Emmett
2 more days had passed and I still felt so broken for my sweet Rosie. I still couldn't comprehend the situation we'd been in just a week ago. It just didn't feel real.
I had thought everything was going well. I had thought that Rosalie was better, but I couldn't have been more wrong.
She had died and if it wasn't for Carlisle and Esme, she'd have been dead. Thank God Alice had been able to see the seizure. If only she could see the future now so I knew that Rosalie was going to be okay.
I was torn between wanting her to live a healthy human life or just changing her into a vampire. As a vampire, she wouldn't need to worry about her weight or trying to be perfect. Her eyesight would come back and she would be able to walk and talk okay. She would be healed. But it wasn't as easy as that. I had to respect that Rosalie may not want to be a vampire. I didn't want to take her human life away from her if she wasn't 100% certain about what she wanted and at the moment, I had no idea what Rosalie wanted.
I watched her intently from my perch on the couch. Alice had her arm wrapped around Rosalie's waist as she walked from the stairs into the living room. "Just a little more to the left," She was saying. "There's a flowerpot there on a table."
Rosalie nodded, following Alice's direction. Eventually, she found her way to the couch I was sitting on and I reached to take her from Alice's grip.
She sat down next to me, feeling for my hand so that she could hold it. "Did you enjoy your bath?" I asked her.
Rosalie smiled softly, reaching out in front of her to try and find Alice. Alice moved closer to her and took her other hand. "Alice…is…good at…helping."
Alice sunk down on the seat next to Rosalie with a huge grin on her face. "I try my best!" She shrugged.
We were trying Rosalie without any oxygen today and she was doing okay so far. Her lungs and heart sounded stronger than they had been just a few days earlier. Carlisle was still sticking to feeds through the nasogastric tube during the nights but Rosalie had asked if she could try a bit of food and drink herself today.
When Esme called from the kitchen to say that she had made food, I got up to support Rosalie with Alice.
Alice guided Rosalie whilst I told her what objects to avoid and where to walk. It was hard to imagine that Rosalie couldn't see anything and I knew it would be scary. Thankfully, Rosalie knew the layout of the house pretty well considering how much she'd seen it before her vision went. Hopefully it would only be a little bit longer until her vision would come back.
I pulled back a chair at the dining table so that Alice could support Rosalie to sit down before I took a seat next to her. Everyone had decided to come into the kitchen but I wasn't sure if Rosalie was aware of this, or whether she would want to be.
Edward and Jasper hung back in the doorway and Carlisle took a seat with Alice at the table opposite Rosalie and me.
Esme brought over a plate with a piece of toast and a bowl of yogurt. She handed me Rosalie's water bottle and then moved to lean against the island.
I slowly took Rosalie's hand to not scare her and moved it towards the plate. "You've got a piece of toast, plain, and some vanilla yogurt. I've got your water bottle if you want a drink." I told her.
Rosalie's shaky fingers felt for the toast and she picked it up gradually. She took a bite of it and started to chew but tears were streaming down her face.
Alice reached to put a supportive hand on Rosalie's other hand. Rosalie flinched at the unexpected contact initially but relaxed knowing it was Alice.
Rosalie put the toast down after one bite and moved to find the spoon for the yogurt. She found it after a few seconds and shakily pulled a spoonful towards her mouth. When she was done, she struggled to find the bowl to put the spoon back. I wanted to do it for her but I knew she was capable of doing it so I waited a little more until it was accomplished. She then reached her hand toward me so I handed her the water bottle. She took just a sip before pushing it onto the table.
"I'm so proud of you," I murmured, taking her hand in mine.
She smiled but it didn't quite reach her eyes. "I can't…eat…anymore." She started chewing on her lower lip and her brows pulled together in disappointment.
"You did so good," I said as I handed the food back to Esme. I kept hold of the drink just in case Rosalie was able to take anymore sips. "You don't need to eat anymore, it's okay."
Rosalie started picking at the skin around her nails and I knew she was feeling anxious. Alice noticed this too and pulled Rosalie's chair back so she wasn't so close to the table. "Why don't we go and do something else? Do you want to have a look at my new clothes?" She suggested.
Rosalie loved mechanics and had shown an interest in the medical field but she was refusing to entertain these interests now she couldn't see. She said there wasn't any point but she did like Edward to read medical journals to her. She was also quite keen on fashion which Alice adored.
"I can't…see." Rosalie said flatly in response to Alice.
"You don't need to see!" Alice exclaimed as she stood up excitedly. "I can tell you about them and you can feel all the different materials."
Rosalie pondered on that and eventually she agreed to the suggestion.
Fashion was definitely not an interest of mine, so I opted to play video games with Edward and Jasper in Edward's room just across the hall from where Alice and Rosalie were.
I would be there in a heartbeat if she needed me.
