This is a story that primarily follows Natsu Dragneel and Lucy Heartfilia past the conclusion of the Tartaros arc. Written for nalu4emily & dragonballwish - Dragon Rage can also be found over on AO3/Archive of Our Own!

I apologize to you all for the delays and the long amounts of waiting. Been trying my best to update Dragon Rage, but for a little bit my mind was entirely occupied on school and life. I also have been focusing on adding more intensity into these chapters to give them a purpose, as well as more enjoyment for you all to read. Each chapter is important to the entire story in its own special little way.

NOTE: I did go back and rework all 13 chapters of Dragon Rage! This is the second time I've done this, but this one I feel definitely has improved the story overall unlike the first that just tweaked a couple parts. The gains in viewership, favorites, and interactions reflect that and so I'm proud of the revisions and hopefully you've all enjoyed them too.
-Minor/major edits were made as well as grammar fixes. If you don't want to go back and re-read though (which I entirely understand), I recommend at least re-reading chapters 4, 7 & 10. Remembrance, Change, and Party Crashers for those who prefer chapter titles instead of numbers.

MoonrainerTheNightRain - Glad that epic chapter made up for the cliffhanger! My music preference leans more towards classic rock, older country, and that 2009-2014 pop dynasty since that's mainly what I grew up with. In regards to your question about whether or not I like Jazz, I've never been into it but I also haven't ever been against it. It's interesting to say the least. Jazz is unique.

Mitskisfan - Thank you for your kind words. Always makes me feel good inside knowing my readers are satisfied with the story I am producing. It makes it fun as a writer when you can test the limits and even go beyond them sometimes - just to see what works and what doesn't. Glad you are enjoying it!

CrazySly - Thanks, Crazy! Yep, E.N.D has a little thing for Lucy. Though in a cruel twist of fate it's at the same time that Natsu has now found himself involved more with his favorite blonde mage. The status of their "relationship" shall be explored more in this chapter. I'm happy to see you liked the increased importance behind E.N.D's existence and more specifically, his Book. I feel like it adds more meaning towards Lucy's goals of protecting the Book of E.N.D should she ever obtain it. Ironically, that goal of hers clashes against Igneel's final task of destroying the tome prior to his death vs Acnologia.

Fairy Tail-Fan - Hi FTF! I'm a little confused at the question you're asking, but I'll give a go at it and see if I get close. Dragon Rage starts where the final few episodes of the 2014 Fairy Tail season conclude. From there, the first major spin in the canon universe happens where Lucy is present with Natsu while he grieves over the loss of the Fire Dragon King. After that we have another major change, the actual disbandment of Fairy Tail with Makarov announcing it all the members (Natsu is present for this).

Skipping a few chapters later, we see a similar pattern of Lucy's 1-year time skip that correlates to Natsu's return during the x792 Grand Magic Games. At this point, it follows canon once more with Natsu setting fire to several buildings and announcing the comeback of their prestigious guild, Fairy Tail. The next chapter is nearly identical to the anime where they go and recruit Wendy back to FT and stop Orochi's Fin. Then the whole Avatar arc is pretty similar besides some notable changes where Natsu and Lucy grow closer and E.N.D's arrival makes itself known. Now we've arrived at the Alvarez arc. Hopefully that wasn't too long of an explanation, haha. TLDR; Yes this story follows most of canon but it has several twists throughout and the original "ending" to FT that we were given will be entirely different as well, as well as key points of the Alvarez War.

Kayesfaye - Appreciate it, thank you for your support! I'm going to be honest Kayes... I don't really have an "upload schedule." I normally try and post between Friday-Sunday around 7pm eastern time though. Today obviously is an exception since I didn't manage to get this one out in time last night. I was trying to get an update out about two weeks at a time (like how this story's first five chapters went) but college and reality have really sunk its teeth into me and I'm just trying to keep myself focused right now and not burn myself out. This is a nice reliever to do every once in a while when my creativity is soaring. I also like to make sure every chapter is written well and flows smoothly before they get published. Hopefully that explains the spaced out uploads!

Summary: Word is now out on the whereabouts of Princess Hisui and Master Makarov's location! When Fiore needs the fire dragon slayer's talents the most though a rift forms in what once was known as loyalty. It doesn't help that the King of the Fire Dragons finds himself occupied with entirely different matters prior to their departure for Alvarez or that a serious implication has emerged… Ishgar's strongest wizard suddenly has betrayed them!

Chapter 14: A Choice

The built-up tension within the room immediately dissipated following the fracture in Mavis Vermillion's crystal. Shards of the mineral were scattered about along the floor and the pale blonde, who had been frozen in time, now laid before them unconscious. Natsu sensed a faint heartbeat.

That's remarkable. E.N.D's thoughts burst through his mind as the demon was taken back by the turn of events. After all that time in a crystal... she's still alive.

Natsu vaguely registered his other half's response, deciding to put his dispute with Lucy aside for now as they both appeared at the side of Fairy Tail's founder. His demonic characteristics once more vanished, setting his mind on concealing them so as not spook her should she awaken.

"First Master?" Lucy called out in an attempt to wake the unresponsive girl. "Can you hear me?"

Your friend is still in a dream-like state.

How do we wake her?

I'm not entirely sure for this is new to me. Considering though that it was your anger that shattered her protection... perhaps the compassion that you have for your guild is the answer.

Worth a shot, I guess.

"I'm gonna try something, Luce."

"What are you planning to do?" She questioned.

"I have an idea. Just trust me alright?" He looked at with her a determined expression, one that portrayed that he fully believed in himself.

"Okay." Lucy nodded and took a few steps back. Seeing his hand rest over the girl's heart she smiled before whispering, "I've always trusted you, Natsu. Never doubt my loyalty to you."

She wasn't aware of the grin that slowly appeared on his face, since she was a little ways behind him, but her praise filled him with bubbling confidence.

I will lend you some of my power.

The dragon slayer showed his appreciation internally and before Lucy even comprehended the action, bright flames had spiraled around them. An orange vortex spun wildly howling like a tornado. The blonde had to fight against the spell's intensity just to keep herself upright. It was magnificent to her. She watched in amazement as wisps of fire flew past her at high speeds before it swarmed around her friend's stature. The founder of Magnolia's sworn protector remained motionless while the crimson fire danced alongside her.

Lucy distinguished the visual contrast in his fire. The difference between the color of his flames, bright orange versus this new dark red. She theorized it must have had something to do with his demon nature. The woman still struggled with fully accepting that the man she harbored feelings for was a revived machine meant for evil doings. It just sounded ludicrous! How could such a loving soul be a part of something so twisted? But there was no denying the facts and so Lucy forced those thoughts further into the deepest parts of her mind. Now was not the time to dwell on the past. The future was much more important.

I have encased your friend within one of my various curses. This curse will act like a shield which will prevent her from being harmed. In doing so, I want you to use your lightning reservations and strike the very place where she rests. The bolt should spark enough energy to hopefully bring her back.

Hopefully?

There is no guarantee but do not fear about frying the girl. This barrier cannot be broken through.

The fire mage frowned, not entirely confident anymore about his other half's idea. If it went wrong, which was a high possibility with his newfound strength, the chance of a fatal accident was high.

She will not die. I won't let that happen.

Natsu sealed his eyes shut and took a deep breath. It was the only plan they had and so they'd have to give it a go. He focused all his magic power in one single spot, the body of Mavis Vermillion, as he sensed the magic particles flying abruptly in the chamber. He reopened them and felt a spike in power. It was an overwhelming sensation and one that initiated a surge. Natsu released a ferocious roar that bounced off the walls before a black lightning bolt suddenly appeared out of thin air. The lightning struck their founder's body... or so Lucy thought.

She watched the bolt become absorbed by the hissing flames, disappearing just as fast as it had originally appeared! The showing left her dumbfounded and her mind was barely observant of the dragon slayer falling to his knees. The flames died down and he slumped over the unconscious girl. Only now, Mavis was no longer unconscious. The direct strike had penetrated whatever spell she was under and her fingers slowly began to react. Her eyelids opened in shock revealing dark green irises.

Mavis immediately latched onto his arm as she pushed the dazed slayer backwards. Her bright orbs twinkled like literal stars after she recognized the familiar handsome face and darkened black hair above her.

"Zeref?!" The girl spoke in excitement. "It really is you!" She smiled until a cold wave washed over her. Natsu's own eyes revealed themself and she instinctively shivered at the red coloring in them. Although the face and hair were similar, this man's appearance was clearly different than whom she had mistaken him for. He had several jagged scars over his left cheek that raced up nearly into his eye. Likewise, the spiky hair was pink, not black.

Everything that had happened between her comatose beginnings and her releasing came back to her. This was not the Black Wizard that the nation feared. This was one of her own guild mages... and one of Zeref's activated demons.

"I'm sorry, Natsu. I thought you were someone else." She apologized, a little embarrassed by her hiccup. The seriousness of the situation though quickly removed that notion. Mavis had found out during her time as a ghost who and what Natsu Dragneel really was. Now, back in her own physical body and mind, she was looking at her worst fears. Would one of Fairy Tail's brightest still be around after the war? Would Fairy Tail even still be around after the war?

For Natsu it was oddly the same. Knowing the truth of who he was and the blood relationship he had with the Black Wizard, the dragon slayer solemnly nodded in understanding. His demon half didn't have to tell him what the end result of this incoming war would be. It was all too clear. One of the Dragneel brothers would have to perish for this to be over. Natsu was Ishgar's last hope while Zeref was Ishgar's impending doom.

"It's alright. I'm just glad to see your memory is okay. You do remember everything, right?"

"Yes. It's all there."

"Phew, that's a relief!" He chuckled and attempted to help Mavis to her feet. The girl was cautious though to take his hand and instead pushed herself up off the floor. That action formed a small frown but Natsu already had hidden it before either of them noticed.

"Master Mavis... how are you still..." Lucy trailed off in wonder at seeing the lighter-colored blonde physically present and seemingly unharmed, even unphased from her decades-long slumber.

"Alive?" She finished the phrasing for the speechless wizard who nodded in turn. "I'm not quite sure myself." Mavis admitted before lowering her voice. "Perhaps Zeref is the reason."

His razor-edged hearing picked up the whispered answer and both halves inside wondered the true meaning behind her words.

Can Zeref really be the reason she is still alive, E.N.D?

He never put any memories or mentions of this 'Mavis' anywhere in his Books. So, I doubt the Black Wizard is the cause of her life duration. However, we can't entirely rule it out just yet for the chance of it being true are entirely possible.

But if so, how can that be real?

Natsu... there are some things that even I unfortunately do not have the answer to. This is one of them. The possibilities are endless, but the only ones who know the truth in this are our creator and the founder of your guild. I have a feeling neither party have revealed their true past to those closest to them.

The dragon slayer was seconds from questioning his inner demon's belief, only for that to stall out after he heard Mavis' voice call out to him.

"Natsu you must save Makarov while we still have the chance. You're the only one capable of sparing his life against Zeref's forces."

"I don't-"

"He'll do it." Lucy interrupted; her own determination flashed in those earnest brown irises. "We'll do it." She added before his hand was clutched within hers. "We won't let you or Gramps down, First Master." The blonde decided to use the guild's nickname for their old man in hopes of adding motivation for the slayer. It also identified the promise that had just been made. Natsu internally groaned knowing he had to follow through with the Celestial wizard's directly hinted vow.

"Thank you, Lucy." Mavis said appreciatively and the two blondes shared a grateful smile. The two women had different reasonings of course, but they both pinpointed directly at the same target. One frustrated fire mage, or as he was now, a fire demon. To Natsu's surprise, Mavis approached him cautiously before she forcefully grabbed his hands.

"Show me." The Fairy Tactician ordered, Natsu narrowing his eyes in response. "The demonic energy that now flows through you. It's different then the last time I felt it."

"Felt what?"

"You don't have to hide it from me, Natsu." Mavis spoke under her breath. "Although Zeref never directly told me about your creation... it was pretty easy to decipher after all the pieces aligned themselves together." She mused and he watched as those green eyes hardened. "I know now that you are E.N.D."

Natsu's emotional shield flared immediately and he prepared to push her away - only to stop himself. He was tired of running from his problems. Lucy had nearly broken down the walls, but now it was Zeref's own love interest that helped make his decision. Igneel hadn't died for him to just leave the rest of the world behind or allow himself to be swallowed in self-pity. He was better than this! It was time for him to make a stand and do things the way in which he wanted them to be done.

That's it. View this as an opportunity and not a curse. E.N.D held off the amusement at his own pun. Zeref's ultimate weakness is his trust in us. We are the only one who he views as family and that means loyalty to Alvarez's emperor. But we both know where our loyalties truly lie.

Mavis sensed his reluctance before it vanished all together. With no warning whatsoever, the extraordinary heat increase forced the reawakened founder to release him and the rejuvenated demon's traits displayed themselves for her to see. Those onyx eyes were now crimson and further black streaks ran wildly through his pink hair. Jet black horns protruded from underneath it and she only gaped in response.

"There's more... but I'm still figuring the rest of that out." Natsu admitted and Mavis realized his tone was sharper. "Or we still are."

"We?" Mavis asked in confusion, the blondes' expressions mirroring each other. "Natsu, are you saying that someone else... is inside you?"

"Where are we going?" Lucy asked for the third time after she was dragged up the spiral that led back to the guild's main structure. Her friend, to her annoyance, continued to ignore her words. Even though he had completely locked himself away and left Mavis' question in the air, the evidence was there. That key detail from the night before slipped the blonde's mind as she completely had forgotten that Zeref mentioned something along the lines that a creature was inside him. This was an opportunity that led her to believe maybe Natsu wasn't a demon after all! He might just be tied to one! The woman would eventually get him to talk. For now, Lucy decided she was content with that little bit of info and comfort.

If Zeref did in fact capture this other friend of yours then it is likely he left a trail behind for us to follow.

You think so?

This is Zeref we're talking about. I know so. He is cunning and deadly, and I mean that in the literal sense, but every decision he makes is meaningful. Zeref wouldn't waste his time with inferior beings if he didn't have a use for them. He wants us to pay him a visit, Natsu. I would say his patience has grown thin and so now he's opted on forcing us out of Ishgar to venture out to his little empire. Sounds like fun.

I'm absolutely thrilled.

That's the spirit!

"The palace." Natsu finally responded after internally rolling his eyes at the demon's enthusiasm.

"Alright..." Lucy nodded, grateful he had answered that burning question. "But we still need to find Mest."

"No, we don't." He shook his head.

"What?"

"I'll get us to the palace."

"Natsu, be reasonable." Lucy insisted and his nonchalant response caused her to sigh. She forced their momentum to a grinding halt and let her hand slip free from his.

The slayer's irises glowed, still having some of that previous transformation present, but Lucy remained firm with reasoning and stood her ground against his stubbornness. "Mercurius is a dayslong walking distance, less if you want to take the train but we already know how that discussion will go." She giggled into her hand. "Mest on the other hand can teleport us right into it and maybe even assist in whatever it is you want to check out. What is it that has your attention by the way?"

"Hisui being taken can't be by coincidence."

"Natsu... we already know this and have been over this." Lucy dropped her gaze. "It's clear now that he's after you."

"That's not what I meant!" His fists clenched in frustration before he reversed the action, conscious of his anger. He knew he needed to get ahold of his temper before it destroyed him.

She gently placed a hand on his back and ran her finger around in a spiral against the fabric of his vest. "Easy, tiger. Then what did you mean? I'll listen." She asked rather softly.

"He has Gramps and the Crown Princess."

"Our leader and Fiore's leader." Lucy echoed his thought process. "Ishgar is about to be thrown into an actual war, isn't it?" The frown on his features confirmed her fears. Fairy Tail had just been restored following a fierce war to save magic and themselves! Now they were being thrusted into a second war, one that would likely be the ultimate battle. "That's why Hisui was kidnapped! He's going to invade us to reach you. Wait... he had the chance though in my apartment. Why wouldn't he just-"

"I'm not the true target, Lucy." Natsu openly revealed and he recalled Mavis' insistence on alerting the guild to what was coming. The idea of this restored young girl ascending into command and taking initiative after having been locked in a stasis for decades came to mind. He found little amusement though in her trying to rule over a bunch of young teens. It was likely that their guild was already preparing and discussing whatever was known about Alvarez. The reality that they knew hardly anything on Zeref's empire, and yet the man everything about Ishgar, began to set in. "This entire world is."

The Celestial mage was horrified at Natsu's vague description. She wasn't entirely sure how her best friend knew this, perhaps Mavis had hit the nail on the head. But Natsu wouldn't budge on any further details. She was annoyed at the feeling of being kept in the dark, especially when there was a high chance that the world would be fighting for its life now should Natsu's beliefs ring true. That was exactly why she had requested Levy's presence as soon as they left the crystal chamber. It turned out the blue-haired bookworm had already planned a visit to the Magic Council that day, to submit their guild reinstatement papers, so she was more than willing to accept her best friend's request.

"I need you to do all the research on Alvarez you can before we get back and also find all you can on..." Lucy hesitated mid speech after realizing where her thoughts were leading. She couldn't give up on him. He wasn't showing any real signs of darkness and as long as she was at his side Lucy believed he would always remain the bright mage he was. She just knew he would. But the key wielder also had a preconceived notion that he was withholding crucial knowledge from her. They needed to know everything about his secret nature in case the worst happened. Obviously, Natsu wasn't going to spill any of that on his own anytime soon.

This is only so I can help him if he needs me. Nothing more and nothing less.

"Find everything you can on the demon known as E.N.D." She voiced after justifying her stance.

Levy's eyebrows rose momentarily before they settled back into place. "You got it, Lu. I overheard Erza talking earlier about your guys' rescue mission. Take care of yourself out there and make sure to stay on your toes!" Her octave level decreased slightly. "What you're all about to do is really dangerous so... just come back safe, you hear Lucy?"

"With our team you never know what just might happen." The woman in question joked in an attempt to lighten the mood.

Her expression fell and those lips formed into a frown. "Don't do anything reckless. I know Natsu has started to rub off on you over the years." Lucy embraced her blue-haired best friend in a much needed hug and the action helped soothe each of their fears as they giggled at the reprimanding to the dragon slayer's destructive nature. When they pulled away, both stood there with smiles present.

"Wishing you the best of luck."

"I have a feeling we're all going to need it." Lucy responded calmly before walking towards the door. "Anything you find... keep it between us, okay?" Her voice fell to a whisper. Levy saw a pleading-like look which swirled around in those brown eyes.

She was a little alarmed at the desperation being shown, slowly beginning to wonder what secrets the Council held on the demon and what Lucy might already know about it. But not wanting to pry and make her friend even more distressed, Levy opted on nodding instead. "My lips are sealed, Lu. No one shall know of my findings outside of you, me... and E.N.D."

How far can you go?

As far as you need to. Range isn't a concern. I mean, how else would Zeref go from place to place so quickly? Although now that I think about it, might be wise to make a few smaller jumps prior to Alvarez just to make sure the rust is all off.

I'm sure we'll be fine.

I've been trapped under a spell for a while, believe it or not, and have only done one teleportation since being released. If you want to take the chance of crossing into another continent on just the second attempt, be my guest. But I can't guarantee Lucy or your friends would still make it there in one piece.

You mean all of us in one piece.

No, I mean your friends. I could easily get us in. The rest though are a different story.

Why?

What happened to that brain of yours? Oh, I forgot it's been mine the entire time.

Oh, that's so it! You are-

Wonderful? Trust me, I already knew that. He imagined the demon flashing him a smug expression. Natsu, it's not as easy as you might think trying to teleport an entire group of people. Let alone trying to teleport more than just yourself to a location as far away as Alvarez is.

I get that but-

Your captured friends have time. The demon expressed knowing exactly what was driving the dragon slayer's eagerness. Zeref may be growing impatient but he wouldn't kill them just for the fun of it. They're hostages for a reason. Unfortunately, that reason is us.

Then what's the plan? I assume it's going to have to be something stealthy isn't it...

You're telling me you don't want to just bust right in and take them back? Well, color me surprised!

Obviously I want too! Natsu hissed at his other half. But this is Zeref we're talking about.

Afraid?

No! It's just...

We hold something that even Zeref doesn't have, Natsu. Know what that is? He went to respond but the demon continued onwards without waiting for an answer. A burning flame inside.

Natsu was expecting some monumental secret that would help them outlast Alvarez... so he was very befuddled after hearing that. One second, two seconds, three seconds,

How the hell is that supposed to help us?!

It's not. The demon snickered in amusement. Your guild is totally outnumbered and now I'm confident that girl, the one who just awakened, will be a major component in this upcoming battle.

You keep saying we're going to war with Alvarez and that Zeref wants to destroy the world, and yet they haven't even flinched!

Which is why you must make the first move once we arrive. It is likely that Zeref's strongest will be nearby. Any chance we get to crush his forces we must take, Natsu. The less he has for his invasion, the better.

The dragon slayer remained impassive for a few moments. Lucy saw the calculated look on his face. He was thinking... and that alone scared her!

"Natsu?"

Do you have a destination in mind?

I think so.

If you can paint a clear picture of it within your mind it'll be easier for me to make it happen.

A clear picture, huh? Oh wait... I think I got it!

The Crown Princess' bedroom. An interesting choice.

Only way to know for sure why exactly she was taken.

How so?

I expect she was kidnapped right after he showed up at Lucy's.

Which was at night.

Exactly and if what you've told me is true... then I assume Zeref might have left a lead for us.

Which will give an idea exactly where we need to teleport. Good thinking, weaker me!

"We're going somewhere really quick to find answers Luce, so grab my arm!" He advised, once more ignoring his other half's insult. "But if you'd rather stay behind then-"

"Unless you have a method of teleporting us, I don't see how we're going anywhere." She stated before stopping herself short after seeing his widening grin. "No... surely you're joking!" Lucy stared at him in disbelief. "Is this one of your new fire tricks?" She questioned while she wrapped an arm around his own.

"Eh, something like that." Natsu chuckled as fire suddenly began spinning a ring under their feet. The blazing circle mesmerized her and she watched the fire scorch the grass.

"You're lucky I trust-" That statement never finished itself. A muffled yelp was followed by a trace of smoke and sizzling embers as they departed Magnolia in style.

They vanished in an instant only to reappear inside Hisui's chamber. The irony was they had just been here a few days prior.

"Idiot..." She shook her head. "What if you had teleported us somewhere out in the middle of the ocean?"

"Then I hope wherever we ended up wouldn't have salt water." He laughed, having an idea his friend feared those monstrous sea creatures that sported razor sharp teeth. Or as they were commonly known in Earth Land, sharks.

Lucy's mind unconsciously drifted over to the green-haired princess' balcony. That was the place they had confessed their feelings for each other and likewise shared their first kiss. She placed a hand over her heart and smiled. The woman was still unsure of their status, as they had not had the time to discuss it for obvious reasons. So, did this make the dragon slayer her potential boyfriend now? Lucy's stomach fluttered at that thought.

I would love for you to be.

Hey daydreams were interrupted once she heard her friend abruptly hiss. She quickly turned her attention back to the room in concern for him before she froze. A black cloud had entered the luxurious chamber. The dashing interior now resembled a murky and malevolent shadow, one that seemed to have them trapped.

"Natsu?"

The fire mage hurriedly withdrew his hand. A hand that now had a burn mark on it. Lucy's eyes widened at that. She noticed the peculiar object that resided at the foot of her friend's bed. That had never been there before as far as she knew. The item was a pale red plushie. Coloring that had extremely faded over the years. The more she looked at it, the more Lucy realized the stuffed animal looked a lot like... a dragon!

Natsu slowly backed away and she noticed her friend slightly shivering as if he was cold. But there was no way that could be the case! Since Lucy had known him, she had never once seen him effected by freezing temperatures. Even in extreme conditions such as a blizzard.

The slayer sensed his demon half's shock at seeing the toy. The thing was battered to no end and at this point it barely looked like one of those winged legends. In fact, the only thing that did help him distinguish it were the wings.

Is this-

Yes. E.N.D immediately answered and Natsu felt his pulse intensify. This is what we held the night we died.

Suddenly, a dragon's cry elicited from the plushie and both mages respectively covered their ears in a hurry.

"Hello dear brother." The stuffed toy's eyes opened which revealed a full sphere of white light. "I hope this message finds you well. I would be lying if I said I hadn't enjoyed this little back and forth dispute between us over the past year. After all, you never did want to listen to me when we were still just children."

Natsu felt his anger flare, wondering if it was his own or E.N.D's.

"We come from different backgrounds at this point in time though so it makes perfect sense siblings would squabble every so often." He heard the amusement laced within that phrase. "Alas, I'm afraid our time together is coming to a close... much like this era's. Soon, brother, I will have all the power needed to wash away my sins of the past and become free from my original fate. Once I acquire this artifact, nothing will be able to stop me from restoring this world's tragedies. Acnologia must be defeated before it's too late."

The hopeful white light in the plushie's eyes faded until now they were just cold, coal cylinders.

"Lives will be saved and futures will be changed. In order for me to do so though, I will have to restructure this world. Or in much simpler terms... I will have to destroy it. That would mean the end of Fairy Tail..."

Those ominous orbs shifted as if the Black Wizard was suddenly speaking directly to them in real time from afar.

"As well as the end for you, Natsu." He openly stated and Lucy began to shake in fright. It was like they were back in her apartment. The night that Zeref arrived. She felt so powerless. So, empty. "Your existence as a human mage will cease to exist. As will Igneel's teachings to you. In truth, this will be the case for all dragons. No dragon slayers shall be in my new world... because there won't be any dragons left to slay once Acnologia is wiped out."

Horns protruded upwards from underneath his hair and his canines transformed back into long fangs. In rage, he picked up the plushie that still spoke to them. Despite the burning sensations running through his scaly claw, E.N.D focused on disintegrating the childhood reminder.

"Apologies in advance for the troubling news, Natsu." It's hideous voice spoke as the top half became disconfigured. "I know Lucy must be devastated. Oh, and by the way? The princess is in another castle - one within the Alvarez Empire."

The entire entity turned into ash and Natsu watched with slitted eyes as the remains silently fell to the floor.

Try as she might, Lucy was unable to reach her best friend who remained silent on the matter. Normally his old demeanor would have gone on a rant about how evil of a person Zeref was and how he needed to be beaten up into a pulp. But the display of his power just now erased any remains of the old Natsu.

She could tell he was angry. More than that probably. Yet, he kept it all bottled up inside of him. He had matured so much in just a short amount of time... and time seemed to be something they were running out of. She watched as the King of the Fire Dragons walked out onto the balcony and simply stared up at the sun. For a few minutes, she stood in place and let the man have his moment to himself. Considering he was all about fire; Lucy inferred the sun's rays must have felt peaceful and allowed him to relax for once. He obviously didn't want to talk right now and just needed quietness. She willingly accepted that and was prepared to give him it.

Which is why the Celestial wizard was surprised when he suddenly spoke out of the blue. "What are we going to do, Luce?"

Her head tilted itself in confusion, doing so in a way that Natsu dare say was cute. Her lips straightened out as she made her way through the curtains and joined him once more on the ledge. "What do you mean, Natsu?"

You know what must be done.

"What do we do once we get to Alvarez?" He questioned her, while at the same time, himself. "If we want to get Hisui or Gramps back, we obviously have to go face h-him."

His words began stumbling as that strong barrier cracked a tad. Lucy grabbed his right hand, the one that had thankfully not turned into a claw during his anger, as she intertwined their fingers. She could feel the heat resonating there and sensed his fear. She squeezed his hand, encouraging him to continue.

"W-What if... we don't make it back? To Magnolia, to our friends." He whispered and faced her fully for the first time. In an instant, his left arm's transformation subsided and he clutched both of her hands passionately. "I'm not losing you to this bastard. Or any of our friends. I'll gladly give up my life it means this world can be saved."

As much as Lucy wanted to lash out at him for such morbid thinking, she knew that was the dragon slayer's nature. So, instead of rebuking him, she carefully nodded at his line of thinking. "I support whatever you decide to do, Natsu." She whispered as she leaned in and planted a light kiss on his cheek. "But I also won't sit back and let you tackle this on your own you know."

She glanced downwards to her hip, to the place where her belt held those special keys. One of those keys being a dagger that modified itself into a sword upon command. A key given to her by the dragon slayer in front of her.

"If we are to take him down... we'll do so together."

"Everything looks to be in order." He hummed to himself before lowering the parchment and delivering a smile to the anxious bluenette. "Erza Scarlet as Guildmaster. A fitting choice."

"So, that means we're official now, right? Fairy Tail is a guild again?" Levy questioned.

"Indeed." The Councilman and former Lamia Scale member, Jura Neekis, answered. The woman let her enthusiasm be known as she jumped in the air and hollered in celebration.

"Woohoo!"

"I look forward to seeing what direction Miss Scarlet and the rest of your guild take Fairy Tail in. Hopefully, good news will come up soon on Makarov's whereabouts. I'd like to discuss some important matters with him."

Levy hesitantly nodded, looking downwards at her feet.

"This is bittersweet though." He announced with folded arms that went across his chest and underneath Council robes. "You've been a great help to us, Levy. We will miss your diligence and dedication to the good of the people."

"Is there something wrong?" Jura asked once he noticed the woman's distracted state.

"It's... nothing." Her words tapered off. She had thought about mentioning Makarov's imprisonment in Alvarez but decided against it. Erza had sternly ordered that very little people were to know about this operation. She would follow those orders, even if it meant misleading a good friend. "Actually Jura, I was hoping I could check the archives really quick." She gave him a puppy dog smile but frowned after seeing his reluctance. "Please?"

"As a high ranking member of the Council and someone who is considered to be trustworthy, normally you would have full access to that area yourself. But with the revival of Fairy Tail and your departure from our ranks, you have lost those privileges" Jura stated evenly. He saw the girl's stance deflate. "However, if someone grants you those privileges then I see no reason as to why not. After everything you've done for us, you of all people shouldn't be withheld whatever knowledge it is that you seek to find. For that, I grant you permission Levy McGarden." He smiled and handed her a special lacrima. "Do be quick about it though. I'd rather nobody find out."

"You got it! I'll be in there just a few minutes, I promise." She bowed in polite. "Thank you so much Jura!"

"As I said before the Council thanks you for your commitment to us the past year. Without you we never would have been successful in ridding out all the corruption. Now, I'll be down the hall if you need me." The Earth mage expressed before he left her alone with her thoughts.

Alright! Let's get to work!

They had decided to go back to his cottage, which Lucy already had predicted was going to be a total mess. She wasn't entirely sure when Natsu learned how to teleport with his fire, but she had to admit it was rather convenient and a huge advantage for them to have heading into a potential life or death situation. Also known as a war. Without her knowing though, it was actually E.N.D. who had insisted on Natsu using their powers more in order to practice jumping longer distances.

So, teleporting into his living room was a genuine surprise for her after she realized it was clean. It didn't look like a natural disaster had gone through it!

"Aww." Lucy cooed as she fussed over his clean home. "Someone is actually being responsible for once." He rolled her eyes at that as she plopped down on the couch and made herself comfortable.

"Sure, sure make yourself at home. Despite me not even inviting you in yet, weirdo." He teasingly smirked and she responded by sticking out her tongue at him. Even with all the tension around his demon side and their upcoming rescue mission, he authentically enjoyed being able to just be alone with Lucy.

His blonde-haired best friend, who was almost right by his side as much as Happy, had ensnared herself inside the dragon slayer's mind... and around his heart. Natsu still didn't entirely understand what all his body was going through or why his heartbeat would accelerate every time she got close to him. Grazing her skin was like dropping a lit match onto a wooden floor. She was the spark and he was the fire. And it was destructive.

He loved everything about her. He cherished her. How could he not? Watching her future self-die right in front of his very own eyes had shaken him for an entire year. That forever would be a hellish night to him. A night that was the real reason he decided to always be around the woman should she welcome his presence. Not only did he enjoy her company, but he felt if he strayed too far away then he would lose her. He was not going to lose Lucy.

There was just something about the key wielder that got him all fired up inside. He chuckled internally at the use of his catchphrase, but that statement easily summarized their companionship. It was also the truth. The shiny blonde hair, those brown doe eyes that always were full of curiosity and hope, the curves of her figure that he had recently become more receptive to, her milky-white and smooth skin, that forever enticing scent that he knew was his Lucy... she was perfect. He imagined Igneel would say something like, 'she is the one.'

He entered his bedroom, letting her know he would be occupied for a few minutes, and grabbed his classic backpack as well as several smaller duffel bags. Unless he misheard her, Natsu was pretty positive their newest Guildmaster mentioned they would be leaving in the early hours of dawn and that the trip would take nearly a week. He glared at himself through the mirror realizing what transportation they would have to take while crossing the sea.

About that.

Hmm?

Never mind. I'll let you find out on your own once we set sail.

Okay...

Even knowing who it was that was inside him, it still caught Natsu off guard from time to time whenever the demon would randomly respond to one of his thoughts.

Just keeping you on your toes kid.

We're literally the same age.

Glad to see you embracing it!

She heard rather loud crashes coming from the pinkette's bedroom and she mused that he must be struggling to pack his own belongings.

Some things will never change.

Oddly, Lucy was grateful for that. Everything had moved so fast that lately it felt like she was falling behind and just managing to keep up. What she wanted to keep up with though she wasn't entirely sure. Was it the dragon slayer whose home she currently stood in? Or was it something else? While pondering on this internal dilemma, the blonde entered a room she knew all too well. The memorabilia room.

This was the one room in the run-down cottage that hadn't changed one bit. It was also now the only one which was in complete disorder. Various artifacts and fliers were displayed either on shelves or along the ground. To her delight the maid outfit she wore on their official first mission as a team, which had started as just her, the slayer, and his exceed, remained in perfect condition on a hanger against the wall. That mission, which at the time was a total roller coaster, still evoked fond memories. It also just so happened to be the day where she acquired Virgo after the Celestial Spirit was freed from that Duke's filthy clutches.

Her eyes quickly scanned the rest of the room, prepared to go assist her friend should he need it. But she stopped in her tracks after those brown spheres landed on something brand new. She had never seen it before. To be fair, it had been nearly an entire year since she had even stepped foot in this room. This structure was definitely new the more she examined it. It wasn't anything special really, at least appearance wise. It was just a normal bulletin board from afar. But the closer she looked, the more she saw.

Seven, Bosco, Stella. These are all neighboring countries to Fiore. Minstrel, too? I believe that's to the southeast of us.

Lucy squinted her eyes and saw scribble marks along the margins of the map. It reminded her of the map in her former apartment back in Crocus. But unlike hers, Natsu's map resembled more areas than just Fiore. His was all of Ishgar! A singular small red line was pinned all over the map as it stretched to every border present.

Goldcrest, Wellspring, Orange River...

Those were all town names. More were circled around the map and she used her finger to explore the pattern her friend had taken.

Ashborne, Haling Cove, Black Hallows... wait, Black Hallows? I've heard of that before! Lucy gasped as she realized the red line she had been following abruptly stopped and she had to backtrack just to find it. Her heart dropped after it dawned on her what the red line represented. A singular picture stuck itself into to the board and she saw the fierce dragon staring straight through her. She didn't even need to look at the name to know who it was or what the location underneath his name would be. Yet, Lucy did anyway.

TARTAROS' CUBE.

She saw the burn marks all around the little spec on the board and realized this is where the fire mage must of came the night he departed for his training expedition. Those scorch marks were his fury against the world for taking his father figure from him. She longed for his heart to heal, but deep down the intelligent wizard knew Igneel's demise would always be a simmering volcano. That was something they had in common. The pain of losing someone close never truly washes away.

Lucy cautiously followed the new blue spring that replaced the red one. A lead that her friend believed would lead allow him to enact justice. Her eyebrows rose in surprise as the lines stretched all the way into the Pergrande Kingdom!

Natsu ventured that far outwards during his absence?! She noticed the final pinpoint on the board was a place called Dragontail. This one had an attachment stuck to it and she saw aggressive scribbles and crinkled edges.

Dead end, nothing but bones and ruins. Dragnof next.

Lucy's own heart ached now. Not only did she imagine his irritation while writing that final note, but she was horrified to learn what her dragon slayer was doing in his spare time. He's already been hunting Acnologia.

Instantaneously her mind drifted back to Margaret Town. Right after he returned from defeating Bluenote Stinger, Natsu accidentally let his intentions to hunt the Black Dragon slip and it had infuriated her, almost starting an argument.

That was the maddest she had felt in a very long time. This now trumped it with ease. She felt her trust had been betrayed. He had promised her he wouldn't be going after that winged beast and now she had come to find out that he already was actively searching for it. Lucy sensed a presence behind her and didn't even think about giving him the benefit of the doubt. She refused to let him give up and take the easy way out. He was better than that!

"Why are you so determined to face him, Natsu! He will rip you to shreds!" She shouted and saw that contentedness transfer into confusion.

"What?"

"Igneel sacrificed his final moments up in order to protect you! Did you forget that? He didn't do it just so you could throw your life away trying to get revenge!" The irate woman expressed.

The pinkette raised a brow, totally clueless as to why she was berating him before his eyes glanced over to the bulletin board. He paled. "Ok, that explains it." He sheepishly scratched the back of his neck.

"Natsu..." The Celestial Wizard was unable to growl like he could, but the one she managed was pretty damn close to being feral.

"It's not what you think!" He put his hands up trying to calm her down.

"Yes, it is! You told me you weren't going to go after Acnologia... but yet you've already crossed into countries and towns to track him. He's a dragon, Natsu! Not an outlaw!"

"I know-"

"Please, put an end to this suicide nonsense." Lucy begged before she turned away from him. "You're my entire world, Natsu. To expect me to just sit back and watch you go through with this... I can't do it. I can't lose you." Her message was finished with a whisper.

The dragon slayer understood the seriousness of the situation and so he stopped his attempts to explain himself. He mindfully approached her, testing the waters first to see how she would react. When the blonde remained stationary, he gently drew her into his arms and supported her. He didn't have to see the tears to know they were there. Her faint hiccups were easily detected by his sensitive hearing as well as the other sharp senses of a dragon slayer.

"Easy, Luce." He consoled the distraught woman, recognizing how eerily similar this was to earlier when they were leaving the chamber. She responded to his action by leaning further into his frame as she lifted her chin to look up at him. He mentally cursed himself for making her cry, yet again, as he wiped away those droplets that had spilled down her cheeks. "I'm not going anywhere."

"Promise?" She sniffled and Natsu was compelled to notice that vulnerability. He felt himself become increasingly lost in those shiny eyes and barely found the control to break out of it.

"I promise." He declared and tried clearing his mind. Then an idea formed. "Come on, I wanna show you something."

"S-Show me what?"

He gave her his toothy smile before he dragged her back in front of the bulletin board.

"Natsu, I've already seen it." She stated.

"Yeah, you saw Igneel and Acnologia's." He agreed. "But did you see the third one?"

"The third what?"

"Watch." He instructed and she saw the tip of his finger point to the blue string, and then it lit on fire!

"Natsu, what are you doing?! You'll burn it!" She worriedly called out in concern for his lack of awareness destroying such a valuable possession that obviously meant a lot to him. But Lucy piped down after seeing his calm demeanor.

He didn't need to reply as the other side of the coin, or in this case the alternate reason for his tracking, unveiled itself to her fully. She stared at the fiery crossings that ran parallel with Acnologia's line, but also diverged into various directions.

"What is this?" She questioned in astonishment. "It's... beautiful."

"Like a certain someone in this room?" He quipped and her head spun around so fast he thought it might fall off. Natsu still wasn't use to all this romance stuff. Things learned from his talks with Gildarts in the past were beginning to run on empty and he found himself dangerously shy of unknown territory. He had reached the point where he simply was just winging it. "You were right Luce that I already started to track Acnologia. But you were wrong in your belief that it was just him I've been seeking out."

"He's not?"

"Nope." He slowly eased her fears. "I know this is something I probably should have informed you on sooner, but I kept it secret only because I didn't want to add further pain to what already was there. Ya know, when the guild disbanded and I left."

Lucy was hesitant to follow the hint he had given her. Her expression must have confirmed that considering he burst out into fits of laughter. She crossed her arms and waited for an explanation. Which definitely wasn't happening anytime soon at the sight of his bubbling figure. While he recovered from his amusement, Lucy studied the trails of flame and saw messages written out. One specific message piqued her interest.

Venzor: Nobody seems to know anything about Celestial Spirits or magic keys for that matter. Although I wouldn't count this place out just yet. A future visit with Lucy could be useful.

"Celestial Spirits... keys?" She asked aloud, but mostly it was directed at herself. "Natsu, is t-this?"

"The progress of our journey to find Aquarius?" He began and saw new life in her eyes. "What do you think weirdo, of course it is!"

Once the former Councilwoman was inside, it was relatively easy to find information on Alvarez. The Magic Council had plenty of it stored inside their archives and Levy wondered why most of this knowledge was hidden from the legal guilds. It was already known they were based in Alakitasia but what was most concerning... was the amount of info that were actually stored away inside this room. Tensions were high between the two continents and the Council decided to let it just sit here, practically untouched!

"They have no idea what they're doing..." She mumbled in annoyance, already somewhat regretting her decision to leave. The blue-haired woman went through another stack of archives, scanning them with her Gale-Force glasses until she found something worthwhile. Levy sincerely hoped Jura and the others didn't let her hard work go to waste in the coming months. "If we even have that long." She added in an afterthought upon reading that Alvarez' magic warfare unit housed more than two million soldiers. That was justthe soldiers!

Alvarez is said to have a single dictator who has at least eight personal commanders that abide by his rules. These eight are believed to wield the same amount of power as their emperor himself.

What?!

It was formerly considered that the Alvarez Empire consisted of eight high-ranking members whose power rivaled even their own ruler's. But, and this is to our deep concern, the number has exponentially risen from its original count. It now is up to 12.

"12!" She shrieked in alarm and instantly slapped a palm over her mouth. How can they have so many? How strong are they!

An even greater problem is that these commanders, who go by the Spriggan 12, have enough magic power to lay waste to continents in quick succession. Some of them are rumored to have done it to surrounding areas in one singular shot. They are also paraded by foreign nations for their supposed ability to outclass the Four Gods of Ishgar which makes them an extreme threat that should NOT be taken likely.

T-That can't be... no way...

Everything that is known about Alvarez comes from a relentless amount of spying and observation. The empire is very secluded on the inside and only a handful of knowledgeable scholars and Guildmasters know about the dangers this nation can deliver to all of Ishgar.

Levy stared into space for several minutes before preparing to power down the archives. This was too much. How did they even stand a chance against someone this powerful?! But, before she left the archives, something caught her attention. A singular file that was marked with three distinct letters.

E.N.D.

Recalling Lucy's desperate plea, she took a deep breath and timidly began to search the gathered intel.

This mythological being was once labeled as the Destroyer of All, a title that perfectly fit the mighty flame demon. Formed physically and spiritually by the Black Wizard-

Black Wizard? That's Zeref!

The foul monster reigned terror down upon the human race for years. Then it mysteriously vanished. The extent to its powers is still unknown, as are many things, such as the demon's identity. It was believed to be what Ishgar calls a 'shapeshifter' and many historians speculate E.N.D could still live amongst us in the present age, without anyone even knowing about it.

Levy felt a shiver go down her spine after she read that last line.

However, past history hints that this flaming disaster and the Black Wizard are related by blood and bounded in the dark arts. Therefore, should the creature ever fall in battle... the creator will perish as well. This ideology supports the belief that E.N.D is still around, because there are multiple counts of citizens who swear they've seen the Man in Black Robes. Former Chairman, Gran Doma, confirmed in a later Council meeting that the Black Wizard, who goes by the name of Zeref, does indeed still roam Earth Land and has come into contact with Ishgar before.

Feeling overwhelmed, Levy rapidly closed the archives down and darted back into the main hallway, where she heard raised voices. Curious as ever, she put a mental block on Alvarez and E.N.D.'s whereabouts and focused on the voices down the hall. She figured out one was Jura, which made sense considering he said he was going down this way when she originally snuck in, but who were the others?

"Watch where you're watering Warrod! You're spilling it-"

"Making a mess is fun. Besides, you can clean it up for me."

"If you say so, then I will..."

"Relax Jura. I was only joking." The tree-embodied mage, Warrod Sequen, chuckled.

Levy snuck closer into the quartering space as she hid behind the corner. She peeked her head out and was shocked at who she saw.

"You think these are joking times?" That one visible eye narrowed. "These are dangerous times we're living in… and you want to play jokes."

"Wolfheim!" Jura expressed. "I didn't realize you had even come in. My apologies."

"None taken friend. I figured it was wise I remain nearby in case something were to come up."

Warrod carelessly waved his arms about, spilling even more water, much to Jura's pain. "It's always an appropriate time for some laughter! Lighten up Wolfheim. In fact, the sound of your name always makes me guffaw." He acted on his words by raising a hand to cover his cheeky mouth. He saw the man, who now had both eyes distinguishable, glare. "You know I'm only playing around with you."

Wolfheim grit his teeth and glowed a yellow hue. Then he transformed! Instead of the short stature mage, now he was an enormous dark green ape-like monster. Ironically, even in this state, his dark blue glasses remained present much to Warrod's amusement. "See! Aren't jokes great?"

"Well, I don't find it the least bit funny!" The beast-man's voice altered into an aggressive snarl. "Tensions are continuing to escalate between Ishgar and Alvarez and your idea of dealing with it is watering plants and cracking jokes? Seriously?!"

"Calm yourself, please Wolfheim!" Jura stated, even he was taken back by the man's sudden transformation. Despite all of this, Warrod looked the least bit intimidated.

"That's quite enough." A smooth, but powerful voice commanded. One could tell they held major authority by the grace in which they moved about and spoke. Levy nearly fainted after seeing three of the Four Gods of Ishgar in the same room. "Our days of simply acting as we please are over. We are the august body of leadership and therefore our behavior needs to reflect our position accordingly."

Hyberion?!

The purple-haired leader raised his glass to his lips as he downed the milk that filled it. "As you said, tensions are indeed running high with the Alvarez Empire. But it is our duty to bring the world into an era of peace and stability." He affirmed before pulling out a champagne bottle and pouring more milk into his empty glass. "If a war erupted our defeat would be inevitable. That means the onus is upon us to find a peaceful resolution. If not, then Ishgar will be wiped out."

Levy, who had been barely peeking around the corner of the wall, elicited a small squeak. Or at least, it was small until she realized that the hall would carry the echo of the high-pitched sound. To her horror, that's exactly what it did.

"Come on out young lady." Draculos Hyberion ordered with a neutral expression. The bluenette knew she better explain herself quick lest she want to be thrown into custody.

"Er... hi." Levy gave a slight wave and Warrod happily returned it. "I am so, so sorry! I swear I wasn't trying to eavesdrop. I just-"

"You were trying to what?" Wolfheim interrogated and Levy felt the pressure building against her.

"She was trying to help us." The green-magic God of Ishgar spoke up in her behalf. "Fairy Tail was trying to help us." Warrod nodded kindly.

"Fairy Tail?" Hyberion questioned as he considered it. "And what by chance can they do to assist us?"

Levy glanced down at her sandals and saw a reflection of Erza shaking her head negatively. But as she looked back up, the intensive stares she was getting, and the supportive nod from Warrod, outclassed her Guildmaster's wishes. She had to tell them. They were the most powerful mages in Ishgar. They were the defenders; they had the right to know. She nervously held onto one of her arms as she opened the floodgates that would surely condemn her and her guild.

"Master Makarov is being held captive by the Alvarez Empire." Levy finally revealed and saw all three of the greats before her step back in visible shock. "It gets worse though."

"How could anything get worse than that? Wolfheim sputtered. "We knew of Makarov's disappearance, but nothing was ever said that he had gone into Alvarez!"

"Princess Hisui has gone missing." She mentioned and saw Hyberion preparing to interrupt up. Somehow, the normally timid woman, found the courage to speak over one of the strongest men in the continent.

"We already know-"

"She was taken by Zeref!"

That silenced Hyberion in his tracks. Once more he brought the glass of milk to his lips and contemplated this new information. The wait felt like forever to Levy. "How can we be sure of this, miss?"

"Levy, Levy McGarden." She introduced herself politely and stepped further into the room, feeling confident in her abilities now. Warrod smiled brightly at her from across the table which she returned.

Hyberion nodded, after sharing a serious look with Wolfheim, and regarded her with interest. "Well Miss McGarden, what proof do you have that the Black Wizard kidnapped King Toma's only daughter?

"I don't have any concrete proof, but..." Levy disclosed and did her best to ignore the unnerving stare coming from Wolfheim. "My friends are about to embark on a secret rescue mission. Erza Scarlet, Gray Fullbuster, Lucy Heartfilia, Natsu Dragneel, Wendy Marvell, and the dragon slayer's respective exceeds are all planning to infiltrate Alvarez and free both Master Makarov and Princess Hisui."

She went silent at that and wondered if she should even bring up what she had just learned from the archives. She was already treading on thin ice though and so she decided against. That info was saved for her guild, and the other part was saved specifically for her best friend.

She waited for a response, as the gathered Gods of Ishgar and Jura spoke amongst themselves. Finally, after once more what seemed like an eternity to Levy, Hyberion spoke without hesitation.

"Although I am deeply troubled with learning how secretive Fairy Tail has been towards the Magic Council lately... I will not interfere. Your friends must understand the risk they are taking however. If they are captured, there is a high chance they will be killed by the Alvarez military."

Levy paled at that thought but she believed in her friends. Every single one of them, even Wendy, who was trained with the powers to slay a dragon just like Natsu... they were all formidable in their own right. So, she trusted them!

"My friends understand that sir." She bowed out of respect. "But this is something they are determined to do. This is something my guild is determined to do." The vampire-mage gave her a small smirk, which she saw as genuine and realized this was someone who admired loyalty. "But I do have one question."

"Yes, what is it?"

The Solid Script wizard focused on recalling their earlier discussion and wording it in a way that wouldn't reveal she had illegally been in the archives. "You said that tensions have risen between us and them... and that they could annihilate us." Levy felt her palms grow sweaty just remembering the specifics of their army count, which was over two million! "Are they really that powerful? I mean, we do have God Serena fighting on our side. Along with you three!"

Hyberion's eyes closed before he reopened them, and she saw the warning sign in those dark red irises. Whatever was about to be spoken was only to be known between those in this room and what she believed was a green light for Fairy Tail's involvement.

"God Serena shares our history. Once a fellow God of Ishgar and the highest ranking member amongst the Wizard Saints. In short, he's rightfully considered to be the mightiest wizard on the continent."

"About that..." Jura intervened, with a look of confusion. "Why isn't he currently a member of the Magic Council?"

The Three Gods of Ishgar present all closed their eyes simultaneously as Jura and Levy suddenly felt cold. Something wasn't right.

"God Serena has abandoned Ishgar." Hyberion announced. "He's gone to Alakitasia and sworn his allegiance to Alvarez and Emperor Spriggan."

The two mages before him literally gasped in shock.

"This man has an elite personal guild, 12 of them to be exact, and our former comrade has joined them. It's quite troubling and would indicate that there are eleven others on par with the most powerful wizard from our continent. That alone is unsettling and sets what is at stake here. Our very future."

Levy didn't believe the news could get any worse. Oh, how she was so wrong.

"One other thing, Miss McGarden." Hyberion then delivered the final blow to her emotions. "Since this involves nobility… if I am to clear your guild to go on this operation of theirs – without being disbanded and imprisoned by the might of the Magic Council…" He saw her eyes light up in fright. "Then I must command Fairy Tail to focus on rescuing Princess Hisui over Makarov."

"What?" Warrod questioned in surprise, serious for the first time today. "But Makarov is a part of the Council!"

"Do not fight me on this one Warrod." He said icily. "I understand your own fondness for the old man as well as your respect for him. But as much as it pains me to say this in front of the young lady." Hyberion's eyes closed yet again. "Wizard Saints can be replaced. The heir to the Fiore Kingdom cannot."

"But sir…" Levy finally lost her strength. She fell to her knees and let the tears fall freely.

"Should your friends run into any trouble, which is highly likely considering who we are dealing with here, and they find themselves able to save only one of the intended targets… they are to rescue Hisui E. Fiore. That is an order. Anyone who defies that will face my judgement and my wrath."

Those red eyes flashed open for the last time, full of intensity, and Levy could only focus on one singular thought that rung throughout her entire mind.

Is this man a leader or a monster?

Lucy didn't even scold him for once more referring to her as lesser kind of strange, instead she happily leaped into his arms and sent them crashing towards the floor. Natsu, who had no idea that little stunt was coming, helplessly fell with her and took the entire blow.

"I'm gonna take that as a, 'Thank you Natsu, you're the best dragon slayer in the world!'" He stated after his head stopped spinning.

The Celestial wizard rolled her eyes and knew it was about time the man's ego was brought down a few notch. Teasing his gentle side always seemed to do the trick!

"I was thinking more of a 'Thank you Natsu, you're the best boyfriend a runaway could ask for." She smirked as she leaned down and captured his lips. Once more her decision had completely caught him by surprise. She had been bold in her actions before, but she had never called him that either!Natsu might not be the brightest person in the world, but he did learn from Gildarts and Alzack what the b-word and g-words meant.

"You're... y-you called me..." His mind completely shut down for a few seconds and he went on autopilot.

"Cat got your tongue?" Lucy said mischievously as they stayed like they were. "I'm what, Natsu?" She could see his enhanced eyes traveling all over her and knew her feminine figure was finally breaking down the dense man's steel walls. She loved having a physical charm that affected him.

"My girlfriend?"

"I was looking for something more like... pretty, Natsu. You know, the word that old geezer always uses when describing the countless girls that we know he chases." She mockingly pouted, deciding to tease him further over Gildarts' teachings. "But I'll take being your girlfriend just as much!" Chances of getting the upper hand on the prankster that he was were very rare and so this was too good of an opportunity for her to pass up. She was going to make the most of it.

"I already said you were though. Actually, now that I think about it, I used something even better to describe you!"

"Which was sweet!" She cooed. "Also, you indirectly said it, not directly." Lucy corrected, knowing it would rile the slayer up just as she planned.

"Fine, you wanna be that way? I'll say it now! You're beautiful."

"I was expecting you to make fun of my weight and maybe my looks like you and that furball love doing." Her eyebrow raised slightly. "But hearing your high praise works too."

His hands raised in front of him defensively. "Come on now, Luce! Y-You know I, or we, well maybe Happy... b-but I've never meant any of those things."

"I believe you. But what I'm beginning to not believe is this obliviousness that Fairy Tail's resident fire dragon slayer is notorious for. What do you have to hide, Natsu?"

"N-Nothing! Absolutely nothing L-Lucy."

"It's been a long time since I've seen you stutter. Did I make the little dragon embarrassed?"

"I'm more of a demon now than I ever was a dragon." He clarified rather forwardly and she realized she had hit a store spot. One that still stung massively for him.

"Maybe so..." She whispered while wrapping her arms around his neck, Natsu absently reciprocating it. "But you're still Natsu Dragneel. A mage from Fairy Tail. That part hasn't changed has it?"

"No." He stated and began to see her point. "It hasn't."

"Then you can still make things right. You may have the powers of a demon and be viewed literally as one... but you're good at heart, Natsu. No other demon is like you for that very reason. They can't be like you. Demons are all about wrongdoings and yet your mind focuses on doing the right thing. That's why Zeref won't win this war. His prized weapon won't fire. Because I won't let you."

The path has already begun.

You really are a killjoy you know that?

And you need to stop letting yourself be so down in the dumps. You have a wonderful woman at your side and yet you're constantly trying to push her away.

You told me I needed to leave her in order for her to be safe. Now I don't know what to think because I don't want to leave her.

Well, good news. Now that your friend in the crystal is free... there is no more place that is safe.

What?

I figured it out while you and Lucy were traveling back to your place. That girl-

Her name is Mavis.

Yes, Mavis. She is the piece of the puzzle that Zeref needed.

"Something wrong, Natsu?" She asked after seeing his eyes dilate.

"Nope." He answered quickly and blocked out his demon's thoughts. "You know... this is nice. Just me, and you, and not having to worry our impending doom." He still heard a distinct chuckle in the back of his brain. "I really enjoy this side of you."

"Thank you Natsu. That means a lot coming for you." She said genuinely and he could tell that even through all the awkwardness and confusion, his friend was happy. That made everything worth it in his eyes.

Of course, since this is Natsu, the romantic situation didn't last very long.

"But do you think you could get off me? You're kinda heavy, Luce." He mistakenly trusted her affection thinking that it wouldn't bring him pain. A loud smack reverberated throughout the cottage and was followed by a whimper. His cheek would be feeling that slap for hours.

"You sure know how to ruin the moment, Natsu..." She sighed and climbed up off him. He immediately sensed her disappointment and grumbled under his breath as she left the memorabilia room. He had severely just blown it.

I can't believe we're about to throw down with our creator and I have to do it with such an insufferable idiot as the bait.

Who you calling bait, demon eyes?!

You, moron! I like the new nickname by the way, but I hope you know you sure aren't getting any of Lucy for the time being after that botched move.

What does that even mean?! You know what, forget it. Just go away.

Gladly. Perhaps she could use some company from-

GO AWAY!

A/N: So, as I got further through this chapter I realized that a lot of separate scenes took place and we have some very important events coming up. With that being said, I have decided to follow through with my original plan and split this opening entry into the Alvarez arc in half. I promise what's coming is going to be worth the wait. With a break coming up soon, I will have plenty of time to write too so expect the next upload to be within the next two weeks. Thank you all for your patience and continued support! See you in the next one! :)
