Claire Redfield, in the middle of a weekday morning, finds herself looking at herself at the built-in closet mirror in the bedroom of her newfound apartment. She had found the place online 5 days ago, while scrolling through a website that offers small vacant apartments, it was a 2 bedroom apartment, and the next morning she drove to the place to look at the condition of it personally before deciding to give it a go and move in, that was 3 days ago and Chris had used his extra day off to help her get her stuff to the new place and drop off the boxes inside, the apartment is in the 3rd floor, much lower than her old one that was on the 10th but decent enough to last her a couple of years to make a fresh start, and it is all she can afford for now, because she's saving up as much money as she can now that she wasn't allowed to work at Terrasave anymore. When she had told her supervisors that she was pregnant, they had informed her to sign a resignation paper and gave her her last paycheck due to the policy that doesn't allow pregnant women to work at the establishment, let alone let them near the entrance because of the harsh chemicals contained within.
This broke Claire's heart, she had put all of her life's effort into her position at the NGO for years, she had loved the job so much, the feeling of being able to help the people in need while at the same time be near her friends was a satisfaction she lived everyday, her escape from the viruses despite being somehow connected to the victims, and all had gone to waste just because of her accidental pregnancy. Her brother had stepped in to provide for her though until she's able to find a temporary online job that could somehow bring up her income, and told her to just think about her plans for the baby. And because of all the things that had been happening so far in her life- she is now leaning more towards...abortion, it's an early and tough call since she hasn't even gone to the OB/GYN for an ultrasound yet, but she thinks that it is really for the best, for her life to go back to what it was, although she felt horrible about herself for deciding such a thing, after all, she was getting rid of an innocent life who had nothing to do with her mistake.
Staring at the mirror, she stood straightly facing it, she is wearing a fitted white tank top, gray sweatpants and a pair of pink socks, with her usual elegantly tied ponytail replaced with a single clamp holding her hair in a messy bun, if Claire had to describe herself right now, it would be the word "mess", she thought she looked so stressed and was starting to develop bags under her eyes, from the nights that she couldn't sleep from overthinking her life and from the stress of the ever changing hormones had brought upon her. She still has to organize a handful of boxes that contain her valuables but she doesn't have the energy to do so, so she took a quick break.
Her eyes scanned her head, down and suddenly, her eyes fell on her abdomen, she got curious on how big it had grown for the past 3 and a half months, so she tilted her body to look at her side profile and there she saw a bump in her middle section. She realized that she had never even stopped to look at the evidence of the growing life inside of her, sure she sees it everyday at the corner of her eye and felt the change every now and then, but to observe and focus on it is something entirely different. She slowly lifts her tank top up to get a better view of her belly without any clothing, and if she had to compare the size of her baby bump to an object, it would be as big as an avocado, it was oddly bigger for the average size of 14 weeks and very noticeable if she wore tight or fitted clothes, she wonders why she hadn't noticed it before, but the size isn't what Claire has set her mind on, but the fact that this was the result of what she and Leon did, this is their baby, another human being they created together.
A further curiosity had her absentmindedly stroke her belly with her palms and it in some way felt for the first time- right for Claire, she sighed of relief, like a wave of overprotectiveness came over her, that nothing could ever hurt her baby, she will do anything, and a big weight was lifted off her shoulders, as she instantly just forgets about all of her problems. But she frowns remembering her intentions, made her stop and get her hands off the bump, she didn't want to get attached, knowing that in one instant, it will eventually be gone from her life, she pulls her tank top back down and continues to rummage through her unorganized belongings, she had already contacted a doctor who will do the act (abortion) yesterday and he told her to give him a call again before she goes there, she wanted to do it as soon as possible, while she still doesn't feel the fetus moving, she didn't want the baby to feel it getting removed, even the word baby and removed in the same sentence felt cruel to her, and now that she has seen her belly's size, unlike what she had in mind earlier, she contemplates on whether abortion is really the right option.
She had considered putting them up for foster care or adoption instead if her first option was ever too much for her to handle, but having background knowledge on how the system functions from her previous field works, first of all, she had seen multiple children and they were not in the best condition that everytime she remembers it wounds her...to see such innocent kids be put in a very stressful situation, but then again, not all children in foster/adoption are miserable. Second is that the process would be too long for her, first she has to continue on with the pregnancy, sign a lot of paperwork that she probably would have already seen the baby too often and love them for her to give them away, considering that she's already aware of the life they have despite being only 14 weeks along, and when she does give the baby up, there's no doubt that she'll worry on whether the people in the system would actually care for them or whether her child will ever get adopted by a suitable family that won't beat him/her up, or if they will be safe from the monsters in this world or...die eventually due to it.
It pained Claire to think of such horrible things, especially the possibilities of her child's fate in foster and possible adoption, and there she was reminded of Sherry whose parents died and had to live with the reality. Speaking of the girl, she hasn't seen her ever since Racoon City, she had left as soon as she had made sure that she was secured with Leon to find her brother. But when she got back, he had told her that she was eventually taken away from him to be put in custody, but she tried her best to track Sherry and she did, found out that experiments were performed on her and had been on her side throughout, but once it was all done, she had no contact with her anymore. Years later she found out that that little girl became an agent and is more than proud. With this, Claire somehow realized the duality of her personality from when she was 19, that brave college student who stood up for a little girl whose parents had simply ignored her for some science experiments, compared to her 42 year old self now that is given the chance to have her own children that she wants to get rid of. It is truly a fact that we are not the person we were yesterday, she thought to herself.
However, mentioning Leon...as the biological father, he needs to know, just like what her brother told her, and it is very understandable, but she also thought of what Rebecca advised her, that this is her body and it is her full right to decide on what to do with it. She is so torn on how to deal with the situation right now and she desperately needs at least someone who has gone through the same experience to influence her. Knowing no one personally, there's only one place she can think of and it was on social media, she stopped once again from going through the box, placed the item she was currently holding on the carpet floor and went to grab her laptop that was placed on a desk that was probably left by the previous tenant, she opened her laptop, pressed the power button on the far right of the keyboard, typed her password and her desktop showed up soon after, opening up the browser and adding up a tab to login to her one social media account which she thought would be suitable for her post since her profile in the website looked anonymous as she had never used it before, and none of her friends know that it was her. tapping the plus icon that is meant to open up a post tab, once it popped up, she placed her hands on top of the keyboard and started moving her fingers to type.
Good day to anyone who has reached this post and will take the time to read the following below,
Hello, I am a 42 year old female, currently 14 weeks along my first pregnancy, recently unemployed due to the fact that I got accidentally pregnant by my friend from a one night stand. We are not on good terms, and we haven't seen each other since the morning after the baby was conceived. Like I mentioned before, I was forced to sign a resignation paper due to a policy of the organization that women who are pregnant cannot continue on with their employment because of the dangerous workplace. I'm at a position where my heart wants to keep the baby but at the same time, I'm at an age where I can't ideally raise one due to my situation. I'm reaching out to fellow women who have gone through a similar experience, please help me out by simply sharing your experience down below, thank you very much.
Sincerely yours,
quacklrbear
After hitting enter, she quickly closed her laptop shut, she will login to her account again in 3 days, just to give time for more people to share, and by then maybe she can finally settle on a final decision, since her ultrasound appointment is in 2 days, she really hopes for the best out of this, for everyone now, not just for herself anymore.
