Chapter 9 - No Longer Waiting

'Alright, let's see. Which door am I feeling for…' Subaru was thinking to himself as he walked down the hall.

He had just finished talking with Emilia, as she was telling him about how worried she was and glad that they got him back. She wanted to stay longer but she was running late in her studies, so unfortunately she had to leave him.

It worked out for him though, as he needed to go meet the lovely Beako and ask for a favor. Which is why he was trying to feel out which door his gut was telling him to pick.

"Beako! I need to ask for your help!" He exclaimed as he opened the door, revealing a beautiful blonde spirit sitting in the middle of the room reading a book.

"As much as it irritates Betty that you're able to just walk in here as easily as you do. I had also wished to speak to you, in fact." Beatrice closed the book she was reading and placed it on her lap as she looked up at him. Not speaking as if she wanted to know what he wanted help with first before she starts asking her question.

"You wanted to speak to me?" Subaru wasn't expecting that, in his previous loops he couldn't recall Beatrice ever needing to talk to him, as he was always the one going to her to talk or for help.

However no words left the spirits mouth as she just pondered to herself, leaving Subaru in an uncomfortable silence. Not sure if he should stand up from his position or not, he decided to be safe and keep his current pose.

"Does the name Echidna have any meaning to you?" She asked as she kept her gaze upon him.

Subaru's body gave a slight twitch on the mention of that name, he wasn't really expecting her to ask that. Also he has no idea how to answer that question. Standing up from his current position, he was nervously scratching his cheek trying to answer her.

"Ummm, if you're asking if I heard it before. Than I'd probably have to say-"

"Don't play coy with me, I know that you seem to have some connection to her. I'm just unsure how you do, and I wish to know, in fact." Beatrice stated, not in an accusing tone or anything but said it like she was saying it was an indisputable fact that couldn't be wrong. She could see by the look on his face that he was wondering how she came to that conclusion.

"If you want to know why Betty knows, it's because of the jewel you have around your neck. I'm able to sense Mother, even if it's only faintly. Betty would never mistake Mother's presence." She explained as she raised her hand and pointed to him.

Subaru was a bit too stunned to speak, he had a plan to keep him making contact with the witches a secret. Since they knew about his RBD, explaining to someone why he was in contact with them or what they even talked about may not be possible. Unless he wants to feel a shadowing hand crushing his heart again.

That being the case, just what was the correct thing to say right now? Is there anything he can make up that Beatrice would actually believe?

Subaru takes a deep breath, and exhales. Thinking it's best to just say as much of the truth that he can, and hopefully she'll let him off with that.

"Echidna is dead, but I do have a contract with her." He said as he looked at Beatrice, with her eyes widened from what he just said.

"We have an agreement to… let's say 'help' each other out. It was her who recommended me to go to you so I could learn to control magic and not destroy my gate. With the hopes of fixing my, well. 'Women' problems." He explained, hoping that she wouldn't think that he was lying.

Beatrice's lips were quivering, her breathing speeding up as she was processing what he was saying. As if there was no doubt that the words he was saying were the truth. She reaches her hand to the pendant.

'A contract with Mother? But he just said that she was dead! Yet, he has a contract with her…' So many things were racing through the Great Spirit's mind. However, right now she had just one thing she had wished to request.

"Is it… Is it possible for Betty to talk to her." She said in a soft spoken voice.

Subaru could see a hopeful and desperate look on her face, almost like this was something she was seeking for all her life. But Subaru knew the answer he was about to say wasn't going to be the one she wanted to hear.

"I-I don't know. Whenever we met, it wasn't something I ever initiated. Most of the time I didn't even know I was going to talk to her, and just kind of just realized what was happening. But you're welcome to try." Subaru said, wondering if Echidna would answer Beatrice. He had planned to remove the necklace and give it to her, but before he could Beatrice had gotten up from her seat and quickly walked up to Subaru. Gulping, he does his best to tell her what's been happening since he arrived. Having to twist some of the story for his convenience. Beatrice glanced over to Subaru, staring at him intensely. Some parts of what he didn't all add up, she knew he was holding back some information from her. However she decided to not say anything, seeing there must be a reason for him not to tell her despite him needing her help. That and the fact that he was the only one that could make contact with Echidna.

"So you need to learn how to control your gate." She raised her hand and placed her palm on Subaru's chest.

"This is strange, Betty doesn't know how this could be possible. It's as if you had just acquired a gate, it resembles that of an infant's, in fact." She said as she looked at him, waiting for an answer.

"It's going to take some time for you to control your gate, the way it looks I assume you never used magic before." She looks at him again waiting for confirmation.

"No, I don't know how to even try to use it."

"That was probably for the best, I suppose. If you had drained your mana and kept overusing your gate without proper care… there could be a chance of you destroying your gate beyond repair. Going forward, only use magic when you have Betty's permission."

"Roger that Beako-sensei!" He said, knowing full well that she wasn't lying.

"Are you going to start teaching me now?" Subaru wanted to start right away if possible, the sooner he could fix this problem the better. Especially if she said it was going to be a while before he could properly control it.

"No, you should let your body rest. Betty also wouldn't want the others to question why I'm teaching you magic when you just came back. In fact, I believe the maids are looking for you. Best be on your way now, I suppose. I'll come for you when I decide when we'll start our lessons." Beatrice walked back to her seat as she began to read her book again.

"Oh, okay…" Subaru was a bit dejected hearing that, but at least she agreed to help out, and that's something he was happy about.

"Well alright, till next time Beako-sensei!" He said before leaving the girl alone in the Forbidden Library.

Leaving her to her own thoughts.

Three Days Later

Things have been pretty good for Subaru, or as well as things could be. After that talk with Beatrice, he went to look for the twins. Despite what Beatrice told him, he didn't feel the need to rest. He felt perfectly fine. However, just like Beatrice. Ram and Rem had told him to rest, that he wouldn't be working for the next few days.

So I'm still here, the story is not abandoned. I'm not going to get into why I've been for so long in too much detail but things in the beginning of the year were not great. Like really not great.

Long story short my dad is a heavy drinker which caused him to get hospitalized for lung failure. He was there for 2 weeks but he was discharged but with a huge warning of no more drinking. (His favorite anime atm is Vinland Saga) And honestly it was amazing, and because of that I started to get back games and anime as a result. I caught up with the WebNovels and made me really want to get back into writing. Sooooo here I am.
