Red stood in front of the double doors that led directly to Brock's gym. Green stood a short distance behind him. Red clenched his fist as he waited for the doors to open. It had been a full day since the last time he had faced against the Rock Type Gym Leader. The doors swung open and Red walked inside.

"So, you already wish to challenge me again? I can't say I don't admire your tenacity," Brock exclaimed as he faced Red once again. "I do hope our battle proves you have grown! Like before, you may only use two Pokémon for this battle. Are you ready?"

"Go Jeremy, I choose you," Red shouted as he threw down his Butterfree. Jeremy flew into the air and did a somersault to show off his excitement to battle.

"Ah, so you got a Butterfree fromt he Viridian Forest, very good, this will make for a more interesting battle then," Brock sent out his Geodude and prepared for the fight.

Green was sitting in the stands cheering on her best friend. "You can do this Red!" Red took a deep breath and ordered Jeremy to use confusion. The Butterfree began flapping its wings in a strange rhythm as its eyes made a hypnotic pattern. Rings of psychic energy slammed against the rock type which its armor couldn't protect against.

"Geodude, Tackle him now." Brock ordered as Geodude began barreling towards the Butterfly Pokémon. Jeremy dodged out of the way as the Geodude barreled straight into a wall.

"Quick! Hit him again while he's stuck in the wall!" Red commanded as Jeremy began blasting him with another round of psychic waves. Geodude grunted and pushed itself off of the wall, but then fell to the floor and was KO'd. Red chuckled as he saw that now, he managed to actually take down one of a gym leader's Pokémon. Already this challenge was going better than his first challenge. Brock recalled Geodude and gave Red an applause to signal that he was impressed with his progress.

"You did quite well against my Geodude, so now it's time to get serious. Go Onix." His second pokemon absolutely dwarfed everyone around it, and Red could finally see why the ceiling of the room was so high. Red quickly worked to formulate a plan, he wasn't sure if the Confusion trick would work on this one. Even so, he knew Rock types still had a week special ability, so surely continuing with a confusion would work. The psychic waves crashed against the giant beast, but it didn't seem to affect it that much.

"Bide your time Onix, no need to do anything rash," Brock commanded as the Onix gathered energy into itself. Red was confused and ordered another Confusion.

"Red! Wait! He's using bide! Stop hitting him directly!" Green shouted from the audience. Red turned to look at her, but it was too late to take back the command, Jeremy hit Onix with another confusion. The Onix began glowing with energy and it was evident that it wouldn't be long for that energy to get released. He needed a backup plan and fast, but he was sure that whatever his plan would be, Blaze would have to pick up after Jeremy falls. Red had to wrack his brain, what did he know about Butterfree that would allow him to gain an upper hand? He thought back to when he was still in school, when they were learning about the Pokémon of the forest.

"The bug types in the Viridian forest needed to come up with ways to defend themselves against predatory flying types," Professor Oak stated as he pointed to a diagram of a Butterfree and Beedrill. "One example was Beedrill which developed toxic stingers to attack predators with. However, Butterfree went a different route with its toxicity, can anyone tell me what that method is?"

Blue raised his hand confidently "Isn't that a trick question? Butterfree became a flying type like its predators, but it uses those wings to make hypnotic patterns for psychic attacks. Nothing to do with poison."

"An astute observation, but you are incorrect, you are correct that Butterfree's primary source of attack and defense does not involve poison, it still does use poison in its attacks," Professor Oak responded, "Anyone else have an idea?"

Red sat in silence waiting for Green to raise her hand and deliver the right answer like she usually does, but she hadn't raised her hand at all. Had this question stumped her too? He looked down at his desk when he saw a folded up note that definitely wasn't there before. He opened up the note and saw Green's elegant handwriting. He turned to look at her, but she simply looked at the ceiling.

Red raised his hand figuring Green probably hadn't set him up for failure. "Butterfree has toxic scales on its wings as well right? And it can shed scales by flapping its wings hard enough to make a sort of poison powder attack."

"Jeremy! Hit him with a Poison Powder," Red called out as his Pokemon began flapping its wings even harder than before right above the Onix's face. A cloud of poisonous cells formed and blasted straight into the beast.

"Release the bide!" Brock shouted as Onix roared. A shockwave of energy originating at its core blasted Jeremy against a wall. Jeremy fell to the floor unconscious and Red had to recall him.

"Alright Blaze, you ready for your redemption round?" Red asked as he sent out the Charmander. Blaze looked at the Onix with determination, this was his moment. "Don't attack him this time. Just Growl at him." Blaze began growling angrily at the stone creature.

"Tackle him!" Brock ordered as the lumbering snake lunged it's massive body towards the lizard. The Charmander managed to dodge it and growled once again. Onix was starting to get sluggish thanks to the effects of the poison, and Red saw a great opportunity.

"Hit him with an Ember as hard as you can, he won't take another hit," Red pumped a fist as Blaze's flames envelloped the snake and knocked it out. "Yeah! We won." Red smiled as Brock clapped a little bit.

"Excellent work, I see you managed to strategize against Bide using Butterfree's Poison Powder and not attacking until he was weak enough to get taken out with one hit." Brock said approaching with a Boulder Badge. "I should warn you though, if you had any badges at all, I would have been allowed to use Pokémon that had Rock type attacks against you. I'd recommend getting a Pokémon that is stronger against whatever gym you challenge next." Red nodded understandingly as Brock pulled a CD out of his bag. "In addition to your Boulder Badge, I would like to present you with this Technical Machine." The CD was labeled "TM 34: Bide". "Bide is a move that allows a Pokémon to store damage received and release it back to your opponent with more force. Of course, you already saw some of its weaknesses during your battle with me."

"Thank you, I'll take a look at it later." Red smiled as he recalled Blaze. He placed the badge in a little case and walked over to Green who gave him a hi five.

"Great work on the win Red!" She beamed at him.

"I couldn't have done it without you." He smiled back and walked with her to the Pokécenter.

"What do you mean? All I shouted was not to attack him during the Bide." She said.

"Yeah, but it was also you passing me that note that reminded me that Butterfree can learn Poison Powder." He blushed as he realized that that was a really awkward detail to focus on.

"You remembered a note I passed you?" She asked with a bit of a giggle.

"Can you blame me for thinking about the Pokédex expert when looking for Pokémon advice?" Red asked pulling his hat over his face. Green giggled a bit more as she opened the door to stop him from bumping into it due to his now obstructed vision.

"I suppose not, I am planning on expanding the current research in the Pokédex as well though based on my own observations." She excitedly held up a yellow notebook she had with the words "Pokédex Expansions" written on the cover.

"Woah, how much do you have written so far?" Red asked as he checked his Pokémon in with the Nurse.

"Let me show you!" She said staring at him with an eager smile. She then opened the book which had pages numbered from 1 to 136 and a number of blank pages following them. "So I have a theory that Bulbasaur's Bulb is actually used for storing nutrients in adition to being its source of of Grass type attacks. Charmander's tail makes a slight crackling sound that can only be heard in quiet. While not poisonous like Butterfree's scales, Caterpie's feeler produces a stinky substance when provoked. A hard Impact can launch a Caterpie out of its shell. Pikachu uses its tail to monitor its surroundings!" Green's infodumping was not uncommon, but Red got worried when he saw her face turning blue.

"Alright Green, breathe before you continue," he gave her shoulder's a light squeeze causing her to realize what she was doing.

"Sorry, you know how excited I get sometimes," she blushed.

"It's okay, I still wanna hear what you found, but please, breathe and let me respond?"

"Yeah, okay," Green nodded and took another deep breath. The two talked about her paper Pokédex for a bit before walking off to their rooms.
