Hero Academia: Highschool Of The Dead

Hello and welcome to another experimental fanfic of My Hero Academia, in which a new inspiration popped into my head in an unexpected way, which happened in a sudden way, and this new inspiration would be different from the ones I upload recently.

This all started when I was surfing my smartphone which I stored the anime episodes that I downloaded, and there a particular anime series somewhat rekindled my interest, which turns out to be Highschool Of The Dead, and after re-watching the episodes I felt like wanting to make a fanfiction version as it has been six years since the manga was prematurely discontinued due to the death of that series' author due to a heart disease, and that illustrator Shōji Satō and publisher Fujimi Shobo mutually agreed to leave the manga as it is rather than continue it.

The anime version never got a season 2 even though there were some material left, so I thought of making a fanfic version of HOTD, and by then I thought of using My Hero Academia as a base plot and decided to see if this would click to fans.

While the MHA universe would be used, it'll be a slight AU due to certain factors, which you'll soon find out why.

Ch. 1: Chimamire no purorōgu e no jokyoku

Ten years ago…

The scene shifts at an apartment, where a five-year old boy, sporting green, curly hair and having a freckled face, is watching a live footage on his computer, where several pro heroes are seen doing heroic deeds like stopping crime and saving people. The little boy is so fixated that he aspires to become a hero himself when he grows up.

The boy is identified as Izuku Midoriya, and he appeared to be an avid fan of pro hero All-Might. As the little boy is watching in awe and admiration, his mother, Inko, smiled as she felt that her son has found inspiration, and there the little boy told his mom that he wants to become a hero like All-Might, which his mom smiled and said he would one day become one.

"Mom! Look!"

"Yes?"

"All-Might is amazing, right?"

"Yes, izuku."

"Can I become like him?"

"I'm sure you would."

"I'm going to become a hero when I grow up!"

"Yes, Izuku."

However, as fate would make itself apparent, the Midoriya family learned from a doctor that Izuku is Quirkless, and told Inko that they should just give it up, and accept the fact that Izuku is just an ordinary boy and can never become a pro hero, which Inko was in disbelief, asking the doctor how is this possible as she and her husband possess Quirks.

However, the doctor said that Izuku is one of the rare cases where he is born Quirkless and tells her that Izuku should just become an ordinary citizen, attend an ordinary school and live an ordinary life, and tells her that this is how life is, nothing more.

Izuku is heart-broken at this as he feels that his dreams will never be achieved and Inko consoled her son, seeing that he is depressed at this and apologized to her son, though all he could do is cry silently at this as he is forced to face the harsh truth and reality.

"M-mom…"

"Izuku…?"

"C-can…I…still be…a hero…?"

"Izuku…"

"…"

"Oh, Izuku! I'm sorry!"

"…"

"I'm sorry!"

In the years that passed, Midoriya's status as a Quirkless became known to his neighborhood, and neighborhood bullies uses their Quirk to torment him, mentally, and physically, to the point of badly injuring him, and as a battered and bleeding Midoriya lay on the ground, the bullies are ready to inflict more harm on the hapless boy, seeing that he could not fight back due to lacking a Quirk.

"Hah!"

"Look at that!"

"He really is Quirkless!"

"He couldn't even retaliate!"

"You're a loser!"

"You should commit suicide!"

"Yeah, you're a failure!"

"A trash!"

The bullies then began kicking Midoriya so hard that negative emotions began building up, as the bullying continues, and at one point one of the bullies began to kick their target on his BALLS, causing him to s cream out in pain, and the bullies laughed at this and tells him to scream even more, as it is music to their ears.

They kicked him there even more as they taunted him for being a geek who couldn't stand up for himself and for being an otaku whop is nothing special.

"Hah!"

"Take that!"

"And that!"

"You Quirkless brat!"

"Just stay down and die!"

"Stay at home and never come out!"

"You'll just be a punching bag!"

"And we'll be enjoying it!"

This made Izuku's childhood life unmemorable and Inko tried hard to make her son realize that all is not lost and that she is sure that something good is bound to happen and that a bright tomorrow awaits him and he shouldn't give up on life.

Inko's love for her son proved to be the factor that made Izuku hold on and persevere the challenges that came and he fought the misfortunes that tried to pull him down, and so far he is able to move past the fact that he is born Quirkless.

And as the years passed, Izuku persevered yet still suffered from discrimination due to being Quirkless, and while he still watch pro heroes doing their job in savings the day, he still kept on admiring pro heroes, especially the number one hero, All Might, as he is trending on both the live news and in social media, which catches the interest of many people within the Superhuman Society.

Now at 14 years old, Izuku Midoriya was on his last year of middle school while attending at Aldera Middle School, where he has been subjected to ridicule and discrimination due to him being Quirkless, and yet he persevere as he kept moving forward, and there one day he got embroiled in an incident where he gets to meet All Might after the latter temporarily captured the Sludge Villain, but is soon escaped.

While alone at a rooftop All Might was forced to disclose to Midoriya his current physical condition and then told the younger boy the harsh reality which is he can't be a hero due to being Quirkless.

"Sorry, shonen…"

"…"

"But because you're Quirkless, you can't be a hero."

"…"

"That's the reality you'll have to face."

"…"

"I'm sorry."

"…"

After that Midoriya dejectedly left, only to get himself embroiled again with the Sludge Villain who has captured Katsuki Bakugo and uses him as a hostage to keep the police and pro heroes at bay, and in the heat of the moment Midoriya rushes through and attempted to free Bakugo, which in turn spurs All Might, who was initially hesitating, to spring into action and defeated the Sludge Villain.

After that, while meeting him in private, All Might told Midoriya that he is recanting what he told him before, and said that Midoriya can be a hero and that he will train him, much to the younger boy's surprise, and was brought to tears as his dream is about to come true.

Several months passed and All Might subjected Midoriya in some rather difficult training regimen in order to build up his body and stamina as the number one hero intend to pass his Quirk, One For All, to Midoriya, as he decided to choose the younger boy as his successor, and after 10 grueling months, Midoriya's body is in good shape (though his height is still that of a usual middle school boy, which is 5'3).

There All Might took a strand of hair from his head which contains One For All and made Midoriya EAT IT, and the transfer is completed, thus Midoriya now inherited All Might's Quirk, and thus he began his road to becoming a pro hero as he attend the entrance exams of UA Academy, and while he got a ROCKY START, he eventually passed and got enrolled.

In the several months that passed, Midoriya underwent a lot of hardships as he struggled to control and master the Quirk given to him by All Might, and in an ironic twist of fate, he got sorted into a section where his childhood classmate, Bakugo is in the same section as Midoriya, and he is not pleased to see Midoriya here.

Both Midoriya and Bakugo got into a ROCKY path as the latter still doesn't acknowledge Midoriya, despite getting embroiled in several encounters, such as the League Of Villains infiltrating USJ, the Final Exams which they are forced to work together, up to the Forest Training camp where Bakugo got kidnapped by the League Of Villains.

After being rescued, Bakugo is struggling with the fact that he was indirectly responsible for causing All Might to retire as the remaining embers of One For All was used up, and as Bakugo, along with Shoto Todoroki, failed in the Provisional Hero License exams, he is starting to waiver, and discreetly had Midoriya face him at training grounds within UA Academy and faced him with full force.

Eventually the now-retired All Might showed up and explained everything to Bakugo while assuring him that he is not the cause of All Might's retirement, and at the same time told Bakugo what he is lacking in order to become a superb pro hero, and Bakugo reluctantly acknowledge the faults and slowly had to acknowledge Midoriya.

"…and that's how it is…"

"…"

"You should acknowledge Midoriya-shonen in order to improve yourself as well as him…in order to achieve what you need to become pro heroes."

"…"

"That's the only way."

"…"

"And I believe that you already know."

"…"

As the weeks passed both Midoriya and Bakugo began working together as both are amongst the few people who knows the secret of One For All, and are striving to work together to become pro heroes.

Present Time…

The scene then zoomed further and you can see that the scene shows that the place being shown is Tokyo, which is bustling with people who are walking the busy streets, some riding vehicles, and others riding on bicycles. There are several types of people seen on the streets; adults, children, and even infants being carried by their parents. Businessmen, businesswomen, students, policemen, all kinds of persons are seen, and they were doing their usual activities as if they do not mind it.

Shops are open and the merchants are selling their merchandise and are enticing people to buy them in hopes of earning money. It was a typical day and it seems that people today are lively and felt that their lives are full of blessings and couldn't ask for anything more, as some are happy with stable jobs, students studying in the best schools, and more, and some even chatted with one another feeling that today is a good day.

"Hey!"

"Nice day, isn't it?"

"Today is a good day..."

"I love my job..."

"Life is so good..."

"I wish I have a good day..."

"Lots of money..."

"Lots of girls..."

The scene then zoomed further and you can see that it is nighttime, and the scene shows that the place being shown is Tokyo, which is bustling with people who are walking the busy streets, some riding vehicles, and others riding on bicycles. The time now is 19:00, where it is the right time where people from all walks of life in society are seen passing by, having spent the whole day on their numerous activities and are now using this time to wind up and relax.

There are several types of people seen on the streets at this busy night; adults, children, and even infants being carried by their parents. Businessmen, businesswomen, students, policemen, all kinds of persons are seen, and they were doing their usual activities as if they do not mind it.

Shops are still open at this time, and the merchants are selling their merchandise and are enticing people to buy them in hopes of earning money. It was a typical day and it seems that people today are lively and felt that their lives are full of blessings and couldn't ask for anything more, as some are happy with stable jobs, students studying in the best schools, and more, and some even chatted with one another feeling that today is a good day.

"Hey there..."

"Today's a good day..."

"Ah...life is so good..."

"Let's have lunch...?"

"Will you be my girlfriend...?"

"Let's get married..."

"Stop right there!"

"EEEP! COPS!"

The following day, the scene shifts at UA Academy, where classes is currently ongoing, and there it is revealed that while Midoriya is still in the process of mastering his Quirk, he was able to get the hang of it, and it is soon revealed that he is now in his second year, but is sorted into a different section, which Bakugo is also sorted into a different section as well.

During the past few weeks he got close to a UA Academy schoolmate Itsuka Kendo and are on the verge of dating, but unspecified circumstances kept them apart and Kendo ends up dating Bakugo. Despite this Midoriya and Bakugo maintain their rivalry and repaired friendship.

At this time Nezu and All Might are currently at overseas attending a summon from the World Heroes Association, and despite this UA Academy is business as usual, and the next scene shows that Midoriya happened to be standing near the balcony area, where he on his way back to his classroom when he happened to see something going on near the school gate, where for some reason the security gate suddenly malfunctioned, thus unauthorized outsiders could get in.

There a female UA student was there when an outsider, who appeared to be a businessman due to him wearing a business attire, wobbly heading towards the UA student as she noticed that the man was pale, and the scene shows that behind the man, his back had a HUGE BITE MARK, its flesh teared and no blood came out, suggesting that this man had a MASSIVE BLOOD LOSS, and there you can see its intestines and other innards are exposed but since the wounds are on the back, they cannot be seen by anyone in front.

The UA student approach the man as she believes that he needs help, and as soon as she approached the man, the man suddenly grabbed the UA student and bit her hard on her neck, tearing her flesh while chewing out her tissues and muscles, causing her to scream in pain, where another UA student passed by and saw what happened, and he did a flying kick which struck the man on his head, seemingly defeating it and there he went towards the female UA student, who is rapidly deteriorating due to the massive blood loss.

"Hey!"

"…"

"Are you okay?"

"…"

"Hang in there!"

"…"

"Stay with me!"

"…"

Midoriya was horrified at what he is seeing, and there he noticed that the man who bit the female UA student is slowly getting up, and reacting fast, Midoriya aimed his hand at a range as he decided to use his Quirk to disable the intruder by flicking his middle finger. And as he did so, Midoriya blinked his eyes as nothing happened, and when he tried it again, nothing happened, which baffled him as he feels like he is Quirkless once again.

Midoriya wondered what happened as he is still able to use One For All a few days ago, and as he is trying to sort out what is happening, the intruder sneaked behind the male UA student and began biting away on the side of his neck, tearing his flesh while chewing out his tissues and muscles, causing him to scream in pain as blood spilled onto the ground.

"AAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEE!"

"…"

"AAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEE!"

"…"

"AAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEE!"

"…"

"AAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEE!"

"…"

The female UA student, who was bitten on her neck moments ago, had already died, and a minute later she got up and wobbly head towards the campus area, walking like she is directionless and seemingly unaware of what she is doing.

Midoriya became more horrified at what he is seeing, and sensing that something is amiss, he leaves the balcony area and heads back towards the corridors to get help as well as to figure out why his Quirk did not function.

Hope you liked this opening chapter, as it features Midoriya spending his ordinary life at school, though for some reason he has been feeling emotionally detached due to spending most of his life getting physically and emotionally abused by others because he was born Quirkless…

And in an ironic twist of fate, Midoriya met All Might and managed to indirectly impress him that the pro hero changed his mind and began training him before passing One For All to the younger boy. And while it followed the narrative set by the manga, it diverges significantly due to being slightly AU.

But his life is about to change upon what happened at the end of this chapter, and more clues would be shown the next chapter…
