It's Logan's 60th birthday and the whole family is gathered around the study. The surprise party was organised by Sally Anne. Roman knows his father hates surprises, but he's managed to grin and bear it so far.

Even Uncle Ewan is there, with Cousin Marianne, who is chatting animatedly to Connor. Little Greg is playing in the corner, his gangly form already almost as tall as Roman and Kendall.

They finish playing I Went to Market, in which Logan proves he can out-memory everyone there, and then Sally Anne brings out the photo albums.

"I asked Ewan for these," she says as she sets the albums down on the coffee table. "I thought you kids would like to see your dad as a little boy." She's still trying to buddy up to the three of them after destroying their parents' marriage.

"So sweet of you," says Shiv sweetly. Roman edges closer to his sister, allied against a common foe.

"Perhaps Logan would rather look at the albums privately," says Ewan, looking at his brother.

"Oh no, we wanna see," says Roman. Kendall nods, sensing an opportunity to get Sally Anne in trouble.

The albums are falling apart at the seams, the black and white photos of two young boys bearing little resemblance to the men in front of them.

"Wow, Dad, you really lived in poverty," says Connor, looking at the tiny house in the photos.

"It wasn't that bad," says Ewan. "We didn't have private jets though…"

"Hey, I was five years old when Dad started his business," Connor points out. "I wasn't born with a silver spoon like these three."

"Yeah, you're a real man of the people," says Roman.

The last photo in the album is of Ewan and Logan with a baby in a crib placed between them.

"Who's the baby?" asks Shiv.

"That's Rose," says Roman, suddenly remembering his conversation with his father a while back.

"Who's Rose?" Kendall looks a little perturbed that Roman knows something he doesn't.

"Nobody," says Logan. "Just a baby that my aunt and uncle were looking after."

"But I thought—" Roman begins.

The whack around the ear comes as a shock to Roman. Usually he can see his father's outbursts coming. He stares at him in shock from where he's sprawled on the floor. Greg bursts into tears in the corner.

"Shut the fuck up," says Logan. "Don't talk about things you don't understand."

There's a silence broken only by Greg's wails, until Marianne goes to comfort him. Sally Anne gathers up the albums as Connor discreetly helps Roman to his feet.

"How about a game of baseball?" suggests Sally Anne, a note of desperation in her voice.

The incident is seemingly forgotten for the rest of the day, until it's Ewan's turn to leave. Marianne and Greg are outside, saying goodbye to Connor. Kendall, Roman and Shiv huddle near the top of the stairs as Ewan turns to his brother at the door.

"I don't want to see you lay a hand on one of your kids again," he says.

"Then I'd suggest keeping your visits to a minimum."

"It's not funny."

"It was a clip round the ear. We used to get a lot worse."

"Oh yeah, Uncle Noah. That guy who's been dead for over forty years? He's not responsible for what you do today."

"Don't tell me how to raise my kids. You brought up an airhead who married a queer."

Ewan shakes his head. "You know, what happened to Rose wasn't your fault, but so much is."

"Go fuck yourself, big brother."

"I'd say happy birthday, Logan, but I know nothing will ever make you happy," is Ewan's goodbye shot.

When the door closes the three teenagers scramble away from the stairs before their father can see them eavesdropping. It's not the best birthday party they can remember, but on the plus side Sally Anne is gone shortly after.
