A/N: Edward is 10 years older than Bella. I was waiting for a banner for this story, but I'm excited about this story. I hope you enjoy it. Inspired by the 1985 Anne of Green Gables movies. Modernized with old-fashioned values.
When Isabella Swan woke in the morning, she had a feeling that her life was going to change. She hoped it wasn't anything bad because the last time she had felt like this, her father and mother died in a freak storm. As she showered and dressed, she thought about her life up to now.
Bella lived a fairly quiet life on the land that has been in her family for generations. Emmett and Alice, her brother and sister didn't want anything to do with the land before or after their father died, and Bella wasn't going to sell it like they had wanted. Charlie, their father had known that Bella loved her home and would never part with it, so he made sure the land and farm came to her upon his death and made sure no one could take it from her. Her siblings married into money with the Whitlock and Hale families, so her parent's life insurance policies came to her and left her a lot of money, and she used it to repair and build upon the land. There was more than enough left, but Bella didn't need it, so it's been sitting in the bank for well over five years and she's been adding to it.
Bella may have been born of this generation, but she was very much a young woman with values that have been lost in time. Now, she knew that women had jobs, drove, and everything in between, but Bella wanted to be a stay-at-home mother and wife so she could take care of her husband and children. She had a job and worked from home, but it didn't pay much and that was fine with her. She made more than enough selling canned vegetables and fruits, along with handmade quilts and clothing at the street market in town.
Bella loved her life, she knew there was something missing. Love. She wanted to find a good man to love, marry, and have children with, and she wouldn't settle for anything less. She wasn't promiscuous. Bella was very much a lady. Emmett and Alice along with Rosalie and Jasper have been trying to set her up with someone, and she refuses. Dating around wasn't for her, and she sure wasn't going to be with someone who would sell her land when they discovered the value of it. It's been around since the 1800s. It's priceless. It held too many fond memories, and she wanted to live and die on this land like she always swore she would.
As she walked out the door, Bella couldn't help but gaze at her creation. To the far left of her house, there was a portion of her fields that were Bella's pride and joy, the orchard and fruit and vegetable garden, herb and spice bushes, and she also took care of her flower beds. The vegetable beds had rows of potatoes (including sweet potatoes), every kind of bean and pepper, tomatoes (she didn't care of anyone said, tomatoes are vegetables, and no one can tell her different), onions, corn, zucchini, broccoli, squash, peas, lettuce, carrots, cauliflower, radishes, cucumbers, cabbage, eggplant, spinach, celery, and asparagus.
The fruit vines had rows of grapes, raspberries, strawberries, watermelons, and blackberries along with bushes of cantaloupe and elderberries. The orchard had rows of fruit and nut trees that lined the left side of the garden. Apple, orange, banana, plum, pomegranate, cherry, pear, avocado, peach, lemon, and blueberry, walnut, pecan, cashew, hazelnut, almond, and black walnut.
Then there was also a portion of the garden for Bella's herbs and spices. She had angelica, basil, bay leaf, cayenne and chili pepper, cinnamon, curry leaf, dill seed, fish mint, ginger, garlic, jasmine, jalapeno, juniper berry, lavender, lemongrass, mint, mustard seed (black, brown, white, and yellow), paprika, parsley, pepper (white, black, and green), peppermint, poppy seed, rosemary, thyme, and vanilla. Pretty much the only thing Bella didn't grow herself was the camellia sinensis plant (to make tea because she couldn't harvest the tea leaves for three years), and coffee beans.
However, later in the year, she plants the pumpkins that sweeten her friend's and family's stomachs and teeth with her made-from-scratch desserts. The gardens and orchards were her own personal slice of heaven. Bella always took care of her gardens during the mornings before it got too hot. Weeds were a hassle along with insects. The flower garden had every flower imaginable, and in the middle was a gazebo with an irrigation system that ran through the gardens and orchards. Bella had designed it similar to a stream that came on automatically throughout the day as it would be a lot less work to water them herself so she could have time to take care of the animals.
Before getting to the rest of her chores, Bella was knocked to the ground by one of her Great Pyrenees, Lucy, as the other one, Jake ran up to greet her. She was used to this kind of greeting, so she wasn't startled or upset. She and her father recused them a few years ago when the previous owner left them on the side of the road. It enrages Bella at the thought of another living thing being mistreated.
Hours later, a truck pulled up, and Jake and Lucy stood in front of her protectfully, as a man stepped out. From looking at his uniform, Bella knew he was a Sergeant in the Army. He was a very handsome man. He had to be six-foot-one, maybe six-foot-two, with beautiful bronze hair, a strong jaw, and the most stunning green eyes she had ever seen.
But she didn't understand why he was at her home.
"Evening, ma'am," he greeted standing five feet away from her, not even getting nervous that he had two large dogs staring him down.
"Good evening, Sergeant. What can I do for you today?" she asked after she calmed her dogs down.
"My name is Edward Mason. I just got into town and I saw your ad about renting your guest house. I'm on leave for a few months, and I was hoping it was still available," he answered trying to to ogle the beauty that stood before him. She was five-foot-four-inches, had curves in all the right places, the most mesmerizing chocolate brown eyes with hints of hazel, and stunning mahogany waist-length hair with a slight curl toward the ends. She was the most beautiful woman he had ever laid eyes on.
"It's still available. But it seems you misunderstood. You may stay in the house in exchange for help on the farm. One of the guys just moved away for college, so I'm looking to replace him. Do you think you can help out?" she asked. She never charged rent as long as they helped in some way. It was the way she was raised.
"Absolutely. I was born and raised on a farm, so I have no problem helping out," he said trying not to get lost in her deep brown eyes.
"Well, the house is yours then. It's not much I'm afraid. One bed, half bath, with an open concept kitchen and living room. It's furnished," she said telling him where to go.
"That's perfect. It's better than what I had a week ago," he said smirking causing her breath to catch as she gazed at his crooked grin.
"I'm going to start dinner, and the boys usually come up, but they went into town an hour ago, and won't be back until morning. You're welcome to join me if you'd like," she invited as she opened the gate into her front yard.
"Thank you, Ma'am. I will be happy to join you. Give me half an hour to wash up," he said smiling at the brown-eyed angel.
"Take your time, Sergeant Mason. Dinner won't be done for a couple of hours. You may call me Bella," she said closing the gate behind her and leaving the dogs in the field. They didn't like being enclosed, and they chased off the wildlife from her livestock.
"Thank you, Bella. You can call me Edward," he said causing her to smile as she closed the screen door listening to his truck as he went down to his house for the time being.
