Author's Note: Now, we're on to Kit. I brought back "Come As You Are" again. I am still trying to work on him. I did add some things about him in the past. Kit barely gets any screen time though. I am going to have to change that really soon. There are still some things that I have to write for him like his relationships and his past life as a human. I'm going to have to figure out where that is going to go. Meanwhile, I know what I am doing for the Halloween special this year. I am trying to figure out who will be next for next week. Maybe we will go back to an angel in the Tower. That sounds like a plan to me. For now, enjoy this week's key.
Key Four: Kit:
He doesn't know why he sings. Not that particular song at least. It's the only thing that he could think of. The memory is in there somewhere, but he doesn't remember from where. It's the only thing keeping him together.
They walk around the city all day and rest at night. They had to keep moving. They are going to leave the City. They started this and they might as well finish this. What choice do they have? Allen started them on this path.
Allen.
They had to leave him behind. It was too dangerous to go back. Kit wanted to get him and Ophelia back. He wasn't alone but the others voted to leave them behind. Grace rubbed him on the shoulder.
"They will find their way," she told him. Kit stared at her. He wanted to believe her. Anything to take away the guilt. Anything to make it go quiet inside. So he sings again.
"Come as you are, as you were/As I want you to be/As a friend, as a friend/As an old enemy/Take your time, hurry up/Choice is yours, don't be late."
They are used to it by now. Some even tune him out. Grace was humming along at one point. It's always this song and he doesn't know why.
He didn't grow up with it. The song just came to him.
"Was it your favorite?" Grace asked.
"No," he said.
"Where did you hear it?"
"I don't know."
He doesn't remember being human. Not all of it anyway. Kit only has faint traces. There was a wife and they used to be happy. He thought about Alma. She too was trapped in the Tower. Will she even remember him? It would destroy him if she didn't. He can't even go back and get her. He wouldn't even know where or how to look. Grace has been there for him.
"What's the matter?" she asked. He shook his head. There is so much that he doesn't know where to begin. It just keeps piling on. When is it going to snap? That rope is starting to come apart. One more weight and it will all fall apart. And then what happens?
"I think I am going to be sick."
Everyone stared at him. Kit froze. Did that come out of his mouth? They stopped moving to stare at him. He felt like sinking into the sand. How could he let that come out of his mouth? Kit lowered his head. Grace squeezed his hand. He could bring himself to look at her. The angel knew how she was looking at him. He wished that she wouldn't do that.
No. Please don't. I can't stand it when you look at me like that.
He wishes that he could tell her. Kit doesn't know why he doesn't speak up. Instead, he started to sing again.
"Come as you are, as you were/As I want you to be/As a friend, as a friend/As an old enemy/Take your time, hurry up/Choice is yours, don't be late."
Suddenly, he stopped. It's so quiet out here. Too quiet. Kit felt himself trembling.
"What's wrong?" Grace asked again. He took a huge gulp.
"Stop asking me that!" he shouted. "No! I am not okay! I'm scared. That's what's wrong!" Tyrone turned and looked at him.
"Well that's good," he said.
"Huh?" Kit asked.
"That means you are still here with us," Tyrone said. He walked up to the confused angel. He smacked him on the shoulder.
"You can still feel something, yes?" he asked.
"Yes…" Kit said.
"Good. This is good," Tyrone said. "Keep that up." He and Harry kept on walking. Grace followed behind. Kit stared for a long moment. That didn't make any sense. The angel hurried to catch up with them.
Kit doesn't know what is going on with his mind. He hated being alone in his mind. They barely talked anymore. Kit wished he could hear their voices again. Maybe talk a little bit longer. Just something. Anything. Even his own singing wasn't doing it anymore.
What happens if and after they escape the city? Where were they going to go? They couldn't get back into Heaven. Would they have to go back into the war? Was the war still going?
"Will we have to fight?" Kit asked. Harry looked over his shoulder. Kit didn't speak at first. How was he going to follow that one up?
"The war," he said. "Will he have to fight it?"
"I doubt it," Grace said.
"How can you be so sure?" Kit asked.
"I don't know," she said. The mechanical angel gave her a strange look. That was a new one.
"You don't know?" he asked.
"I don't," Grace said. Kit about stopped walking.
"Look, quit screwing around!" Tyrone said. "We have to keep moving. I don't want any of us getting caught out here. We've already lost people in this group. We can't afford to lose anymore." Kit wrinkled his nose. What the hell was this? He was the one who wanted to leave Allen and Ophelia behind. Now they had to stay together? Kit wanted to argue but his words died on his tongue. He just walked and kept up with the group. There was only one thing for him to do. Kit took a breath and kept walking. He started to sing again.
"Come as you are, as you were/As I want you to be/As a friend, as a friend/As an old enemy/Take your time, hurry up/Choice is yours, don't be late."
