"Urghhh." I groaned as I came back into the real world, out of my small daze. As my vision started to come back and my eyes could aim in the directions I wanted them too, I examined my surroundings.
I was in a white room. No. It was my room.
"No." I whispered.
This can't be. I can't be back here. I can't be trapped again.
"NOOOOOOO!" I screamed as I punched the wall repeatedly until my hand started to bloody.
"I'd stop that if I was you." A voice behind me said ever so calmly as always.
It was Dr. Callaghan.
I turned around and he was sitting in his chair looking at me with intent, and smiling ever so smugly.
"I understand you're upset. Why don't you take a seat and we can talk about you're... unfortunate behaviour. Hmm." He inquired as he clicked his pen and raised his brown-coloured eyebrow.
I turned away from him and composed myself.
"Okay, calm down Emilia. We'll get out of this, we did before, we can again." I whispered to myself.
As I turned around, Dr. Callaghan was standing above me, and I noticed a sharp pain on my left side. I looked down and my vision lopsided.
He stabbed me.
He stabbed me right in the heart.
"Wha-." I started, but my voice failed me as I collapsed in the doctors arms.
My side started to burn, my vision started to get blurry again, my voice still wouldn't work and my legs just stopped working.
"Shh. Shh. It's all going to be okay. I mean why would we keep such a worthless, troublesome girl such as yourself alive. You're nothing. You're just a drain on our resources and we no longer have any need for you. You're superfluous to us, and you're never going to have that normal life you've always dreamed of." He stated as I felt incredibly woozy.
But wait, I never told him about my dreams, how could he know.
Just before my eyes could fully close, the doctor pulled the knife out of my side, and raised it above me.
"It's time to say good-night, don't you think Emilia." He said whilst still looking smug as anything.
"Noooo." I wheezed as I tried to raise my arms to stop him, but to no avail.
He pulled the knife down and at that second...
I woke up.
I looked around to confirm where I was, definitely on the train that was still moving, sweating like crazy, shaking and gently crying, but still alive.
Definitely alive.
"Phew, that must've been some drug." I announced to myself. I never dream, well almost never. And it's never like that. That felt so real, almost like a real experience in another dimension.
Suddenly the train jolted to a stop, and I heaved onto the rusted door until it opened up just enough for me to peak out of. I looked out and was astounded, what laid before me was a sea of lights and buildings and cars and people. I scanned the nearby area for any Avalanche agents, and when I was satisfied, pushed the door open more and climbed off the train.
"Well, this is where we say goodbye." I said to the train; my first friend that helped me escape my captors. I walked off the lines and found myself on a street with a faulty lamppost, and some really unpleasant smells.
"Jesus Christ." I coughed as I nearly puked. What the hell was that smell. I looked in the general direction the smell was coming from, and saw a man laying down on the side of the road, sleeping on cardboard. What on Earth was he doing? Why sleep outside when there's so many houses and buildings around?
I walked over to the man and was horrified. He was burnt on one side of his face, and looked incredibly dirty.
'Why has no one bothered to help him?' I wondered. Surely someone has seen him, how could they just leave him.
I went to poke him with my foot when someone grabbed my shoulder, and with instinct I immediately elbowed them in the shoulder, making them let me go as I ran a safe distance away and looked back to see a man. He must've been at least 50, he wore a pair of old jeans and a pink shirt underneath a funny looking jumper.
"God. That was impressive little lady, sure as hell beat me up." He said as he started to laugh.
What on earth was funny about the situation.
"What's so funny. I was going to help that man and you come up behind me and scare me. I fail to see what's funny." I huffed as the man edged closer to me.
And that just made him laugh even more.
"Little girl, you're funny. I'll give you that. You also must have a death wish, and if that's the case then have on at it, I just wanted to do my part as an upstanding citizen." He announced as he bowed to me and walked off into the darkness.
Death Wish? Why must I have a death wish?
I decided to not go back over to the man, maybe he's dangerous and that's what that strange man meant. I decided to continue walking further and further into the city until I came across a strange looking structure, that was shaped like a circle.
"What on earth is that?" I questioned to myself.
I walked forward ready to touch it when a voice behind me said,
"That's a doughnut love."
I swiftly turned around to see a middle-aged woman standing behind me holding her purse in one hand and holding a man's in the other. People around here are so different to the soldiers and scientists I grew up around.
"A what?" I asked, never seeing such a strange item before.
The man simply laughed whilst the woman nudged him with her elbow.
"Now Ernie, don't be mean. A doughnut is a treat, that you eat." She explained. "You've really never seen a doughnut before? Strange. Well, you have a goodnight little one, it would probably be best if you got home, it's dangerous at night." She called out as she walked away into a car parked on the other side of the road.
Dangerous?
What kind of danger lurks here. It's been quite a wonderful experience so far, apart from the smell, that was dreadful. I decided to be careful from that moment onwards, no point in being stupid and getting myself killed. I walked away from the 'doughnut' and found myself next to a stretched out structure looming overhead with pathways connecting underneath it. To the right was a light burning with people huddled around it, and to the left was nothing but a dark alleyway that spelled out trouble.
I decided that right was the best choice.
I walked over to the burning light, and found myself met with multiple glares and unfriendly looks, clearly I wasn't welcome here. The men and women huddled around the fire all looked like the sleeping man I found earlier, and since the pink shirted man insinuated he was dangerous, maybe these people were too? However I didn't intend to carry on walking, my legs were killing me and it was beyond freezing.
"Oh great, another stray." One man who was missing an arm muttered to another.
"She don't look 'omeless, she looks rather well fed." Another woman wearing a tattered cardigan commented.
"A runaway perhaps?" Another man spoke up whilst urinating behind them both.
I decided not to comment due to the strangers earlier warning of danger, not wanting to upset any of the people here, so I decided to just stand by the fire and rub my hands together to keep warm, because alongside the smell, the butter coldness was by far the most unappealing part of this place.
"You alright girly?" A man with a remarkable amount of teeth missing asked me.
I nodded in respond and continued with the seemingly impossible and endless task of attempting to keep warm. 'Well at least there's one reasonably nice person here' I thought to myself as the previously urinating man came over to the fire and huddled closely to the others.
"What's ya name then?" The tattered cardigan woman asked.
I swallowed before answering, was it such a good idea to tell these people my name, they might report me to the authorities and then Avalanche would definitely catch wind as to where I was, it probably won't take long before they find out I'm in this city, I need to get out of here as soon as possible, maybe sneak onto another train and head further away North?
"Well!" The woman asked rather impatiently.
Although I guess there's really no harm in just telling these select few people her name, if people assume they're dangerous then people won't bother to come hear them, let alone talk to them.
"My name..." I paused.
"My name is Emilia. Emilia Tennant."
