Gumball and Penny froze the moment the two made eye contact.
Penny wasted no time, she ran to the hospital bed, jumped on, and squeezed Gumball, burying her face into his chest and sobbing, loudly. She held onto Gumball for dear life, as if she were agraid to let go.
No, she was afraid to let go. She felt if she let go, she would lose him once more, same with Gumball, they couldn't bear losing one another once immediately hugged Penny back and sobbed silently, caressing her back slowly, comforting her.
Penny finally pulled away after two whole minutes and threw her head up to face Gumball's eyes, the eyes she feared with all her life she would never see again. The eyes that were her only source of comfort in this world.
"Oh Gummy," she started, "I-I was s-so so worried, I s-stayed downstairs because, well, I just wasn't prepared to see you. I-I was s-so worried that y-you wouldn't want to see me, o-or forgive me for what I did I..."
Penny continued to sob and stutter out all about her side of this whole story, how sorry she was and how much she regretted hurting him and how glad she was that he was okay. Gumball, despite knowing probably the whole story, sat back and listened to her.
Oh how he missed her voice.
"G-Gumball, I love you so much. How could you possibly believe that I hurt you genuinely? I wasn't in my mind, I lost control, please, I-"
Gumball cut her off. "I know Penny, it is my fault, all you were trying to do was help, and I hardly was in the mood to hear what you had to say. I am just an ungrateful burden, and I took you for granted. I don't deserve you."
Penny squeezed Gumball once more upon hearing his voice. Oh how she missed his voice.
"Gumball, don't think like that," she pleaded, "you had to have been the greatest thin that happened to me. Without you, I wouldn't have accepted myself, o-or I would have still been in my shell. You taught me to be myself, you helped me realize my self-worth and know I finally love myself. If anything I don't deserve you."
"Oh Pen," said Gumball.
The Wattersons knew by instinct that the two needed to be alone together in this room. So they decide to wait in the hallway. Darwin secretly watched through the small gap in the door.
Gumball and Penny leaned together slowly, Penny still on Gumball's lap. They closed their eyes slowly, wrapping their arms around each other. They kind of rushed this next part. Penny quickly pushed her lips against Gumball's, desperate to feel his taste again.
They held their kiss for two whole minutes, Gumball was caressing Penny's back the whole time. Penny whined when Gumball pulled away to breathe, causing him to giggle. So kissed her cheek, closed his eyes, and put their foreheads together.
They sat like that with their eyes closed, feeling each other's warmth, for about a minute. They eventually parted, meeting each other's eyes. Penny was noticeably tearing again. Suddenly, Penny remembered something.
"Oh, I almost forgot," she exclaimed, "I bought you something, hold on I left it at the door." She immediately left Gumball loose embrace and ran to the door to retrieve the bag she dropped. Gumball just watched her in awe and curiosity.
"Pen, doll, you shouldn't have-"
Penny cut him off, "Nuh-uh, I don't wanna hear it. You've got to accept your gift."
"Pen, I don't"
"Shush shush," Penny shoved a chocolate into his mouth while smiling warmly.
Gumball slowly chewed his chocolate and swallowed it. "Mmmh, this is good! Thanks, doll!"
"D'awww," don't mention it, baby."
The lovers spent the next while going over everything Penny bought Gumball. She bought him a teddy bear, a bouquet of flowers, a heart-shaped box of chocolates ( anything with milk chocolate, his favorite) and just bonding together.
Meanwhile, out at the hallway
Darwin stayed watching over Gumball and Penny. Normally, this would be because he was jealous and he was plotting a way to get Gumball to pay more attention to him, but this time was different. He was watching Gumball out of pride and relaxation. He was glad he had his buddy back, and that he was on the road to recovery.
Darwin deeply regretted following his father's steps and leaving Gumball with the pain of loosing someone so important to him, he felt himself tearing up. Watching Gumball lying on the hospital bed, helpless, with all those bandages representing everywhere he cut himself because he hated himself.
Hated himself, because he thought that he was the one who drove Darwin away from him.
But no it wasn't like that at all. Darwin was just influenced by his father to stay away from Gumball. Tears were now pouring down his face now.
The rest of the Wattersons were almost at the end of the hall and about to enter the elevator when they realized they were missing Darwin. Nicole was about to panic until she looked back at the end of the hall to see Darwin still at the doorway of Gumball's hospital room.
"DARWIN!" Nicole screamed, making Darwin jump, even if he was about a quarter of a mile away from her. Darwin turned around and ran to Nicole, but not before Gumball said, "Bro, were you watching us!?" and Darwin could respond "N-No!"
They made it into the elevator, they were so relaxed. They were so happy that the next time they would return to go home knowing that Gumball was okay, forgave them, and would be back with them soon. They all didn't even bother to contain the smiles on their faces.
Once they were down, they were surprised to see Penny's father, Patrick Fitzgerald, standing there, nervously. Nicole was rather taken aback as she was aware of his disapproval of Gumball. So she couldn't help but ask, "Mr. Fitzgerald! What're you doing here!?"
Patrick didn't know where to start, "Look, Nicole, I've, *sigh* there's been alot on my plae lately, I can't help but feel remorse for my daughter's boyfriend. I know, it seens a little cruel that know that we might lose him, now I care but I just need to talk to him."
"Oh don't worry, he alright!" Nicole assured the distressed peanut, "Despite the harm he's done to his body," Nicole's tone lowered as she said that, "the doctor told us whatever happens he will survive."
Patrick smiled at this. "I'm glad to hear that Nicole," he said, "I was also worried about how my daughter would take it. You see, Penny's been rather down since that breakup. She felt as though she made the wrong choice, and Imma be honest with you, I was quite glad to know they separated.
But seein how much Gumball loved Penny, willing to end his life out of anger for himself for driving her away, was just, well to put it mildy, it was depressing. Penny was furious at me for believing that Gumball was faking his death. so I need to have a talk with them both." Patrick explained.
The family smiled. Nicole said, "Well I'm sure Gumball would be glad to see you. He and Penny are making out upstairs and-"
"WHAT!?"
"Heheh, just kidding, but they are upstairs together, those two desperately need some catching up."
And with that, Patrick bade goodnight to the Wattersons, entered the elevator, and pressed the button to take him to the very floor Gumball was on.
