Many more people gave their condolences, as the rain heavily poured from the cloudy evening sky. And all Uzumaki Naruto could do, was stand there before the image of his now late wife, Hinata Uzumaki, with his young adult son and late teens daughter on either side of him, as he apathetically stared.
' This people really are trying ' he thought, as each person would come and go.
Everyone believed the family was in mourning, though neither Naruto, Boruto or Himawari had since they'd arrived and left shed a single tear. None of them were mourning, they'd already mourned before all this.
" Naruto, this is so terrible. Are you okay? " Sakura asked approaching him. Naruto looked at her briefly, and turns his gaze back to Hinata's portrait.
" He'll be fine. Thank you for coming, Uchiha san, " said Boruto, " yeah, daddy is still just dazed. He'll be fine. " Himawari lied.
Sakura could tell none of them were okay, but accepted their lies none the less. She steps closer to Naruto and upon hugging him, Sakura felt electricity zap through Naruto's body and into her's. Agitatedly she pulls away, stepping three feet from him.
Naruto tilts his head, looking at her, Sakura glances around. " Well Naruto, I have to go. But I hope you cheer up soon. " Sakura said and in a stride leaves the room.
Naruto's ocean eyes followed Sakura, till she vanished from his line of sight, and then slowly he turns his head back in the direction of Hinata's portrait, before hanging his head.
" You held it in real good dad, good going. I almost missed it, hmm, just almost. Please try not to ruin her family, as you ruined yours, will you. It's the only best thing, you can do. " said Boruto in a whisper.
Boruto bows his head to his mother's portrait, then he straightens back up and abdicates the room. Himawari steps closer to her father, and pats him on the back.
" You can understand he's still angry. Just try to stay alive, for me at least. Probably, big brother will come around one day. " Himawari said.
Himawari bows as well and leaves the room, leaving Naruto alone to mourn, whilst indistinct chatters went on beyond the room.
That same day of Hinata's funeral, was also Naruto's birthday, but it mattered not since no one remembered. The funeral took more precedent, and that day was also his last official day as the seventh Hokage of the hidden leaf village.
The next day, Naruto sends a letter to Konohagakure's council, about his resignation and his successor. In the next four days, Naruto had went from Hokage to former Hokage and preparations to carve a new face to the Hokage mountain was already being made.
And then it was announced, on the day of her inauguration. Sarada Uchiha- eight Hokage of Konohagakure. The village could hardly rejoice, since it hadn't been a week since Hinata Hyuga's funeral was held.
Everyone was moderately happy for a new kage, and sorrowful for the seventh's loss. Whilst, Naruto Uzumaki sat on the edge of his bed apathetically gazing at the walls of the bedroom.
Naruto wasn't sure what to do, till three knocks reached him, and like a drone, he got up and went downstairs and approaches the door. He opened the door, and standing before him, was Sakura Uchiha in a pink gown and her hair tied into a ponytail.
" You're all alone? Naruto, you shouldn't be alone in times like this, " she says with concern in her voice.
Sakura walks in, and feeling slightly fazed by the sudden drop in, Naruto stayed and held the door knob for some seconds, till Sakura's voice pulled him out of his head.
" Hey you idiot, are you just going to stand there? " she asked.
Naruto clears his throat and closes the door, he turns towards Sakura. And cautiously asked, " why are you here? " It was a simple, yet almost cryptic a question.
Sakura herself wasn't too sure, she'd convinced herself that she was there to console him. But being faced with his apathetic question, she became uncertain what her stand was in all this.
" Should I leave? " she finally managed to ask. " Do you want to leave? " Naruto asked in return. And Sakura shook her head. " No, " she replied.
" Then you're here to console me. Yes? " Naruto asked, walking in the direction of the kitchen, whilst dressed in white knee length shorts and a white vest that displayed his over the years moderate shinobi acquired athletic build.
" A little bit of solace doesn't hurt anyone, " Sakura said her hands on the couch.
Naruto goes into the kitchen, and makes instant coffee, he comes back out with two cups of coffee. " Oh, I didn't ask. Want one? " He asked.
" A bit rude that you didn't bother to ask, but I'll give you a idiot's pass, because of everything you're dealing with. " Sakura said as he approached her.
Naruto hands over the cup, and Sakura takes it. " I've missed you, " Naruto said looking at her. Sakura was shocked, but she immediately tried to hide it.
" What are you saying... " she trails off, then she takes a sip of the coffee and immediately as it touched her tongue, she spits it back out at Naruto's face.
And it took her that fast to feel bad about what she'd just done. " My goodness, I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to, " she tried apologizing, but Naruto's chuckle prevented her.
" What's so funny, your face is covered with coffee mixed with my saliva, " she said trying to reason. " There must be a napkin around here... " Sakura trails off looking around for a napkin.
" I've missed this, " He said, " what exactly in all this is to be missed. " Sakura replied feeling bothered by his repeat. " You getting mad at me, and also taking care of me. I've missed all that, don't you? " He said.
Sakura ceases her search and takes a few steps back shaking her head. " No I don't. I don't miss it. We were kids then, I was stupid and you were an idiot. But now we're forty, you're the former Hokage, succeeded by my daughter. There's nothing to miss about this silly little mishaps, " Sakura replied almost defensively.
" Oh... " Naruto uttered, then trailed off. " You know what, I think I came at a bad time. Maybe another day. " Sakura said and started for the door.
When Naruto heard Sakura's hand come in contact with the door knob, he spoke up with a slightly raised voice. " If you leave now, you might not find me alive the next time you come knocking, " He said.
Startled, Sakura withdrew from the door and turns to him. " What did you just say, why would you say that. Are you insane? " she asks with a frown.
Naruto turns around, looking at her. " I killed Hinata, " " what? " Sakura uttered befuddled. " Hinata became sick the day, she found out that I was still in love with you, " Naruto confessed.
Sakura shocked beyond words, stood with her back facing the door, whilst her feet were rooted to the tatami floor. " Hinata freaked out, and I tried to convince her that it doesn't matter, because she was my wife and that you believed that it was just a rivalry thing I had between me and Sasuke. I told her, that my feelings to you were nothing, and that our marriage was safe.
" Sadly, Hinata collapsed and since then we've been in and out of hospital since then, " He said. " Are you saying that's why, Hinata wouldn't allow me to treat her? " Sakura asked.
" No. Hinata had decided there wasn't any hope for her, since her disease was in her brain, " " her brain. But the scanner showed it was her heart, "
" Boruto had gone and tampered with the computers, his mom had set him up to it. Despite my protest, but for the past eight months, that she was sick, my words haven't meant much in this house, " Naruto said.
" So, that's why you think you're going to die? Because you believe your hidden affection towards me, is the cause of her death? " Sakura asked feeling annoyed. " No. I'm going to die, because the woman I've loved since ninja academy, is a happily married woman with a beautiful daughter that keeps making her proud. I'm going to die, because I still love that woman. And I can't bare to be in this world, when I know it's going to ruin yours. " Naruto confessed.
Sakura was shocked for a minute, and with some resolve she spoke up and said, " I'm not happy either. Because I discovered I was a moron who married a man that was never there, and gave myself over to my youthful feelings, "
" Yeah. You love him, and he's pretty much the only friend I have that's not just a comrade. I don't blame you for following your heart, I blame me for not being able to stop myself from loving you, " Naruto said.
" Naruto. I've lost my mind, " Sakura said with a bit of sad humour in her voice, " huh? " Naruto uttered.
" For years I've been in love with you, and unhappiness eats away at my soul, every time I saw you with Hinata. And every once in a while that Sasuke makes love to me, I think about what it would be like to have you inside of me instead and then I go into my bathroom and scrub myself till I bleed, "
Hearing her, Naruto became more shocked beyond words than his words ever made her that night.
" You think I'm happy? No, I'm never happy because I felt this relief when Hinata finally passed. Cause then my desire to have an extramarital affair with you grew, to a burning rage that just makes me want to die.
