little too willingly. It was an impulse from his most deepest desire and it scared him, which was why he wanted to slow down a little. He did not want to do anything to mess up his progress with Trina. He didn't want to move too fast, even though things have been at a snail's pace since they met. Still, she was just too important to him.
"Let me think it over, ok? I mean...it's not that I don't want to. I...you know that when it comes to you...I just...I need to be smart about all of this. Smart and careful because two of the most important people in my life are going to be affected and I can't mess this up."
Trina simply nodded, getting his reasoning. Ok. Just, let me know because I'm willing."
Spencer looked at her a little strangely, reading something in her eyes. "But why, though? I mean...you're going through a lot right now, Trina. Marrying me is going to add a whole new load of issues. Issues that you shouldn't have to deal with. Why are you willing to take such a step?"
Trina simply shrugged. "Well...I guess that my life is changing in so many ways right now. People I thought that I could trust, turns out that I can't. People that I didn't trust at first, are the ones I trust the most. My life is indeed topsy-turvy right now. But...my feelings for you...they are the one thing that I am sure about. You're the only thing that I am sure about and...maybe starting a new family with the one person I trust in the world right now...it feels like the right thing to do."
"I'm a mess right now, Trina. On all fronts except for where you're concerned. Do you really want to deal with all of that?"
"I wouldn't be here right now if I didn't. And it'll help you get your brother away from Esme. Just think about it, alright?"
Spencer simply nodded. He had to admit, he liked the plan. Binding his life with Trina's...it felt like a cool balm to his tortured soul. But he wanted to make sure that it was something that they both really wanted. "I want you to think it over as well, Trina. I mean, this isn't just my life here. It's yours. It's marriage. It's a whole set of responsibilities that we may or may not be ready for."
"I will. I'll think about it some more, but I really think we should do it. It may be the only way to defeat Esme."
Spencer lifted her hand to his lips and tenderly kissed it. "Trina Cassadine. Do you like the sound of that?"
Trina just shrugged. "Well…Trina Robinson has been in question for the past few days, so yeah. Trina Cassadine does sound rather pleasing."
Spencer had to admit, he liked the sound of it too.
