Dance Under the Stars

Erwin was nervous. He checked his hair in the mirror that hung on the wall beside his desk, smoothing it into place. Then he paced the room. He checked himself in the mirror again, then huffed and stood up straight, fixing the collar of his stiff, white dress shirt. It was ironed and starched since it was meant to stay in place, but it felt like it was meant to choke him. Despite the same style and colour, the shirt was different from his casual outfit since today was anything but casual.

The door to his room opened and his best friend entered. Mike's usual bangs were parted down the middle, exposing his steel grey eyes. "Nervous?" He asked Erwin, adjusting the royal blue cosmos flower in his lapel. It was the same shade as his suit blazer and pants, the same shade of blue as Erwin's suit.

Erwin nodded, staying silent. His tongue felt like lead. "Mmh," he hummed, "You could say that."

"Going beyond the walls to fight titans, no problem. Going beyond the walls today-" Mike teased Erwin, his voice a deep rumble.

"This is different." Erwin replied with a sigh, adjusting his cuffs.

"This isn't life or death." Mike continued to tease him.

"No," Erwin agreed, then smiled knowingly at Mike. "This is much more important."

Mike chuckled lowly and came to stand in front of Erwin. He placed his hands on Erwin's shoulders, gazing into his seablue eyes. "It's going to be great. C'mon, let's get going."

Erwin nodded, letting Mike clap him on the back and lead him from the room. Since they had defeated the titans, his old military office had become more of a storage room and study than a place for meetings and battle strategizing. He gave it one last look, knowing that when he returned he would be a different man. A better man. He would have left behind every part of himself that was the monster he had to be to save humanity. He would finally return to being just another man within the Walls of Paradise.

Mike led him down the hall, down the stairs, and towards the waiting carriage outside. Ness opened the carriage door for them, nodding his respect to Erwin.

"Commander," He greeted him, "Congratulations."

Erwin smiled and nodded in return, murmuring a "thanks" to the man that had handled all the horses for the Survey Corps for years. He was glad that Ness was one of the ones to have survived the long wars - after his dedicated service, he deserved it. Erwin was sure that the man would never leave the stables, being a devoted lover of horses, but he was sure that this would be the last time he asked Ness to prepare any horses for the Survey Corps.

Erwin climbed into the familiar oak carriage and settled into its dark leather seats. Mike climbed in as well and sat adjacent to him so that they could both stretch out their legs. They both felt the carriage shift as Ness got into the driver's seat outside and snapped the reigns. The carriage began to move at a slow, steady pace, and Erwin sighed softly, watching the familiar scene outside the window pass by him: training grounds and supplies houses slowly turning into shops and residences and eventually the tall arching walls.

"Where are you gonna go after this?" Mike asked, his voice a low tone, as if he were afraid to break the silence. "Somewhere not too far away, I hope."

Erwin laughed once, smiling. "Oh, not too far away. Just out past the fields and to the sea. To the beach. Somewhere away from these walls."

"When will you be back?"

"I don't know." Erwin replied, "Soon." He turned his gaze towards Mike, smiling at his long time friend. "I will see you again."

"Maybe we can all go live in one of those large stone houses by the shore?" Mike teased him, smiling now that he had been reassured he wasn't losing his friend. "Fix up those remains and make them see some warmth again."

"That sounds nice." Erwin chuckled, "Really nice."

"I'd like that." Mike replied, "I could enjoy that for my last days."

Erwin laughed, then reached out and touched Mike's knee. "Your last days are a long way off. All our last days are now."

Mike grinned, "I know. We did it."

Erwin shared in Mike's happiness, thinking back to the first night the Survey Corps had realized what they had done, really realized it. The wings of freedom had truly brought freedom to humanity. All of their friends that had passed had not been in vain. They had stayed awake telling stories and drinking, hugging and singing, until late into the morning hours. Erwin had been passed from group to group, thanked and hugged, congratulated and praised. He had his hand shaken so many times that night he was afraid it would fall off.

And then there was Levi.

His lieutenant had somehow managed to stay out of the limelight, despite being the real hero of humanity. He had kept to himself, drinking beer after beer on his own, standing in the dimly lit corner of the room with Hanji by his side. He watched Erwin with his silver gaze, smiling at him from across the room.

"What's your order, commander?" He had asked him when Erwin approached him, his words stopping Erwin in his tracks. They were the same words Levi had started every day with since Erwin had recruited him to the Survey Corps all those years ago.

"Stand down," Erwin breathed, a smile on his lips. "Rest, lieutenant. You of all people earned it."

"As have you," Levi had replied, giving Erwin a hooded look. Erwin recognizes it as the one Levi had always given him after they survived a mission beyond the walls, the one that silently beckoned Erwin to join him in bed.

He reached out and took Erwin's hand, leaving the commander speechless. They had always been this way; Levi had always given the commands in their relationship since he knew Erwin had been commanding the army all day.

"Come," Levi stated, gently tugging his hand. "Bed."

Hanji chuckled softly, congratulated Erwin once more and then wished them both a good night. Erwin could tell that she wanted to share another drink with them, but she knew there was no point arguing with them when Levi had that look in his steel eyes.

"It's too bad Nile can't be here to see this," Mike broke into Erwin's thoughts, returning him to the present moment.

"He's aware," Erwin replied, a tone of disapproval in his voice. "I doubt he'll make the effort."

"He never does." Mike agreed.

A silence enveloped the carriage again. Erwin had returned to watching the scenery change outside, while Mike fused with his bangs. When Mike glanced out the window, his bass-toned chuckle broke the silence.

"Forest of the giant trees?" He asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Fitting, isn't it?" Erwin replied.

"Lots of battles fought here, Erwin." Mike reminded him.

"He loves this place though," Erwin replied, his voice soft as he continued to gaze out the window. "The trees, the fresh air, the filtered sunlight."

"He's right though," Mike once again agreed, his reply a tangent to their original conversation. "The air is cleaner out here. I just... never paid attention to it before."

"Do you think you'd ever forget the smell?" Erwin asked, leaning towards Mike, a knowing smile on his face. "Of Titans? Of battle?"

Mike chuckled, tapping his knee with the palm of his hand several times. "I never considered that," he admitted. "I suppose, I hope I do." He nodded, then licked his lower lip. "I really hope I live to the point where... I won't recall it. It'll all be a... bad dream that happened a long, long time ago."

Erwin chuckled. "I'd like that too."

The carriage slowed and Erwin felt the butterflies in his stomach. He turned to Mike, reaching out to stop him from shifting in his seat as the carriage rolled to a stop.

Mike glanced down at Erwin's hand, then settled back into his seat. He waited patiently, knowing that Erwin had something important to say.

"Mike," Erwin began, his eyes full of emotion. He paused, trying to control the waver in his voice. "I just want to say, thank you. For being here. For being by my side. For being my best friend."

Mike only smiled, his moustache lifting in the corners. He nodded, then placed a hand over Erwin's. "You're welcome, Erwin. Always."

Ness got down from the driver's seat outside and had come around to open the door. Mike climbed out first, then stood to the side for Erwin to climb out. The commander stood at the end of a long aisle in the middle of a clearing. At the end of the aisle was a tall arch made of twisted green vines, clusters of hanging white spring bells, and more royal blue cosmos flowers. To either side of the aisle was four rows of three chairs, already occupied by Erwin's closest friends. Mikasa, Jean, and Connie were seated towards the back, with Nanaba, Pixis, and Zackly seated towards the front. Two empty seats on the very front were reserved, as was two at the back.

Standing under the arch, wearing a garland of white roses around her slender neck, was Queen Historia. Her rose pink dress was covered by a black robe and her hands wore silk, white gloves. She beamed at Erwin from under the arch, then motioned for those in the seats to either side of the aisle to stand.

Mike headed down the aisle, leading the way for Erwin. Ness guided the carriage away as Erwin began to follow Mike, walking down the aisle with his head held high. He came to stand in front of Queen Historia, sinking to one knee to bow to her. Those in their seats resumed them, watching the scene before them in awe.

Historia blushed and took Erwin's hand in both her own, gently urging his to his feet. "Commander, you bow to no one. For it was your guidance that saved us from the Titans."

Erwin blushed, then nodded his thanks. He turned them, looking back down the aisle he had just walked. Mike stood to his side, just behind him, supporting his best friend.

A second carriage pulled up, this time with both Ness and his wife, Olivia, steering it. Ness got off the carriage and tied the horses to a nearby tree, before he took one of the empty seats at the back, leaving his wife to open the door.

This carriage was different from Erwin's, crowned in the same vines, spring bells, and blue cosmos as the arch above Erwin. The horses wore golden bells and royal blue caparisons.

Erwin held his breath, suddenly feeling the butterflies in his stomach all flying around, frantically beating their wings. He was nervous, nervous because he had never wanted anything as much as he had wanted this moment. Seeing outside the walls, finding out what was in Grisha's basement, the end of the titans... all of it was what he lived for. But this... with all of his goals completed, he realized just how much he wanted this. He was afraid, nervous, excited, and euphoric all at once. He pushed his golden hair back once more, hoping it stayed in place as he held his breath, unable to take his eyes away from the carriage.

Olivia opened the carriage door, then stepped away. There was a moment before Hanji stepped out, her brunette hair tied in a half-updo, so that waves of it fell past her shoulders and framed her face in a style she hadn't wore when enlisted in the military. She wore a simple, blue gown that hung to her ankles, and in her remaining eight fingers, she held a basket full of flower petals.

Keith stood up then, lifting a violin to his neck. He began to run the bow along the strings, starting a beautiful, uplifting melody.

Hanji walked down the aisle, reaching into the basket and tossing blue flower petals ahead of herself. She smiled at Erwin, truly happy to be able to be part of his big day.

When Hanji reached the end of the aisle, Keith stopped playing his song. Hanji stood to Erwin's left, standing opposite Mike, and turned to face the carriage.

Erwin breathed deeply, realizing he had been holding his breath, and glanced to Mike to share his nervousness. Mike gave him a smile and a nod, then Erwin returned his gaze to the carriage.

From inside the dimly-lit space, Levi stepped out. Dressed in a suit of Himalayan white with an elegant blue cravat around his neck, Levi stood tall and proud outside the carriage. He held a bouquet of white roses, spring bells, and blue cosmos, and his dark features were covered with a long, white tulle veil.

Erwin exhaled loudly, his heart beating heavily in his chest. He watched in a cacophony of emotions as Levi began to walk down the aisle towards him, his white dress shoes taking firm, evenly paced steps to cross the long distance between them.

Erwin was lost in the moment as his groom approached him, having yearned to marry the small, dangerous man from the Underground City since the first time he had laid eyes on him. All their fights, all the battles they had led, all the arguments and sleepless nights and anxiety at the thought of losing each other, hiding behind quarter doors to steal kisses and holding hands under tables to keep their priority of saving humanity above their own emotions and desires, had finally proved to be worth it all.

Erwin was amazed that he was finally here, finally able to settle down and pursue his life with Levi. He was grateful for the time they had spent together in the Survey Corps, but he was excited to start over with him, to be able to focus on their own lives and only their own lives. He recalled the night he first slept with Levi, caressing his dark hair in the darkness of their shared bedroom as he gazed at the smaller man catching his breath. He hadn't expected Levi to submit to him that night, that first beloved night, and he was still riding off the high of his orgasm as Levi's silver eyes opened and he gave Erwin a rare smile.

"What do you want to do once you retire, commander?" Levi had asked, his voice husky and full of warmth.

Erwin know it was a rare moment for Levi to let his guard down and have his emotions exposed. He smiled at Levi, humming as he thought for a moment before responding in an equal husky tone. "I'd like to get married," he began, "Get away from the walls, the stench. Find a place further away, but not too far, somewhere where the land meets the ocean and the mountains and the forest. Spend the rest of my days with my groom, drinking tea and eating our harvest, fishing, dancing with him under the stars."

Levi chuckled, amused by Erwin's oddly romantic words. "He'd be a lucky man." He whispered.

"He's a deserving man," Erwin replied, "He's had enough hardships."

Levi was quiet, his exhale stuttered. Erwin could tell Levi wasn't sure how to process what he was hearing, his emotions threatening to be overwhelmed.

"Will you marry me, Levi?" Erwin had then asked, breathing heavily.

Levi smiled then, raising a hand to hold Erwin's, keeping the blonde's hand against his cheek. "When we save humanity and can move to where we dance under the stars. I will marry you, Erwin."

Erwin felt his heart leap with joy. He took Levi's hand and brought it to his lips, kissing the back of it before kissing Levi's lips.

They never shared their engagement with anyone, not even Mike or Hanji. They wore no rings or symbols, putting their jobs before their dreams. But they never forgot the home they would have between the beach and mountains and forest, or the dance they would share under the stars.

Erwin kept the memory his most-guarded secret, using it to inspire and motivate him, to keep Levi close. They only ever spoke of it again years later, when Levi had led Erwin to bed after their celebration.

They made love with the windows open and the moonlight illuminating them, no longer caring who could hear their passion or see their bodies through the drawn curtains of their bedroom window. They were alive with a rekindled fire of passion and opportunity, of true freedom, and together they soared with new wings towards their united future.

Once tangled in their bedsheets and each other's arms, they lay catching their breath in delight, still in disbelief that they were finally free from the threat of the titans.

Erwin broke their silence with his intense gaze, his eyes alight with determination. "Levi," he breathed, letting go of their military titles and acknowledging him by his name. "Will you marry me?" He asked once again.

Levi turned to Erwin in the silver light of the moon and smiled, the same warm smile he gave Erwin so many years ago. "I will." He replied, his voice full of sincerity and warmth. "I will take you to where we can dance under the stars."

Erwin smiled, "You remembered?" He breathed.

Levi smiled. His voice was a gentle whisper as he spoke. "We're finally going to get away from the walls, the stench of this rotten city. Find a place further away," he chuckled softly, "but not too far. Somewhere where the land meets the ocean and the mountains, and the forest. Where we will spend the rest of our days together, drinking tea and eating our harvest, fishing, and dancing under the stars."

"You remembered," Erwin repeated with a gasp, awed that Levi had held onto the dialogue, not only in thought but word for word. He threw his arms around Levi and passionate kissed him, turning over so that he could press his lover into the worn mattress of their double bed.

Erwin's eyes blazed with passion as he recalled the joy of their own celebration, of their freedom to escape and be wed. He watched Levi with excitement and hunger as his anxiety fell away with every step forward Levi took. He reached out and took Levi's hand, bringing him to his side as Levi finally cleared the aisle.

Levi put his bouquet in Hanji's basket, a symbol to dismiss her and Mike from their sides. They took the remaining seats in the front of the audience, smiling up at their friends who stood hand-in-hand before Queen Historia.

"Dearly beloved," Historia began, "We are gathered here today to witness the union of two souls who are to be joined in the sanctity of marriage. Through the darkest times humanity has faced, these two souls had bravely battled and fought for not only their freedom, but the freedom of all people of Paradise. On this day, they are to be unified as one, both consenting to sharing their lives together. They have prepared their own vows, which I will ask of them to take turns and recite now. Erwin, I ask you first. Please make your vow to your groom."

Erwin felt his nerves return suddenly, aware that he was declaring his love for Levi in public for the first time. He reached out and took the corners of Levi's veil, then lifted it over his head and let it hang behind him, revealing his face. Then he held his hands again, trying to remember the words he wrote down on a parchment that was folded up in his breast pocket. He didn't want to have to resort to pulling it out; his commitment to Levi wasn't a script on paper, but a vow of the utmost heartfelt sincerity.

Erwin took a moment to clear his throat; he felt parched. He squeezed Levi's hand and began, first saying Levi's name in a whisper, then repeating himself at a volume loud enough for their friends to hear.

"Levi, from the moment I set eyes on you, I knew I wanted to stand before you one day as your groom."

Erwin exhaled heavily, gazing into Levi's silver eyes with an intense hunger. His own blue eyes were full of adoration and he breathed heavily as he continued. "I- I-"

Erwin looked away, down towards their clasped hands. Levi's eyes were full of adoration and joy, two emotions Erwin wasn't sure he should even be looked upon with. True, he had helped save humanity from the titans, but he had sacrificed so many, had costs so many innocent their lives. Soldiers younger than him and Levi, kids like Eren.

"Levi, I-" he tried again, "Fuck."

"Erwin?" Mike asked, his voice low from where he sat. He made to move towards Erwin, but Hanji held him back.

"Don't." She whispered.

Levi squeezed Erwin's hands.

"Yes, Erwin?" He asked, his voice a soft whisper. He restrained himself from releasing Erwin's hand to caress his face, wanting to keep from becoming too intimate before their vows were exchanged.

Erwin smiled at Levi, trying again. He decided to forgo the parchment and the rehearsals and tell Levi what was truly in his heart, what was the most important thing to share.

"Levi, I... have never met anyone quite like you. Someone so strong, so steadfast. So committed to your friends, your family, and your squad. You embody the very essence of humanity. Every emotion, every action, every glance. You made me see the flaws in myself, the monster I became in my pursuit of the- the titans." Erwin stammered, then looked down. "And I- I want to I want to become a better person because of you. A better man."

Levi blushed at Erwin's words, smiling at him in encouragement.

"I want to wake up every day next to you. I want to go to sleep every night beside you. And I want to spend every day for the rest of my life giving you the life you deserve. Whether sick or healthy, I will be there. Whether rich or poor, I will be there. Hungry or fed, cold or warm, for better or worse, Levi, I will be there.

"I've waited years to say the words. Levi, I surrender my heart to you, to have and to hold, to love and to cherish. In all my entirety, heart, body, and soul, I am yours forever and always."

A short chuckled of happiness burst past Levi's lips and he squeezed Erwin's hands, wanting to hug him to silently show Erwin his affection.

Erwin held him steady, not letting Levi release him. He couldn't. Not yet. He smiled at Levi and chuckled as well, overwhelmed by the happiness Levi radiated. After so long watching Levi suppress his emotions, it was breathtaking to see him finally let down his walls and break his carefully composed cold mask to share how he felt with Erwin so publicly. Erwin knew Levi had been afraid to show his emotions, to invest them into someone he could so lose so suddenly, and so it brought him great joy to just see Levi smile, to see him laugh openly as he held his hands.

"Levi," Historia turned to Levi. "I now invite you to recite your vow."

Levi looks to Historia, then back to Erwin and sighed. He opened his mouth to speak, then closed it once he realized he forgot his opening line. He tried to speak again, but no words came out. Erwin's speech had dazzled him and his happiness overwhelmed him.

Levi gave his head a shake, cleared his throat, and took a deep breath.

"Erwin," he breathed his name, squeezing his hands, this time seeking reassurance from Erwin.

The blonde squeezed Levi's hands gently in return, smiling in encouragement at Levi.

Levi smiled in return, unable to keep from reacting to Erwin's gorgeous smile.

"Erwin, I just want to spend forever by your side." He sighed, clearly beginning to improvise his vows. "From the day that you first took me beyond the Walls, I knew that I was eternally tied to you. That I would follow you wherever you went. Support you, guide you, care for you when you wouldn't. You've always been a man to me, Erwin. A strong, compassionate man full of... everything that a human should be: determination, benevolence, selflessness, and kindness."

Levi's silver eyes shimmered with tears and he swallowed audibly. "I know sometimes you don't see yourself as any of that, but I do. And I always will. I've seen your kindness in how you mourn for your troops, how you take the time to meet every one of them, and even when you gave your time and resources to those that were on the street with nothing. You make things better, Erwin. I know because... you made me better. I was that person on the street. I was that person with nothing and no one to care for. No one to remind me to be human."

Levi sniffed, pausing to exhale softly. "I can't imagine my life without you, Erwin. As my commander, as my friend, but most of all, as my lover. I want to wake up every day next to you and go to sleep every night beside you. I want to spend every day for the rest of my life by your side, in your arms. Whether sick or healthy, rich or poor, hungry or fed, cold or warm, and for better or worse, Erwin, I will always be there. I surrender my heart to you, to have and to hold, to love and to cherish. In all my entirety, heart, body, and soul, I am yours forever and always."

Erwin's sea blue eyes shimmered with tears of joy. He felt as if he were only anchored to the earth by Levi's calloused hands, bound to him and nothing else. He squeezed Levi's hands once again, then silently mouthed "I love you" to him.

Levi blushed and whispered "I love you" in return.

Historia chuckled softly, amused by the two older men's affection towards each other.

"At this time, I ask that both of you exchange your rings. Erwin," Historia motioned to him. "I invite you to exchange your ring first."

Erwin nodded and released Levi's hands so that he could produce the ring from his suit jacket pocket. He had slipped just the ring inside, a simple gold band with a sapphire nestled between two diamonds.

He took Levi's left hand in his own, then gazed into his eyes. "With this ring, I promise to be yours in all entirety." He announced, before slipping it on Levi's third finger, carefully rubbing the place where Levi's missing index and middle fingers had healed.

Levi smiled at the ring, admiring it against his pale flesh. He bit his lower lip, fighting back the waves of emotions as he turned his attention to Historia.

She smile at Levi, then nodded once, her crown catching the filtered sunlight from the canopy of the trees above them. "Levi, I now invite you to exchange your ring."

With trembling fingers, Levi reached into his pants pocket and produced the ring he had ordered for Erwin. A thick gold band with a diamond nestled between two sapphires. He chuckled softly, amused by their individual choice of stones, having never spoken about the rings that they were designing for each other.

Erwin chuckled as well, amused that their rings - though crafted in secret - had been made to look like a purposely designed pair.

"With this ring," Levi began, holding it firmly between his thumb and middle finger. "I promise to be yours," he sighed, gazing into Erwin's eyes. "In all entirety." He concluded, lowering his gaze and slipping the ring on Erwin's third finger of his left hand.

With the rings exchanged, Historia raised both her hands so that she highlighted the couple before her and beamed at the audience. "I now pronounce you Mr. And Mr., Erwin and Levi Smith. You may now kiss the groom."

As if he couldn't wait another second, Erwin released Levi's hands to cup the back of his head and support his lower back, before he dipped him over his knee and kissed him. Levi gasped into Erwin's mouth, then moaned in happiness and closed his eyes, kissing Erwin in return. His slender right hand came up to caress Erwin's cheek and his left held Erwin's shoulder.

The audience burst into applause behind them, congratulating them on their marriage.

As Erwin guided Levi out of the dip, Keith started to play another song on the violin. Zackly and Pixis joined him, adding a cello and a tambourin to the tune. Mike directed the guests to rise and move the chairs towards the perimeter of the clearing, creating a space for Levi and Erwin to have their first dance.

Despite their height difference, Erwin wrapped his hands around Levi's shoulders and Levi wrapped his arms around Erwin's waist. They swayed together, slowly at first, as they adjusted their rhythm to the time of the violin. Then Erwin spun Levi under their arms and guided him into a more energized dance, swaying and circling the clearing with him as their friends watched.

As the song came to a close, Erwin dipped Levi over his knee once more and kissed him to their friends' applause. Then Levi took Mike to dance, and Erwin took Hanji, and afterwards all their friends joined them, circling and spinning and dancing in the clearing, to the tune of the violin and cello and tambourin, under the canopy of the giant trees.

They danced together until the forest began to darken, turning the soft filtered sunlight to a silver glow. Ness gathered all the guests' attention to the arch again, where Erwin and Levi stood. Beside them was a large, two-tier wedding cake decorated with more blue cosmos flowers.

Erwin and Levi held a knife in their hands, sharing a look of admiration with each other before they plunged the blade through the cake's smooth white surface. They cut every guest and then themselves a piece, handing them out on plates until only theirs' remained.

Historia held up a hand, signalling for everyone to withhold from eating their slice of cake. The audience waited, watching Erwin and Levi feed each other a bite of the chocolate cake first, before cheering.

A bite was all Erwin and Levi had to eat, before they walked down the aisle together towards the horse-drawn carriage. As their guests began to eat their cake, Erwin opened their carriage door, then helped his groom climb inside.

"Thank you," Erwin began, his attention to his guests, his closest friends. His eyes shimmered with tears once more and his voice wavered with emotion, "Thank you for the wonderful evening, the sacrifices you made, and being here for us, for being our friends. On behalf of Levi and myself, thank you. We hope to see all of you once again when we return from our honeymoon."

Ness came to Erwin's side then, motioning for the blonde to climb into the carriage, before he closed the door behind him. The carriage shifted as Ness climbed onto the driver's seat, then began to roll as he gathered the reigns in his hands and snapped them to guide the horse to trot.

As they left their friends behind, Levi cuddled against his husband's side, leaning against him. Erwin placed an arm around him, then kissed his temple.

"We did it," he breathed, "We saved humanity, Levi."

Levi smiled, then pulled away from Erwin just enough to gaze into his eyes. "We did." He agreed, smiling once more. "And now, my love, we're able to spend the rest of our days dancing under the stars."
